Abby Johnson thought she knew what mercy was when she ushered desperate women toward abortion as the director of a Planned Parenthood facility. She was wrong. It wasn't until she understood the blood on her hands that she personally experienced the power of God's fierce yet tender mercy to transform her life. But she never imagined what could happen once she allowed that very mercy to infiltrate her life and spill out into a hurting world.
In Fierce Mercy, Abby calls you to experience a transformation of your own. Against the backdrop of her first decade involved in the pro-life movement, Abby helps you discover God's unrestrained mercy at work in your own life and take steps toward becoming a channel of that life-changing mercy in the world around you. She shows you how to model God's mercy, freely offer mercy to those who seem undeserving, respond with mercy when others err or offend, and bear witness to God's unrestrained compassion so that others may know him.
This is Abby's challenge to you: dare to do what is hard, what is right, and what is good. And do all of it in love.
Abby Johnson’s life was changed on October 6, 2009. That was the day that she resigned from the largest abortion corporation in the nation…Planned Parenthood.
Abby worked and volunteered for Planned Parenthood for eight years. For the last year of her employment, Christ had been working on her heart. Although she didn’t understand why, Abby had begun to question her work and the motivations of the company she had dedicated herself to for eight years.
In September 2009, she saw something that forever changed her mind on the issue of abortion. Abby was asked to assist in an ultrasound guided abortion procedure. On the ultrasound screen she saw a 13 week baby in the womb fight for its life…only to lose the battle in the end.
Not knowing where to go, Abby turned to a local pro-life resource group, The Brazos Valley Coalition for Life. She explained the events that she had witnessed and swore that she would begin to advocate for life in the womb, instead of destroying it. Even though she had not intended on being a public figure, God had different plans.
When Planned Parenthood found out about Abby’s change of heart, they were frightened that others would hear her story and then change their minds on abortion. Their defense was to silence her with a temporary gag order and eventually take her to court. They also decided to inform the media of their gag order.
The media were very interested in Abby’s story. A local news affiliate ran the story on the 10pm news…by Monday morning she was receiving calls from Mike Huckabee and Bill O’Reilly. On November 10, 2009, Planned Parenthood faced off with Abby in the courtroom. It was easy for the judge to see that the lawsuit was a sham. After an hour of testimony from Planned Parenthood, the judge dismissed the case on the spot.
On November 11th, Abby appeared on the O’Reilly Factor. Since her departure from Planned Parenthood, Abby has been traveling the country sharing her story and motivating others to continue the pro-life fight. She also works on projects for the national 40 Days for Life team. Abby lives in Texas with her husband and daughter.
I highly recommend everyone, especially pro-lifers read this book. Being on the sidelines of the movement for a few years, I’ve noticed so many lacking mercy and compassion for the post-abortive and abortion workers. Admittedly, it’s a difficult thing to overcome especially when one is so committed to saving the unborn. But if you are a Christian, you have to remember that “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23 NKJV Abby is a powerhouse of a woman, wife, mother, friend and champion in the ministry.
"And Then There Were None" is the name of a non-profit ministry that reaches out to women who work in the abortion industry and who want to get out but need jobs and financial help to do so.
In this book Abby Johnson boldly calls out pro-life supporters to show fierce mercy to abortion industry workers and also to those who have had abortions, something that at times is greatly missing from the pro-life ministry.
And in case you are wondering, this is not an over judgmental, big finger pointing book aimed at the pro-life movement, it's more like a transparently honest, inspirational challenge to experience God's deepest grace and mercy thereby being better able to share that same mercy back to those who most need it.
I've read Unplanned and If These Walls Could Talk by: Abby Johnson, so I was interested in reading Fierce Mercy when I saw she had released a new book! It did not disappoint. Abby fills us in with what has been going on in her life since her book, Unplanned, ended. Along with fighting for life, having beautiful babies, and doing conferences, she has become very passionate about her ministry, which is And Then There Were None, which helps abortion workers leave! AATWN also has retreats to help the workers heal from all the trauma they were part of, and all the trauma they incurred. Infused throughout the book is Bible references and faith. Abby talks about how God as mercy on us, and we should have mercy on each other. Whether the "victim or the victimizer", God loves us all. No matter where you come from, there is always room in the pro-life movement. The pro-life movement itself has a lot to work on as well, and Abby mentions these things in the book. I read this book in a day. Highly recommended!
What an eye opening and intriguing work! I love how mercy/gospel/love centered the approach of this work is. It does not excuse the actions of others, but calls us to bold, fierce love and mercy. The writing could be a little cringy at times, especially at the start, but over time it begins to feel like a great conversation with a remarkable woman. Highly recommended; just don't judge it before you finish the second or third chapter.
A powerful view of a woman being used by God to lead the fight to show mercy to the people who work in the abortion industry. They are not the enemy! Satan keeps the title. They are misguided and are starting to leave that path behind seeking to live a different choice.
The main thread of this book revolves around the "fierce mercy" that the author extends to those Planned Parenthood clinic workers who desire to leave the industry but need help in making that transition. She also experiences God's mercy and forgiveness for her own past involvement with managing an abortion clinic when she starts And Then There Were None (ATTWN), an organization that provides and umbrella of hope and support for women to start a new life outside of abortion work.
This was an eye-opening memoir by prolife activist Abby Johnson. It describes her life leading up to and including the creation of her ministry, And Then There Were None. This ministry assists abortion workers who want to change careers.
What a powerful book! Very hard subject matter - abortion - but a wonderful book walking through her story of how God helped her and His redemptive work I her life - I think I should have read her other book first - Unplanned- bit I'm going to read it second instead
amazing, challenging book. Abby Johnson meets you where you are and challenges you to become a better you. To live out the path God has set before you while granting yourself fierce mercy for the imperfect person we are her on earth.
