Joint pain, chronic fatigue, hair loss, eczema, and plain old smelly gas. At first, you blamed it on getting older, even if you are in your twenties. Now? There are just too many issues to ignore. More importantly, you’re tired of waiting to feel better—you won’t ignore these symptoms anymore.
No matter your age, gender, or background, if this sounds like you, it’s time for a change. It’s time to ditch the toxins and finally come clean.
In Dirty Girl, physicians and functional medicine experts Wendie Trubow and Ed Levitan let you in on the answers you’ve been looking for to feel your best, age gracefully, and finally understand what your body has been trying to tell you. Along with stories from Wendie’s own detoxification journey, you’ll learn what other patients have done to identify the toxins causing chaos and illness and eliminate them from their lives. This how-to book shows you what to focus on, why a personal evaluation is a must, and how to take the first step—and the next—toward the healthiest, happiest you.
Full disclosure: I am not a healthy eater and I do not have the healthiest living style. I still think whiskey is wonderful and that peanut M&M's are vitamins. That being noted, I very much enjoyed large swaths of this book and highly endorse it. Read it. Buy a copy for your friends who are actually trying to get healthier (I did). The authors' expertise is clear, as is the book's overall structure, and they write in a fun and not preachy, practical way. Dr.'s Trubow and Levitan have produced an easy to read manual that covers a fairly wide range of practices that average people can actually do to live a healthier and perhaps even happier life. And, as you would expect from Dr. Trubow, there are snarky, fun comments throughout it.
As someone who has struggled with many chronic health conditions for a good few years, I was relieved to find this book. It covers so much useful ground around clean lifestyles and proper detoxification, and in a very readable way. I read it cover to cover in two days and will be returning back to it time and again on this detox journey I'm certain.
I would have given it 5* but I have two stylistic reservations: I am not a fan of all the '*'s over curse words - particularly when they are words like 'hell', spelt in this book as 'h*ll'. That's bizarre. Secondly, a non fiction book of this nature should really have an index.
What a great read! I feel highly educated and motivated to start detoxing and live my best clean life.
The key is to take it one step at a time. It can feel super overwhelming if you look at all the statistics and advice she gives, but breaking it down makes it seem so much more doable. Start with makeup, then move to hair products, then household cleaners, then detergent and so on.
I truly believe that everyone should read this book (or any similar book) and apply the knowledge into their life. Optimal health IS achievable and should be the standard. I want to live a long, healthy life until at least 100 years old and I now have the tools to do so!!
