Super U #3

Umbra's Return

Rate this book
Nova Carmichael

Ever since my father’s murder, the Carmichael and Birchwood Families have been bitter enemies living under the shadow of what Umbra did to us all. Every time I see him, it's like all those feelings return at once.

In a world where superheroes are integrated into society and trained to be the ultimate weapons, SUPE Universities are the final stop before joining the SUPE Force. While most of the future generation of heroes are upstanding citizens, doing their part in contributing to society, I’m getting kicked out of school for setting things on fire.

This is my final chance, so the last thing I should do is waste time on things like friends and love. Especially when it's a Birchwood that’s appealing in both categories. My mother always told me to beware the Birchwood family. They can’t be trusted, and they won’t protect anyone but their own. But as a dangerous threat puts one of us at risk, the person who’s supposed to be my sworn enemy becomes someone I'm terrified to lose.

Umbra's Return is an M/M, enemies-to-lovers, romance with a Genderfluid AMAB main character and an angry, possessive and protective ex-bestfriend who hates him. Their attraction rages hotter than a supernova, yet when chaos erupts, they might be the only people each of them can trust.

***There is some content which can be triggering for some folks, particularly the trans community, stemming from a cis character with little to no understand or respect for a persons gender identity and pronouns. Though this topic and event in the pages of the story is handled with grace, courage and support, the author felt it important to warn folks ahead. As a whole, this story is meant as a representation of and not the be all and end all when it comes to trans and non binary gender identities, feelings of dysphoria, etc. every gender identity and journey is personal. Always ask your trans and/or enby friends for clarification of their pronouns.

I knew this was going to be a good book since I enjoy Jamie Luther as an author. I didn’t expect this to elicit all the feels it did.

Nova was such a deeply sad man who didn’t know what to do with all of his feelings surrounding this fathers death. So he turned to anger like a child turns to his favorite blankie. He wrapped it around himself and zeroed in on Judson. He acted out against Jud every time he had the chance. Jud, for their part, doesn’t really understand why Nova hates them so much so they turns to anger as well. Watching these two circle one another was the best kind of foreplay.

Of course their chemistry comes calling and it’s a steamy explosion we get. These two have a lot to “work” out.

One of the absolute best aspects of this books was how Luther handled Judson’s gender fluidity. Addressing things like Jud’s pronouns on any given day, the clothes they were wearing, their own sense of dysphoria, and dealing with a transphobic acquaintance. Even addressing how Nova learned and evolved with Jud and Nova’s unwavering defense of Jud, even when he thought he hated them. It was absolutely wonderful and handled beautifully in this book.

All of the above and the fact that we had some super powers thrown in that led to some cool shows of power and I was all about this book. I highly recommend this one.

*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Umbra's Return is the third book in the Super U series by multiple authors. Umbra's Return is written by Jamie Luther. This book is about Judson and Nova. I really liked their story. This story is sexy, hot, full of feels, had some sweet moments and is very well written

It's an enemies-to-lovers superhero romance.

Umbra’s Return by Jamie Luther is the newest release in the new Super U Universe. Nova lost his father during a SuperHero/Villain battle when he was just a child. Due to his Mothers grief, he was forced to break all ties with his best friend, the one person who should have been there for him. Flash Forward 10 years later when, due to anger management issues Nova is on his 4th Super College in 4 years and his last option. Only Judson, the former best friend, is finishing his degree there. . As two try to figure out if they hate or love each other, that thin line that is walked often in romance books, they end up constantly in each other's circles. Nova is still working through the complex emotions that surface around the death of a parent. Sometimes emotions can be projected as anger onto things and people that are unrelated when it's not dealt with in a healthy way. I really enjoyed this story and how the two leads worked their way to figure out what they really mean to each other. The only issue I really had with this book honestly is the title. Umbra’s Return is a bit misleading as Umbra is only in the prologue. I assume that certain moments in the book are a preview of things to come in future releases.

I thought this was a good story.  I feel bad for Nova with how his mother handled his father’s death and pushed Nova to feel a certain way which made him a very angry person.  I felt bad for Judson losing his best friend and never really knowing why.  These two are explosive from the start but it takes a bit for them to get past their hurts and really see what they can have together.  I think their full acceptance of each other was a quick turn around. They didn’t really build up to it properly, it was enemies to suddenly everything was fine.

I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review

Fantastic!! Umbra’s Return is the latest in the Super U universe. Nova and Judson were once friends, now they’re enemies? The anger and hate feel so realistic. Their chemistry is so freakin explosive. There are lots of emotions and sweet feels. Overall the story was really well written with realistic, complex characters, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My review is solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

I am really enjoying this series, but this book is special. I loved Nova and Jud and their friends to enemies to lovers journey. Everyone in this book has been damaged in some way by people in their past. Some learn to understand, process and grow and some remain bitter and stunted. A book to make you think about your own baggage and what it might be healthful to leave behind.

Wow. I knew this book would be explosive, but I seriously wasn’t prepared for the chemistry when it did ignite! The anger and hate that Nova feels is palpable. As for Judson their character is written beautifully. I love how clear Jamie was when he wrote about Judson’s pronouns. The fluidity of Judson was well defined. This book was so good.

Enemies to lovers is a trope that you have to be careful with - sometimes the balance is never really found but Jamie Luther has done a wonderful job of doing just that. Judson and Nova are a perfect fit and I love watching them heal together. (And the heat is off the charts!) This series is also really fun to read - great book!

I liked the first half of the book. The second half just went down the drain. The resolutions came too quickly, the action plot point was random at best, and it all felt like a too quick wrap up just to finish the story. The first half was really good though.

I loved this book. Ever since Nova Carmichael's father was murdered at a young age the Carmichael and Birchwood Families have been enemies because of the villain Umbra. . In a world where superheroes have been integrated into society and are trained as weapons. Nova has been kicked out of a few SUPE Universities. He is on his final chance. One problem Judson Birchwood is at this university. Will this be the end of Nova's dreams of becoming a hero or will they both find love with each other ending umbra's curse?
