Read on Futekiya, I loved Indigo no Kibun, the side story to Marukido's Pornographer focusing on the relationship between Kijima and Kido before the events recounted in the other book.
Somehow, despite its dysfunctionality, I find the couple in this volume more interesting and intriguing than Kijima and Kuzumi.
The torments and insecurity of Kijima, played out and exploited by Kido, provide the narrative backbone to the story and the bittersweet finale (featuring an interesting flashforward) leave the reader with the right amount of closure and ambiguity.
As in the case of Pornographer , Indigo no Kibun has a beautiful live drama adaptation that I recommend to watch.
1) Marikudo Maki seems to have a literary background before coming into BL and it shows. I love that, but it's really challenging for me because I can't read. Pornographer wasn't as difficult because Kuzumi isn't part of the literary world, so to speak, but インディゴの気分 is about Kijima and Kido (who both studied literature at uni) so I had no idea what they're saying half the time.
Q: Why not read Futekiya's official translation? A: I didn't like Futekiya's translation of Pornographer and didn't want to pay to read a manga I already own.
2) Because I like Kuzumi a lot, I didn't know if I wanted to commit to a wholeass manga about Kido.
But recently I watched the live action series and decided to give this another chance. Watching the show also helped me out with the words I'm unfamiliar with.
So: we have Kido who's both drawn to Kijima and jealous of his ability to not give a fuck as well as his writing skills. (The mood where he deleted all his manuscripts in progress after reading Kijima's award-winning novel novel though.) For Kido, who just broke up with his girlfriend because her parents doesn't approve of his job, the thought of not going with the flow and just refusing to read the room is probably as frustrating as it is attractive. There's a lot of tension in the way he and Kijima interact because of how different and at the same time how similar they are.
I've seen people say they like Kido better than Kuzumi and wonder why Kijima ended up with him. Well, Kijima actually tells us why in the Mood Indigo live action: because Kuzumi is straightforward and tells Kijima how he feels. It's implied in 'I love your words' in the manga. Because both Kijima and Kido are the type that tend to keep their thoughts to themselves until their breaking point, it's harder to navigate their relationship. But it does make for a very sexy and tension-filled story.
It looked like Gamouda-sensei and Kijima talked a bit more in the manga, so I also wanted to read that. The thought of apprenticing to a well-known porn novelist is just so attractive to me? 😂 That whole set up added to the eroticism of the story. And of course, we also still explore eroticism in fiction: what is it that moves readers when it comes to erotic fiction? (According to Gamouda, the writer needs to convey his lust to the reader.) This series is a gift that keeps on giving. Did y'all know it has a 3rd book called Playback? I didn't know until I saw someone post a pic of their manga haul on twitter.
So I got that too and that's why I've been reading this again.
This is a prequel that was written after the original work, Pornographer, and I've got to say I liked this one a lot more. It's still got a similar vibe to it, but the story was more cohesive. I preferred reading about Rio and Kido's relationship. I liked seeing the author/apprentice relationship, Rio developed with the author. I honestly don't know what else I can say about this, except that I really liked it. I wish I had read this before the other, because maybe I would've liked it more. I may reread at some point just to see.
I really liked both the manga and the Indigo no Kibun series, because it doesn't give the perspective of always being together forever. I love Kijima and Kido both together and separately. I'm terrible with reviews.
This is 'Pornographers' prequel but read after 'Pornographer Playback'! Daaang even the prequel had a great storyline! I'm honestly impressed w/ this work! I appreciate seeing our mc's past struggles/relationship. It really explained A LOT. Awesome work~ ♡
Bittersweet. The best out of the series (this is the first of three books in total). I am a sucker for happy endings, but somehow the ending here is fitting.
