Oblivious to the profound grief it has caused the Seeker, the cat continues to meander through time and space wherever its mood takes it. Occasionally evasive and consistently playful, it threatens to destroy what little control the sorcerers have over the realms, and unravel what the Seeker knew to be true of magic itself. Collects INKBLOT #7-12
This whole series is just yelling at the cat and asking what it is and why it exists but it keeps shifting focus to so many different characters that the cat is the only consistency, which is ironic since it's basically an agent of chaos.
This is not a good story at all. Basically only finishing in the hopes that everyone dies and the last page is just the cat saying "mow."
More dimension-hopping from our Voidcat and her(?) sometimes unwitting friends. The stories are rather disjointed, although the artwork and bizarre fantasy creatures (a triceratops-yeti! a Pegasus-goat!) are still very cool to look at.
Many of the characters are still mean to little Inkblot, which I dislike, although the main human character seems to be softening--but to me it still seems a bit too little, too late. And can Inkblot please be given a gender? Enough with the "it"'s already!
I...think I'm still enjoying this? I have no idea. I think maybe a re-read in collected format might be in order. It's all still very much one-and-done stories until the back half of this volume. I know the characters are all related, but it definitely feels too disjointed at this point, and while that was the charm of the first volume, it's certainly wearing a bit thin at this point. Nothing much else to say for now.
While I found the first volume very confusing and in desperate need of more story development, I was intrigued enough by the time traveling cat and awed by the artwork that I opted to try reading the follow-up volume. And…
I DNF’d it at page 58. It started on a good note and I had hopes that the story hiccups would be worked out. Only to have, a dozen or so pages in, the story get all muddled and confusing again. I hate to start 2025 with a DNF. But I would hate it more to start the year with a dud of a read.
Since there is not a third volume and the last line of the book appears to signal there was more to the story, I cannot help but wonder if I am not alone in finding the muddled mess in need of some development, editing, and growth and, thus, future volumes were shelved. Hmmmm?
** Did not include read date of January 2, 2025 as I do not want it counting toward my GR goal
The world revolves around 8 sibling sorcerers who rule various lands, and the petty ways they fight, essentially. On the whole they're all quite one-dimensional and annoying, including the protagonist, which is probably why the story switches so often to center on different people in the worlds that are being affected. The problem is I couldn't get into it and found myself not feeling invested in the world at all. The cat is what ties all these disparate stories together, allowing us to travel through time and space, but again, nothing is getting me to care about the cat or the people it interacts with. The cat does cute and aloof cat things! Oh and it opened a portal, what hijinks! I dunno, I'm a cat person and I like to read fantasy but I just couldn't get into this.
I would follow this voidcat anywhere. Including dimensions with warring giants and sorcerers. I love that the whole premise of this series is the chaos that follows this all-powerful creature of the void that can travel through space and time and dimensions, who is just a cat. It's just a regular cat doing regular cat stuff, completely unbothered by the rupturing of the worlds around it and the monsters and magic. We get a bit more backstory in this volume as to the origins of our sorcerer family, and certainly plenty of chaos. I'm definitely looking forward to another volume.
Rounding this up to a generous 3-star. At least it was a quick read that I finished in one sitting but that might just be because I skim-read most of it. I literally do not even know what to say about this because I’m so confused.
I gave the first volume a decent rating so I’m unsure where this went wrong. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this.
OK, I'm done with this series. Just not for me. Gone is the playful cuteness of the cat, and now we have other worlds being introduced with very little explanation. Characters that seem to be vital, but have very little context. This will definitely have an audience, but not me.
A continuation of this wonderful series about a cat that travels through time, but is still just a cat. Not an intelligent cat. Now a cat with human thoughts. A cat that acts like a cat and acts the way a cat does. The first issue had a bunch of plot threads that are starting to come together in this second volume.
A charming light fantasy series with excellent art.
Nicely produced fantasy comic series - but confusing.
The adventures of Mow, the cat from the Void, continue in this fantasy series. Each issue deals with different characters but some recur. It’s got lovely illustrations and it’s fun to read. It’s also confusing as it jumps around a bit too much for my liking. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This one felt a bit more disjointed than the first (I still don't know what happened in issue 7) and the art quality seemed to vary a bit more. The cat remained delightful and I still feel like there's a lot of potential here if the chaos was reigned in just a bit.
A fun little series with really cool ideas, but ultimately too many ideas at once I think. I enjoy the art too! Would read more to see where it goes but it looks like the series only made it a few issues past this volume.
