She remembers nothing.
She's about to change everything.

Ava knows she's in danger the minute she wakes up as a guest of the Fae Court. Unsure of who she is or how she got there, she discovers she's been turned into a fledgling fairy and is now part of the fairy society that has hidden from humans for centuries. Navigating her new abilities is intriguing, as she uncovers questions that point back to her lost memories. Until she stumbles across Cedric, a tight-lipped man whose presence changes everything.

Trusting Cedric thrusts Ava into the heart of a dark conflict, giving her an enemy she'd do anything to dethrone. Friends at her side, Ava must master her new fairy abilities to strike back at those who stole her identity.

But Ava has barely begun to learn the fairy world's secrets. In a world so complex and lethal, will Ava's instincts be enough to guide her through a brewing war?

Fae Found is the first book in a trilogy, the War of the Wings, by Chi Obasi. The 2nd is expected this summer/fall - I am so glad I won't have to wait long. Ava wakes up with no memories and realizes she is now fae (fairy). I have been loving the fairy fantasy and I liked how Obasi created a variety of fairies. Included in the book is a great chart that shows how they look and what their abilities are. Additionally, she made her characters diverse (which really makes sense once it's revealed that the characters come from all over the globe). My book actually had some coloured stickers in it that depicted the main characters. Overall, I really loved the plot and how this book set up the world and characters. My drawback to this book was that the writing style sometimes left me feeling like I was being told the story, versus being immersed in it. It didn't lessen the story, but it did make portions of it less exciting to read.

An extended review (with spoilers) is on my blog at www.shelbygreads.wordpress.com

I received an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review. Big thank you to the author! :D

3.5/5 stars

Let's start with the things I loved/liked about Fae Found:

1. unique, interesting world-building - The title made me expect to encounter something along the lines of the Fae from Holly Black's or Senan McGuire's work, but Chi Obasi chose to focus her world on fairies with actual wings. The different types of fairies, their wings, and their gifts were so fun to learn about. I liked how balanced the magic system was, each power having its equal and opposite. It made the world feel logical and consistent.

2. the main character - For me personally, I know a protagonist is well-written when their actions, speech, and thoughts never distract or confuse me. Writing a main character dealing with amnesia is not easy, since it means the character doesn't know who they themselves are, but the author did a great job handling that concept and making Ava feel like a real person. I cared about learning the truth of her past, I liked her as a person, and I especially enjoyed her arc.

3. the plot twist! - I can't say much because of spoilers, but... WOW! A lot of times you can see it coming a mile away, but I was totally taken by surprise when this one popped up and slapped me across the face. haha

4. the prose - The author has a consistent voice throughout the story, and I found the writing to be of the professional quality that I expect from any published book. There was never a point in the story that I felt reminded that I was reading an indie book, if that makes any sense.

Things I didn't like (just my personal preferences!):

1. info dumps! - As far as world-building goes, I like to learn through context. The author relies on exposition and training sequences to establish almost all of the world-building. It was a little boring for my taste, but luckily the actual content was interesting.

2. slow first half - I'm not going to lie, it doesn't feel like much happens in the first half of the book. Yes, there is some sense of a plot, but it never felt urgent or pressing until around the midpoint. If you enjoy a slower, more character and world-building focused read, then this shouldn't be a problem for you.

3. weak side characters - I felt that most of the supporting cast was not fleshed out. Motivations were unclear or unconvincing. Bad things that happened to certain characters did not hit me because I didn't know enough about them to care. Also, there are points in the story where A TON of people are introduced within a relatively short amount of time, so it was hard to keep track of people let alone get invested in them.

Overall, I think this book was a fun fantasy adventure well-suited to an audience of readers from teens to early twenties. If you love fairies, unique magic systems, found families, and clean romance, give this one a try!

What if you woke up and had no memory of your past life? Oh, and by the way, you are a fairy.

What I loved:
I loved LOVED Ava. I love her quiet strength and how she dealt with each challenge thoughtfully and with grace. And I really LOVED Cedric. The world-building was unique and interesting. I really enjoyed getting to know all the different kinds of fairies, the politics behind the Court, and how each of their abilities work. I love magic that has a price for its use. There is just a lot to love about this book.

What I didn't like:
The pacing went off a bit in the middle, but it quickly found it's feet again and came together for a satisfying ending.

Overall:
An excellent debut by an exciting new author. I can't wait to read the sequels. Because you know there are going to be more.

I received an ARC of Fae Found in exchange for an honest review… but I also ended up buying a physical copy!

If you love fantasy books featuring diverse characters, faeries, and intricate world building, you NEED to check out Fae Found! Chi Obasi has done an amazing job creating a unique story. This is NOT your typical “ancient fae king falls in love with a ‘human’” type of plot line. Obasi has created a race/society of faeries unlike anything I’ve read before in the fantasy genre, and this is one of those books where when you go back to read it again, you find a bunch of easter eggs! Definitely recommend.

I received an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
I’ve been in a reading slump for a while now, so it was a little hard to get into this book at first. Once I did though, it held my interest for the rest of the book and made me excited for the next two books(though this being an ARC means that I will have to wait quite a while to find out what happens next)!
I like that we learn about the world along with the main character(since she lost her memories). I often find that descriptions drag on and bore me, but these were paced well and interspersed within the story so that they were helpful instead of distracting. The relationships between characters were nuanced and realistic. This is an immersive book full of intriguing political systems, intense moral questions, and self-discovery; with the perfect amount of scenic forests
to be a wonderful autumn read.
I definitely recommend this book for lovers of fantasy and fairies!

Fae Found by Chi Obasi was a really fun low-fantasy story to wrap up my summer with. It was easy to read, even with the magical system that was used. Obasi made sure to include enough details that the reader could pick up on the magic system and how the fae worked without dumbing things down and spoon-feeding the reader every detail.
The environment was great to read, despite the moments of white room that happened every now and again. The places Obasi created for her world felt fleshed out, and I can’t wait to see them continued in the rest of the trilogy.
The characters in the book felt real, even the flaws the characters had felt genuine (even if I didn’t agree with the choices made, but that’s not a slight on the characters whatsoever, it just makes them feel human—or fae in this case). Same with my last point, the characters still have room to grow through the rest of the series, and that’s hard to do in writing. I find that in many books the author has to prepare for a book being a standalone, so their characters get capped in a sense, in knowing this will be a trilogy Obasi has given her characters the space needed to develop in a natural feeling way.
Overall, Fae Found is a great YA/NA book, suitable for readers across a wide age range to enjoy reading for the upcoming fall and winter season. In other words, it’s gonna be a nice cozy cabin book to snuggle up, read, and review!

I don't read fantasy too often, but I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Fae Found was a page-turner and I flew through the second half of the book to finish it so I could figure out what happened next.

Since the main character, Ava, wakes up in the fairy world and has lost her memory, you get to learn about the fairy world as she learns about it for the first time. The author did a great job at describing the fairy world, while incorporating different scenes to make it seem like we were experiencing it along with Ava.

The book had some twists and turns that I wasn't expecting, and it left me wanting to learn more about Ava and her new fairy world.

Since I don't read a lot of fantasy, the whole book I wanted to know more about why I should care about this fairy world and what the purpose is compared to the human world. I am looking forward to seeing more about the interaction between the two worlds hopefully in future books.

Overall, a great and quick read that will leave you guessing until the end!
