JAKE SAWYER is in limbo. Facing an internal enquiry into his capture of a vicious killer, he turns private detective, and takes the seemingly hopeless case of a teenage boy, missing for seven years.
When a young woman podcaster investigating the boy’s disappearance also goes missing, Sawyer is drawn into the secretive world of urban exploration. But then an adult male body is found, showing signs of extreme torture, and the murder reminds Sawyer of an unsolved case from his early career.
He connects the past with the present, uncovering a terrible link which could hold the key to the disappearances.
Out of therapy and tormented by trauma, Sawyer must hold himself together as his quest to find the missing boy and woman leads him to the lair of his most terrifying adversary.

Not for me anymore. Enjoyed the first few books in this series and wrote favorable reviews. This last book was depressing and repetitive and overlong. I forced myself to finish it and the ending was the end for me, I won’t be reading the next book.
Can't believe the cliffhanger! I only picked up this series a couple of weeks ago, now i need to wait until next summer to see what happens.
This was a bit darker (slightly creepy, which i liked!) in tone. I like the idea as Jake as a PI actually, think there could be some good side stories in that. Obviously that would need to wait until he gets out of his latest pickle!
Throughout the series so far, i've also like the ongoing feud between Dale, Fletcher and Jake. A bit tit for tat.
One thing i couldn't understand was the shop lifting, just seemed a bizarre thing for him to do. Maybe that was part of his risk taking needs.
Following on from events in the last book, Jake is on suspension and DCI Farrell is determined to make it permanent. In the meantime, Jake decides to take on an unpaid missing person investigation. At the same time, he is managing to keep track of a current investigation which seems to be similar to murders committed when Jake was a young detective.
This was another riveting read. Jake seems to be regressing and is becoming more self-destructive by the day. This is not an enjoyable thing to read but engrossing nonetheless. I'm disliking Farrell more by the minute and the ending sets things up perfectly for the next book which I can't wait to read.
A sparkling English mystery series, featuring Detective Inspector Jake Sawyer, this is number 5. Shaw is besieged by mental issues but takes on a private case to revisit an old case. The past collides with the present. Fast pace, great style, snappy dialogue, tricky plot, a fine case of characters ... read it in a night. Check out the other four in the series, they're all great.
This story doesn’t have too many patches of downtime. The author certainly puts Jake Sawyer through the wringer. I think he needs to be given a break. Intriguing and twisting plot. Great characters. Good writing. All the ingredients for a good tale.
I had a hard time getting into this book, probably because I haven't read the previous one. I felt a little lost, not knowing the backstory or the characters. This isn't a reflection on the writing, but just a recommendation to read the books leading up to this one. I enjoy the writing, no typos. It is a little dark, with grisly murders and drug use by the protagonist. The author has said the next installment will be more positive and I look forward to that. I will probably go back and read the books leading up to this one, but won't read it again.
This is a brilliant fast paced, really well written English detective series! An excellent story! Little unnerving the topic but overall a superb read! I will look for more by this writer & do strongly recommend!
