What if you could catalyze your own transformation? Authors Rick and Amy Simmons first uncovered liminal space―the idea that periods of uncertainty have the power to reshape our lives―while studying abroad for their graduate program in organizational behavior. Shortly afterward, they began experimenting with another rather than waiting for an inflection point to occur, they could launch it themselves―curating their own liminal experiences and accelerating their growth. Helping others navigate liminality and create it themselves became the heart of their work. Harnessing the Power of Liminal Space is a two-part guide, illuminating the potential of liminality for individuals, teams, and organizations, and breaking down its elements so readers can launch their own liminal experiences. With stories from leaders helming organizations of all sizes, from a regional health facility to a corporation with products in 90 percent of American homes, Unleashed provides the practical and theoretical insights necessary for transformation.

Amazing book that combines best-practices, real-life testimonials, and research to help you harness or curate liminal space in your life- basically how you create an openness to change through discontinuity. Definitely a read if you want to take yourself, team, and/or the organization to the next level!
As everyone goes through life, you hit moments where "everything changes." While these experiences are unique and different for everyone, we all know what someone is talking about when a moment such as this is described.
Rick and Amy have created a language to talk about these moments. A way to quantify what these moments are and to look at them as an opportunity to change your life in ways that you want to change it. "Liminal Space" is the key term that defines these points in time where something fundamental has shifted and we take the time (or are faced to take the time) to make decisions about our priorities, our goals, and, like a domino, what our actions will be.
Beyond just defining a language to enable us to speak about these experiences, Rick and Amy have moved on to purport that we can leverage these times in "liminal space" to our advantage. Through preparation, consideration, and conscious action, we can be prepared for times of liminality and use them to achieve our deepest desires and goals.
Furthermore, in addition to the liminal actions that happen whether we want them to or not (job change, death of someone we know, etc.), we can leverage a discipline of creating our own 'liminal' events on a regular basis. These regular events then become opportunities to check in with ourselves and confirm that we are still on the path that we want to be on, that we are pursuing the goals that are most meaningful to ourselves.
Life most habits, it requires discipline and is seemingly much easier to say than to do. However, Rick and Amy provide a framework, tools, and a path to leveraging liminality to your advantage. If you are interested, they'll even provide mentors / guides. So, are you ready to jump into the unknown of liminality to discover your own best future?
