The Rooftop
In a rundown apartment building, in an unnamed city in Uruguay, a father and daughter close themselves off from the world. ‘The world is this house’, says Clara, and the rooftop becomes their last recess of freedom. A pet canary is their only witness.
As Clara’s connection to the outside is stripped away—the neighbor who stops coming by, the lover whose existence is only known by a pregnancy—desperation and paranoia take hold. It's a stifling embrace, and we are there with her, our narrator, dreading what we know the future holds.

Some years back, a psychiatrist once told me one of his patients reported, "The couch in my living room is out to get me."
As the psychiatrist observed, "But if the couch is out to get him, what prevents all other objects and people in his world from likewise being out to get him?"
The patient's statement leads us to ask: How deep a fissure can paranoia cut in the mind?
Turning to the novel under review, on the first page we read:"It's hard to believe I had a life before this one, a job, a flat, which I now remember nothing about."
The above reflection comes from Clara, the tale's narrator. The Rooftop by Uruguayan author Fernanda Trías counts as the author's first novel available in English. A special call-out to Charco Press and Annie McDermott for her smooth, accessible translation.
I can well believe Clara finds it impossible to remember a life outside the one she's living now since she's confined to her ramshackle apartment with her ailing father, trapped by fear, anxiety - and paranoia.
One reading of The Rooftop: a tale of a young woman's madness, a life of psychic suffocation where her only escape are those brief moments she can sit out on a rooftop. In keeping with the opaqueness of the story, at this point I'll shift to linking my further observations to a batch of direct quotes -
“I have to convince myself that what's in the other room isn't a man, isn't Dad. Tucked up together it was like they were sleeping.”
Clara sleeps in one room, her Dad in another with a canary in its cage next to his bed. Why does Clara need convincing? Does Clara take comfort in imagining others in her Dad's room? Mystery, mystery...the more I read, the more I questioned the reliability of Clara's narration.
“No one could possibly understand how I feel: isolated, expecting nothing, knowing I'm locked in a desperate battle to defend something that's already gone.”
Now that's desperation! A young lady conducting a battle for an imagined past, for a harmonious family life that probably never was.
“I unbuttoned my blouse so he could see how my breasts were growing....He looked at them, curious, but then it was as if he'd suddenly remembered something horrible and his face changed.”
We can wonder how deep Clara's madness – baring her breasts for her father! And further on we read, “I silently prayed his (her father's) hand would carry on going. Higher, just a little higher, in between my thighs.”
Nothing like sex with all the Electra/Oedipal undertones to add fuel to the fire of madness.
“Julia had been slim and athletic, and Dad used to tell her it made him proud to have a wife like that.”
Julia is Clara's now dead stepmother and they're living in Julia's apartment. Clara and her father eek out their days via Julia's savings. And what happened to Julia? Was she the victim of South American political crossfire? Is national politics or a military uprising contributing to Clara's paranoia?
“According to Carmen, it was possible to bring things about through thought alone. You had to sit somewhere comfortable, close your eyes and imagine what you wanted to achieve as if it had already happened.”
Clara does come in contact with others, primarily Carmen, an older woman from Eastern Europe in a downstairs apartment who does her shopping and also served as her midwife. Additionally, there's drama aplenty in their apartment building with Carmen yelling at the fat whore across the hall from Clara, a fat woman continually partying and blasting music (Clara watches the unfolding saga, including visits by the police, mostly through a peephole).
“'It's our baby,' I said, when I could finally get up. 'That's all that counts.'”
Midway through the tale, Clara has a baby girl, Flor. Is her Dad the father? We witness the impact Clara's paranoia has on Flor the baby growing into Flor the toddler.
“The world is a bad place. The streets are dangerous and you can't trust the people. That's where Julia went wrong. And that's why I wanted to keep Dad safe, though he never understood.”
Is Clara caring for her father or is she keeping him as an unwilling prisoner?
“The first afternoon I went up without giving it much thought, never dreaming how important the roof would become. My space, my hiding place. From up there, everyone looked so small that they no longer posed a threat.”
Claustrophobia, anyone? I can imagine a director turning Fernanda Trías's novel into a film, Alfred Hitchcock black and white veiled in shadows.

Charco Press is an Edinburgh-based small UK press – they focus on “finding outstanding contemporary Latin American literature and bringing it to new readers in the English-speaking world”.
This is the fifth book of their fifth year of publication – and the first of two new (to Charco) Uruguayan authors – here Fernanda Trias.
This book was originally published in Spanish in 2001, when the author was only 25 - -and was her debut novel.
It is translated by Annie McDermott who (among many other books) translated for Charco – Selva Almada’s “Dead Girls”, Brenda Lozano’s “Loop” and (together with Carolina Orloff – Charco’s joint founder) Ariana Harwicz’s “Feebleminded”.
The narrator Clara has spent the last four years living in the flat of her widowed Father – his wife Julia (who appears to be Clara’s stepmother and with who Clara had a more than troubled relationship having died in a car crash). Increasingly Clara’s care for him takes the form of confining him to the small flat, one which increasingly circumscribes her own life too (other than occasional escapes to the titular rooftop of the flats) as her paranoia causes her to want to shut out the threats of the world. Their companions are a pet bird and Clara’s daughter (born around two years after Clara enters the flat – the Father ambiguously indicated) – both also caged figuratively as well as literally. The only real visitor (although she is eventually seen by Clara as the leader of those conspiring against her) is a foreign midwife Carmen (as an aside her speech is set out like “Vait – you need rrrest” – I assume the English following the original – it is hard though to imagine English language literary fiction which would be written like this and I found it weakened her as a character).
The book is perhaps more of a novella and its length both fits the enclosed and claustrophobic nature of the life of the family at its centre, as well as intensifying the disturbing nature of the tale told – one that was perhaps a little too dark for me - hence my rating.

It's hard to believe I had a life before this one, a job, a flat, which I now remember nothing about. For me, real life began with Julia's death, went on for four years and came to an end today.
'Rooftop' is Annie McDermott's translation of Fernanda Trías's debut novel 'La azotea', written when she was 22-23 and published in 2001 in Uruguay and then, over the next 20 years, in other Spanish-speaking countries.
This is the 6th of McDermott's translations I have read, the previous 5 being The Luminous Novel and Empty Words from Trías's fellow Uruguyuan and her former mentor Mario Levrero, Loop by Brenda Lozano, Dead Girls by Selva Armada and, together with Carolina Orloff, Feebleminded by Ariana Harwicz.
The two Levrero novels were published by And Other Stories and the other three by Charco Press, who also published this novel their 27th. My Charco Press shelf has reviews of all of them. Charco also have two more McDermott translations in the pipeline for late 2021-early 2022: another Selva Almada novel Brickmakers, and another joint translation with Carolina Orloff of Ariana Harwicz, Tender.
The novel opens:
If they came right now they'd find me face-up on the bed, in the same position I collapsed down in around midnight. Eleven thirty-eight, to be precise: the time when I last looked at the clock and the time when everything ended. I gave Flor a kiss, told her to sleep tight, and she closed her eyes like it was just another night.
and continues:
The candle guttered out a while ago, and now the darkness is swallowing the walls. It's almost as if the whole world knew and was lying in wait just for me. I'm not sure what time it is, but the later it gets the less frightened I feel, and the less I feel of anything at all. Whatever happens, they'll have to break down the door, because I put the chain on and wedged the chest of drawers against it. Dad and Flor are in the other room and in a funny way they're keeping each other company. Not me. I don't have anyone, but I'm determined to stay awake.
I hear a siren in the distance: an ambulance or a police car, I can never tell which. As it draws closer, my heart pounds in my chest. The sound turns shrill and leaves me shellshocked as it goes by under the window. Red light flashed onto the walls for a moment, like tiny flame-figures dancing in the air. Now the siren fades as well, and I'm back in the shadowy silence of the room. Alone. I have to convince myself that what's in the other i room isn't a man, isn't Dad. Tucked up together it was like they were sleeping.
Which is then followed by the paragraph that opens my review (and which was originally going to be the opening lines to the novel).
And the commendably compact and hence intense novel (112 pages) then has the narrator, Clara, tell us of what led to this moment, and the relationship between, and ultimate fate of, herself, her father, Flor and Julia. A rather dark and at times uncomfortable read.
Looking back on the novel in 2018-9 when it was published in Spain and in 2020 on its Mexican publication, Trías reflected that the driver for most of her novels has been the characters’ fear of forces from outside.
Here the narrator’s fear manifests itself as a deep paranoid psychosis. Rooftop can be seen as a metaphor, one exaggerated to the limit, for Trías own experience of stuck between a rather sheltered adolescence and the seeming threat of adult life. And Clara father’s desire to escape the confines of the flat also reflects the author’s own feeling of being trapped in provincial Montevideo and wanting to see the wider world.
A powerful and disturbing work and another success for Charco Press.

I really enjoyed Pink Slime (a hot take, apparently) and found this to be just as exceptional. Nobody can create such a claustrophobic environment quite like Trías can — the decrepit apartment, the grime, and the increasingly paranoid narrator all do an excellent job of creating a haunting atmosphere.
It wasn't until reading other reviews that I realized how much the novel leaves unsaid. How old is Clara? What are the circumstances that brought about her pregnancy? How justified is her paranoia? We only get glimpses into her world, and the gut reaction is that we assume her paranoia is entirely unfounded, yet is it? A lot to mull over in an otherwise short book, but there's no doubt in my mind that this ending will stick with me. Another stellar read from Charco Press and I can only hope we get more of Fernanda Trías translated to English.

Another stellar read from Charco Press and I can only hope we get more of Fernanda Trías translated to English.

until the day he died my father worshipped a world that robbed him of all he ever wanted.a disconcerting, claustrophobic novel, fernanda trías' the rooftop (la azotea) works its dark magic to impressive effect. the uruguayan author (and levrero disciple) crafts masterfully a tale of increasing portent, plotted perfectly with an unraveling ratcheted up at a nearly undetectable pace.
the story of a woman, her father, and her (their?!) daughter, the rooftop takes place almost entirely within the walls of a neglected apartment. trías tantalizingly omits some key details, which, of course, only serves to deepen the disorientation and enshroud the sinister. an altogether dazzling (and disquieting) debut, the rooftop teems with symbolism and allegory, despite its relative brevity. like a constrictor slowly suffocating its prey, trías already has you well within her grasp long before you even know what's happening.
no one could possibly understand how i feel: isolated, expecting nothing, knowing i'm locked in a desperate battle to defend something that's already gone.*translated from the spanish by annie mcdermott (levrero, harwicz, almada, lozano, et al.)

Aynı ay içinde iki romanını okuduğum Trías’in yazdığı her şeyi merak eder ve okurum kesinlikle.

Asfixiante!
