Leadership for introverts resembles a tree. For a tree’s canopy to be expansive and beautiful, it must have healthy roots, strong branches, and an environment in which it can flourish.

You’ll gain essential insights into how you can stop acting and embrace your true self.
“I have finally realized, to be happy I don’t need to change myself, I just need to be myself.” -Steve Friedman
When I wrote my memoir, In Search of Courage, I realized that the common thread of introversion I thought was a curse all my life was actually a blessing. For years I wore a mask at work and coped with my stress by sacrificing my health and personal relationships. Now I embrace my own introversion as a toolkit to become a happier me.
My purpose is to help other introverts accelerate the process by which they discover their strengths and apply them to their personal and professional lives. I seek to inspire others to overcome past obstacles and find joy, pride, and confidence in life.
I’ve retired from corporate America and enjoy sharing articles, books, quizzes, and resources through my website, BeyondIntroversion.com. I’m excited to combine my career experiences and my enthusiastic belief in introverts through my new leadership book, The Corporate Introvert: How to Lead and Thrive with Confidence.
I want to make something plain before I begin. Steve Friedman did not write The Corporate Introvert for me. While I’m introverted and follow his blog Beyond Introversion, I’ve never worked in a corporate environment, and I never intend to. So it was a little surprising that I collected quite a few ideas to help me in my noncorporate life.
Corporate work environments doubtless have things in common and differ from the nonprofit world in which I made my career. But I believe all work environments have certain things in common, such as working with other people. And any true introvert understands how perplexing these relationships can be in places where outgoing, attention-grabbing personalities seem to have all the advantages. Steve’s book excels by helping you dig into strengths you already possess so that you can use them to help your organization in ways that feel comfortable for you. He’s not suggesting you change your personality but figuring out ways to share all you have to offer authentically.
In using the metaphor of a tree for your career, he shares how to explore your hidden potential, your roots, to the tips of the branches, where he encourages you to blossom through leadership roles. In addition, he provides solid, practical exercises and advice to help you stretch and enjoy a productive and fulfilling career.
I recommend it to anyone who feels intimidated by the working world.
Spending most of my life as an Introvert and thinking I might have trained myself to be more of an Extrovert, I was curious to see what aspects of this book could help me with my business life.
What I found was that my definitions are not a one size fits all. Included in the book is a link for a quiz to see where your strengths lay and where you could use some assistance. I highly suggest you take 5-8 minutes and do the quiz. It adds another layer and personalizes the reading experience so that you can apply those items directly impacting your business life.
The author does a wonderful job supplying specific and easy to follow action items after each chapter as well as various worksheet links to enrich your reading experience. It’s basically an entire course in one book.
This read is not just for introverts but everyone who at times, needs some alone time, some peace or break from the rat race or just those who appreciate the art of reflection. It will give you a much better sense of how to deal with issues and real life applicable scenarios in your work situations. However there were a few times when I realized that some suggestions would also work in my personal life.
👍🏻 there were some helpful tools and frameworks to use and I enjoyed the manifesto at the end of the book 👎🏻 I didn’t feel the author leaned into the characteristics of an introvert enough when describing the tools, rather he just stuck some “introvert adjectives” to things when describing them. I was also hoping the aspects about leadership would be leading in general regardless of role, but he focused on if you were a manager specifically.
Discovering that I was an introvert was a real game changer in my life. Once I realized I wasn’t shy, awkward, or too quiet, it really helped build my confidence. I found this book especially helpful because it highlights introverts’ strengths, and encourages us to approach the workplace with confidence and authenticity. I would highly recommend this book to any introvert in a corporate setting!
Thanks to Steve Friedman for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A solid book of useful tips and advice for any introvert who seeks a corporate career! Starting by explaining introversion, the first chapters help you to identify the strengths you possess as an introvert and how to develop these in a corporate setting. Then, the book goes on to explain how to leverage these strengths in different areas and situations you may encounter at work, such as finding a new job or taking on a leadership position. Overall, it gives some very solid advice for many areas of working life. If you ever felt like your introversion is standing in the way of your career goals, I recommend reading this!
