Can a woman who has spent her life hiding her feelings between the pages of a notebook, gain the courage to bare them to the one she’s meant to be with?
Reign Price has always had a good head on her shoulders. At thirty-two, she’s an editing supervisor, in the process of purchasing a home, and when she’s not journaling her deepest thoughts into one of her notebooks, she’s making time for her loved ones. Reign seems to have it all together—on the outside.
That's because Reign’s ability to suppress her feelings is unmatched. Putting on a brave face while uttering the words “I’m fine” is a skill she has mastered. While her relationship of six years is on the verge of crumbling, Reign tries her best to remain stoic. However, after a devastating betrayal, she’s forced to face her emotions head on.
Through it all, she rekindles a once-close friendship with Chase Williams—her best friend’s older brother. Leaving a dead-end relationship of his own, Chase realizes that being close to Reign again is what he wants.
As old feelings resurface, and new desires reach fever pitch, Reign finds herself faced with a dilemma: be honest about how she truly feels, or risk losing the best thing that has ever happened to her.

“Right As Reign” follows Reign, a successful editor stuck in a 6 year stagnant relationship, as she works on herself, healing, and giving love another chance after a major gut punch betrayal.
If you’re a fan of friends to lovers, second chance, mixed with a whole lot of drama and messiness then check it out!
•My Thoughts•
-Would’ve loved to see more of Reign, Chase and their relationship and less of Troy and Marcy jealous and conniving asses!
- Loved both of Chase and Reign’s family
-Would’ve rated it higher if Reign didn’t get on my nerves so much she irritated me most of the book 😩
Reign has a successful career as an editor and is in a dead-end relationship. She often brushes off her emotions and conflict with a simple “I’m fine.” After the ultimate betrayal, Reign starts working to better herself, addressing her emotions, and accomplishing personal goals. When the opportunity for a second chance at love arises, will she give it a try?
Friends, fake friends, frenemies and friends to lovers…𝑅𝑒𝑖𝑔𝑛 was a dramatic ride.
I was initially intimidated by the large book size, but it was easier and quicker to get through the book than I anticipated because it was mostly dialogue driven. The juicy conversations kept things moving along quickly.
Here’s what I liked: ❥Chase and his sister Ava were my favorite characters. Chase was a man who knew what he wanted and didn’t play games. Ava had all of the traits of a good friend. ❥ Reigns profession as an editor and how she excelled in creative writing. I love editing and my daughter studies creative writing in school. ❥The family closeness and togetherness on both ends! ❥ Heated & passionate scenes!
My minor critiques: ❣︎I adored Reign as a character in the beginning until her snappy attitude turned me off as well as her running away from every situation. ❣︎I would’ve liked to see more of how Reign’s tapping into her emotions helped her pull through after facing an unexpected betrayal. ❣︎I feel too much attention was given on the “ex”tra characters and most of their scenes became repetitive.
Overall I enjoyed the story, it reminded me of some of my old Tajuana Butler books I used to read and re-read when I was younger. I’d recommend this to fans of women’s growth and healing, and friends to lovers romance.

Listen… this one right here? Whew. J.B. came out the gate swinging and had me locked in from page one.
We meet Reign Price, an editing supervisor who’s passionate about writing but too guarded to ever share her stories outside the safety of her journals. Raised to believe vulnerability was a weakness, Reign keeps her emotions buried deep—only ever really opening up to her best friend Ava… and Ava’s older brother, Chase Williams. 👀
Reign is stuck in a six-year relationship that’s clearly expired, but she’s still holding on for reasons even she can’t fully explain. And just when everything starts unraveling, betrayal knocks her completely off her feet, forcing her to retreat into her emotional shell even more.
But Chase—who’s going through his own heartbreak—steps in and becomes the comfort Reign didn’t know she needed. These two have history, and there’s always been an unspoken tension between them ever since that moment they shared back in high school. But now? With both of them single and navigating fresh wounds, maybe this is their time to finally explore what they never had the chance to back then. And that old chemistry? Yeah… it’s still very much there.
Chase is over being “just the friend.” He’s ready to step up and make it known that he sees Reign as his. But will she let go of her fear and finally allow someone to love her the way she deserves?
Now let’s talk about Ava. I loved her. A supportive friend and a loyal sister through and through—but that one scene? Whew. She overstepped so bad I had to remind myself she was the bestie and not the opp 😅. But I’ll give her grace—her heart was in the right place, and she made it right in the end, so we cool again.
And then there’s Marcy and Troy… sigh. These two had me heated. Marcy really thought life was gonna be sweet after being that nasty? One thing about the tables—they gon’ turn every time. And let me just say: they’re both living the life they deserve. Good riddance.
Another standout in this book? The family dynamics. It was so refreshing to read about characters with solid, supportive family systems. Reign and Chase had people in their corner from day one—parents who showed up, siblings who cared. That kind of representation is rare in stories like this, and it made such a difference watching them be loved out loud by their people.
Sure, Reign dragged her feet a little near the end, but her growth journey was worth every second. Watching her learn that being vulnerable with the right people is a strength and not a weakness? Chef’s kiss.
If you love slow burns, best friend’s brother, second chances, strong character development, and just enough mess to keep your jaw clenched—Right As Reign needs to be on your TBR.
Book: Right As Reign Author: J.B. Vample Genre: Contemporary Romance Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. 5 Spice: 🥵🥵
Whew there was so much going on in this book that I had to pull out the wine while I was reading this. Poor Reign was going through it. I felt so bad for her but was glad she was forced to deal with some very toxic relationships that needed to end. I saw the betrayal a mile away and found myself yelling at Reign “like girl why don’t you see this”. Chase was such a great guy, you could tell he wasn't fully committed to his ex but was all in with Reign. Chase was so caring, attentive, and romantic with Reign and I loved it. I enjoyed the growth with Reign, Chase, and even Ava.
I found myself getting frustrated with Reign and the way she suppressed her feelings but as I read her interactions with her dad I understood why she was the way she was. She definitely had the most growth and had a lot she had to work through. I enjoyed Reign and Ava' a friendship! Ava kept me laughing at her antics, but what I loved the most was her honesty with Reign! Ava genuinely cared about Reign and knew her issues with showing her feelings so she continued to try to pull those feelings out until Reign finally let her all the way in! I also liked Reign and Chase’s relationship with their families.
I was a little leery by the length of the book considering the genre but it turned out to be an easy read because it was mostly dialogue vs long descriptive paragraphs. I would have liked to of read more of Reigns journal entries but this didn't take away from the story just may of given me more insight on Reign's feelings and how her mind worked. While I enjoyed some of the followup on the secondary characters I did feel at times they were getting to much of my attention and I just wanted them to be out of the picture.
This was a good friendship and women fiction read with a slow burn romance feel. There were several funny moments, a few emotional moments, best friends keeping it real with each other, a warm and fuzzy friends to lovers romance, and lots of drama.
4/5 — I didn’t know what to expect opening this book but a time was had. There was the right amount of drama and romance. Don’t let the cover fool you. These assortment of characters had me stressed. — This was my first read by this author but I’ll definitely be checking out her catalog. I absolutely loved Reign and Chase. — I love a second chance romance, even when it takes a lot of push and pull to get there. If that’s your jam, you’ll enjoy this one!
If you like a friends to lovers book I would recommend this one. It has just the right amount of romance & drama. Very little spice though :/ I’m only giving this 4 stars because it’s almost 500 pages long and I feel like it dragged on just a little.
This was a good read but it DRAGGED! all of this could have been wrapped up in way less chapters. I found myself so frustrated with Reign. While I understand it’s difficult for her to express herself, it annoyed me so bad. Especially when it came to Chase & just saying what it is.
I have so many things to say about this book. But what I want to focus on is how well this book was written. I know many people do not like slow burns because they feel that the story drags. A well written slow burn will have excellent character development and will not leave you feeling like things were missed. That is what I felt about this story. I thought that the author did a very good job with the pacing of this story. She didn't spend too much time on one character over the other. She was able to balance the POVs and give you just enough to keep you engaged. I loved how she was able to keep me engrossed in every person's life without doing too much. This story was complete for me. I was not left wondering about any of the characters because this was a completed story for me.
I loved how Reign was an editor. Her art imitated her life as she loved to write and her profession was a direct reflection of that. The story started with her writing in her journals and it ended with her in her journal. I loved that consistency throughout the story. Reign will stress you out. She was not good with displaying or sharing her emotions, and in the beginning this got on my nerves, but I was introduced to her daddy. Then I understood why she was the way that she was. I related to her character so much as I was this way. I kept journals for everything and that is how I used to express myself. So with this, the author definitely did well with this personality trait.
Chase was a good man!! This man was so patient and loving. What I loved most about him is that he was not a weak man. He loved hard and he loved those close to him but he didn't come off as a pushover or timid. He meant what he said and he was no dummy. He knew what he wanted and he was not going to settle on just anything. He was a great example of when you know what you want, that you dont settle until you get what you want. He is a protector and I loved how he protected Reign in all areas. The vulnerability that he showed towards Reign was beautiful. He was a great listener and there was nothing that he wouldn't do for Reign. He will give her the world and he showed her that.
Marcy had the most audacity ever in this book. I just laughed at how she carried herself. The sad part is that there are people who are really this way. She is a prime example of being spoiled and then got a rude awakening. She got all of what she deserved. I understood why she was the way she was, but I definitely didn't feel sorry for her. People like her think they are winning but in reality, they are not. She is trash. Period!
Troy was trash. What more can I say about him? Nothing. Just trash. Hated him and hated that she spent so much time on this joker.
Ava was my girl. She is the friend and sister that we all need. She was hilarious and was a pit bull for her loved ones and I was here for it.
It has been a while since I have been this excited and captivated with a story and its writing. If you love a second chance romance slow burn that has great character development, that is written well, and want the heart palpitations because of how this man loved this woman- I recommend this for you. This is definitely one of my top 10 books of this year (2024).
I really enjoyed this book. The character growth and the self healing journey was an absolute blast to read. I adore Reign and her personality was funny and if she was real I would love her to be my friend. Chase is everything that a man should be in the real world. The way that he cares about others and does everything in his power to make sure that they’re happy is so beautiful. I loved the friendship between them. I recommend this book.
This was a bookclub read and man did we have a time. Read it before the scheduled dates outlined. It looks like a cupcake… stressed us out! A must read. I love Chase and Reign’s story! Second chance, after chance lol romance. I will be reading more from J. B. Vample after this! She has been on my TBR for a year and I am now pushing her catalog up.
The character emotion or sometimes lack there of in this story was so compelling and real. The author did a great job telling the story and pulling the reader in from beginning to end. I can see other stories developing for other characters.
This story really pulled at my heart strings down to the way the story was written. I loved every moment. I related so much to Reign that I couldn’t help but cry when she cried. And the male vulnerability?!!! OMG *chefs kiss*. Definitely in my top 5 favorites.
Perfect escape. It's grounded in reality. However, for these few hundred pages you get to witness humour, pain, growth, and unconditional happiness. Highly recommend.
This book was amazing because every character got developed. And this is the first woman fiction and romance book I read this year. It broke me because of how well every character was realistic.
The main character Reign confronts and gets over a lot of her barriers in her own way. The way she does it is so normal and with normal methods. Right as Reign is the first book example in 2022 of why I love real life storytelling and everythimg encompassed in the romance genre.
I loved this book. The character development, storyline, and narration were great. Each of the characters were realistic and this author does a great job pulling you in and not letting you go. This book addresses: - Betrayal - Friendships - Friends to lovers The main character Reign definitely frustrated me at times because of her inability to express and acknowledge here feelings. The amount of time it took her to just be able to connect with herself and her needs was exhausting. I loved the characters of Chase and his sister Ava. Their level of loyalty and friendship was amazing. This book was messy in the beginning and I thought the betrayal was predictable but overall this was an excellent read. I would give this book a 4.5 star rating.
This book had me emotional from cover to cover. I love reading books where there is a strong black woman. However, I won’t lie— I did get a little frustrated with her from time to time in the book but I had to remind myself how accurate it is to real life. A lot of us don’t see how we can have something good for us right in front of us and overlook it or overthink it.
I was so sick of Troy and Marcy! Cheating is a strong no for me, but outside of that they were just terrible people. It’s sad what Chase and Reign had to go through. I love that they came out on the other end stronger and together.
Overall, I can say I love the book and I love how much this author has grown over the years. From the first books I’ve read from her the college life series, to this one you can see the growth and the switch from one trope to another was smooth and wonderfully done.
