Eleven year old Frank, son of Frank, has just inherited £462,000 from a step-grandmother he never knew. Her will says that the money needs to be spent to look after Frank Senior Senior, the grandfather Frank has also never heard of.
So in the course of one conversation, our Frank has more money to spend than he ever imagined possible and a brand new grandpa. Frank comes up with an ingenious plan to spend the money in style while also getting to know his brand new relative.
What I wasn’t expecting was to also feel so sad for most of the book. Kid Frank’s parents leave a lot to be desired; I wondered on a number of occasions if Matilda Wormwood was available to mete out her unique brand of justice. Grandpa Frank’s falling out with his son and its impacts made me want to cry. I also dreaded the end, not wanting to read what I suspected would happen. It wasn’t the light hearted, fun book I’d hoped for and because of that I almost stopped reading it several times.
I’m an outlier here. Most of the reviews I’ve read so far have given this book five stars and haven’t even mentioned the sadness I encountered hanging out with this dysfunctional family. I’d encourage you to read some of those before deciding if this is the book for you or not. Maybe I’m overthinking it but I wanted kid Frank to spend at least some of that money on some family therapy.

This is the story of our Bucket List and the things I’ve learned along the way. Like old people are actually quite buoyant when dunked in water and true happiness doesn’t come with a price tag.Although you may not think of hot air balloons as “wicker floating deathtraps” yet, you will after reading this book. There are some close encounters with ponds and you’ll gain new perspective on swimming with dolphins, as well as some other grandpa approved activities. There’s a bit of a Murphy’s law vibe to everything the youngest and eldest Frank attempt and that brings the humour I was expecting.

A ton of money, a grandfather, a bucket list, and oodles of fun! This one was just a delight!
In this book we meet a boy named Frank and he has just inherited not just 462k but also a grandpa he didn’t know he had! And so starts a hilarious adventure featuring a bucket list, a mission to make grandpa happy, and more! There are hot balloon flights with gusts of wind and signs collapsing, there is a swim-session with dolphins.. but it may not be what you think it is, and there is more. Along with the bucket list we see how Frank and his grandpa are getting closer and, despite what grandpa says, having fun doing things together with the money left behind by Frank’s stepgrandmother. I just loved how Frank first started with things he wanted to do, but quickly went with things that he thought his grandpa would also enjoy! I also loved how each bucket list item brought something unexpected along. It made me laugh oh so many times!
Oh, and I loved that Frank didn’t just go for helping his grandpa (and connecting with him), he also did things for the retirement home. Much to the enjoyment and happiness of the elderly there!
Oh, and another oh, because while we see Frank cares a lot about the reward he may get when he makes his grandpa happy/takes good care of him, eventually you see him not think about it that often and more think of fun things to do with his grandfather.
I also loved meeting other people in the lives of these characters. Like the couple who have a dog rescue/grooming/hairdresser for humans job. Or the balloon guy. Or the peeps living in the retirement home. Sometimes it is just a small glimpse, but that was enough for me to make me happy!
It was also really sweet to see Frank and his grandpa Frank connect and get closer. Especially later when things happen that made Frank junior unhappy, grandpa Frank is there for him.
I was saddened because we can see that grandpa Frank has Alzheimer/dementia, at least starting to. There are times that he just forgets where he is, what he is doing, who that boy is that is with him, that he confuses his grandson with his son. It just made me sad, especially since Frank finally has found his grandfather and is really bonding/connecting.
There is just one reason why I didn’t rate it 5 stars, and that was the parents. They were horrible. Terrible. And I just didn’t like them. Dad was constantly doing stupid crap which had him moving his family around a lot to get away from bad things. Dad didn’t seem to understand that maybe he should just find an honest job. Mom should just choose for once, I mean, for real, if my hubby was like this all the time? I would just say bye eventually. And maybe both of them should just care a bit more about their kid. I mean we find out later that it has been a long time since he has had affection/a real hug. But the biggest one? That they couldn’t leave their son alone when he had money and how they kept trying to find a way to get the money away from him. WTF. This is your kid’s money, given by a step-grandmother he didn’t know, to take care of someone you haven’t seen in years, aka grandpa. BAH.
The ending was fun, but also felt a bit contrived with how over the top it felt, like the whole book was a bit over the top, but this was just a level more. I was still happy with it because it did solve problems and had people finally doing that big talk that they should have done for a while. And then the last pages made me smile, so it wasn’t all that bad.
The illustrations by David O’Connell were, as expected, very fun and made the story even more bonkers at times!
All in all, I had fun with this one! Happy I bought it and happy I finally could read it in my vacation (August, whoo). I would recommend it.

Da ich von „Die unglaubliche Wunderreise des Freddie Yates“ hellauf begeistert war, stand für mich sofort fest, dass ich auch den neuen Kinderroman von Jenny Pearson unbedingt lesen möchte. Auf „Frankie und die Liste der unbezahlbaren Wünsche“ war ich tierisch gespannt!
Der 11-jährige Frankie Davenport, der nach seinem Vater und dessen Vater benannt ist, hat einen Dad, der sich mit seinen Aktionen ständig in Schwierigkeiten bring anstatt sich einen vernünftigen Job zu suchen; er hat eine Mum, die in einem Supermarkt arbeitet und er hat eine Großmutter und einen Großvater. Was letzteres angeht, wird sich allerdings eines Tages herausstellen, dass er die ganze Zeit falsch gedacht hat. Frankie hat einen zweiten Opa – Grandpa Frank – und dieser wohnt sogar gar weit entfernt in einem Seniorenheim. Und nicht nur das: Frankie hatte auch eine Stiefoma – eine Stiefoma, die ihm ein Vermögen vererbt hat. 462.000 Pfund, wie cool ist das denn? Doch dann erfährt Frankie, dass er das Geld nicht für sich ausgeben darf, sondern dafür verwenden soll, Grandpa Frank ein schönes Leben zu machen. Es stellt sich nur schnell heraus, dass sein Opa ein totaler Griesgram ist und kein Interesse daran zu haben scheint, seinen Enkel kennenzulernen. Davon lässt sich Frankie aber nicht abschrecken. Er erstellt eine Bucket-List mit lauter genialen Dingen, die er mit seinem Opa erleben möchte und von denen er der festen Überzeugung ist, dass sie Grandpa Frank glücklich machen. Eine Fahrt in einem Heißluftballon zum Beispiel, oder ein Parkour-Kurs und Schwimmen mit Delfinen. Je mehr Zeit die beiden miteinander verbringen, desto näher kommen sie sich. Ob wohl auch der letzte (und kniffligste) Wunsch auf der Liste in Erfüllung gehen wird?
Dies ist mal wieder so ein Buch, bei dem mein Eindruck ist, dass es bisher leider viel zu unbekannt ist. Zumindest hier bei uns in Deutschland sind die Titel von Jenny Pearson meinem Empfinden nach noch echte Geheimtipps. Finde ich richtig schade. Also solltet ihr gerne Kinderromane lesen, die superwitzig und herzerwärmend zugleich sind und sensible Themen aufgreifen, kann ich euch die Bücher von der englischen Autorin Jenny Pearson wirklich nur ans Herz legen! Mir sind inzwischen zwei ihrer Werke bekannt und beide waren echte Highlights für mich. Ich mochte ja bereits „Die unglaubliche Wunderreise des Freddie Yates“ unheimlich gerne, aber „Frankie und die Liste der unbezahlbaren Wünsche“ hat mir persönlich sogar noch einen Tick besser gefallen.
In meinen Augen ist Jenny Pearson die Balance zwischen Ernst und Komik erneut hervorragend geglückt. „Frankie und die Liste der unbezahlbaren Wünsche“ enthält eine wundervolle Mischung aus schräger Gute-Laune-Story und bewegender Familiengeschichte und wird mit viel Wärme, Witz und Ehrlichkeit aus dem Blickwinkel eines Kindes erzählt. Ich habe das Grinsen oft gar nicht mehr aus dem Gesicht bekommen, weil ich viele Szenen so lustig fand, manche Stellen haben mich aber auch sehr berührt und mitfühlen lassen.
Auf eine kindgerechte Art und Weise werden uns so einige wertvolle Themen und Botschaften nähergebracht wie die Bedeutung von Familie und generationsübergreifender Freundschaft, das Finden von wahrem Glück, Demenz, Zusammenhalt, familiäre Probleme und Vergebung. Die Geschichte führt uns vor Augen, wie wichtig Kommunikation untereinander ist und dass man Missverständnisse und Konflikte leicht vermeiden kann, wenn man einfach miteinander spricht und sich die Wahrheit sagt. Es zeigt uns zudem, dass Kinder oft viel klüger sind als Erwachsene und mehr vollbringen können als wir Großen.

Seine Eltern streiten sich ständig und da das Verhältnis zwischen Frank Senior und Frank Senior Senior kein gutes ist, wusste Frankie gar nicht, dass er einen zweiten Opa hat – und dieser sogar ganz in der Nähe in einem Seniorenheim lebt. Es wird sich noch was ändern, zum Positiven versteht sich, aber bis dahin dürfen wir gemeinsam mit Frankie und den weiteren Charakteren ein äußerst turbulentes Abenteuer erleben bei dem unter anderen wilde Heißluftballonfahrten, ungeplante Tauchgänge in einem Ententeich, ein Synchronschwimm-Kurs und ein paar Ganoven wichtige Rollen spielen werden.
Ich kann euch versprechen: Langeweile kommt zwischen diesen Buchdeckeln garantiert nicht auf. Mich jedenfalls haben die Geschehnisse durchweg mitgerissen und bestens unterhalten, sodass ich aus dem Mitfiebern und Schmunzeln stellenweise gar nicht mehr herausgekommen bin und das Buch innerhalb kurzer Zeit verschlungen habe. Es liest sich zudem auch richtig gut und flott. Der locker-leichte Schreibstil und die kurzen Kapiteln lassen einen nur so durch die Seiten fliegen und da ständig etwas neues Aufregendes und Überraschendes passiert und die Kapitelüberschriften noch zusätzlich neugierig auf den weiteren Handlungsfortgang machen, mag man aus dem Buch wirklich gar nicht mehr auftauchen.
Neben der Geschichte hat mich Jenny Pearson auch mit den liebevoll ausgearbeiteten und teils etwas skurrilen Figuren überzeugen können. Frankie war mir auf Anhieb sympathisch. Er ist liebenswert, clever und authentisch und wird sich im Verlauf der Erzählung großartig weiterentwickeln. Ich habe unseren Hauptprotagonisten im Nu fest in mein Herz geschlossen und fand es total schön zu sehen, wie er alles daran setzt, um seinen neugewonnenen Opa glücklich zu machen und wie Großvater und Enkel sich während ihrer gemeinsamen Erlebnisse immer näherkommen.
Grandpa Frank war ganz klar mein persönlicher Star in diesem Buch. Er ist zwar ein echter Miesepeter, hat das Herz aber definitiv am rechten Fleck. Ich mochte ihn wirklich vom ersten Moment an und habe mich über seine grummelige und unvergleichliche Art an vielen Stellen prächtig amüsiert.
Das Ende hat mir ebenfalls sehr gut gefallen. Es schließt die Geschichte gelungen und stimmig ab, sodass man das Buch glücklich und zufrieden wieder zuklappen kann.

Fazit: Ein wunderbarer Lesespaß voller Herz, Humor und Spannung und mit vielen herrlichen Verrücktheiten!
„Frankie und die Liste der unbezahlbaren Wünsche“ von Jenny Pearson ist so ein Buch, bei welchem ich sehr hoffe, dass es eine große Leserschaft erhalten wird. Es erzählt einfach so eine tolle Story über Familie und Glück und bietet nicht nur Kindern ab 10 Jahren die allerbeste Leseunterhaltung, sondern auch Erwachsenen. Es ist urkomisch und ziemlich abgedreht, gleichzeitig ist es aber auch sehr warmherzig und berührend und genau richtig ernst und tiefgründig. Ich habe Frankie und seinen einmaligen Grandpa nur zu gerne auf ihren verrückten Abenteuern begleitet und musste mich für meinen Geschmack viel zu schnell wieder von ihnen verabschieden. Von mir gibt es 5 von 5 Sternen!

Малкия Франк получава наследство от доведената си баба от 462 000 паунда и задачата да се грижи за дядо си Франк, който се намира в старчески дом. Родителите му, разбира се изпадат в шок, то той е все пак само 11 годишен, но определено ще остават изненадани.
Като цяло не смятам да разказвам какво се случва, ще оставя това на вас.
А историята е изключително трогателна и се редува с комични моменти. Много се радвам, че я прочетох, че проследих главно връзката между дядо и внуче и приключението, което предприеха заедно. Историята ми стана много скъпа, тъй като аз също имах по-раз��ични, наши си взаимоотношения с моя дядо. Авторката ни дава пример с тази книга, как трябва да се отнасяме към възрастните хора, особенно когато се борят с болест в която си губят и връщат паметта за кратко, как може да направим нещо малко за тях и макар да са на възраст, те не спират да живеят, не са по-малко живи същества от по-младите.
Също така се разгръща и взаимоотношенията към цялото семейство на дядо Франк. Франк младши, намира в дядо си един прекрасен и страхотен приятел, но баща му не е на същото мнение. Те не си говорят от години и така й не става ясно защо, но когато сина му се оказва в много опасна ситуация, дядо Франк без да се замисли и без да отдава значение на годините си, веднага тръгна да помогне на сина си. I had to read this book as my Dad is a Grandpa Frank & it did not disappoint! I will be buying paper copies for various relatives who I’m sure will share my amusement.
My husband kept poking his head through to see what I was doing as I was chortling so much at what can be best described as ‘situational comedy.’ This is will be a perfect read from about age 8 upwards. I’ve been recommending it to various students all day, helped by the fact that we were talking about funny books in book club today. Jenny’s writing style is reminiscent of David Walliams but without any meanness (I’m still sulking about his portrayal of Librarians in The Blob)
The book is about a boy called Frank (Jr) who inherits £462,000 from a step-grandmother he didn’t know existed. His Dad, Frank (Sr) is estranged from the old man and therefore Frank has never met his Grandpa who lives a short way away in a Home. Frank’s parents are adamant that there has been a mistake and the money should go to them, but young Frank is determined to keep his inheritance and to take his late Grandma’s last wishes to “look after” her husband very seriously.
After meeting his Grandpa, who is clearly sad about his loss, and a quick Google about ‘how to look after an old person’ young Frank decides to create a Bucket List of fun things for his Grandpa to do before he dies. This is where the adventure begins and the two embark on increasingly unlikely activities (hot air ballooning, swimming with ‘dolphins’) with the proviso that Frank will buy his Grandpa a place in Spain at the end.
There is also plot happening around young Frank’s parents, his Dad has a reputation for ‘wheeling & dealing’ which leads to a monetary crisis.
This is definitely recommended, a great book to banish the Winter blues!

This is the funniest, most joyful book that I’ve read in ages! Not only is it laugh-out-loud funny, but also full of heart. There are incredibly funny moments that are woven with the messiness of families and old age. It would be a perfect read aloud for Years 4-6.

Incontournable Roman Juin 2024
Je l'attendais de pied ferme ce roman, parce qu'une couverture qui laisse présager un grand-papa en maillot rose avec son petit-fils sur les épaules, c'est, un mot: Incontournable. Restait à voir si ce roman avait un contenu intéressant et je dirais que c'est le genre de récit déjanté un peu fou-brac qui parvient néanmoins à traiter de dimensions sociales pertinentes.
Frank John Davenport, dont le prénom se porte de père en fils, voit son quotidien solitaire changer le jour où sa grand-maman paternelle, Nora, lui lègue près de 460 000 livres sterling, avec la très précise mission de prendre soin de son grand-père. Résultat d'un imbroglio ou réelle intention pour le moins culottée, on ne saura jamais, car la lettre adressé à Frank John Davenport n'est pas sans ambiguïté quand à savoir à quel Frank elle s'adressait. Pour son père, un charlantan toujours fourré dans quelque plan malhonnête impliquant la vente, il s'agit d'une regrettable erreur. Il va s'évertuer à lui demander de prendre cet argent, chose que la maman de Franck semble pour une fois d'accord avec son andouille de mari. Seulement, Frank deux fois junior est bien décidé à mener à bien cette mission et il est plus qu'heureux se découvrir un grand-papa. Et puis, avec une récompense à la clé, difficile de ne pas se sentir motivé. C'est ainsi que notre jeune presquado de 11 ans se voit confier un demi-million de livres et qu'il franchit les portes de la résidence des Feuilles d'automne avec la ferme intention de faire vivre à son papi une fin de vie haute en couleurs.
Ce roman m'évoque le beau film de "Maintenant ou jamais" ( The Buckelist ), dans lequel deux hommes d'âges murs et condamnés par une maladie décident de faire une liste de tout ce qu'ils aimeraient expérimenter avant de mourir, l'un des deux hommes étant absurdement riche.
J'ai vraiment trouvé la narration entrainante et comique d'emblée, avec le grain d'humour si propre aux anglais de faire dans le rocambolesque et dans les personnages adultes parfois fort grotesques. Déjà, Frank nous dépeint une famille dysfonctionnelle, avec une maman découragé de devoir gérer deux enfants: son mari et son fils de 11 ans. Frank James Davenport, au-delà du ridicule romanesque, est dans le fond un parent irresponsable, incapable de jugement critique, toujours à chercher des façons malhonnêtes et roublardes de faire de l'argent, tel le type de vendeur que tout le monde déteste. Il fait passer ses besoins avant celui des membres de sa famille et globalement, manque beaucoup de maturité. Il en est vraiment devenu pathétique illustre combien certains adultes ne semblent jamais devenir adultes. La maman de Frank est quand à elle plutôt superficielle, mais au moins elle travaille. Les deux parents deviennent de véritables héritiers affamés cherchant à tout prix à prendre une somme qui ne leur appartient pas, mais dont ils estiment être les véritables dépositaires. Le plus triste dans tout ce bazar est le fait qu'à aucun moment ils ne semblent réaliser que c'est le grand-papa Frank qui aurait du en principe avoir cet argent. Toutefois, il y a sans doute eu chez Nora la réflexion que son mari en perte de capacité neurologiques n'était peut-être le plus apte à gérer cette somme.
Ça nous amène donc à la "Liste". Frank est un enfant qui se sent seul, on pourra le sentir dans le récit à plusieurs moments et l'occasion de rencontrer son papi est donc une opportinité d'avoir enfin un membre de sa famille qui se soucie de lui et qui sera présent. Du moins, c'est le souhait profond de Frank, car a priori, papi Frank n'est pas le plus accessible des hommes. Morose et malheureux depuis le décès de son épouse, Papi Frank semble ne plus savourer la vie et l'arrivé de son petit-fils jusque là inconnu ne semble pas vouloir le motiver à changer ce état de fait. Cela dit, comme on le verra, le jeune garçon a de grands projets bien audacieux pour apporter du peps dans la vie de son grand-papa. Promenade en montgolfière, concours canin, nage synchronisé, il y a de tout et peu à peu, le papi se déride. Il a plus de ressources qu'il ne le croit et ses capacités sont proprement trop incroyables pour être crédibles. Non, mais soyons réalistes, ce n'est pas un olympiens ce grand-papa et je ne calcule plus le nombre de fractures qu,'il se serait faite s'il était vraiment in aîné. Mais on pardonnera bien ce manque de réalisme dans la mesure où ça fait du bien de changer de paradigme concernant les ainés, trop souvent campés dans des rôles inertes, grabataires ou d'incapables.
C'est d'ailleurs un aspect que j'affectionne ici, ce dynamisme chez les aînés, certains très en forme, d'autres jeunes de coeur. Il faut dire que le jeune Frank ne s'est pas contenté de rendre la vie de son grand-papa plus divertissante, il a aussi changé celle des résidents des Feuilles D'Automne. Je pense que c'est là tout le charme de cette histoire, celle d'un membre de la jeune génération apporter de la modernité et du confort aux membres de la plus vieille génération. Frank a été réellement généreux et il aurait facilement pu combler ses propres caprices matériels avant de subvenir aux besoins de son grand-papa, mais il a préféré gâter un tas de personnes âgées. Il découvre ainsi une réelle leçon de vie, dans laquelle les choses importantes n'ont pas de prix et que le bonheur tient des liens que l'on noue avec autrui. Son dernier achat avec le demi-million va en ce sens.
La question du pardon est également présente, car les deux Frank, le papa et le grand-papa, sont en froid. On ne saura pas qu'est-ce qui fut à L,origine de ce froid, mais on sait qu'il a empêcher les deux hommes de se parler des années durant. Alors même qu'on lui demande de pardonner la bêtise et les décisions dommageables de son père, ce dernier refuse de faire de même avec le sien. Pour le jeune Frank, les adultes peuvent sembler bien contradictoires.
Mention spéciale aux nombreux pied-de-nez aux stéréotypes, tel que la capitaine de nage synchro, Florence, qui a un autre métier totalement impossible à deviner et un côté casse-cou endossé avec brio, ou encore le personnage de Stephen, apparemment le seul employé de la résidence, qui malgré un physique ingrat et un job qui peut l'être tout autant, est une soie avec ses résidents. Il y a aussi Bruce, le gars des Monstertrucks de petite taille avec des ongles manucurés et des sourcils impeccables, ainsi que Paul, le mari sensible de Janice, qui a une douceur fort attendrissante pour tout ce qui vit. Il y a des personnages décalés et rafraichissants dans ce roman, j'en sied gré à leur autrice.

C'est pétillant de malice, truffé de profils atypiques, le tout indéniablement tendre et même un peu crève-cœur par moment. Après tout, c'est tout-de-même l'histoire d'un enfant qui se sent seul et d'un grand-papa tout aussi seul qui a un début de démence ou d'Alzeihmer. La fin est cependant fort jolie et un peu américaine sur les bords, mais ça lui va bien et ne tombe pas non plus dans le sensationnalisme le plus absurde...même si voir un enfant de 11 ans avoir une carte sur laquelle il y a 460 000 livres est assurément absurde! Frank a mené sa mission à bien et j'ose croire que les adultes autour de lui en auront prit de la graine. Un roman qui donne également la tribune aux personnes du troisième âge, tout en traitant de l'importance des liens, qu'ils soient de sang ou non.
Pour un joyeux lectorat intermédiaire de 10-12 ans et plus!

Deshalb ist Frankie oft allein, seine Eltern kümmern sich um sich selbst und er hat keine Freunde. Doch eines Tages ändert sich alles, als ein Anwalt erscheint und mitteilt, dass Frank John Davenport von seiner Stief-Grossmutter 462’000 Pfund geerbt hat. Um das Geld zu erhalten, muss er sich jedoch um seinen Grossvater kümmern. Frankie versteht die Welt nicht mehr, den bisher wusste er nichts von seinen Grosseltern. Frank James Davenport, Frankies Vater ist sich sicher, dass es sich dabei um eine Verwechslung handelt und ihm das Geld zusteht. Der Anwalt versichert jedoch, dass alles seine Richtigkeit hat. Da sich in der Welt von Frankies Eltern alles ums Geld dreht, suchen sie einen Weg, um dieses zubekommen. Doch dabei haben sie die Rechnung ohne Frankie gemacht, der seinen Eltern das Geld auf keinen Fall abgeben will. Im Gegenteil, er beschliesst seinen Grossvater zu finden und sich um ihn zu kümmern. Bald findet er heraus, dass sein Grossvater in der Nähe in der Seniorenresidenz Herbstlaub wohnt. Da zurzeit Sommerferien sind, kann Frankie ihn sofort besuchen. Der erste Besuch gestaltet sich jedoch schwierig, denn Grossvater Frank will nicht von seinem Enkel und dessen Plänen wissen. Frankie lässt sich dadurch nicht abschrecken und schriebt eine Wunschliste, welche er mit seinem Grossvater abarbeiten will. So kommt es, dass Grossvater Frank und sein Enkel Frankie während der Sommerferien mit einem Heissluftballon fahren, einen Monstertruckfahrkurs besuchen und vieles mehr unternehmen. Dabei erleben sie viele manchmal nicht ungefährliche Abenteuer.
Eine zauberhafte Geschichte über einen Jungen, der das Leben seines Grossvaters lebenswerter gestalten möchte. Der Autorin ist es gelungen, ernste Themen wie Alter, Demenz und Tod in eine gefühlvolle Geschichte zu verpacken. Die Protagonisten, ihre Gefühle und Erlebnisse sind sehr detailliert beschrieben und lassen den Leser die Geschichte hautnahe miterleben. Frank sets off to meet his grandpa with high expectations. What he finds is a very sad and lonely old man living in a nursing home who has no interest in establishing any kind of relationship. Not wanting to give up on his chance for happiness (and because Davenport men don’t quit), Frank comes up with the idea of a bucket list of activities to inject some joy back into Grandpa Frank’s life, secretly harbouring hopes of a grand family reunion somewhere along the line. Soon, Grandpa Frank finds himself participating in a whole array of activities most OAPs wouldn’t be expected to do. As they venture together through: hot air ballooning; parkour; synchronised swimming and monster truck driving, Grandpa Frank learns that maybe there are more opportunities for joy (and bruises) in life.
Despite the blossoming relationship with his grandfather, it seems that Frank’s dream of a family reunion will never happen. This review can only be vague as I wouldn’t want to spoil this book for anyone reading it as it is available to buy from February 3rd.
We follow Frank Jr who inherits just under half a million pounds from the passing of his Step Grandmother he never really met.
His Dad Frank ( all males in this family are Frank so keep this in mind) is estranged from his Father after a disagreement years ago and they are both too stubborn to get over this; plus there is a health problem on the Grandfather’s side that also prevent this.
Frank Jr finds out his Grandfather is only a short distance away in a special nursing home and he wants to go and is taking his Grandmother’s last wishes seriously and wants to take care of him and give him a zest for life. This book takes you on an absolute journey. You learn before the money comes along that Frank Jr’s parents argue over his father’s crazy money making ideas that often lead to trouble even though they are funny to the reader. Frank Jr’s parents argue over everything including that giving this money to Frank is a mistake.
Frank Jr despite everything goes to his Grandfather and from here there are so many laugh out loud moments as they go through this bucket list that gives Grandpa Frank a new spark for life keeping him active and gives Frank Jr a chance to make precious memories as dementia holds the key in this story.

Another superb adventure from Jenny Pearson. Frank is facing the long summer holidays with nothing to do and no one to do it with. Having just moved house he hasn’t had a chance to make friends yet and his dysfunctional parents are too wrapped up in their own lives to take much notice of him.
When a lawyer arrives on the doorstep with the news that Frank’s step grandmother has died, leaving him almost half a million pounds and the instructions to look after his grandfather, Frank throws himself wholeheartedly into the challenge. His grandfather, however, is not quite so keen on Frank’s bucket list, but as they work their way through each hair brained idea, they both find themselves living their best lives.
This is a gorgeous story about family and sticking together through thick and thin. Although the family members have their differences, they come to realise that their relationships are the most important things of all.

Somehow this book manages to be touching and hilariously funny in equal measures, a balance that is often difficult to achieve in books geared towards children. It doesn't shy away from reality but instead looks at issues with a childs lense, something that this book does really well in showing. Children often have a simplified way of thinking that could help a lot of adults with their own problems.
I really enjoyed the characters in this story, they were certainly memorable and extremely vibrant in the characterisation. The character development we also see is something that was very endearing to read about.
It did take a while to get into the story, and although I am not sure that it is extremely fast paced, still had enough action to keep the reader engaged. I think I would recommend this one, and would love to have a look at a finished copy with all the illustrations.

What's it all about? This story of Frank, a young boy (I'll have to be quite explicit here as all the men in the family are called Frank!), and his relationship with his family (mum, dad and grandpa) is sweet, revealing and sad but shows great depth, humanity and a super learning curve for young readers. Suddenly, Frank is given loads of money by a deceased grandma he never new, a grandpa to look after and a dad whose in a lot of trouble from loan sharks of various kinds. The humour is deadpan, and I really like how it links together - jokes come back again and again. He decides to take his grandpa on lots of adventures, which always go a bit wrong - dragging an old lady into a hot air balloon and dunking her in a pond etc...The funniest bit for me comes at the beginning when grandpa wakes up to find his grandson eating biscuit of his tummy.

I have loved each of Jenny’s books so far and this book has not failed to live up to my expectations. It is funny, heartfelt, sad and hopeful all in one brilliant package that teaches us some valuable life lessons.
Frank takes his Grandpa on one crazy adventure to ensure that he lives his best life - in doing so he ensures the same for himself and the rest of his family.
Not afraid to look at the painful and tough parts of family life and growing old Jenny Pearson wraps it all up in moments so positive and funny that you can’t help but smile and laugh out loud.
This really is a touching book that builds empathy and understanding - a perfect to read aloud as well as on your own.
Definitely a book that needs to be on the shelves of all libraries and bedrooms.

While I’m allergic to writing New Years Resolutions, I must admit I am rather partial to a good list. My brain calms with the illusion of control. Plus crossing off items is so satisfying.
Frank John Davenport has created a bucket list full of chaos for his grandpa. The one he’s only just discovered exists, also named Frank. Life’s been a bit rough for Frank with a dodgy dad (Frank), newly tennis obsessed mum, and no mates. Still it’s nothing inheriting $462,000 can’t fix can it? Snappy chapter lengths and laughable (in a good way) illustrations. Hilarious, absurd while also managing to be poignant. A bucket full of brilliance!

I absolutely adored this book! Full of humour, empathy and encouraging how to choose the positive options! I loved the way it tackled situations that many children will find themselves facing. A joy to read and I will definitely be reading more books by Jenny Pearson.

I enjoyed this book. It was quite funny. Grandpa made a bucket list of lots of fun activities to do before he died. I liked that Grandpa was good at swimming and parkor, and some of the activities he was supposed to do didn't always go to plan. It made me laugh!

Really wonderful fun book for year 3-6, could be a great read aloud too for the younger end of that age group. Aging handled really sensitively too. Fans of David Walliams would enjoy this I think.

Als ich "Frankie und die Liste der unbezahlbaren Wünsche" in der Vorschau des Verlags entdeckt habe, ist das Buch sofort auf meiner Wunschliste gelandet. Die Geschichte klang toll, voller Humor und mit einer schönen Familienstory, auf die ich mich echt gefreut habe.
Frankie erbt von seiner ihm unbekannten Oma fast eine halbe Million Pfund - allerdings unter einer Bedingung. Mit dem Geld soll er sich um seinen Opa kümmern, den er ebenfalls bisher nicht kannte. Frankie hat den Plan, seinem Opa eine unvergessliche Zeit und ein Lächeln zu schenken. Er schreibt eine Bucket List mit ganz vielen Dingen, die er mit ihm gemeinsam erleben will. Eine Heißluftballon-Fahrt, Monster Truck fahren, mit Delfinen schwimmen.. all das ist dank des Geldes kein Problem. Doch wie schafft er es, dass sich sein Opa und sein Vater wieder vertragen?
Ich muss gestehen, dass ich das Buch am Anfang echt gewöhnungsbedürftig fand. Ich hatte eine schöne Familienstory erwartet, mit ein bisschen Streit, durch den Frankie bisher nichts von seinen Großeltern wusste. Das Einzige, um das es ging, war zu Beginn aber Geld. Frankies Eltern haben sich nur für das Erbe interessiert, Frankie hat sich nur für das Geld und die Belohnung, die er kriegen sollte, wenn er sich um seinen Großvater kümmert, interessiert. Frankies Vater steckt immer in Schwierigkeiten, Frankies Mutter kümmert sich auch nicht so wirklich um ihren Sohn. Von Humor und Wärme war keine Spur.
Je weiter ich im Buch kam, desto mehr verschoben sich Frankies Prioritäten und es entwickelte sich zu einer echt schönen Geschichte, bei der er mit seinem neu gewonnenen Großvater einige tolle Dinge erleben konnte. Endlich wurde es humorvoll, ich habe irgendwann die Wärme gespürt, fand es schön zu lesen. Überraschend wurde es auch noch richtig spannend, was mir sehr gefiel.

This is Jenny Pearson’s 3rd book, and I know this is a big statement but hear me out, I think it might be her best yet. It’s about a boy named Frank Davenport, named after his father and his father’s father, who ends up inheriting a huge sum of money to look after his estranged grandfather Frank Sr Sr, which he decides should be spent on a bucket list to help him “live his best life”. In typical Jenny Pearson fashion, absolute chaos ensues including many unplanned dips in a duck pond and being chased by a loan shark company, but also a really gorgeous, heartwarming relationship develops between Frank junior and Frank senior, and I think it’s that unlikely, intergenerational friendship that really makes this book shine. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s absolutely hilarious to the point I was audibly giggling, and there are so many jokes I had to read again because I just thought they were so funny, and the wry, witty writing style is just the best, especially as it’s written as Frank (junior) reflecting on all these events and how he should have done some things differently. That said, while the ending was heartwarming, it was also so bittersweet and one certain thing sucker punched me and made me cry, so just be warned it might do the same to you!!

Jenny Pearsons charakteristischer britischer Humor lässt einen auch in diesem Kinderbuch häufigst Grinsen und hier und da auch geräuschvoll kichern. Und doch bringt diese Geschichte auch deutliche Grollmomente mit sich, die gewaltig triggern, sich aber am Ende der Geschichte in Frieden und Genugtuung auflösen. So witzig das Buch auch ist, ernste und gefühlvolle Momente schleichen sich immer wieder dazwischen, so dass dieses Buch, nicht nur durch die vielen weisen und alltagstauglichen Kapitelüberschriften, eine angenehme Tiefe mit sich bringt. Ein Buch ganz ohne Längen, indem ordentlich die Post abgebt und doch ist es eine rührselige Opa-Enkel-Geschichte, in der es um das Wiederzusammenfinden einer Familie geht.

I really enjoyed this. As well as being very funny, it treated Alzheimer's in a sensitive and relatable way.
