‘In the void between time the devils waited … patiently … to be summoned again … to pass judgement on the Earth …’KATE LETHBRIDGE-STEWART is summoned by an old friend, Douglas Cavendish, to help him with a problem he has with ghosts and voices in his head. This has got to be one of the most obscure books connected to the Doctor Who brand I've ever read-a novelisation of a fan film, which both expands on the original source with new content and further connects it to the 1971 Doctor Who adventure The Daemons, on which the original fan film was based.
It's far better than it has any right to be. I can't imagine a book like this has much of an audience, but it deserves to be read. Please don't let the connections to the amateur fan film put you off, it's an original and interesting idea, albeit one I feel is carried much better on the page than it would have on the screen. It also put me back in love with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, a TV character I was initially fond of until spin-off audios put me off for a while.
I recognise it's probably hard to find a book this obscure, but if you come across a copy pick one up, it's a good read and you'll be helping a small publisher.
To declare an interest, I've recently had a novel published by Telos Publishing, so I wanted to see what David Howe's writing style was like (since he now publishes me). Hence settling down to read Daemos Rising. I'd already watched the DVD of the story, a year or two ago, which I had found to be very atmospheric. What the novelisation does, I'm pleased to say, is keep the wonderful eerie feel of the DVD but expand the story and characters around it. It filled in some of the gaps that couldn't be covered in the DVD and rounds out the plot in a lot more detail. An enjoyable read (and if you're wondering what I'd have done if I didn't like it? I would simply have not written a review). A very atmospheric read with the feel of the 3rd Doctor era.
