“Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open” by Joey Kidney is a beautifully raw and heartfelt collection of thoughts, emotions, and poetry that feels like a conversation with a close friend. Joey’s words are honest, vulnerable, and deeply relatable, making this book a comforting companion for anyone navigating love, loss, self-doubt, and growth.

One of my favorite pieces from the book perfectly encapsulates its essence:

“You’re not special, not in a sense that you don’t belong or that you are worthless. But because you believed me when you read this.”

This line, like so many others, holds a quiet power—it reassures, validates, and makes you feel seen. Joey has a way of putting into words the thoughts we often struggle to express, and that’s what makes this book so special.

Whether you need a little encouragement, a moment of reflection, or just something to remind you that you’re not alone, this book is a must-read.

I didn’t connect with a few of these as much as I did with “What’s The Rush?” but omg Joey, this was so so good! I loved it and please the drawings were beautiful, like the ones with clouds and flowers on the heads?! Precious.
I need to ponder my favorites but well done Mr. Kidney. You’ve done it again♥️

Very short and easy read. Was a short poem book. I really enjoyed it and had a lot of powerful messages. Won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I really enjoyed it and on tough days in the future will definitely go back and reread some of the poems.

Dreamy but grounded, a very short read that felt like a warm hug on a cold busy day in Germany

Review for dreaming with my eyes wide open

4 stars

“My Version of Love” is my favorite piece in this poetry collection because it shows how everyone’s meaning of love is different. This poetry collection was quite good. It is about love, self and otherwise, moving on to become a better version of yourself. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The cover art is also really beautiful. “Always Sad” is my second favorite piece from this collection. I have reached the title poem and it is good but not as good as the others. This a 4 star book because it’s good but I feels like other poetry books and that’s not fair to the author but it’s my opinion it’s not super, super different and there’s a few quotes that stick with you but other than that yeah it’s just four stars. So it’s not the best of the best but it’s also not the worst thing I ever read either. This is on the other hand is one of my most beautiful books on my shelf so for that it keeps it’s fourth and final star.

Here are some of my favorite passages

“Love is everything you ever dreamed of But the complete opposite of it.”

“Because love is different for each of us it comes and it goes so easily But the pieces that remain Are the ones that make you feel fulfilled.”

Just like I always say beauty is in the eye of the beholder so are looks. “Looks are subjective so know how you feel before asking how you look.”

“We love from being unloved.

“You can’t force love, you can only force the feeling of being wanted.”

“Because excitement never rests easy.”

Have you ever read a collection of poems where words you come across have the power to change your perception towards the situations and events of your life? Joey Kidney's "Dreaming with my eyes" is a captivating, resonating and deeply thoughtful poetry that will ingrained itself on your mind.

Through Joey's poignant poems, readers embark on a profound journey of self-discovery and empathy. The collection serves as a reminder that amidst life's trials, there is solace in shared experiences and the power of words. Each poem serves as a beacon of hope, resonating with readers who may be facing similar battles, reassuring them that they are not alone in their journey. Joey's introspective exploration of his mind and his navigation through the complexities of mental health offer solace and understanding to those grappling with their own inner turmoil.

It's absolutely commendable because as an author, Joey has conveyed words that are not only positively encouraging but also have a sense of comfort and companionship which a person always wishes to have. A perfect "2AM book" where thousand thoughts and unspoken words breach in. This one will stay with me forever.

I'm looking forward to reading more books from Joey Kidney as his writing style has impressed me beyond my expectations.
