It's one hell of a mess, with the slight stench of romance. Ow!!! I promise that no human furries were harmed in this sticky situation. Will you enjoy it? Sure. I mean, you're reading my review. This reminded me so much of my first experience reading Daniel Volpe (Daniel Jay back in the day). Both had a great opening chapter, both stories had me excited to find such a great new author, even before I finished their stories, and both endings--superb. The author has a great ability to roll out a well-written story. Keep it up, you're going places.
As a chap who has committed a literary atrocity against hamsters myself (re; THE GLUTTONS) it would perhaps be cheeky of me to suggest that Benetti seriously needs their fucking head looking at. But in this one rare instance, permit the kettle to call the pot an even darker shade of Vantablack...

Terrifyingly disgusting of whatever this is. Devon is a one true monstrosity that does......this...to hamsters 🐹🐹🐹. I know it will definitely make you puke and throw the book due to its disgustingness but there is one thing that is severely overlooked when it comes to the whole point of the story itself that even other top reviews of this book may not have put their paws on. Sometimes people fail to dive deeper into the meaning and symbolisms of splatterpunk books because people often just read splatterpunk books for the sake of depravity—but THIS, is something that is pretty much very meaningful and its only through putting down your disturbed thoughts on "why the heck am i reading about Devon fucking hamsters and then sometimes cooking them afterwards". The focus of everyone when it comes to reading this book is almost always just about the fact that Devon fucks hamsters but this story actually gets deeper when it comes to its lessons and message, more specifically the poetic irony that comes with his father,,,,and his date partner named Peggy.
It's a simple story but it really has a meaningful discussion on the cycle of abuse that happens on masculine figures. When reading this book you are told that his mother does not exist. Why is that? It is also said that he inherited this action from his father who also......yeah you get it he also fucks hamsters BUT THE REASONING IS NOW DIFFERENT, the 'motive' is significantly different between the two men, his father is the prime fault of this catastrophy and the reason why this came to be because when the father enjoyed having sexual intercourse with hamsters too much, he actually died while doing it (shoved a hamster down his hole then uhh ok pls can someone get that scene out of my brain pls), with Devon witnessing the entire thing as a child. It gives a wildly varied reason on why they do the things they do. His father fucks hamsters for the pleasures and satisfaction while Devon himself does it to AVENGE his father's death and punish these sick creatures for killing his father because he didn't know what actually happened at that day, Devin just thought that hamsters are what killed his father and now he must seek to destroy each and every single hamster that exist in the world.
Why was it hamsters in the first place? What does it symbolize? Even the sexual positions that they do can be dissected in such a way that it mirrors all the traumatic misdirection that Devon experienced as a child without guidance. All the objects present and the places that he goes to symbolize many aspects to a society that are simultaneously apathetic and dismissive on the traumatic past of what many young men face.
HE WAS WATCHING ALF!!!!!!!!!!! THE BEST KIDS SHOW OF ALL TIME!!!! HE WAS PLAYING WITH TRAINS 🚂, CHOO-CHOO! HE WAS IMAGINING A GREAT ACTION ADVENTURE WITH HIS SKELETOR ACTION FIGURE (I LOVED THAT SHOW TOO EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T ALIVE YET WHEN THAT SHOW AIRED IN 1983), HE DOESN'T DESERVE WITNESSING THAT ABSOLUTE HORRID SCENE THAT HAPPENS AFTER WHEREDevon saw his dad die as his dad shoved a hamster in his ass................
My heart really goes for ma traumatized bois 😔 and the possible coping mechanisms for the people who didn't choose the healthy healing route like me..jk maybe it's also not (I mean multiple personality disorder also isn't typically a healthy coping mechanism but likeeeeee it can be 🥲🥲) But one thing for sure, doing hate sex with hamsters DEFINITELY isn't a healthy coping mechanism.
Almost every part and every scene and action is used in a way that reflects the effects of poor parenting and the lack of a sufficient masculine role model for young men. So here we have troubled people even hiding through silly masks in society. Devon isss like a pretty good guy just......(he fucks hamsters that he bought from the pet store).
But after all of that there's still one massive plot point to talk about and it's Peggy (the girl that he dated....aaaand also the cashier in the pet store where he buys all his hamsters from, she's a bit sus of him lol cuz he buys a little bit tooooo many hamsters). She pretty much only affects the ending of this book and serves as the poetic justice but it's done in a way that is unexpected and relates everything from hamsters to father issues down to the father's own last words. Beautifully written and executed that is thought provoking all throughout. The ending was the best and there is even a little bit of a twist and a major detail that Peggy adds to the table that makes Devon's truama made the more sense that it did.
All of this in what? 32 pages because splatterpunk authors pretty much dont write long books 😆 (Its 7k words so its like EXTREMELY EXTREMELY short). This genre of literature is certainly a gem because underneath all the depravity and disgusting nature there is insightful commentary on societal issues, but ye don't read this it's still about Devon fucking hamsters at the end of the day but there's a pieve of valuable wisdom hidden in between all the lines and all the paragraphs in this gross, gory book.
Jesus Christ what in the rodent banging did I just read??.. This was crazy and hilarious I loved it but I did make me think about my poor little Rosy from my childhood in so glad she never met Devon 😂
Wow....just...wow...this was...um...something, all right. I really can't say much without spoiling at least some part of the story. But it's really, really vulgar and damaging to everyone to may read it. I'll never enter a pet store ever again, nor will I watch ALF, or will I stick any more small animals in my tush, either. Although, if you think about it, ALF was pretty crazy. This family keeps a random alien in their house that destroys the property to make a pool, continually tries to eat their cat, and sasses them every time there's an opportunity. I mean, it resulted in several seasons of hilarious content, but, at the same time, ALF could be the origin of many disastrous situations like this. The synopsis really says it all, but there are also some really strange surprises in store, too. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need a shower and drink.
Short of an endorsement from Richard Gere, this one should be considered a true triumph for those who dig stories starring dudes engaging in the physical act of love with small rodents in ways that are highly unlikely to be PETA-approved. Bizarre, brutal, yet weirdly heartfelt, Mr. Benetti’s story is far from a quick, dirty and forgettable read. But rather, an extremely well-paced and engaging tale of a man trying so hard to forget the past, that he’s condemned to repeat it and ultimately becomes consumed by it. With a what-the-hell just happened twist ending, those into the graphic, gross and engrossing needn’t spin their wheels debating whether to add this immediately to any to-be-read pile.
Holy fuck my 👁👁! Wtaf did I even just read ?! This was one of the most vile and grotesque books I’ve ever read. I haven’t stopped laughing from page 2. Benetti is one sick lil 🐹. I loved this story too much !
I read this blind and really didn’t know what to expect…Wow. Just wow. Awesome debut, very well-written, deliciously depraved and descriptive, and an awesome WTF ending. It surprised me in a great way. Definitely an author to watch. Loved it!
I was told to listen to the audiobook, so I did. It did not disappoint. Omg a fantastic narration of this grossly bizarre fetich story. Laughing my way through it!
Devon watched his dad when he was younger die from having a hamster up his and he had to pull it out, the hamster ended up chewing his insides and ripping out his organs. Years from then on Devon wanted revenge out for all the hamsters in the world. He would buy them, have sex with them, and then eat their dead carcasses. Devon starts to have a liking for one of the workers at the pet store named Peggy, he decides to ask her over to his house because he wants to have sex with her. Little does he know that Peggy has a surprise for him.
This was given 5 stars because I was expecting fluffy hamsters for pets!!! But I should have known better. This knocked my socks off. Bennett is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.
This is the first time I’m truly stumped with reviewing a book. Please read it. You won’t regret it. Or maybe you will and hate me for it. Either way it’s giving attention to the book and author and that’s a win. 🫶

I've met RJ and we chatted about dogs, gushing over our stories like any proud pet parent. For such a sweet dude, he sure writes some flucked-up stuff. I think my jaw was on the floor the entire reading of this book. Definitely EXTREME horror. I need a brain enema to cleanse these images from my skull. 🤣
Devon takes after his dad with his weird habits Involving hamsters. Until he meets his match! I can’t say too much because this is a VERY short story. TW: ANIMAL CRUELTY (heavy) this was such a weird story but I loved how it turned out!
