The book features Kim Merithew, a son of a wealthy man with a "gift" which he calls the buzzer. The buzzer Kim refers to is similar to women't intuition, or the ability to see something is wrong with a situation. I thought this would be a straight mystery but it's more like- international intrigue. There is a mystery, a man who is called The Wall- is sending out information (beneficial) to warn various countries of a planned attack or assassination. Is he doing this for good? Who is helping him?
At the beginning of this story, things are humming along, but after the middle things slow down a LOT and I found it more drudgery to read through some of the "discussions" about reality etc... Finally at the end there was some pick up for the big show down.
One interesting quote from the book stood out. The year I'm writing this review is 2020 and we are in the middle of a pandemic. This book was written 1930,1. Page 139. Kim is visiting a town that he suspects may have been victim to a new poison.
The proximity of Engis of certain factories for the manufacture of zinc became a matter for medical discussion. Chemical fumes from these might have hung low in the recently prevailing fog. But the medical "convention" which had swiftly convened at Engis shook its head collectively at the end of the second day and declared officially that the epidemic appeared to be "one of periodically recurrent waves of influenza, the disease (of the exact nature of which there was still much to be learned) apparently having the malignant characteristics of the pandemic of 1918, with some additional symptoms of the hitherto unknown character.
A number of other items in this story refer to historical events as well. Would be interesting to look into Chalmers other books, and see if there are any straight mysteries by him.
