The Inquiry quickly becomes the greatest challenge of her life – solving the mystery of Genesis. Facing danger at every turn, can Ella find the answers to the riddles and clues left by the missing genius? Reunited with her estranged daughter, the Inquiry sends them on a quest across the world and through ancient texts. What is the secret that binds us all? Who is behind the dark forces that will stop at nothing to prevent the world from knowing the truth? The Genesis Inquiry is an epic and gripping thriller by the brilliant Olly Jarvis which asks a key question – what can our shared past tell us about humanity’s future?
*I voluntarily reviewed this book from publicity team.
If I had to describe THE GENESIS INQUIRY by Olly Jarvis in one word, it would have to be addictive - addictive characters, addictive plot, addictive setting!
When polymath, Matthew, goes missing from Cambridge University, the college appoints barrister Ella Blake to investigate what happened. Matthew was working on something that could change the world and answer all of its mysteries but then he simply vanished into thin air.
While Ella has certainly struggled and become something of a recluse after going through a tough time in her life, she is determined to do everything she can to find Matthew, not just for the thrill of solving the puzzle but for Matthew's brother too. But what Matthew was working on was dangerous and others are searching for his research, and they will do whatever it takes to get their hands on it, even murder.
As Ella races across the world, with the help of her daughter and some unlikely friends, can she uncover what happened to Matthew before it is too late?
A compelling plotline with a cast of characters that kept me hooked from beginning to end, THE GENESIS INQUIRY by Olly Jarvis is part legal drama, part crime/suspense novel and I loved it! Ella is such a talented and intelligent character and isn't positioned as a perfect paragon, but a flawed and emotional individual which makes her even more likeable. I loved the mystery element of this story and while it is expertly detailed and alluring, it never steps over that line of too complicated or too detailed that it would be off-putting. It is the kind of book that makes you want more and it would be perfect for the screen in some shape or form.
THE GENESIS INQUIRY by Olly Jarvis is an excellent novel and is a must-read for suspense/legal drama/mystery/crime fiction readers everywhere.
Having not read any of this author’s books before, I was thrilled to be offered this one as an ARC.
I have to say, it was a most enjoyable and enlightening novel, and I felt I’d learned a lot from it. I knew bits and pieces about Genesis but nowhere near the amount of knowledge Olly has about it.
The book starts of with Ella Blake, a QC with outstanding qualifications, who of recent times has let her work lapse, when she’s offered a case looking into a missing polymath. What transpires is a race around various continents with her daughter and other assistants to find out the truth before it’s too late. My heart was in my mouth a few times, with the tricky situations they found themselves, and of course they, themselves were being pursued, but by whom? Who could they trust?
I found myself, having to read “just one more chapter” before I could go to sleep!
I don’t know if Olly would do another one, but I felt these characters, even with their flaws could go on, as they were likeable and interesting.
My thanks to the author, Olly and Hobeck books for the ARC.

“What a treat it is to read Olly Jarvis’s THE GENESIS INQUIRY: a compulsively readable crime and legal thriller that pulls off the trick of being both satisfyingly traditional and supremely up to the minute. In the attractive, cussed and charismatic person of lawyer Ella Blake Jarvis has created a hero that we can hope to see again. A real winner.”- Stephen Fry
Wow! A book to quickly become absorbed in and take you along for the ride. Ella Blake ran away from her life when she lost a case three years ago. She has been living in a campervan up and around Lindisfarne away from it all. Her daughter Lizzie is at Cambridge and has had little contact with her. Ella is a QC and good at what she does, or at least did. An old friend contacts her about finding a missing person, not just anyone, a polymath from Cambridge and Ella sees this as not only a chance to rejoin the human race but also to reach out to her estranged daughter. The case quickly becomes dangerous and Ella has to use all her resources to keep both her and Lizzie safe. I couldn’t help but think of The Da Vinci Code- however this is a more up to date version and much better in my humble opinion. I would love to see this as a drama or film. I quickly became engrossed in this and there is a skill and technicality of writing around an early legal issue which showcased Olly’s background as a barrister. I rapidly took to Ella- a troubled woman but very much with two feet on the ground and a tenacity to seek the truth. A book to very much keep the grey matter active ( just how I like it!) and one for anyone enjoying a mystery, law and history combined with a smattering of other subjects in the mix from astronomy to Socrates, Plato and more. Stunning, thrilling and a whole lot more. For more reviews please see my blog http://nickibookblog.blogspot.co.uk/ or follow me on Twitter@nickisbookblog
Douglas Adams wrote “The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42”. Is 42 the secret answer that binds us all or is there something more to it than a simple joke taken from a 70/80s cult classic sci-fi series?
Polymath Matthew Shepherd was looking into something big, something that connects us all but he didn’t share his research (equals intrigue) and then vanished into thin air (double that intrigue). Not a word to anyone, not his tutors, the university staff, not his brother. And the brother making a fuss. He wants to know where his sibling is. So the university appoint barrister Ella Blake to complete an inquiry. Will she find out what happened to Matthew?
I took to Ella straight away. Yes she’s made herself a recluse after a rough patch, hiding away from the world in a camper van. But she got her teeth and mind into the inquiry and she came into her own and shone. Her analytical brain and ability to absorb and retain information was amazing. I would love to see her at the helm of a court trial!
The cast of characters was brilliant, the cohort Ella assembled played their parts impeccably and the rest of the characters I questioned whether to trust – but that’s what you do right?! The friction between Ella and her daughter followed by the journey they went on was fraught. I really wanted them to patch up their differences as they went looking for Matthew.
The Genesis Inquiry is a seriously addictive read. I really didn’t want to put it down but real life ripped the book from my hands. It’s a legal-cum-crime thriller with a twist. Jarvis has written a brilliant read with a lawyer at the helm but nowhere near the court room. This makes his books stand out from other legal thrillers; he gives them that twist. I hope there is more to come from Ella Blake and her cohort!!
I do love a good thriller and this is very enjoyable, intelligent and satisfyingly epic! Its main characters are also well-developed and interesting, especially QC Ella Blake. I didn't get the significance of it all at the end, hence 4 not 5 stars, but I did enjoy the read. Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights.
I found this to be a bit of blockbuster read, although Ella is a QC this is not legal thriller in the normal sense as the action does not take place in the courtroom, more a high concept thriller
In someways a deeply layered thriller, but one I quickly became absorbed in and found difficult to put down, has a little bit of everything. What on paper starts out as innocent inquiry into finding a missing person quickly escalates into a dangerous race against time.
As our main protagonist it is quite easy to relate to Ella as a person, clearly troubled by events in her past and estranged from her daughter, yet you can somehow relate and believe in her, as for the other characters in the book, your’e never quite sure they are who they say they are or which side they are on, even when you have convinced yourself you know them, there’s still that nagging doubt, this is where the author has excelled with the way story is written to keep the reader guessing as to what will happen next. The author has crafted characters to show their human side, packed with emotion
The book packs many a punch and has plenty of twists and turns and moments of pure suspense and drama, as the pages roll by the tension is only heightened
The pace of the book is frenetic and the story moves quickly between locations as time is most definitely not on Ellas side. The plotting is intricate with a keen eye for detail, with the story wonderfully woven together, thanks to the writing though you don’t lose any of strands within, nor does it become bogged down, like a great river it just flows
Theories abound and clues are unravelled, what is Genesis? Should the truth be uncovered?
It is one of those you reads where you tell yourself just one more chapter but have to keep going
Will keep you on the edge of your seat from the opening pages until the dramatic and nail biting finale, packed with all the ingredients that make for a great thriller. Highly recommend
‘“This is the story of how we lost our way.” She waved an arm at the screen. “This is the story of Genesis”.’ Connect the dots to answer the questions. One, where is Matthew Shepherd? Two, why did he leave? Three, what was he working on when he disappeared?
A genius polymath Matthew Shepherd, his secrets well guarded, vanishes without a trace whilst at University in Cambridge. His brother in Arizona is suddenly killed, removing the last person Shepherd spoke to from the equation. Is this investigation more than just a missing person case? Why is Shepherd’s work so sought after? What dangerous territory was he searching in before it all went wrong?
To answer these questions, they need someone who knows about history, law, research, and is able to investigate this complex case to solve the mystery - Ella Blake, a strong and intelligent ex-barrister - with a team of unlikely companions, are on a fast-paced journey filled with cryptic clues, hidden histories, and barrage of bad people who want to get to Shepherds secret before they do.
‘“What the hell must people have thought, looking up at this thousands of years ago?” “That the sky held all the secrets?”...They stood in silence, marvelling at the stars.’
Will the pieces fall into place before the knowledge gets into the wrong hands? Is the key to the secret in the stars, mythology, historical dates or simply in a foxes tail? Events that changed the course of history: the first Viking invasion in 793, Adolf Hitler’s birthday in 1888, the Napoleonic Wars in 1812, Attila’s first great defeat in 451… what do the dates have in common? Is everything predetermined?
Will Ella Blake crack the code before it is too late? Can humanity handle this new truth?
This is a fast-paced thriller which I enjoyed reading. It had an unputdownable quality towards the end. Ella is a barrister and historian, employed to find a missing polymath. She has a daughter at Cambridge University where the early action takes place. The book also deals with the restoring of their severed relationship and other aspects of Ella's personal life. The search takes, Ella, her daughter and a few others on a hunt for clues which eventually lead to a site in Turkey - the location for the book's dramatic conclusion. As marketers say, this novel would be 'perfect for fans of' Dan Brown and films like the Indiana Jones series or National Treasure.
When a genius researcher disappears suddenly from a Cambridge college, the college calls in an ex-barrister to lead the internal enquiry into where he’s gone. Employing the adage: write what you know, the author makes good use of his day job as a barrister to create an authentic lead character. The story is a mystery that becomes a thriller as it hurtles towards a climax. Although quite different from my usual reading choices, I enjoyed working my way through a puzzle that took in astronomy, religion and ancient scholars. I liked the way the author spent time introducing each character before forming them into a motley gang of sleuths. Will we see them again, I wonder? They are certainly a likeable bunch, worthy of a code-cracking series.
This really was awful! It was well-written, and compelling reading, but the 'mystery' was just absolutely ridiculous. Everything was just so over the top; everybody you met happened to be linked with the mystery - there were no incidental characters - and it read more like a really bad action movie than a book. It was laughably bad at points 'We're for Cambridge, we're for knowledge', with absolutely no character development either.
Ella Blake is a QC who has left her legal career behind, but a brief that she can't turn down leads us on a roller-coaster switchback story delving deep into a many-faceted mystery. This is Olly Jarvis' best book yet and is a true page-turner.
Good easy read. I read in a week which is very fast for me. I enjoyed the plot which is very much out of the Dan Brown genre, with added student input and story lines. I will definitely be trying some more of the Ella Blake Q.C. stories, for relaxing easy to read page turners.
I think I liked the build-up more than I liked the denouement. The book is well written, but about three-quarters of the way through it goes off the rails. So I think it's well written, but the ending ruins the build-up.
I really got behind the characters - a clever, exciting and believable plot that resonates with what is happening in the world and perhaps what history can teach us.
I really liked the idea behind this book it has good pace and also a lot of really great connected ideas. i didn't like the main character just couldn't warm to her, that might just be me but that's the only reason I removed a star.
Interesting well written and definitely a page turner . Great cast of characters , a very enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more by this author .
The Genesis Inquiry is a little different from Olly Jarvis’ previous books. The Author still uses his own experience of legal knowledge but in an alternative and very interesting way than his previous books. The Genesis Inquiry is a book that entertained and taught me a lot of factual information. It is obvious that a lot of research has gone into this book.
The main character Ella Blake is a barrister who was well known in her area but has been on an extended break for a while. Ella is offered a job which seems a lot simpler in the beginning than how it actually turns out to be. Ella does know that it will bring her closer in distance to her daughter and that has to be a good thing. As the pages turn, we follow Ella, her daughter and a few other interesting characters as they search for a missing polymath from Cambridge and try to find out what was so important about his work before other not so savoury people find it. The book leads us across many locations as Ella cracks the clues she finds along the way.
Legal thrillers are my favourite kind of book. But this one is a little different as the legal work does not happen in court. Ella uses her legal knowledge to try to solve the mystery of a missing man and what he was working on at the time. The Genesis Inquiry made me consider many worldly issues and made me think about both history and the future of the planet and humanity. It’s a book that I got totally engrossed in as I wanted to really understand the theories that the missing polymath was studying and the clues that led Ella to find out what it was. I would say it’s a book that needed concentration and is not a light read. But it is highly entertaining, clever and extremely well written. I love Jarvis’ writing style and he is absolutely my go to author that I wouldn’t need to read the blurb on any of his books before I bought one. I know i will enjoy whatever he writes.
There is an eclectic bunch of characters in the story. My favourite was a young computer hacker called Jay. Young, a little down on his luck but full of optimism and compassion, he and Ella help each other along the way. Like Ella did, I also grew to have a soft spot for this young man.
The Genesis Inquiry is packed with intrigue, mystery, thrills, intensity and spectacular knowledge. I’m already wondering if Jarvis will write a sequel? I for sure would love to see Ella Blake again.

Reminiscent of the Da Vinci Code, the story is complex, filled with many ‘guest’ but significant characters and a never ending journey. Exciting, plausible and I only wish I had the time to investigate what I think is extensive research. Thoroughly enjoyable.
