I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.
I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.
No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.
We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.
Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
Grab your weapon and ammo and hightail it to the nearest embarkation point. It all comes down to the final battle, and it’s a battle for humanity’s soul.
Now, I was already well aware that this series consisted of more than just 3,books when I started this volume. So I was more than just a little curious as to how it would all break out in the long run. Oddly, but not surprisingly, Craig Martelle, manages to bring this story to a full and complete stop, let everyone off the bus and then somehow manages to get us right back onboard the bus when we aren’t looking.
In all honesty, as little sense as that description may seem to make, it quite aptly fits my experience of reading this series. However, I can’t explain myself without ruining some of the joys of your own experience. I’m not going to that, however, rather, I’ll let you pick it up, discover the experience for yourself and, as always, RNJOY!
I've read all three books and it looks like more will follow. Overall a good series with a few areas where I just ship ahead at parts as I get a little impatient :-) The overall storyline centers on an advanced alien ship and its AI that are willing to help the human race overcome its enemies. There are twists and turns as our heroes aided by Leviathan fight many battles seeking to find an advanced alien race that is behind the scenes attempting to wipe out the human race by manipulating others to band against the humans. While book three has an ending / conclusion it still leaves room for more adventures in future books.
What an absolute roller-coaster of a ride this series has been.
This third book brought so much action I was left breathless at times, and the characters were all so well envisioned, it felt as though they were people I knew, no matter what race!
The journey to this point was such an amazing one, and I enjoyed every minute as I read these three books - to the point that I was dreading finishing it - but the end truly was worth it!
As I finished it, though, it's only because I know that I have another of the series on pre-order, that I felt happy - I'm really looking forward to seeing what Declan, Mary, and Leviathan, get to do next, in order to preserve peace for humanity's sake 😊
This was a really good sort of conclusion to the war. I like how he blends spaceship (naval) battles with ground insertion teams. You would think in a multi-ship battle that a ground type insertion team would lose any importance but he masterly makes the massive space battles become the support for the insertion team. Throughout all of the fighting the end goal never wavers from not destruction of the enemy but from peace by making the enemy your friend. The book ends with the idea that peace has come to the known galaxy and everything will be good from now on, Leviathan is no longer needed. Yet there are three more books to the series.
This review covers the whole trilogy. I see this as one story with an intriguing introduction of the first book bringing interesting humans who have only known interstellar war. A 1,000 year old ship with AI thats a pacifist, that brings the hope of peace. Book two carries us father into space and fighting for piece. Book three carries humanity to the verge of destruction or peace. A well written trilogy with great heroes, interesting bad guys and a well written support crew.
Major Declan Payne leads the best team in the War. Meeting Lev was a bonus. Now, he's travelling places in space he didn't know existed. And meeting with aliens to achieve his purpose; to end the War, not just win it.
Join the Major, Dog, Kal, the Cabrizi twins & the rest of the team as they work together to make a better Galaxy. You won't put it down until finish reading! Better yet, start at the beginning. A Fantastic Journey will be had by all. Except Virgil.
Mistakes: I really wasn't looking for any. The one I found I listed on Goodreads.
Plot: Everything came off as overly simplistic and easy.
Characters: The constant you aren't our enemy even though you have been killing us for generations got old fast. Humans would have destroyed the home worlds of any aliens who'd been doing that. Just look at our history with each other.
I initially thought this installment would bring resolution to the main story threads, and it does, but the battles are more intense and destructive than expected. I think I will continue to follow the series at least one more installment when it’s ready. The narrative has so far provided more positive moments than negative and while that’s not loud resounding acclaim, it will be sufficient to continue.
The Vestrall exist, and they have secrets. The war will continue because it suits them. Humanity must confront the real enemy. They must win or the war will continue for another thousand years. There’s only one ship that can do what needs to be done. Leviathan goes on the offensive, traveling deep into Vestrall space to find them and eliminate their ability to make war. An attack the likes of which the galaxy has never seen. One last battle to determine humanity’s fate. I really liked book.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I’m giving it a five star rating. Great characters plenty of action humor, and heart. There’s really nothing that I can say wrong about this book or the series excellent read it you will enjoy it. I think this series will surpass judge jury and executioner for me as most favorite.
and book 3 is done - the best series I've read in 2022 - well actually the only series I've read so far in 2022, it now just being Jan 4. But more seriously on of the most enjoyable series I ever read. The only problem being book 4 is not due for six more months. Time to practice patience I guess.
I really like Craig Martelle’s writing. I just couldn’t get into these books. Too much “we are just going to do this by ourselves bypassing all the bad guys etc.” It may be that I wasn’t able to really follow the banter well enough to really immerse myself in the story.
How am I going to go on without Lev, Declan and the rest? The story just grabs you by the throat from page one. The daring, the action and the heart to bring peace to humanity, it takes special, committed people. This is their story, and its excellent.
A fantastic end to a truly awesome trilogy. Lots of action with fantastic settings. The characters we have come to enjoy keep the action rolling and continues to leave the reader sleep deprived.
I have read many Sci Fi odyssey, this is definitely one to read. It has it all, adventure that's realistic, technology of a different type, drama to keep you on the edge of your chair as well as wanting to read the next book. Enjoy
Follow along as a pacifist warship carrying a team of humans that are fighting for the freedom of an entire galaxy get into conflict after conflict and just keep going no matter the odds. With great characters and an interesting storyline it is a good series
As per the title Levi everlasting excellent story till it got to last few chapters started to go all Woke preaching human rights and equality rubbish somewhat spoiling ending
Suspense, action, technology, tactics, and characters you grow to love... What's not to like? Well edited, fast paced, a solid storyline and a great read - I hated to put it down! Best series since Metal Legion! We need more like this!
Leviathan is one of the greatest ships ever. I want one for myself. This book was able to keep me entertained and waiting more. Cannot wait for more. Book 4 has a lot to live up to.
Another great book in this series. It is full of continuous action and adventure. The characters continue to grow and mature into believable people. I really like this book and I highly recommend it.
This is part 3 of a series and it has been a great ride. The action is non-stop with scintillating patter to boot. I couldn't put the book down. Read it for yourself and enjoy!
Declan Payne, hero without a cape, ends the war of all wars in the universe......or did he. A good mix of adventure, fighting, and self awareness. True space opera series
Reads well enough, but more often than not the dialogue gets confusing as to who is talking. It's okay to be clear who said what during a conversation. The story is entertaining enough to keep reading.
I’m so very glad the tale is not over yet. These characters are of such magnitude in their character building that I’ve grown attached and care very much for their lives and their outcomes. Please keep “doing you” as a writer, Mr. Martelle. 👍👍🙏🏻😉
We see our team whirled form one place to another, continuing to fight for peace. The series could end here quite well, however, I’m very thankful there’s another book coming out.
