Excellent overview of the Hong Kong cinema.
From its beginnings pre-WWII to its decline- and near extinction-Marvin Montes details the different sub-genres constituting HK cinema: wu xia pian, kung fu pian- and its own sub-genre, the kung fu comedy- heroic bloodshed... and their most representative directors/actors: John Woo, Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam, Ronny Yu, Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen...
It is a perfect introduction to the genre for newcomers or a warming memory for aficionados in withdrawal for a few years already. With a clear and pleasant style Montes shows his love for the genre. If you share this love this book is for you.
