The Secrets of Isoria is a YA fantasy that follows a girl called Orion Candor who finds out she is a sorcerer when she is sixteen years old. Thrusted into a world that Orion never knew existed, Orion must uncover the dark family secret and solve the mystery surrounding a family's member death. But Orion must be careful on who she trusts in this world. She must also learn how to use her magic and attend a elemental magic school to train her powers.

This book was absolutely phenomenal and was one of my favourite books of 2023. The amount of world building in this novel made you really feel like you were immersed into the world and was lovely to be able to get a feel for the culture and traditions set in the world. From the way they travelled to the way the magic school was described everything was described. You also felt a attachment for the characters in this book as you could really see their personalities. You could also see lots of different books woven together that I loved such as Shadowhunter, Narnia, Red Queen etc but this book had it own unique flair and had quite a unique magic system.

I honestly loved the morally grey character Alec with Orion. I honestly love the name Alec (mainly think this is because of Shadowhunter) and was really rooting for him and Orion to be together. My heart broke so many times for him and he became a character I could not get enough of. The scene where Orion slipped into the top floor of the hospital to see Alec volunteering and playing his guitar with a survivor of a uprising. It honestly made my heart swell because it was such a cute scene. The banter and the playfulness of their friendship before it started to blooms more than just friends had me on the edge of my seat as there was so much tension.

The plot twist at the end was something that I never would have guessed in a million years. I could not honestly believe it and I was left with a lot of trust issues because why did that have to happen? I honestly can not wait for book 2. Please check this book out as it is so underrated and deserves all the love.

Before I start off this review, I want to thank the author, Cristina Macari, for sending me a copy of her book for a honest review!

Okay, where do I even begin?! I was obsessed with the magic system in this book! It was so intriguing to me and of course I had to take the quiz that she provided...I got Aermage! The author also did a great job with the detail and description in scenes! On every page I felt like I could perfectly imagine how this world was, and how the characters looked! Also, can we take a second to talk about that cliffhanger?! I was not expecting that at all?! Also, that cliffhanger?! You best believe I am counting down the days till the second book comes out! This book was nearly impossible to put down! Will for sure make you stay up late into the night!

All in all, I highly recommend checking this book out! If you love an intriguing magic system, the enemies-to-lovers trope, and a main character to root for, Secrets of Isoria is the book for you!

I read a fair bit of fantasy, so I’m always pleasantly surprised when I read a fantasy book that I am instantly invested in AND it has a map included. This book was so personable I felt like I knew the characters and I was a part of this world.

And by the end of this book, I was ANGRY and tempted to throw it across the room. I can’t wait for the next one in the series!! READ THIS BOOK.

Secrets of Isoria is the first book in the Secrets of Isoria series and it is filled with elemental magic, magic academies, monsters and secrets.
This YA contemporary fantasy is a enemies to lovers with a hint of slow-burn romance and will have you wondering which elemental magic you have. Orion discovers she is a sorcerer and with this a new magical world opens to her, welcome to Isoria. She is faced with puzzles, learning control over her air magic and dealing with the grumpy Alec who introduces her to everything in this new world. Everything isn't all fun and games since there are lies, betrayal and deadly secrets around every corner.

With different schools catering to different elemental magic, Orion finds herself in Arayis School of Air Sorcery and the adventure begins when she is taught different spells. A new friendship develops between her and two other students and I enjoyed their banter. I was gripped from the first page to the last and couldn't put this book down. Macari has created a world where elemental magic feels just a snap of the fingers away, so much so that I'm trying to summon fire or earth.
I recommend this to fans of Zodiac Academy or anyone who enjoys YA fantasy.

- Morally grey character
- Elemental magic

- Lies, deception and secrets

First things first, I am sorry if this review is rude.
I decided to read this book because of people on bookstagram. They said, “if you like book XYZ, this book is so similar”. NO IT IS NOT. This book was terrible. The author kept jumping all over the place and the story line was just frustrating. And don’t even get me started on the ending. It was just crappy. It just stopped mid scene.
Do not recommend this book and will not be reading the next one.

Purchased Secrets of Isoria by Cristina Macari this Christmas for my grandchildren. Because of covid we had to postpone our Christmas exchange. I decided to pick up their book and just peruse. I found I wasn’t able to put it down. Just when I was ready to close the book another plot was developing and I was captivated once again. I cant believe this was the author’s first book, so well done. I hope this is the first of many.

I rated this book 3 stars. When reading my review take into account that I am 19 and I feel that the ideal audience for this book is kids 12-16. I think the premise of this book is fantastic- the secret hidden world full of sorcerers, the spy ring, the secrets the betrayal, her discovering it at 16 and having lots of power. But I think that too much stuff happened in this book. This book was so full of action and things were constantly happening that it was sometimes hard to keep up with and I wish things were more fleshed out and descriptive. Things just happened to fast I couldn’t keep up and there was no feeling of suspense. Orion was just thrust into a world of magic with lies and deceit everywhere and I wish those suspenseful moments would have been more played out. I wish more time was spent on the school and the spy aspect and also for Orion to actually learn and control her powers. Like I said too much happens and there wasn’t enough time to give everything the detail it deserved. I liked the main character and The side characters such as Banden and Julian but we barely know anything about them. There is never time in this book for Orion to also be with people and discover them- instead she’s just going from one action scene to another. The climax of this book fell flat for me because I just didn’t get enough time with the characters to connect with them or be surprised by the twist. I need to know more about Orion’s relationship with her mom, more about Banden, more about the friends and just everyone in general.

I know that paragraph seemed negative but I promise you this book has a super good premise and that is what kept me reading. I loved the magic and the idea behind Isoria in general. I think having 16 year old Orion discovering this world that has been hidden from her for her whole life was a great way to start this book. This way we get to discover things as Orion does. I like how Orion was especially gifted in air magic as I haven’t seen much of that in other books featuring elemental magic. I think the idea of Alec is fantastic and a great counter to Orion- I just wish we got to see more interaction with them at the beginning of the book and more actual scenes of them together.

For a debut book I think it’s a really good start to a series that has the potential to be great. I hope book 2 brings more insight to the world and relationships between characters and also grows on this idea of the Obsidian King as in this book he felt like more of a distant villain.

I had first heard about this book on the author's tiktok and I am so happy that I decided to pick it up. I absolutely love the setting of a magic/spy school that is focused on elemental magic. I loved the magic system that was set up and thought that the history of the world was so interesting. I loved all of the characters. Orion and Alec were my favorite because of the dynamic and tension between them. I loved all of the twists and turns that were in this novel. It made me keep reading and I just need to know what happens next.

I would like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions are my own.

This book follows 16 year old Orion who is being sent to live with a family friend while his mother is sent abroad for work. Orion arrives at her grandmother home and meets Banton who is was also very close to Orions grandmother. What Orion Discovers is a slew of family secrets including a place called Isoria where she is sent to be trained to become a sorcerer. Orion becomes friend with several students and learns not everything is as it seems and she's not even sure if she will survive.

This book is very well written with a very original magic system. The world building and character arcs are wonderful and I enjoyed reading them. I will say that this book is very YA even close to being middle grade which caught me off guard. I was expecting the book to be a bit more on the adult side. having said that, I would give this book to my nieces and nephews who would thoroughly enjoy the story. There are all kinds of twists and turns including a betrayal that I wasn't expecting. If you love close friendships, an academy setting and secrets, you will love this book. I give this story 4.5 stars but have rounded up.

Thank you to Cristina Macari for sending me a copy of your book!

This story is filled with twists and turns, confusing emotions, and betrayals. The relationships in this story have so many layers. Alec and Orion’s chemistry could not have anymore balance. Reading Secrets of Isoria is an unforgettable experience. I love the use of elemental magic and the descriptions were easily understandable. The conflict happening between the kingdom and the rebel group under Obsidian could have been further explored, but it seems like this will lead to a sequel and I’m sure my wish will be granted. Definitely check this out!

i thought this book was really good. the magic system was explained very well, orion is a very likable character and i love the whole idea of isoria being completely hidden from the “normal” world and not living among “nonmagus” and the cure coffee shop<3 i need an RNP…like yesterday. my issues with this book
1. orion never stops to think before doing anything
2. julian and rae really didn’t have personalities aside from julian being a flirt and rae liking fashion.
3. the banter was repetitive.
(also still wondering what’s up with celeste?)
other than that it was a really enjoyable book and i look foward to reading book two. :) thank you for sending me a copy cristina!

This book is not in my usual genre of books but with that being said this is the best book I have read in years. You have magic, romance, intrigue, and mystery all in this novel and just when you think you’ve figured it out there is a new twist. This book is fascinating!! I read it multiple times as there were things I missed each time. I can’t believe this is Ms. Macari’s first book. She writes like such a seasoned author and her story paralleles to the likes of J. K. Rowling. I’m looking forward to her next book!

Avatar meets House of Anubis meets Percy Jackson in this exciting new YA contemporary fantasy series by debut author Cristina Macari. I LOVE this book! I read it one sitting and need the next book immediately!

Our protagonist is sixteen-year-old Orion Candor who, at the start of the story, is sent to live with an estranged family friend in her late grandmother’s house. Orion has lived a pretty normal life up until this point… except for the occasional, strange powers she keeps hidden that she calls her “wavelengths.” They allow her to sometimes feel and manipulate the wind around her.

Instead of sending her to regular high school, her new guardian Banden whisks Orion to the magical island of Isoria. In this land hidden within our modern world, Orion learns that she comes from a long line of sorcerers. Here, she is introduced to the Isorian magic system based on the four elements: Air, Water, Earth, and Fire.

Incredible world-building

Isoria is a land of sorcerers, enchanters, kings, royal guards, and secret spy organizations. Cristina has put a lot of thought into this amazing new world, and it’s a truly immersive experience. Through Orion, we get to learn more about the history of Isoria and how magic plays a role in the life of sorcerers like herself. Students and teachers at Isoria Academy come from all around the world to learn and train. There are also other hidden schools – which I can’t wait to learn more about in future books.

I thought I had outgrown young adult books about magic schools, but by the end of Secrets of Isoria, I fully wanted to enroll in Isoria Academy. The elemental magic system is so cool! The way that the individual element affinities are divided, as well as how they’re used in battle as weapons. While the magic reminded me of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show I love, I especially liked the added aspect of choice. Sorcerers are initially trained in every element and are evaluated at the end of training with the Isorian Element Performance Evaluation (IEPE). The IEPE determines the elements for which a sorcerer shows greatest affinity. But ultimately, students choose the element they’d like to specialize in.

Spies and secrets

A huge part of what makes a good fantasy for me is well-written suspense, and this book absolutely delivers! The story is fast-paced, and there are so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming (like that last chapter! And that cliffhanger!)

While Orion’s magic training takes up a great deal of this book, the rest of her time is spent being initiated into MISTIC, a secret spy organization to which both Banden and her late grandmother Corinne belong. MISTIC seeks to protect Isoria by gathering intelligence against Isoria’s most feared sorcerer – Cyril Obsidian. The problem is that there is dissent (and potential traitors!) within the organization, and Orion isn’t sure who she can trust. It seems everyone has a different side to the story and a different reason for their actions. It’s hard to be sure who the bad guys are and who’s on her side. She has to rely on her instincts and the clues left behind by her grandmother to uncover secrets that could save Isoria.

“This world was a game, and I had to play not to win but to survive.”

–ORION, P. 195

Speaking of clues, the coded letters Orion and her friends discover in her grandmother’s house got me so excited! I was squealing when she accidentally opened the secret door. The scenes of her gang searching for clues in an old house and using portals to sneak into the library after hours for more leads – it all reminded me of the TV show House of Anubis. In the best way. By the end of this book, I feel like a lot of questions were answered, but now I also have so many more!

A sassy heroine

Orion narrates the story in first-person, and I loved being in her head. Her dry humor and hilarious remarks about the new world she’s been thrust into are super entertaining. She is a teenage heroine with extraordinary powers she still doesn’t know how to fully control. Her insecurities and fears for her loved ones often spill over into a sassy attitude, one that reminds me a lot of Percy Jackson’s. Here are some of my favorite Orion quotes:

“He was right. My ass was most likely going to get kicked.”

“You are not– dying– because– of a stupid– plant!”

“This was going to be harder than I thought. Flirting was not on my list of ‘know-hows.'”

“Had I been an experienced Aermage, I would have electrocuted him to ashes.”

Fiercely loyal, sarcastic, unsure of her place in the world – Orion is an adorably likable heroine whose journey I cannot wait to read more about.

"This world is a game of deception. Be sure you're playing."
Secrets of Isoria follows the main character Orion Candor as she discovers who she really is and why she always felt like an outsider in her own world. Through brilliant writing, the reader discovers this new world as Orion does, and frankly, can't expect the twists and surprises that come along the way.
The fantasy in this novel is breathtaking with the magic system and map. There were so many moments during the reading of this novel that I got chills, or I was excited, scared, nervous, happy, and completely mind-blown. I couldn't put this book down, because until the end, it was so hard to tell who the true allies were versus the true enemies. I love so many of the moments Orion had with her friends, the passion and zeal she felt to figure out her family's secret, and the growth Orion experienced.
"I hated how his touch warmed my body and the security I felt when he stayed close to me." By the end of this novel, this quote made me feel so many emotions.
One more thing I love about this book is what is found in the acknowledgments. The author stated she has had this story since she was a young teenager, and personally, I think that adds even more beauty and depth to this book (which is hopefully the first of many). And it is so refreshing to other aspiring authors that, one day, their story could be as amazing as this one.
I've rated Secrets of Isoria five stars because: it is a fantasy novel that can be read by anyone, it encompasses a majestic magic system that truly brings the story to life, it is fast-paced, and (for so many other reasons) it just absolutely deserves five stars.

The further I read, the better it got.

I loved the hints and how it all pieces together at the end. I also enjoyed trying to guess as I went. I was right with a lot, but I still didn’t see the twist coming. I knew something was off about that character and that he (Not Alec) had something to do with the war, but I didn’t think he’d do that to Orion. She distracts us from worrying over him pretty well.

The writing style is extremely descriptive and scenery focused at times. The books is often more focused on the scenery than the plot or characters. That’s the only thing I can critique. But since I can’t visualize (meaning I have aphantasia), long, detailed descriptions of everything generally aren’t for me. Someone who can see in their mind would love this book and imagining the world of Isoria.

Wonderful character development and interesting character dynamics. I think figuring Alec out was my favorite. He seems mean or standoffish but is really a softie when you get to know him. Not even all that happens towards the end changes that for me.

And the enemies to lovers trope in this book was so fun to follow along with. They’re in denial, and it’s just so obvious from a reader’s perspective. I was like omg just shut up and kiss already. The dialogue between them was wonderful. If you like banter and sarcasm, this book delivers on that!

One of my favs: “If your needs involve hurting yourself, then you’re correct. I don’t care about what you think you need.”

Also the garden scene. *swoon*

I was so frustrated with Alec at the end even though I understood why he was doing it. Still rooting for them as a couple though.

Seriously can’t wait for book two!

I actually ordered 2 copies because I was so excited for the release of this book! I found out about it through social media, the author had been making some awesome videos, I had it on my wishlist for some time!

I’ll start out by saying it definitely exceeded my expectations. As someone who buys a ton of books to read, then stops mid-way to read another…this one was a game changer. Once I started, I could NOT put this book down. I found myself itching to read more and more, especially when it came to the romantic storyline between two of the characters (no spoilers here, you’ll have to read to find out!). Every character had developed so well throughout the storyline, and each of them contributed to Orion’s story in their own way. I truly enjoyed the strong bond between all characters.

It’s always amazing to see how someone can create an entire universe out of pure imagination. The author did a fantastic job, and I can’t wait to read more of her work. Crossing my fingers for another book…there has to be more to the story!! This would also make a really cool movie, maybe this could be the next Harry Potter franchise?!

If you like YA novels, romance, and strong female characters, I highly recommend Secrets of Isoria !! Definitely read it for yourself, or gift this one to the book-worms in your life.

I have complicated feeling a for this book…. I did enjoy but it does have me feeling some type of way. For starters it felt way more YA than I was expecting it to be which isn’t a bad thing expect there were several times when it felt like the story itself didn’t want to be YA if that makes any sense?

Also I think in general there was just way too much going on in this book. At times it felt like I was reading 2 different books at the same time. All of the concepts just didn’t completely melt together for me. I LOVED all the concepts they just needed more work on merging together.

It just felt too rushed with. Finding out she is a sorcerer, getting involved with the spy agency, having to go to school to learn about her powers and the family mystery all happening at the same time and it was just overwhelming. I think each think needed to be more drawn out and focused on. There was enough stuff going on in here for two books or at the very least a longer book.

It just kind of felt like I was reading a first draft of a book that has a lot of potential. This is a debut novel to my knowledge so for that I give it grace and I am optimistic for the future of the series. I will be tuning in to see what’s next bc I am invested in all the storylines I just hope they find good cohesion moving forward

This is a YA fantasy book that is fast paced and action packed with a unique magic system. Our main character, 16 year old Orion, finds out that she is a sorcerer and is sent to an academy for sorcery. Along the way she discovers Isoria, a secret country for sorcerers, joins a spy ring, and tries to uncover the secrets of her family’s past.

Orion is a very likeable main character and I enjoyed learning about the world and magic with her. I really liked the side characters and I want to get to know them more in the second book! I love books set in an academic setting so I really enjoyed Orion attending the school for sorcery! The school in this book kind of reminded of Hogwarts but the students are divided into houses by what element they specialize in.

This entire book felt like a puzzle I was trying to solve and I loved it. The last few chapters of this book absolutely blew my mind, the ending was SO good and I did not see that coming AT ALL!

You would like this book if you like:
✨Academy for magic
✨Spy ring
✨Fast paced
✨Elemental magic system
✨Secrets & betrayal

This book is very fast paced so at times I was confused, but overall I enjoyed reading this book! I would say this book has a similar age rating to the Harry Potter series.

Magic in a secret world? Yes, please.

Loved this story. The characters were great, the plot awesome, I’m so happy to have stumbled across this book on social media.

This book starts off building the plot slowly and leaving subtle hints. Then it becomes faster-paced. I really enjoyed how quickly it moved along, all while telling a magnificent story.

I’m looking forward to reading where the story will go next. I’m loving the relationships forming in book one and can’t wait to see how the develop in the next book.

I love elemental magic and so the world was super intriguing to me. The last few chapters had me reading with my mouth open in shock.
