A lot of what was started in the last volume continues here, in terms of the deep dive into the animal society that Legosi and his friends inhabit. The story also is pushed along smoothly in these chapters, but not in a rushed pace or in a way that seems silly in a way that doesn’t match the tone of the series. I do enjoy the silliness that is still integrated in most of the chapters, but it is certainly getting more serious, a little darker with the inclusion of Melon. I think these developments are also directly related to the growing relationships between Legosi and Louis which I am always here for. The more intertwined these two’s lives become the more interesting the story gets.

I would say though, Haru and Legosi’s relationship seems to get lost frequently in recent chapters, although not so much that her character or their relationship in the story no longer makes sense. I would just like seeing a little more of them together, and in more settings where they get to be teens first and brooding, worried animals, hung up on the herbivore/carnivore dynamic second.

This is a volume with many ludicrous plot developments and way too much moping and noodling about. I'm still enjoying the series overall, but if I didn't already know there were only half a dozen volumes left, this is the point where I'd start to wonder if this series is ever going to get anywhere and if I should bother continuing.

there's too much going on at the same time and it's a little confusing. itagaki keeps introducing more characters and conflicts that even tho they're connected to the main plotline it doesn't feel like that, at least not to me. idk this volume felt particularly messy but we'll see how the story develops

You gotta admire Paru for trying her hand at big action set pieces that she's clearly not that interested in.

If you're this far in and haven't realized by now, Beastars is a social commentary on minoritized human races except in the form of a completely animal world through different animal species to appeal to a wider audience.

The series talks about discrimination, harassment, taboos of interspecies dating, government-sponsored bonuses and everyday privileges for same species marriage ("pureblood beasts") and any children they have (which also sets non-whyt and same-sex parents at a disadvantage IRL), with consistent dialogue about the mental struggles and health disorders that many species develop because of toxic politics and societal effects. This is manifested in numerous characters, but the struggle is especially highlighted within the last few volumes through Legoshi's mom, one of many mixed-species children in the series.

His mom grows victim to anxiety, depression, and suicide, not being able to accept herself as the child of a komodo dragon and gray wolf. She is encapsulated in her own hatred of herself, locking herself away in a room where she doesn't allow even her own family to see her until she takes her own life.

A pure-species supremacist group is introduced in the last half of the book which I'm intrigued to see where it leads. The leader is a musk cat (or civet cat) which eats coffee beans and uses it's own poop as reward to its subjects and considered a luxurious type of coffee in many parts of the world. The volume closes with a shot of the head of the group, a seemingly mild-mannered and presentable character which is often the case with many bigots and racists on the surface...

Paru Itagaki is an excellent illustrator and even draws moods into the shading of the background patterns especially well. She's clever in her character designs and it's apparent in every newly introduced character that she spent quite some time developing their personality before setting them into the story and what they are meant to embody -- paralleling humans of the real world, in the good and the particularly evil ways of human society.

Good to learn about this world as we delve more into the themes of racism from a pretty rare point of view being how society views mixed race families. Which I do find interesting as this seems to be the growing theme of this series. Also love to learn more about Yafya and Legosi's past.

Introduction:
In this volume Legoshi parts ways with his mom, and is back trying to find Melon. Juno asks Legoshi for love advice about Louis.
A brief side story on how Yahya's mouse army came to work for him. Legoshi then finds Melon's trail by finding his tattoo artist. Which leads to encounter with the shishigumi, who might know Melon's weakness. A new villian is introduced, who is a small fluffy civet, who is a blood purist and wants no hybred animals to exist. Also we get to see how Gosha (Legoshi's granpa) lives.

Back to finding melon:
After parting with his mother Legoshi does some soul searching at a food stand before returing to yahya to asking if he can work with in to find melon. Yahya refuses, so Legoshi starts working on his own to find melon. Yahya still enable Legoshi to track Melon, by giving him melon's mask.

Love advice for Juno:
Juno know realises she is in love with Louis, so she seeks out the help of the only other carnivore she knows who is also in a romantic relationship with an herbivore, Legoshi. Juno has matured in a way she no longer cares about living up to society's expections at the cost of her happiness. She has decided to pursue louis romaticly. I think thier is a parallel to be made between Juno and Legoshi's mom. Both where young, beautiful female wolfs who cared deeply about being loved by the majority. Only Juno has desided to break with expectations to life the life that makes her happy. Little does she know Louis has similar feeling for her as well.

New villian/Melon's weakness:
A new villian was introduced in this volume, who is a civet and a blood purist. He attepted to have his bat assassins get rid of the hybred children Gosha watchs on his day off.

Conclusion:
This was an interesting volume due the sheer amount of stories going on at the same time. I also liked the new villian he seems like a good counter to Melon as a villian. I bet thier interaction will be interesting.

No, me calmo.

Another satisfying Beastars' volume, where the pace can seem to slow down a bit, but there's actually so much going on! If you have got to this point, just got ahead and keep reading, not much point on talking about it.

But, yes, we get some tender moments with Legoshi's mom's story. There's quite a lot of Juno, Louis, and some side stories that have Itagaki going back to the social critique that she's so good at... Small Lives Matter!

More talk about racism and politics in the world of Beastars, now with a few more ass-pulls and something about Legoshi being the fated link between all animals or whatever.

This volume is half romance/societal exploration and half drama/plot action. Another great volume.
Juno is in love with Louis, and they go for tea twice a month or so. However, Louis isn’t sure how he feels and is engaged to a deer for a political marriage. Juno seeks help from Legosi, the healed “interspecies expert”, and she talks about her confusion of hunger and love. Juno is a fun character, as she can’t hide her feelings and keeps blurting out to everyone that she’s in love with a deer, in a very aggressive fashion. We also see more examples of how same species couples get advantages, societal and monetary. People treat Legosi and Juno extremely well when they go out to eat and talk, assuming that they’re an attractive wolf couple. This all matches up with what I said in my review of the previous volume, that while there is a push for inter species friendships and tolerance, same species relationships are highly rewarded and anything different is outcast. There's a very false tolerance of inter species couples or even friendships, and an even higher intolerance of hybrid children, which we continue to learn more about in the later parts of this volume.
We get a chapter about the backstory of Yafya's mice that help him out, an interesting species because they're so incredibly small and have much shorter lifespans. They have a group mentality that helps them gain importance despite being small in the scale of other animals. We also find out that Melon has no taste buds, I don't know if this was ever specifically mentioned at before or only mentioned, but it's interesting. We already know he exclusively hunts for sport anyways. Back to the main plot, we go to a tattoo parlor that Melon frequents. This is a catalyst for the story. We learn that Melon has been going to this back-alley tattoo parlor to cover up his leopard spots with Melon leaves. His tattoo artist, Holger, is a sloth, which means his tattoos are extremely painful and bloody, but Melon likes this, as he is ever searching for feeling. Legosi follows his scent there but ends up 12 hours after Melon had. I don't understand the significance, if any, but he gets a tattoo while overhearing clues, The tattoo says “July 5th Wednesday” what does this date mean? Do I just not remember or is this random and unimportant or something we find out later? Regardless, he thinks Melon may be out at sea because of what he overheard Holger saying. So Legosi goes to the sea, but alas- it was a trap! Melon shows up, all chaotic and laughing, and tells the shishigumi to eat Legosi. The Shishigumi talk about how much they hate their new boss as soon as he disappears, and resolve to drown Legosi instead (they are no longer the old Shishigumi that thrived for feasting). When is Legosi not in danger? They tie him to a chair and put his feat in cement, saying that they will get rid of Melon soon enough because they know of his weakness. Intrigued, Legosi asks them to tell him the weakness if he can get back by 30 minutes. Shocked, the shishigumi say, "sure, why not?" and then we remember good old Zaguán the seal! And how good Legosi has gotten at sea speak!!! Legosi is saved by words Zaguán told him to use in case of danger in the sea, and the Shishigumi have to tell him what they know. But, turns out they don't know his actual weakness entirely.
Legosi finds out about a group of pure blood extremists that try to eradicate mixed groups called The Kopi Luwak, run by bats and their civet boss(“ghost cat”) Legosi, rightly so, is concerned about getting help from them to take down Melon. All I can think of, is that we'd be taking down one evil and letting another thrive, no matter who survived or died in that situation. The Kopi Luwak are even a gang that Gosha has fought in the past, and fights in the last chapter of the volume.
As the volume ends, we are unsure what the next steps of taking down either Melon OR the Kopi Luwak will be. But the hybrid stuff really has gone all around and continues to be slowly expanded upon each volume, which is great. I'm curious to see where things will go from here, but I imagine Legosi will be diving head first into danger again really soon.

3.5 stars, rounded up. More interesting expansions to the universe. I thought Legoshi speaking sea creature language to save himself was really cool. Also liked how Juno is now thinking about interspecies relationships herself and questioning the status-quo. Looking forward to seeing more of the pureblood gang and their civet leader.

Tras algunos vuelcos en la historia que me dejaron los pelos como escarpias hasta el punto que casi dejo la lectura. Este tomo ha sido más fácil de leer y me he reconciliado un poco con la historia y el camino que va cogiendo. Chulísimo

The sixteenth installment of the Beastars series opens, unsurprisingly, with a synopsis of past events alongside a visual depiction of its dramatis personae, following which is a flashback of when Legoshi was in primary school, interacting with his presently deceased mother through a hole in a door before she took her life. However, she still considered her life successful when interacting with her son via his out-of-body experience. His grandfather Gosha has a spat with the current Beastar, the equine Yahya. Afterward comes news that the gray wolf survived his bullet wound and has left the hospital on a special full moon known as a deep night when he engorges himself through food.

The red deer Louis, meantime, ponders reinvolvement with the Shishi-gumi, interacting with the female wolf Juno, whom he has seen more since graduation. They also argue, after which she visits Legoshi for romantic advice about falling in love with an herbivore as he had done with the dwarf rabbit Haru. The scene then changes to a group of diminutive rat vigilantes known as the 500 Cornered Rats Corps, who only steal from other criminals and are arrested, hassling others in jail before Yahya comes and interrogates them, asking about the half-leopard, half-gazelle Melon.

Melon chances a fast-food restaurant, noticing his sense of taste is off, after which he goes to a tattoo parlor where he had gotten tattoos of melon leaves to cover his leopard spots from a sloth artist with delayed conversational responses, Legoshi at the same place overhearing his eventual words to the hybrid. The wolf goes to the seashore to think, during which Melon and the Shishi-gumi mob he heads arrive, with the lupine threatened by the tried mafia technique of cementing his feet and dropping him into the water. Therein arises the promise that if Legoshi survives, they share the vulnerabilities of their leader.

The final chapter deals with Gosha volunteering at a mixed-species daycare center where bat janitors sanitize, only for them to have ulterior motives that tie into a species-purity group known as Kopi Luwak. The manga has significant anecdotes following the main storyline regarding the lighting effects and the respective anime adaptation, among others. Overall, Volume 16 is another enjoyable entry in the series, given its action and revelations. However, as with prior entries, the author overlooks the gray area between species' diets, called omnivorism.

This might be my new favorite volume of this series.

Beastars has such an incredible premise, it's remarkable that the author is able to hit the mark every single issue and go above and beyond sometimes. This is one of those times where every single scene in this volume was so good I wanted it to be double the length!

There's so much happening here. The showdown between Legoshi and Melon is tense and wonderful. Melon is fucked up and has proven himself to be beyond saving and I adore the character so much. Juno and Louis are a strange but wonderful pairing. Both of them are so ridiculously overdramatic, I love it. Louis remains the king of my heart.

We also get more of Legoshi's family history as he talks to his mother, who, despite being dead, is able to give him some clarity on his childhood. The allegories in this series are beautifully done, and watching the rise of the movements for purebred and interspecies relationships is so on the nose it's uncomfortable. I love Legoshi and Juno bonding about having romantic feelings for herbivores and how to control themselves as well. Legoshi is such a great character who only feels more fleshed out with every volume. My favorite thing about Legoshi is although he is incredibly strong, determined, and iron-willed, he truly makes it out of dangerous situations because of his kindness and the friendships he's struck up with others. He's a fascinating character study.

I am infinitely interested in the new Kopi Luwak gang! The sneak peek of their leader had me cackling and I can already tell I will be a fan. We're finally getting some real villains in this series (aside from society as a whole) and I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here.

3.5 star. Of course my favorite aspect of this manga is Legosi and Haru. Their relationship is crazy complex and I want to see where is goes. But the story contradicts itself an awful lot. It's honestly getting too annoying and I'm hoping it has to do with translation errors. I mean like Legosi's grandfather is a pacifist and then 2 seconds later he is spilling everyones blood. Another example is instead of calling the cops Legosi fights this bad guy and then does something else really crazy I didn't think he believed in and then of course the fight was for nothing because the cops show up anyway. I think my mind melted after that chapter.

I am really enjoying the complications that come with all the different species though. It's kind of funny to realize that if a leopard was a humanoid and wore clothes they would all prefer plain colors because they have designs already on their skin. So every knew chapter comes with new understandings and I find it very interesting.

I have a lot more gripes I think than I do praises. It's just that I love the main characters so much but sometimes one of them will be put into that background so long that I'm not sure they are apart of the story anymore. Haru is the main essential for many many moons then she is gone and it doesn't seem like anyone notices or cares and then bam out of no where she is essential again.

I really just reading now to experience more scenes with them two together. They main story is getting so crazy and it's not really relatable and often doesn't make since to me.

This volume really made me think more about mixed species beasts and the lives they live. It almost seems like you’re destined to have a hard life if you’re mixed species. Looking at Legoshi’s mother, she started growing scales which caused he to alienate herself from everyone until she eventually killed herself. Then there’s the mixed species children that were almost hunted and killed by this organization that wants to purge mixed species beasts from the earth, if it weren’t for Gosha they all would have been killed.

The there’s Melon, even though he’s a complete villain you still can’t help but feel bad for him. The fact that he can’t taste any food is sad, and because he feels the need to kill herbivores but also is terrified of carnivores it all makes him completely alone in society. Even if Melon did trick Legoshi by making it seem like he was lonely, I’m sure there’s a part of him that still feels that way. But Melon is probably too far gone to be saved now. All this made me think if Legoshi and Haru would be taking too big of a risk by being together, there’s a chance their child’s life could go the route of Melon or Legoshi’s mother.

On a side note, I still don’t want Juno and Louis to be together lol. But that conversation between Juno and Legoshi about falling in love with herbivores was interesting.

The book opens with Legoshi talking with his late mother’s spirit. After a deep conversation, Legoshi wakes up and finds out that he is no longer able to work with the current Beastar to track down Melon. Legoshi goes against the Beastar’s wishes and tries to track down Melon a second time on his own. I loved this book! The author knew where to give answers and keep mystery. For example when legoshi wakes up from his near death state, it is not explicitly stated why he wakes up. Melon is also so well written. The scene where Melon says to legoshi “you’re living in a sentimental fantasy world.”, is perfect for the scene and Melon’s irredeemable villain character. Part way through the book; however, there is a side story of this gang of rats. To me this just felt unnecessary. They didn’t add much to the plot and were included in only a small part of the story. They are pretty forgettable to me. I loved this book and would recommend it to young adults and older teens due to the mature themes and violence. The book does not shy away from showing blood so be weary if you are sensitive to that.

So let me start by saying, it pays to be nice to people y’all! My guy Sagwan, is the freaking goat, or Seal if you wanna get technical ;).

This go around the action really picks up, Legoshi always manages to get himself into some crap and still stay true to his calm cool nature, guess he should thank his grandpas genes for that. We got a closer look at his mothers past, and some clarity as to why she made the choices she did. In those moments we also see how it affected Legoshi, even now, as he faces all the challenges thrown his way.

There’s a NEW threat introduced this volume, and it just proves that looks can be deceiving. Don’t worry though because one of our beloved characters will surely show they’ve got what it takes to help the young ones out. I thought Melon was scary, this next One is looking worse

Speaking of Melon, we learn a bit of why he’s the way he is. I kinda feel bad for him, but at the same time I don’t lol, he’s still crazy as he…..

There’s only 6 volumes left, this has been such a ride that just keeps getting better!

i'm gonna write this review for ALL of the volumes combined. so yeah. spoiler alert.

my favorite character is louis. my least favorite is the bunny. what's her name again? ugh. i forgot.

i mean, srsly, what's not to like about louis??? he sacrificed his own leg for legoshi!! that's like a whole new level of selflessness.

my favorite arc was the battle with the white bear (polar bear?). after that it kinda went to shit.

I'M SO MAD THAT LOUIS AND THAT GREY WOLF DIDN'T END UP TOGETHER.
THEY WERE SO CUTE UGGHHHHHHHHH

oh and i was SO sad when louis' dad died. i knew he barely appeared in the manga but he was just so kind. he gave louis everything he needed and always supported him no matter what.

not much else to say, i guess...
i just really liked the series. i was about to watch the second season after reading the manga, but then i realized, why bother? i know all the plot already.

So many awesome moments in this volume, but learning more about everything Legoshi and his mother suffered when he was just a puppy really hit me hard, to the point of tears. I'm glad that Legoshi got to have those moments with her, and that he's thinking about all she suffered as a mixed-species beast and taking that into account with his romance with Haru.

I also am glad to see Juno back in this context, I feel like she's grown up a lot too and, like Legoshi, is thinking seriously about things now. It's cool to see them in a context where they're just normal, casual friends.

Also, I just gotta say it: I love Melon. As a plot device, as a character, whatever have you, I find him so interesting. I said so in my last review, but I hope he becomes a friend of some kind. He may be twisted, but it's obvious he's suffered a ton. I want to know more about him! I'm excited to continue this arc!
