Star Trek: The Mirror War #1 - Let The Machinations Begin!

This was a great second chapter in this Mirror War story. It's the 2nd chapter because this story really begins in Star Trek: The Mirror War #0 and continues here. It's a very fast paced issue. There's a lot of action and a lot of back stabbing.

The artwork was great! It reminded me of the type of artwork that was used in the old Star Trek newspaper strips. It's very detailed artwork but there is a darkness to it. Now I don't know if that's because it's the Mirror Universe and the artwork having a slight edge or darkness to it is a way to visually separate this from the Prime Universe or if it's just the artists style.

I didn't recognize the artist's name who drew this comic because I'm unfamiliar with his work (his name is Gavin Smith and it looks like he may draw this whole series because he's also listed for The Mirror War #2). It definitely does differentiate the story in a good way. The writers are Scott and David Tipton and all I have left to say about them is 'nuff said! Trekkies really should give this story a try.

It's pretty fun so far. I'm not posting any spoilers but I think Deanna Troi might be being set up for a much larger role in this story (which is cool because her Mirror Universe version is wild and is called Inquisitor Troi) kind of like what they did with Hoshi Sato on Enterprise. In the last part of Enterprise's Mirror Universe story, Hosi gets control of the Defiant (the old Constitution-class Defiant) and brings her phasers to bear on the Imperial Palace and threatens to vaporize the Emperor unless he surrenders immediately. The Emperor does surrender and then Hoshi declares herself "Empress Sato".

I think that Scott and David Tipton might be doing something similar with Deanna Troi. I don't know for sure because the story has only just started. But she's maneuvering behind the scenes with Commander Riker and her one shot special that connects to the main story was the last special released after The Mirror War series had already concluded so I'm inclined to believe that maybe she becomes "Empress" at the end of this story? Like I said before, I have just started reading this story so there's 7 more issues of the main Mirror War series to go and 4 one shots as well and anything could happen within those 11 issues because it's the Mirror Universe.

Characters can die there because it's not the Prime Universe. I'm just throwing out some speculation about Troi possibly becoming "Empress Troi". This is my first time reading this story and so far it's a fun story. Can't wait to see how it turns out 🙂🖖!

My rating is harsh, but honestly, the more I read, the more I felt this was TNG for people who don't really like TNG.

If you think TNG needed more gore, more brash and reckless personalities, more sexual intrigue and backstabbing, well then this is the comic for you.

But for me, the best TNG episodes were those that made you both think and feel. Whether it's seeing an enemy or ally differently (The Defector and The Wounded respectively). Figuring out communication and cooperation (Darmok). A different perspective (Lower Decks). There's so many more great ones I could mention, but you get the idea.

By contrast, there's no real subtlety or thinking in this story at all. It's basically an action movie.

The art is good. The story is decent. But it just doesn't offer what I want from TNG.

The war ramps up

This issue ramps up the action and suspense. I enjoyed seeing the “Calypso,” the Captains Yacht that was never used on screen in TNG, but was part of blueprints and even made into a model by Eaglemoss before their untimely demise. You get to see O’Brien in this one, hopefully a hint that he’ll be more important as the story goes on. He was crucial to the novels set in this universe, though I doubt they’re considered canon with this story.
