Sabrine, a Greenwitch, has grown up thinking that the female, winged warriors known as the Daughters were unrepentant killers, gleefully slaughtering all humans who stood in their way. This all changes when her ex, vampire Lora Walker, resurfaces with a shocking revelation--Sabrine's mother was once the feared leader of the Daughters. Sabrine has unknowingly been groomed to be her mother's assistant.
Now Sabrine needs to reevaluate everything she thinks she knows, and she needs to do it fast, because the barrier that separates the magical world from the world of the humans is cracking open, and nobody knows why. And the only person she can rely on is the last person she wants to deal with: her ex-girlfriend.
I’m a fantasy and queer contemporary author who just loves it when OH MY GOD THEY WERE ROOMMATES. I’m inspired by absolutely everything and everyone, and I believe writing about pretty people mouth-touching is a form of resistance. Join me!
3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4 because the sheer breadth of diversity in the book makes my queer heart sing.
The mythos here is interesting and engaging, and I’d love to read more stories from this world in future. But while the worldbuilding is gradually built up throughout the book, the story building is bit more erratic - sometimes several chapter go by with very little impact, and then the last four or five are so jammed full it’s a bit overwhelming.
I love the characters, especially they/them icon Domi! They talk and behave like a real queer friend group which is nice, but the quirky tone does sometimes detract from more serious scenes. I also take issue with some of the unexamined power dynamics - Sabrine is a teenager while most of her close circle are at least 2 centuries old and every single person she meets knew the truth about her mum and lied to her for her whole life, but this is never really spoken about after the initial reveal and I did feel it cast a bit of a shadow over what are otherwise lovely supportive queer friendships.
Overall, a good YA fantasy read, which would have blown my mind as a queer teenager.
A compelling first chapter in what promises to be an eventful series, 'All Daughters Rise' is populated by diverse characters and an intricately plotted magic system that is immediately both understandable and unique. The characters seem to step off the page and into your imagination; I wouldn't mind taking Elsebet home with me!
Looking forward to what comes next from this talented author.
So incredibly good. I got a chance to read it and for a first time published author, I was so impressed. I feel the fantasy genre is so starved of LGBTQ-centric characters. My favorite thing about the book is it doesn't treat the sapphic side of the story as a plot point. HIGHLY recommend!!
Sabrine is a greenwitch, taught that a female group called the Daughters were cold blooded killers. After her ex, Lora, returns unexpectedly and reveals the truth about her mother, Sabrine needs to reevaluate what she's been taught, and where she must go from there.
I loved the diversity in this book. We have a f/f book that doesn't focus on steam and actually had a great plot. Sabrine's character was great, and the way she reacted to the lies she had been told was completely believable. Her relationship with Lora and the other characters felt real, and despite this being a fantasy based book, the story felt realistic.
I didn't like that the people she interacted with knew the truth about her mother, lied to her about it, and nothing else being said about this. It felt glanced over and unresolved. Sabrine is a teenager, hanging out with much older people who knew what they were doing. I would've liked to see more explanation or at least some repercussions to what they did.
Brilliant Well Paced Encapsulating New YA Sapphic Fantasy Romance.
Where do I begin… the characters are loveable, well thought out and just have their little quirks that make them who they are. They are all hilarious and the interacts between them are stomach clenching-ly funny. The romances between multiple characters are also very well done, the relationships have their issues however together they are happy, healthy and it’s great with good rep. Every single MC is queer with rep including gay, lesbian, bisexual, non binary and aro/ace. They discuss it briefly in passing conversations and it’s extraordinarily well done and flows well. I just fell in love with them all and how they interacted and it was my favourite component.
World-building was great and very interesting to read about how all the magic Kinborn interact with each other and the divides between them and humans. It was everything it needed to be, not too complex it’s confusing but enough for intrigue.
The plot was slow-medium paced and it wasn’t very plot heavy as the character development seemed to be a bigger focus of the book, however it was enjoyable and easy to follow.
Overal an amazing book and I cannot wait for the second in this duology!
Was reticent but desperate for something to read from the genre I love. Gripped from the beginning, I must admit I was thrown out slightly with original entries to introduce a non-binary character. The explanation could have come sooner, but it did come. Editing, word usage, correct spelling all enhanced the experience. Wonderful, heart warming, heart wrenching insightful read. Look forward to more.
honestly if i was sabrine, i’d go into an intense bisexual witchy panic too. lora is like a YA fantasy version of lexa (especially the swords 🗡🗡) and i’m here for it
on a real note this is probably one of my favorite LGBTQ fantasy-centric novels i’ve had the pleasure of reading & i’m already anticipating the second book’s release
Pretty good! I will say that I felt like not a lot happened plot-wise for most of the book until the last ~10% and then everything seemed to happen at once. I'm looking forward to the next book, though!
I've had the pleasure of reading pre-release versions of this book, and also knowing some of these characters in other forms, by different names, etc. so I may be a little bit biased. But oh my gosh, what a lush, wonderful world that Alysa has created. I can't wait to see where the second volume of this series takes us!
