Lucy Kincaid #14

Too Far Gone

Rate this book

Too Far Gone by Allison Brennan is a thrilling addition to the Lucy Kincaid series that will leave readers breathless.

When a man who appears mentally unstable holds a group of people hostage and dies in a shootout with the FBI, Special Agent Lucy Kincaid is assigned to investigate what happened. Up until two months ago, McMahon was a respected scientist—then his wife left him, he lost his job, and was arrested for assaulting a former colleague. The one person who might have answers — his research assistant — has disappeared.

While Lucy is investigating this bizarre case, her husband Sean is on top of the world: his son Jesse is visiting for the summer. They are having a blast, until someone follows them. Sean is positive that the surveillance is connected to Jesse’s step-father—a man who had once laundered money for a violent drug cartel. But when Lucy and Jesse are run off the road, they begin to wonder if the attack is connected to Jesse … or Lucy’s current case.

Nothing is what it seems—not the McMahon investigation or the car accident. As Sean and Lucy dig deep into the lives of everyone involved, one thing becomes clear: If they don’t find the truth fast, everyone they care about is in danger.

FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid accompanies the team assembled to address a hostage situation at a coffee shop, backing up the negotiator. Customers and the manager are being held at gunpoint by Charlie McMahon, a research scientist who recently lost his job, his family and what appears to be his sanity. He’s shot and killed when the team attempts a rescue and he fires his weapon. As they explore his life to figure out why McMahon unraveled and what he wanted, the case becomes more complex and extends beyond the events at the coffee shop. Meanwhile, Lucy’s husband Sean Rogan is enjoying some precious time with his thirteen-year old son Jesse whose mother has agreed to let him spend six weeks in San Antonio. However, things get complicated after two threats that appear to be targeted towards Jesse.

The McMahon case pointed to something fishy going on with his research and his employer. Lucy and the primary investigator did a great job following the clues and not being consumed by supposition. I liked how they doggedly tracked the evidence to resolve the questions surrounding McMahon’s ill-fated decisions at that coffee shop. Some of the revelations were a surprise but for the most part, I was able to deduce most of the answers.

Even though the case was interesting, I was most absorbed by the threats against Jesse and his developing relationship with Sean. Even though their love for each other is obvious, they are both trying to figure out how to relate to each other. His mother Maddie and stepfather Carson added even more conflict to the mix and I liked how Lucy used her skills to support Sean, Jessie and even Maddie, keeping things from irrevocably combusting. The final resolution shouldn’t have been surprising but elements of it were unexpected. I’m still loving this on audio as the narrator has become the voice in my ear for not only Lucy but for the storytelling. I enjoyed everything about this one, even those moments that gave me heartburn.

I have been reading this series as a group read, one book per month with the Max Revere Series thrown in too. I love this series; it just keeps getting better and better and I enjoy each book more and more. Seeing Sean and Lucy grow in their relationship and become a strong united team is wonderful and rare in a mystery series. Here we see Sean struggle with a threat to his son, Jesse, and Lucy, even while embroiled in an FBI case, is his strength and rock.

A man takes hostages in a coffee shop. A shootout with SWAT results in his death. The why consumes Lucy and the deeper she delves into Charles McMahon the more bizarre this case becomes. Two months ago, he was a loving father and respected scientist. Then he begins behaving erratically, his wife leaves him, he is fired from his job. Lucy is determined to uncover the why.

Sean is on top of the world. His son, Jesse, is with him for six weeks and they are really connecting as father and son until Sean spots a tail one night. Sean knows in his gut that Jesse's stepfather is behind this and that he is up to no good. When Lucy and Jesse are run off the road, Sean must also consider that it could be Lucy's current case.

Ominous, engrossing, and suspenseful!

In this compelling fourteenth installment in the Lucy Kincaid series, Too Far Gone, Brennan has written an intricate, action-packed, police procedural that has FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid and her fellow law enforcement colleagues delving into a case that on the surface seems to be a simple hostage situation but which quickly unfolds into a complex case involving a suspicious death, a missing assistant, and a pharmaceutical company with something to hide.

The writing is taut and precise. The characters are rugged, intelligent, and relentless. And the two main plots intertwine and unravel into a seamless, entertaining tale full of deception, secrets, corruption, scandal, cover-ups, manipulation, family drama, jealousy, violence, and murder.

Overall, Too Far Gone is a multi-layered, captivating mystery that highlights that money and greed are often the root of all evil. And even though it's another wonderful addition to the series that fans are sure to appreciate it can also be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.

Thank you to Minotaur Books for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

People have been taken hostage by a gunman in a local diner. FBI Special Agent Lucy Kincaid is assigned to help the hostage negotiator. When the gunman dies in a shootout, it looks like the case can be closed. But Lucy has questions. Why did Charlie McMahon, a respected scientist, suddenly crack? Why did he get fired from his job? Why did his wife leave him? The more Lucy digs, the more questions she has.

Meanwhile Lucy's husband, Sean Rogan, is happy. His teenage son Jesse is visiting for the summer. After picking up takeout at their favorite restaurant, Sean notices they are being followed. Sean suspects that Jesse's stepfather, a man previously in trouble with the law, may be having them watched.

This is the 14th book in the Lucy Kincaid series. Lucy's investigation into Charlie McMahon was complicated. Questions about his life in the past few weeks leads to the discovery of a dead body and a missing co-worker. This mystery was just "OK" to me. The best part of the book was the sections about Jesse's visit and the fact that someone is running surveillance on him and Sean. I was totally glued to the book while reading this story. It was definitely the best part of the book. My rating: 4 Stars.

Fourteen books and this series is still going strong for me. Lucy is involved in the investigation of a man who, for no apparent reason, goes off the rails one day and takes a coffee shop full of people hostage. This was a different type of case from the usual crimes she is involved with and I found it both interesting and refreshing.

Meanwhile, Sean's son is staying with them for the summer. I love the new family they're trying to form, all the while struggling with the uncertainty of their fears of rejection and getting to truly know each other after being deprived of a relationship all of Jesse's life. Of course, Jesse's mom and stepfather are still throwing obstacles every way they can and bringing more danger into all of their lives with continued deception.

Looking forward to #15 and finding out what happens with some unresolved issues at the end of this book.

The blurb didn't lie; this book was intense. There was a lot going on with two concurrent but unrelated mysteries. First, we have an unemployed scientist who takes a coffee shop hostage. That investigation was fascinating, involving medicine, a potential treatment for some Alzheimer's patients and intertwined themes of loyalty and treachery. The other mystery revolves around FBI agent Lucy Kincaid's family.

This is book #14 and I haven't read any of the previous books so I was confused at times, trying to keep characters straight. Overall, it worked pretty well as a stand alone; I was able to appreciate the character development and growth even though I came late to the party.

The mysteries kept me engrossed and just as important, the characters mattered to me. I especially felt for Lucy's husband Sean and his son Jesse. Their pain and their challenges jumped off the page and into my heart. So did the pain and sadness of Dr. Charlie McMahon, the scientist turned shooter. His story was heartbreaking and I was glad to see him get some justice.

Engrossing mysteries, heartbreaking stories, and unforgettable characters added up to an intense, engaging story that kept me up way past my bedtime.

I don’t know about you, but when a book starts off with a hostage situation I know it’s bound to be a good book. Lucy has just finished her Hostage Rescue training and is immediately thrown into one. I think it was good for her to see her experienced coworker have a bad outcome. They don’t always end as you would hope.
The case itself is quite interesting. There were many possibilities and the facts didn’t quite add up at times. I was as eager as Lucy was to figure out what was going on with the hostage taker.
There are always multiple story lines in Allison Brennan’s books. The other one is centered around Sean and his son, Jesse. Carson Blade is back to his old tricks and wants Sean to pay for turning Jesse against him. The plan he has come up with is poorly put together and Sean figures things out pretty quickly. There is a sad outcome to the whole situation and Sean and Jesse’s life may get a bit more complicated. I am looking forward to see what happens and have my fingers crossed for Sean and Lucy.

This family ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Each story in this series gets better and better. The characters and crimes immediately grab my attention and keep me reading until there are no more words. I loved seeing Sean and Jesse build their relationship. It was sad and scary but ultimately very satisfying to see karma at play for Carson. The brothers of Sean and Lucy are pretty fantastic and the epitome of alpha protectors. Kane is my favorite brother of theirs and I love his devotion to family. Also, Nate and Bandit were stars of this story and I loved spending more time with them!

It was fun to see two stories unraveling throughout this story. I enjoyed the backstory buildup in the FBI world as well. Can’t wait to see what is next for this family and world!

I don't usually read series, because I find I get bored with the characters after awhile. The Lucy Kincaid books are always enjoyable though. I like that the characters seem to grow and don't get stuck on the same issue all series. The only problem I had with this story was the two plot lines (the work one and the personal one). They just didn't come together as smoothly as I would have hoped. The one thing I loved is that I think Sean only called her Princess once in the entire book! Thank goodness. She's supposed to be a strong woman and he admires her brains, but then he calls her that and just goes against the type of relationship they supposedly have.

Two different cases to solve - one for Lucy and one for Sean. The first case starts the novel off with a mad/crazy man in a cafe talking to himself, then waving a gun around and grabbing a cafe worker. The FBI and SWAT are dispersed to the scene and some dialogue between the 2 starts but before any negotiations can take place, the man becomes more unstable and SWAT enters the cafe - the man draws down on them and it's game over - SWAT wins, but with no readily available answers as why this all happened.

The second case concerns Sean and his newly found son, Jesse. A nasty crew including Jesse's stepdad plan a kidnapping with possible murder against Sean and Lucy. Sean is again blind when it comes to family and he isn't as sharp as usual when it comes to protecting Jesse and Lucy. Accidents start to happen and everything is pointing towards Jesse's stepdad and his mom - but the legal authorities aren't convinced.

Love the Lucy Kincaid series, guaranteed to keep you guessing, on your edge, and a bit mad at the bad guys.

From the blurb: When a man who appears mentally unstable holds a group of people hostage and dies in a shootout with the FBI, Special Agent Lucy Kincaid is assigned to investigate what happened. Up until two months ago, McMahon was a respected scientist—then his wife left him, he lost his job, and was arrested for assaulting a former colleague. Sean is positive that the surveillance is connected to Jesse's step-father—a man who had once laundered money for a violent drug cartel. But when Lucy and Jesse are run off the road, they begin to wonder if the attack is connected to Jesse ... or Lucy's current case.

I missed book 13 so feel like I missed a lit bit of the story. I will go back and read it. This one I felt was a bit slower than all the others until the last 25%. I'm a tiny bit disappointed that Madison dies and won't be accountable for her crimes. It will be interesting to see how Sean, Lucy and Jesse move forward.

There was a lot going on in this one. We first have the case that Lucy was working on. It was easy to see what was going on with the supposed bad guy from the coffee shop once you knew where he was working. Then it seemed like a race for Lucy and the FBI to figure it out before the real bad guys did more damage. It was sad at the end of the book when all the info came out, sad that certain peoples greed caused so much damage when so much good was at stake.

The other drama from this book came from Sean and his son, Jesse. I liked that they were building a relationship. Of course Jesse's mom and step-dad didn't care for that. What happened was crazy! Of course someone who did the bad things they did before wouldn't think what they did in this book was that bad. I was glad they were found out despite what happened. I only hope that Sean and Jesse win the fight that seems to be coming.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, the book is too intense. There are so many crisscross storylines and things happening that Left me feeling tired and exhausted (I had to take a nap).

I’m unfamiliar with this series, if I had read any of the other previous 13 books maybe I would have been less overwhelmed and not as “overstimulated”

Then too there are other crime/detective novels with strong female leads (as detectives or doctors) that I like so much more. The initially story—a man appears to “go crazy” and the witness accounts don’t match either, intrigue me but at 54% with shot nerves, I’m quitting.

The title perfectly captures why this is a weak entry in the Lucy Kinkaid series - too far. As in:
* too many crisscrossing story-lines,
* too much melodrama from the Sean/Jesse/Madison story-line,
* too much repetitive explanation from too many characters filling in too many other characters.

Going "too far" in this one book won't make me quit the series - but it does remind me that an author can try to do too much in one book

It is never a dull moment in the Kincaid-Rogan household. Sean's son is officially out of WITSEC, and his mother and stepfather are living in Sacramento, per the stepfather's agreement with the AUSA. But Jesse gets to visit his biological father for six months this summer, and Sean couldn't be more ecstatic. But not everyone is happy about this arrangement. Carson, Jesse's stepfather, wants Sean out of his life for good, and he's willing to hire people to make it happen. What he doesn't expect is for his hired help to put Jesse and Madison in harm's way. Sean promises to keep them safe when he suspects that Carson is up to something, but even he cannot predict what's about to happen.

On the other side of town, though, Lucy is knee-deep in mysteries. Charlie McMahon has taken fifteen innocent people hostage at an out-of-town café, but according to everyone that Lucy and her team speak to, this is completely out of the ordinary when it comes to Charlie's behavior. Apparently the past few months have been out of the ordinary for him, as he's grown irritable and forgetful. Even his best friend, Paul Grey, hasn't been acting normal – but the FBI can't seem to get the answers they need since with every corner they turn, another roadblock appears. People are dying, drugs are being masked, and evidence is going missing and being shredded. The only thing that makes sense is to trace it back to Charlie and Paul's place of business: Clarke-Harrison Research – but none of the current employees are very forthcoming. In fact, one has been missing all week, and rumor has it that she's conducting an investigation of her own.

I enjoyed it, intense like usual. Once you’ve seen what happened at the coffee shop and realize who he was and where he worked, was able to realize where that portion of the book was going. When they kidnap Sean and his family at his house, it kind of reminded me of all those old cartoons, I believe the one that comes to mind is a Popeye cartoon where he was trying to beat the termites and he had put steel doors, the termites ate everything but the steel doors were still standing. Shawn had all this security and they said hell he had reinforced steel garage doors and front doors but were able to easily shatter his windows to get entry. I think you’ll be putting in thicker glass next time. Ha ha

Too Far Gone held my interest and was an enjoyable thriller. It actually felt like two books in one. Most of the Lucy Kincaid/Sean Rogan stories involve the couple working together. This book focused on an investigation by Lucy and her team without any RCK assistance. Meanwhile Sean is bonding with his son and dealing with a threat against their family. Superheroine Lucy has to deal with the threat while performing her job.

My only criticism is the way the stories were presented. There were chapters upon chapters devoted to one plot while the other sat on the sidelines. Eventually we would shelve that story and focus on the other. This presentation felt choppy and disjointed.

I enjoy the Lucy KIncaid series. This one was more personal than most that I have read. Lucy is so memorable that you don't need to read them in sequence. The story line is very good, and easy to relate to. Big drug companies can be very deceptive and hide secrets, as anyone that needs medication today or is waiting for a new drug to help with a serious illness knows.

Brilliant!

As always Lucy and Sean are unbeatable! They have to be some of my favorite characters. Jesse fits right in and was so happy to see Sean get time with his son. What a brilliant story! I love parallel storylines. Loved every page.

This one is part of the Lucy Kincaid series, but works perfectly as a standalone - it's the first of the series I have read.

FBI agent Lucy Kincaid is married to Sean Rogan, and lives in San Antonio. A hostage situation means she is called into work a new case involving a pharmaceutical company. In the meantime, Sean's son, Jesse, is staying with them for the summer. Jesse's mom, Madison, and stepdad, Carson, are not too happy about it. As Lucy gets to the bottom of her case, events change as a threat is made - but is it aimed at Lucy, Sean or Jesse?

This book does make reference to previous events, but enough information is given that you won't be lost or confused about situations.

Pretty bad book. Starts out looking like a 2-for-1 mystery bargain but both stories are executed so poorly that you're better off not reading it unless you're a die-hard fan of the series.

Way too many things that were cheap or unbelievable:

This series is average at best with some books that jump out positively or negatively, but the execution in this one is definitely at the bottom of the rankings.
A shame since the setups in the first few chapters were decent, but as a reader you end up feeling robbed more than reading a Dean Koontz mind control book.

No reason not to skip this.

Too Far Gone was also much too long. 473 pages could have easily been trimmed to about 350 without all the filler that was non-essential to the story line. I am growing so tired of authors who are doing this these days. Are they getting paid by the word, or what? The book itself was good enough, but it was boring in several spots where it was quite obvious, the author was using filler to increase volume.

Somehow, this book ended up in my holds at the library, and it had good reviews so I decided to give it a go. 400 pages later.....the writing was very amateur and the storyline was like a nesting doll with 5 or six sub stories going on. It was slightly suspenseful and I do like a good murder mystery, but this really fell flat.

A far-fetched tale about Sean and his son being kidnapped. Of course Lucy where she's in and Saves the Day and now they get what they've been wanting. Extremely predictable because you already know everything seems to fall into place for Sean and Lucy no matter what.

Okay

I didn't care much for this story. I don't think the author did much research on how police or th DIV operate. The book did have a few tense moments though.

CONFUSING

Two plots in one story is not good. I am tired of Lucy and Sean as the main characters. It's time for the other members of both families to be written about.
