The fate of an island hangs in the balance…
Mediterranean, 1942
The Second World War rages on. For two long years the people of Malta have endured the agony of bombing and the pangs of starvation. The beleaguered island cannot hold out for much longer and surrender seems inevitable if the population are to survive…
Lieutenant John Carbis joins HM submarine Urgent, part of the renowned flotilla of U-class submarines known as the ‘Fighting Tenth’. Skippered by Captain ‘Hammer’ Hawke, their mission is to defend the vital Allied supply convoys into Malta.
At 120 feet below the sea, Urgent is surrounded by lethal minefields, while Axis aircraft and destroyers hunt them on the surface…
As the battle arena shifts to the coast Sicily, Urgent must deal a lethal blow to an enemy supply train. It’s a dangerous operation and Urgent must remain undetected if the crew are to stand any chance of survival.
Can the crew of Urgent survive against overwhelming odds? Can the Fighting Tenth cut Rommel’s supply line?
And can this brave underwater strike force turn the tide of the war in the Mediterranean?
GO DEEP is a fast-paced novel whose author served as first lieutenant in the Tenth Submarine Flotilla, the most successful submarine squadron in the Mediterranean during World War Two.
‘Hyper-authentic British submarine novel’ – Kirkus Reviews
John Alan Wingate DSC was a successful novelist with some twenty-five books to his credit. Many of these had a naval theme. Frequently involving the submarine service, they gained much authenticity from Wingate’s personal wartime experiences
I found this book very tedious. You could delete one hundred pages and it would make a better read. There was maybe forty pages where I felt the excitement and fear of life in a submarine, the rest is endless lists of boats and subs that had me skipping a half dozen pages at a time.
Very good story with plenty of historical facts involved. These submariners are certainly the bravest of the brave. Once started to read it was difficult to put down.
A series that is well worth the time to read. War as it was and probably still is, not the romantic way it is sometimes written about, but cold and horrible and realistic.
Regrettably this book was tedious and disjointed. I struggled to get to the end. It has put me of Wingates not unsubstantial output for the time being.
Story line written kind of jumpy at times but episodes of depth charging convey the terror and hardship of enduring those attacks very well. Not Wingate's best work but a decent read.
I do like to read of naval encounters, this one however was a struggle to read. It contained way too much verbiage that did not add to the novel and had me skipping through pages.
Go Deep is an action-packed and exciting. The Main character who is John Carbis was filled with enthusiasm and is willing to do anything to get to his goal. Go Deep is mainly about John Carbis and his Navy crew during World War II, and how they deal with the things around them such as: Other countries Navy ships, and other boats. This book was entertaining and factual. In the first pages of the book it shows the different compartments of the submarine, which makes it better to imagine what it would actually look like. The details in the book couldn't be much better, it is very descriptive and detailed. The submarine is in European seas most of the book. Two other crew members are Hawke and Jimmy, both from The United States of America.
