Sex is intimate, and for some, it takes everything to bare it all... so when Misuzu was told that sex with her was "boring," she gave it up all together... and dating, too. So when, years later, she's asked out by her colleague, Mikage-san, she screws up her courage and gives it a shot. But it turns out Misuzu isn't the only one with baggage around sex. Can the two of them work together to overcome their hurdles, and enjoy each other as the couple they wish to be...?
Misuzu was traumatized by a past partner who told her she was boring in bed (always get a second opinion, everybody!), which has left her without a relationship for years. Her coworker, Mikage, is way into her and may be ready to restart those fires, but she isn’t the only one with issues making sparks fly.
Well, this is fine. And that’s about as much as I need to say, but I might as well flesh this out a bit, as it were. I mean, workplace romances are usually a nice change of pace from the normal high school drag and this deals with intimacy issues, which is pretty interesting too.
It just doesn’t quite get there for me - the characters are okay and they make a cute pair, but they don’t generate quite enough heat to make up for what they lack. I get that this is the point, but you have to make it believable that Misuzu is willing to try and kick celibacy for this guy.
I do appreciate the actual honesty between the pair and their willingness to make this work. Not all relationships have to be founded on sex, fun as it can be, so I like them trying to get everything right rather than just giving up.
It just feels very pedestrian, like the setting is hardly being used to its advantage. And seriously, what in the hell is up with those spotted eels? That’s a joke that feels so out of place and even moreso when it comes back - it smacks of an author not having confidence in their material.
Really, part of my problem is that Misuzu is so waifish and, not to invalidate her trauma, but her reactions to this are pretty extreme. It seems like the sort of thing she shouldn’t have just been waiting for a guy to come fix. She does come through when it counts, but her general demeanour puts her roughly on the level of a 2000s-era shojo heroine.
And while I think it’s bold for Mikage (and his dumb beauty mark - lord spare me from another manga pretty boy with one [or am I making a mountain out of a molehill?]) to be trying so hard while suffering from erectile dysfunction… look…
…sigh…
I don’t want to bring my day job into this, but we have pills for this now. Or therapy. Hey, therapy might benefit both these two. I think it’s sort-of nice that they want to tackle their trauma together, but they have healthy options that are not likely to ever get addressed.
It’s just a bummer to see people suffering and not thinking about what they could do to fix it. Hardly the first couple to do this, but… it irked me here a bit. They also discuss oral sex and hotels and such and then… apologize for being crude. Look, discuss the issue or don’t, but this pussy-footing doesn’t do the story any favours. It’s all too wishy-washy.
2.5 stars - it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine and it can be rounded up because it is, indeed, fine.. I don’t know if I’ll bother doing a second volume because there’s nothing particularly gripping here. It just feels like a lot more could be done with this and it doesn’t sit right with me.
If there's any one point in this book's favor, it's that it seems to understand that the attitude of "dating = sex" is wrongheaded and that each couple needs to make their own decisions based on their wants and comfort levels. I'm not sure that it quite goes far enough on that front, but I appreciate the baseline idea as it explores its leads' anxieties on that front.
Now, I am sure anyone that reads the description of the book and takes a moment to think about the title of the series will understand that this book involves sexual content. As such their are moments of nudity, discussions about sex, and although not hentai levels of sexual details there are still moments of intimacy found within these pages. As such please consider this before buying this for younger readers or if you are easily offended by mature content in your reading materials.
My only real complaint is how the book (although I understand why thanks to the subject matter in question) glorifies potential one night stands between co-workers and how even the other co-workers that find out about it automatically assume there is sex happening right from day one as though the whole office were some kind of porno video ready to roll. Certainly the main characters felt something for each other thanks to work conditions but one bad rain storm and suddenly they are finding out about the sexual problems they have as they retreat to his place which is in walking distance.
That said the artwork is really stellar showing the main characters (and support cast but mostly them) go through a range of emotions as they deal with their intimate complications and learn to be together. Another thing I enjoyed was the manga was not entirely super serious even though it deals with sexual dysfunctions like when Mikage (the boyfriend) starts imaging the spotted garden eels at the aquarium start mocking him or when Misuzu (the girlfriend is invited to drink with clients because she has a high tolerance for alcohol and Mikage ends up drinking in excess because he felt sorry for her (and got sick for his efforts.) All in all a good book about overcoming your shortcomings when you want to please your partner (especially considering the characters are getting up there in age so might want children some day.)
This is such a good josei manga!!!! It’s fresh and funny and definitely quirky with really nice artwork and endearing characters. I love that these two are trying to work through their personal sexual hang ups together. I feel like in this day and age everyone expects their partners to just know what to do during smexy times and that everyone’s tastes are similar and bodies work the same because of adult entertainment. But that’s not real smex. And really good intimacy takes trust and zero judgment. I’m really curious to see how he got to the point of having E.D. Everything so far has been addressed in a very sweet and open way that’s really nice and I would hope something to strive for when being honest. That garden eel phone charm hallucination he keeps having is hilarious!!! It’s actually pretty spot on in how I think it would patronize someone as well, it’s face just seems like a jerk lol!!!! Really liking this one and eagerly awaiting volume two!!!!!
This is my version of hell. Cute guy at work who is the epitome, or at least we're told he is the characters aren't really fleshed out besides their sexual dysfunction, of sweet, kind and cool, who worships you...who you can't do the nasty with...because you're both traumatized about sex and though you're basically 30 years old you haven't taken the initiative to seek a doctor or counselor to help you overcome these issues...that you're 30 and can't say I need you to rim me aggressively while humming Mozart's 5th symphony because that's just who I am this week...
Listen, they're sweet, they're going to go on some journey of self discovery where they can have a sexual relationship sometimes, when the stars align and Saturn is in retrograde and that will be enough because they are so sweet and sweetly in love...and well the art was fine, there wasn't much depth and the characters were a bit unknowable and flat but fine...I just personally cannot. I may read the second volume someday but likely not because I was on edge the entire time.
This was sweet. It’s probably on a spice level of any individual chapter of Get a Life, Chloe Brown. I like that a manga series is taking on themes of sexual incompatibility in past relationships and erectile dysfunction. I also liked that the characters have an explicit talk about what does and doesn’t feel good and how to make their experience with each other better. It’s important to show couples having these frank conversations. I’ll read volume 2.
I understand the awkward situation between these two getting together. She was called boring in bed while he gets so nervous. The first couple of times will always be awkward and nervous so it was good to see how real this can be. However even though they are awkward they are so cute and sweet. I love how she told him to be honest and be open with each other as well. I can't wait to read more to see where these two go...
Not really sure how I feel about this first volume. It seems sweet and I like how communicative the leads are with each other but it also feels like it's lacking...something. The volume moves really fast as well and there were quite a few typos. But I am willing to give the series another volume try and see if it improves.
Ehh, not my thing. It's not bad, but it goes so deep into 'realistic' communication that the dialogue felt a little stilted and overall it's not a very fun read. Didn't love the art style either, so moving on to something new.
This manga is SO REAL! I love how honest and open they are being in the relationship and with their bodies. I can't wait to see where the rest of this goes. Also, the sea snake. Hilarious.
I enjoy reading this manga as a josei that looks at the topic of dating, sex, and relationship expectations. It's not the best josei I've ever read, but I did enjoy it.
Communication is key and they are cute, but the problems with sex cut to childhood flashback bit was awkward. I don’t think I’d continue this as the pacing feels strange.
This is an extremely thoughtful manga about romance & sex that I think is a fantastic starting point for someone who might be open to exploring beyond the way it's usually considered and spoken about. It does the same thing that another good manga series I've read does (Show It To Me, Baby/Kisarazu-kun no XX ga Mitai), but it doesn't push the issue nearly as far (which is fine). However, even broaching the topic in a series that's hetero is kind of a big deal to me so I gave it 5 stars.
However, if this is not your first time tackling these issues in fiction, it's really like a 3 star read, and thus, I didn't continue reading past the second volume. I still think it's good and sweet, just not something I want to keep reading more and more of.
