Captured by the Monsters

Our leaders said it’s an honor to be chosen to go to The Below.

I said f*ck that.

So close…I was so f*cking close to aging out of the selection process to be offered up to the monsters from The Below.

We never knew when we could be taken. It wasn’t some annual date we could mark on a calendar and avoid like a plague. We were at the complete whims of the monsters and their demands—demands that have increased over the past few years.

Rumors say the monsters ate all of their sacrifices, that their appetites weren’t easily appeased anymore, but I wasn’t convinced that was all.

What I did know for sure was that anyone selected was never seen again.

Two days before my twenty-fifth birthday, my name was drawn—only forty-eight short hours from becoming exempt.

How could life be so cruel?

I refused to accept this fate. I’d run. I’d fight. I’d do everything but give in.

Yet, The Below is a hostile, foreign terrain hellbent on killing all humans. Our bodies aren’t designed to survive there.

My only chance of living long enough to escape—give in to the monster's desires. Only they could give me what I needed. In return, they’d use me for their own needs.

Needs that I shouldn’t want, but found myself craving.

When they claimed I was their salvation, I started to second guess myself. They revered me like their queen with soft touches and a protectiveness that made my knees weak…

I wondered if I wanted to leave anymore.

Was this why no one ever returned to The Above?

Captured by the Monsters kind of disappointed me. Mostly because this was on my radar for a while. My heart hurt a little every time the publication got pushed back. It kind of felt like the book and I were doomed from the start. Still, I kept hope within me alive because I really wanted to dive into this book.

Unfortunately, things just feel flat. In the beginning, we sort of get mysterious selection vibe and then we are thrown into the world of mysterious monsters. Are they or aren't they being sacrificed? Will something else be happening? Well, of course something else was going to happen people. The monsters somehow find love at first sight with our main character.

Then things dip into the dark and weird. If I was ever told I had to live off of someone's something and never be able to eat anything ever again. Well. I would sacrifice myself right then and there. Could just be me though but I can't give up burgers and wine for that.

Other than that, you definitely get your fair share of romance. Mostly because that's all you really ever get. Yeah, there's some drama thrown in there but not a whole lot happens. It's basically an orgy for your eyes the entire time. Which, I'm not really complaining since I love the smut. I just wanted a story to go along with it.

In the end, it was an okay book. I was definitely expecting something different and darker than what I got.

An ok monster read if you are looking for cinnamon roll monsters instead of alphahole

Rating: 2.5 stars
Steam: 2.5 flames
Genre: PNR / MFM (sadly no swords cross) / Monster / Virgin heroine
*****
This is probably a case of it's me not you... but this book was too sweet and I personally didn’t find it all that steamy and there was a lot of sex…it just was missing some oomph.

These monsters are more cinnamon roll than alphahole. For pete's sake there was a virgin sacrifice... I expected some evil alpha monsters in need of virgins...but sadly...they weren't evil they were sweet. Even their cum was sweet.. not lying, I could make s’mores with their cum. Everything was SWEET! I prefer my monsters to be feral and dark.

As far as characters go, I read the book 3 days ago and I cannot remember any of their names, they just weren't memorable.

Sadly, this book just didn't connect with me and my expectations. I think I need to stick to really dark and dirty monsters....

This wasn’t exactly the monster romance I was expecting at all. I’ve enjoyed books by MJ before but I’ve also struggled with at least one because of how overwhelmingly explicit everything was. I kinda feel like this book falls along those lines and should come with a 💦Fluid Friendly Warning.💦 The book started very well and I was sucked in by an interesting plot and likable heroine. Slowly it evolved into a sex fest with the heroine and her shadow beings. Fine, no big deal but so much of the book revolves around her literally needing them to survive in their below world, that much of the interesting and possible plot scenarios are left unexplored. Even the monsters’ world and society underground gets minimal attention, it’s like a missed opportunity. The ‘monsters’ are really just one society I believe of beings who are incorporeal (for the most part) until mating and bonding with their mate. It was not like a hell scenario with many different beings like I imagined, which again was not bad but felt a little lackluster. They’re also not the stereotypical drooling snarling horrifying monster, in fact I think the heroines Maine Coon cat Gizmo may be scarier. I didn’t find this to be a bad read, but there could have and should have been a lot more plot, at least for me 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Sera finds herself drawing the short straw when her name is drawn as a sacrifice to be sent to the below naturally she’s devastated. A pact between above and below means every female between the ages of Eighteen and Twenty-five is entered into a lottery and non-compliance means a dire fate for the family of the tributes. Sera is a couple of days off from her birthday and freedom beckons when her name is picked no one before her has ever returned but she’s determined to be the first.

This one was ok I loved the initial idea but I mistakenly thought it was going to be much darker than what it was. I also couldn’t understand how complacent Sera was regarding all the other sacrifice's apparent fate she did have an initial wobble then later seemed to give it nary a thought other than the tragedy of lives lost mostly because she was so sexed up by her new monsters. She’s also very blasé and reasonable about everything that happens it’s like she has a little freak out when something bad occurs then moves on i found it a bit strange if I’m honest.

Her three new mates were very sweet instantly devoted to her and incredibly eager to please. I wanted some devious deviant monstrous behaviour and unfortunately, this didn’t deliver that and considering Sera is a virgin and lacks experience her behaviour just didn’t feel very authentic at all.

I was also confused at Sera’s outrage at finding out that she was expected to carry a child claiming it was kept from her it’s literally one of the first things she was told when she awoke in the cave that they needed mates to carry their offspring so I’ve no idea why she’s bemoaning that she wasn’t informed as she was. She is also seriously naive when it comes to dealing with the above I mean she lived there she knows what the leaders are like but she still thinks they can be swayed this is despite all evidence to the contrary.

Also, this was fairly predictable and the plot took a backseat to the sex. I like a bit of smut with my romance but this (and I never thought I’d say this) had too much it got fairly monotonous fast and I started to skim a lot. It was mainly erotica which is fine but I picked this up mostly for the intriguing plot description.

I was also seriously bothered about the tribute's fate if they didn’t match and didn’t understand why it wasn’t touched on more I felt the characters involved were a bit one-dimensional and stereotypical and also illogical and Sera’s mates didn’t feel that distinct to me either they kind of blurred into one and I’m not even sure what they looked like visually as it was just all so vague.

It did have imaginative ideas and the story idea was unique and the writing was ok. But the world building seriously lacked so many missed opportunities it all felt stripped back and nothing was explored on any deeper level. Overall this had all the bones for a fantastic story but it also just felt way too easy as well.

This definitely isn’t an angsty one things fall into place with little difficulty and despite some dark events alluded to it also wasn’t in any way a dark read. I’d describe this as monster erotica with a sliver of plot added which unfortunately just didn’t do it for me. It’s a shame because this did start out so strong.

*STRONG HEROINES DON’T SPEND 95% OF THE BOOK WHINING*

My god the heroine is a dumbass. It would be such a great book if the heroines personality was actually developed. And by developed, I mean completely changed. She has the mind of a child - it makes reading the sex scenes incredibly uncomfortable. She’s immature, selfish, and honestly quite stupid yet she’s meant to be some strong heroine? 🤦‍♀️ I expected better and was left completely disappointed. The only reasons this has three stars instead of zero are the heroes and interesting premise.

DNF 32% I just couldn’t. They got to the whole “you have to survive off of our marshmallow tasting cum to live down here because you can’t eat our food” and I couldn’t anymore. Like I’m into weird kinky shit (obviously, I’m purposely reading monster smut), but this was just over the top and kind of jumbled. I might have been curious about this apocalyptic world (cause I love apocalypses), but the female character was also soooo dumb, I can’t bring myself to satisfy my curiosity.

When I was offered an arc for this book I think I changed my answer at least three times. I first thought this wasn't gonna be for me. Then I started doubting because so far I liked Caulder's books a lot. Then I wasn't too sure again because Marstens and I aren't always a good mix. And then I eventually decided to give it a go and to see what it would get me. After all, if I discover the book isn't for me I can always simply not finish it, right?

Although I was quite right that this book is different from the books I usually prefer, I'm one of those rare people reading reverse harem, but not reading it for the smut, I actually enjoyed this book quite a lot and certainly a lot more than I feared! And that's mostly because the writing of this book is amazingly well done. I was sucked into the story and I just couldn't stop reading. The story was addictive, the story was fun and there was even more plot than I expected!

I also quite liked how the first chapter, even though it's only one chapter, told us all we needed to know about the world above, the situation our heroine was in and what was going on. Some people need countless of words to build their world, but these authors managed to build it without info-dumps and without endlessly long descriptions. And they repeated the process again with the world below, the world of the monsters.

The journey of the heroine is also quite amazing. I have to admit that at times things go a little fast, but everything that happened fitted the characters. Where the focus in the beginning is on the bond between the heroine and her monsters, it's clear that the focus slowly shifts towards the more political aspect of the book. And it's quite clear the authors really thought about all of this quite well! Just like they clearly picked the right heroine for this story.

I'd love to read more books set in this world!

This was interesting. Not exactly what I expected, but I really liked it.
The pacing was a tiny bit faster than I would’ve liked, not giving us a lot of time to get to know our characters and form the connection that I really wanted.
There was quite a bit of ‘I’m gonna fight this’ that a little too quickly turned into basically ‘what the hell, let’s do this’.

The sex sort of made up for it though.
Sort of, at least.
It was kind of repetitive, but it Was hot.
And the monsters definitely had monstrous qualities, like, interesting flavors.😂 So that was fun.

It wasn’t perfect, but I did enjoy it.

4.5 stars, 4 spice.

Y’all know I’ve been on a big monster kick lately and this came into my life at the perfect time. Fated mates? Special equipment? Nutritional baby batter? Say less.

This is a dystopian, hunger games vibe in which young women are sacrificed to the underworld to keep a peace treaty between the below and the above. Our FMC is unlucky enough to have her name drawn, and thus begins her smutty journey into the abyss. A very sticky journey, since she can’t consume the food down there or she’ll get sick. Yup, you guessed it—she has to survive on her mates’ special juice alone. But at least the flavors are fun.

These authors did a fantastic job of creating an immersive world that didn’t feel overwhelming, a difficult task when it comes to fantasy/PNR. The chemistry between the characters was palpable right off the bat, and I loved how the monsters were genuinely so caring towards the FMC.

Plot was very unique, spice was excellent, would definitely recommend for monster/RH lovers!

Post apocalyptic lite. Love that this book isn't focused on the post apocalyptic worldscape and is instead focused on the characters and story development. The authors use the back drop of a post apocalyptic civilization to to paint a picture of how one person's strength can be the impetus for change. Definitely worth the read.

This was interesting. Some parts were a little too out there for me personally (her having to eat their come as a meal replacement because she’s allergic to all food is a no for me) but it’s a quick read and kinda fun.

I didn’t like how quickly the ending went. A lot of the events are not the result of anything Será does which makes it seem like she has no agency, which she kind of doesn’t. I just didn’t appreciate how easily everything was resolved at the end.

This was a fine way to spend a few hours but definitely wasn’t mind blowing. Not my favorite type of monster romance.

Sadly the best thing about this is the cover. I hadn’t heard of this book before seeing a few people share the cover and I was intrigued, I love a monster romance and this gorgeous cover had me grabbing it off kindle unlimited. But right from the start this world didn’t make sense and I wanted more understanding of what was being set up. The politics and post apocalyptic vibes and just the whole world was lacking and left a lot unexplained. A lot of the dialogue and the writing was just awkward and cringe and even being here mainly for the human heroine-3 monsters reverse harem…the steamy parts were even dull. The monsters are pretty much all cinnamon roll type of heroes who were interchangeable but had different flavored, well you know 💦 (marshmallow, chocolate, and cinnamon roll). The monsters being called a trifecta was odd, I don’t know this was just so much of a miss for me.

Couldn't even get past the premise... I'm really over the bizarre "must be a virgin" trope by way of having a hymen. It makes zero sense or desirability as any type of fetish or kink (or whatever) in an adult romance/erotic story. It immediately, always creeps me out & throws me out of the believability of the story or my desire to read it. Which makes me think it's some type of "s!ut" shaming nonsense in a book inherently aimed at women. The other alternative is it's something to do with pedophiles. I mean... young, powerless, innocent girl/women being forced into situations "for their own good & happiness." 🙄 If age-play is your kink just be honest about it & stop this weirdo gross stuff.

Captured by the monsters

This book is sweet, hot and unique all at the same time. Serafina has lived her life just hoping that she does not get picked in the stupid, idiotic lottery that send girls to the below. Because nothing good happens to those girls right? She couldn't be more wrong, she just doesn't know it yet.
I absolutely loved this book, it is an unusual love story that grabs you and doesn't let you go. You don't think you are going to fall for these monsters, but you can't help yourself because damn they are something special. I absolutely loved this book

Honestly, I don’t even know where to start with my review for Captured by the Monsters. This book was unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

If you’re a fan of snarky heroines, possessive and lovable monsters, tons of action and drama, with a heaping dose of spice—you should definitely read Captured by the Monsters!

If I didn't know, I would think this was written by a man. It reads like a fantasy erotica, not an actual story.

The only food available to her is their cum. Uhm? Humans can't live on a liquid diet indefinitely.
Even if she's their fated mate, they wouldn't want her if her hymen was broken and she wasn't a virgin??
They leave women to die willy-nilly in their poisonous atmosphere, even though they are desperate to find mates?

Sera was a bit whiney in parts of the story and annoyed me in other parts; it made it hard for me to connect with her. Also, the "big showdown" was anticlimactic. Thank goodness for the spice level, multiple POV, and humorous moments . Overall, it was a nice read and I'm satisfied with how it ended. Maybe I'll reread and be able to connect with Sera more.

By the cover and the blurb, I was expecting something slower and maybe darker. I was caught between two and three stars. As a standalone, it was rounded but it felt rushed. Insta love, puppy like protective shadows and a stubborn, optimistic woman. The trio were sweet but sort of blended together. The pregnancy decision was a bit weird, as was the food. Lots of sex, betrayal, death, war and a happy ending tied up in a bow. Its one of those quick ones to just go along with.

This was so frustrating. The plot was fine, whatever, it hit the genre marks. Downgraded from a 3 (good and as expected) to a 1.5/2 for the end.

Spoilers, so be aware.

You have a character who, very early on, declares she is child free by choice. She later discovers she is going to have to be bred. Because magical heat. She struggles with this and her mates say they'll wait for her to come to terms. Then she becomes the Queen, and gets told no worries, she won't have to get pregnant, her body will be too busy fueling the life force crystals! Great! The authors gave a great out.

So WHY in the epilogue does she realize she IS pregnant? Not only that, but that she's happy about it! Really? Look, im all good with "magic mates and a baby" stories. Yes it is a genre trope, but it can be done really well, and I've seen it work well.

But why give us a CFBC heroine, have her struggle with this expectation, give her an OUT, and then on the last page undo it.

Seriously, so disappointing.

I love a good monster romance, and this has potential. It was like a Handmaids Tale meets Hunger Games dystopian future where women 18-25 are chosen by lottery to go from The Above (Earth) to The Below. Not much is known about The Below except women are never seen again.

To me the set up of the very minimal action was too long and drawn out. "Plot" or "action" came in awkward spurts in the last 40% of the book, where it felt rushed - as did the conclusion.

These authors individually are amazing, their stories and characters completely engross you within the worlds they create. Together…wow.

Somehow the authors were able to create an extensive world, more like two worlds, with rich history, lore and characters. Although labeled as a monster romance, it was more than that. I love learning about the history and seeing the changes that the worlds have gone through. I do hope they expand the series more so that we can see the results from this book.

As for the characters, their journey was focused on coming together both from different worlds but also as different individuals. Our FMC was strong, determined and confident, a great character. The stars of the book, of course, are the monsters. From their physical attributes, varying personalities and… extras the authors added, I enjoyed every interaction with them.

A great standalone for monster romance lovers.

This book really pulls you in quick and takes you to a whole new world. We first meet Sera two days from being able to live her own life, instead of being chosen to go to the below.
When only a few days after the last women got sent to the below. She is chosen to be sent down, but when she gets down to the below things are not as she expected. When Axton, Rowen and Sylan find Sera things get hot fast as well as getting to see the bonds grow between them. Even though Sera fights the idea of mates she also can't stop wanting them either.
They all go through so many twists and turns right upto that amazing ending that Sera and her trifecta deserve and especially within that little epilogue

Captured by the Monsters is based in a post apocalyptic world where theres a tentative peace between the Human World in The Above and the Monsters that live in The Below. Girls that react a certain age are put up in a ballot to be sent to The Below.

Sera (FMC) is unfortunately one of 5 picked and dropped into a new world that shes ill prepared for thrusting her into a trifecta of Monsters - Sylan, Axton and Rowen. Its a fast paced, action packed read with plenty of steamy scenarios. I really liked the relationship Sera had with the Monsters. It was sweet at time especially with all the anxieties they all had within their group. It was a great read

Darn!! I really wanted to love this!

I love monster romances, but am not that big into reverse harems. I think this book solidified that I don’t like RH:( I prefer everyone to be together I guess🤷🏼‍♀️

I also thought the world was not explained to the extent that I would like. For example, so many human women are unalived in this book. But the heroes say that their people cherish women??? Like the women at the beginning of the book that didn’t get chosen…why did they have to die?? There are more things I just didn’t get but I won’t get into more now haha!

Anyways, I was loving this at the beginning! But then once all the political and war stuff started happening I just got bored. And that’s just my reading taste I guess!
