Colorado Cowboys #3

To Tame a Cowboy

Rate this book
Brody McQuaid is a broken man, and he knows it. While his body survived the war, his soul did not. Besides loving his little niece, his only other sense of purpose comes from saving the wild horses that roam South Park. Ranchers in the area have taken to killing the horses, which are competing with their cattle to feed on the open grass.

Savannah Marshall is a veterinarian on her family's Colorado ranch. She longs to keep her father happy following the tragic death of her older brother, including marrying a man of his choosing. But days before her wedding, she gets cold feet and disappears to South Park. As she learns more about the destruction of the horses, she joins Brody in an attempt to save the wild creatures. But when Savannah's family and the resentments of the area cattlemen catch up with them both, Brody and Savannah will have to tame their fears if they've any hope to let love run free.

I recently went on a Jody Hedlund binge and re-read nearly all of her books. There's just something about them—it feels like they effortlessly pull me in. And this one is no different. I think Brody is my fave (so far) of the McQuaid siblings...he's wounded and heart-tugging, and Savannah is a perfect complement to his character. In usual Hedlund fashion, the plot kept me turning pages and the romance is spot-on. Loved this one and looking forward to the next in the series!

Brody is definitely my favorite McQuaid! He deals with the effects of the trauma he experienced during the war. His temper is out of control until he meets Savannah, a sweet Southern Belle and Veterinarian. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the horses and the beautiful setting! The writing is amazing. And I can’t wait to read Ivy’s story! There are a few things that happened at the end that I would have like played out differently but overall great read! Highly recommend! The books in this series keep getting better and better. This was filled with grace, mercy, and redemption! How God can take the worst circumstances and bring healing. Brody & Savannah’s story and struggles gripped my heart and brought a small piece of healing.

The author writes in many genres and excels at all of them.
I have read all of the books in this series, all wonderful but this one is my favorite.
Brody is a broken man from his time spent in the Civil War and what he blames himself for being unable to do.
Spending time with his little niece relaxes him and makes him feel whole again.
Though he may not show it outwardly he has a tender heart , especially when it comes to the wild horses in the area who are being killed by local ranchers when their cattle don't have enough of the lush grass for grazing.
Despite no formal training Savannah Marshall has vet smarts after working with a trained veterinarian for many years.
Wanting to please her father she agrees to marry a man of his choosing but decides against it at the last minute and runs away.
Not having a destination in mind she gets to town and sees a horse being terribly mistreated and rushes to treat it. Two tender hearts meet then, Brody with his love of animals and Savannah with her doctoring knowledge and her love of animals.
Savannah is on the run and her family wants her back but will love be able to run wild and free like the horses when she is found or will her heart be caged?
We also get a glimpse of Brody's sister in this story, she will not be held back. She is free spirited and I love her personality.
I'll bet there will be a book telling her story soon and I can't wait to read it.
I loved this book!

I always knew Jody Hedlund was a great author because of all the praise she gets on Bookstagram. So without reading any of her books, I already thought she was a fabulous author. But…I’m grateful for this new book that encouraged me to read the three books in this series. Each of the Colorado Cowboys novels were special in their own way.
I also have a soft spot for wounded men from the war in novels and Brody from To Tame a Cowboy sure met that criteria. He was a sweetheart and the connection he had with Savannah was adorable.
Man!! I was so invested in this book and there was so much angst that I was messaging friends who also had read it just to know everything turned out okay. This was a rollercoaster of a ride and I loved it—despite me needing to know that everything works out in the end.
In addition to the sweet story, I appreciated Brody’s journey back to God and his growing as a person. You can read this as a stand-alone, but it means more to know who the other characters in the novel are.
A big thanks to Jody Hedlund and Bethany House Publishers for releasing a wonderful book!

'Wounds might shape us, but they can't determine who we are.'

I have followed Jody Hedlund's books since she wrote her first one. I've never missed one and I never intend to. I love her books, whichever genre she writes in, and she is accomplished in all. This series started out so good and I was a fan. But this book? It's the best yet in this series. I was drawn in at the very start. Hedlund has crafted a hero that is damaged from his time in the Civil War and a horrific prison during that conflict. He keeps to himself and will let no one in. I hurt for him as he felt such agony of emotional pain. I loved how the author handled this and how God moves in His most wonderful way for His children.

This one is for the keeper shelf for sure. I know I will treasure it. Recommended very much.

My thanks to Bethany House Publishers for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The review is completely my own.

Brody...suffering from PTSD after serving in the Civil War. He feels guilty for the men he couldn't save and the lives he ended. Brody's passion is working with horses, especially wild ones.

Savannah...set to marry Chandler to help her father financially. She desires to be a veterinarian and Chandler doesn't approve of a wife working outside the home.

Their love story is a sweet one.

As with the others in the series, To Tame a Cowboy brings to life what it was like for pioneers settling in the west.

Brody's sister Ivy is a fun character and I can't wait for her story.

My gratitude to publisher Bethany House for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Loved Loved Loved! All the feels:} This has the sweet southern belle and the battered war veteran cowboy! Goodness yes! I love how Hedlund gives you bits of steam to let you feel how much these two want each other! Not many romance writers know how to give you just a bit! Not too steamy tho for the reader who wants the bedroom door closed:} This is such a sweet story, I loved every bit of it. It has the Hudlund flair for sure. I have liked this series so far.
This is a Christian romance with some hot kisses:}

This was my favorite of the series so far. I am eager to see if Ivy gets a book.

Tropes: fleeing from arranged marriage, army vet

Content: Brody deals with the effects of the war through fighting, kissing, non-s*xual nudity [fighting hypothermia]

“Wounds might shape us, but they can’t determine who we are”
“He’d sensed God’s redemption at work inside little by little, taking his scars and hurts.”
Welcome to Brody McQuaid’s story. He is still haunted by nightmares of battle and Andersonville during the Civil War. Brody has a soft spot for animals and especially his young niece. Ms. Hedlund shows that a strong man, who is brought low by memories, can overcome with faith in God. She also shows how people are human and are tempted but that they do not have to give in to their desires. The author portrays a confused heroine who wants to please her parents but seeks to be a veterinarian. Savannah escapes from a loveless union and ends up on the ranch that the McQuaids own.
Danger in a snowstorm threatens, and other men appear to have ulterior motives. Ms. Hedlund crafts characters with grit, determination, faith and a love of family.
I am anxious to read the story of Ivy in the final book in the series.

This was pretty decent! I definitely liked it better than A Cowboy for Keeps. There was more substance to this and the characters were (mostly) better.

Characters:
A bit of insta-love but I suppose that is to be expected. Savannah was an admirable heroine. I do not usually like the animal-loving type but she was solid. She had a sense of humor and determination which was nice, though I found her to be a tad bit annoying at times. (too much noticing of the "bulging muscles, broad chest and big hands") Also she fanned her face quite a few times. Lots of blushing. Although as someone who does not have control of the blushing I suppose I can relate...
I thought her trait of 'always thinking the best of someone' was an interesting one and is not often touched on in books.
Brody was (here's where the 'mostly' comes in) good as well; human. Had his faults and messed up sometimes, but ultimately tried his best for the most part. Found him annoying at times as well with all his "wanting her". I did admire, though, that he resisted for the most part. Especially the whole cabin incident. Also the scene with the dance and how he pushed all the other gentlemen away to dance with Savannah himself. A little toxic and rude.
Flora was so cute! I loved how she really grounded Brody. A nice touch to the story!
I am looking forward to seeing more of Ivy in the next book! (and Jericho hehe, also I just love the name Jericho. Dunno why) Dylan too.

Plot:
Great! Never a dull moment. My only issue was few parts where I thought that "oh this is super convenient to have happened" that felt like were just there for the sake of tension.

Writing:
There were a few lines where I was confused. Jody Hedlund is a great writer but there were points in this book when I was questioning everything: Like this gem of a line: "the brown of his eyes was a rich and luxurious as the thickest and brownest of mink fur" I am pretty sure I laughed out loud at that one...Also "...and immediately set his blood to percolating like coffee in a tin pot on high flames."
But then there were also some actual gems like: "Reckon I've buried a lot of myself and am dusting off the ashes so I can see beauty again." Also I like this one: "The fella was so arrogant he'd probably gotten his calluses from patting his own back."

All in all I quite enjoyed this book. Especially better than the first one, so that is good. I can't wait for the next one!

I love a good wounded hero, and Brody McQuaid certainly fits the bill! Brody is so spiritually and emotionally crippled following his experiences in the Civil War, and, while his young niece helps pull him out of his fog, it's not until Savannah shows up on the scene that he truly begins to heal.

Savannah is fleeing an unwanted engagement when she encounters the McQuaids. While she helps Brody heal, he helps her to find her voice and overcome her people-pleasing tendencies. They truly are a perfect match.

So here's what I loved (as non-spoilery as possible):
- Honesty is a Hallmark of Savannah and Brody's relationship
- Sizzling chemistry and wonderful romantic scenes that never cross the line
- A realistic villain (who you know will never win)
- While Savannah helps Brody, it's very clear that the Lord is ultimately responsible for his healing
- Check-ins with the other McQuaids, and a great setup for Ivy's story

I absolutely devoured this book! I'm glad I haven't read book two yet (I read A Cowboy for Keeps last year) because now I'll still be able to spend time with the McQuaids while I wait for Ivy's book! 5 stars.

Content note: Brody struggles with PTSD, which can be hard to read about. Also, a suicide attempt in the past is briefly discussed.

Disclosure of material connection: I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Jody Hedlund has delivered another masterpiece! To Tame a Cowboy is heartfelt, inspiring, and just a beautiful story. This one is an absolute must-read.

I’m realizing Jody can’t write a story I won’t fall in love with, and Brody and Savannah’s book is a perfect example. I adored their separate and entwined character development. Brody’s journey was particularly poignant—I have recently spent time researching my own relatives who fought in the Civil War, and one of them was imprisoned at Andersonville just like Brody. Jody portrayed these horrible experiences in a way that is relatable and respectful. I also loved seeing characters whose stories I have already enjoyed or am eagerly anticipating!

If you haven’t read Jody’s books yet, you’re seriously missing out. Her Colorado Cowboys series is the perfect place to start! 5/5 stars

This was such a fun series to read and this last book was my favorite! Wounded heroes experiencing PTS tug at my heart and I love reading about their healing process. Brody and Savannah have an impact on each other for good, and Brody's family encourage their connection when they see the changes in him just from her presence. The plot with the wild horses was interesting as Brody and Savannah grow closer and develop amazing chemistry- great romantic tension as they struggle to work out what their futures hold in store. I appreciated the depth to the characters and the way the author skillfully allowed me to connect with their emotions. I can't wait for the next book!

What a wonderful addition to the Colorado Cowboys series! If you haven’t read books one and two, this book can easily be enjoyed as a stand alone novel. The brothers and their families from the first two books make appearances in this one, however the story is strong on its own.

The author did a fabulous job in this novel of showing the struggles that Brody and Savannah faced, as well as the amazing chemistry that built between the two. I enjoyed seeing the depth of these characters. Brody was a man who felt deeply and had been very traumatized from his time as a Union soldier during the war. He battled anger issues, depression, terror filled dreams, and feelings of unworthiness. But there was this strength about him and a calm that helped him be an excellent horse trainer.

Savannah was also a character with depth who always looked for the good in people. Her desire to please her family was the reason she was engaged to be married to a man she did not love. Savannah was a smart woman and a talented veterinarian. She was very good with animals but needed to learn to stand up for herself and for the type of life she wanted to live.

The love that grew quickly from friendship between these two was perfect. They were very well suited for each other. The author did a great job of showing that Savannah and Brody both struggled with not allowing their feelings to make them cross the line farther than some stolen kisses, even when tempted to do so. This story had a great blend of romance, danger, and western life.

A hurting veteran and a runaway bride find a change of perspective in the Colorado Mountains.

Brody McQuaid returns from The War Between the States a changed man, haunted by what he had seen he struggles to adjust to civilian life, causing his family to worry. I loved how supportive Brody's family is, especially Flynn. Flora is just the cutest little thing, her relationship with Brody is just so stinking adorable. Brody has a big heart, but he has trouble pushing past the nightmares.

Savannah has a gift for healing and a heart for the hurting. Despite her father's wishes she just cannot resign herself to marrying the man that her father has chosen for her. I loved how she fits right in with the McQuaid clan from the get go, her love for the animals, and her heart for others.

Overall, this was an enjoyable historical romance, set against the beautiful but treacherous Colorado mountains. I appreciated the strong themes of family being there through thick and thin. I liked getting to revisit the McQuaid family, seeing Linea and Flynn happily married, and I am looking forward to what is in store for Ivy and Dylan, especially Ivy as she has always has a way of putting things outright. Great for fans of Western romantic reads and fans of Ms. Hedlund's previous books!

Holy buckets of love, does Jody Hedlund know how to write a cowboy story! Where is the 6-star button??

I LOVED A Cowboy for Keeps and did not think any other cowboy book could measure up but I was wrong. This one was just as good!!

Brody is struggling to leave the horrors of war behind; Savannah dreams of being a vet and is fleeing from an arranged marriage. Their characters were so likable and both had wonderful character arcs. The plot and setting had me hooked from the very first page and the storyline was so smooth that the pages practically turned themselves.

And can we just talk about the romance and chemistry? Oh mylanta. So much tension and chemistry between Brody and Savannah and yet they also had a great friendship and emotional connection! And Brody? What a gentleman!

Cannot recommend this book and series enough, and I will be counting down the days until Ivy's story releases!

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

4.5 stars, rounded up. Oo boy, the romance in this book between Savannah and Brody is fantastic! I really enjoy Jody Hedlund's westerns and this is one of the best! I really loved the wild mustangs that are such an important part of this story and how both Brody and Savannah grow into who they are as well as together in this book. And it's always fun to see characters from previous books!

Absolutely loved!

To Tame a Cowboy is the third installment in Jody Hedlund's Colorado Cowboy series. This one follows Brody McQuaid, a war torn cowboy trying to forget his past and build a life around horses. Then he meets a lovely lady Veterinarian who seems to be a balm to his tragic past.

Jody brings you the historical romance feels. I love being in Colorado country, on the ranch, and the small town of Fairplay! I think Brody and Savannah's story is my favorite so far! The romance is sweet, swoony, with the forced proximity trope we know and love.

Brody is the gentlest and sweetest of men. All heart eyes for that Cowboy! His PTSD from the war breaks my heart. He does have a little temper for sure and can get into some fights but to me that stems from his experiences. Big heart that one.

Savannah is lovely. Strong spirit, smarts, heart of gold. They are perfect for each other. The cabin scene and the things he does for her. So beautiful!

Heartbreaking, tender with some action and adventure! You will fall in love with this cowboy. I sure did!

And oh goody....Ivy and Jericho!!! So excited to get to the next book!

Must read by Jody Hedlund!

Of the books I've read to date of Jody's, this series is my favorite. Her romanticism of the dusty and uncivilized west is top-notch. Throw in some great chemistry and I'm a fan. All of the moments between immediately infatuated Brody and Savannah were swoony and sweet.
Brody has PTSD and struggles with life after being a soldier in the Civil War. Savannah only wants to be a vet and an arranged marriage is not the ticket to her dreams. When their worlds collide, there's an instant connection.
Of the three released so far, this might be my favorite, but it's a close one with the first book. I love the epilogues at the end of each that introduce the next couple to be featured. I can only hope the stories continue to be bold and give me those dip-my-toes-into-the-Wild-West feelings I'm now accustomed to.
Thank you to Just Read Tours for the e-arc. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Love, love, love, love, love this book. If you have read the first two, you will swoon for this one. If you haven’t read the first two, you will swoon for this one (but I highly recommend the first two, too)

I’ve been intrigued with knowing more about Brody. He survived the civil war, Gettysburg, several battles, war prison, and he has survivor’s guilt along with PTSD. He struggles through this story and your heart can’t help but reach for him. Savannah is a lady running from an undesirable marriage, but also looking to find herself a spot as a veterinarian, doing what she loves. The tension between these two is unreal, in the best way. Every time I leave a Jody Hedlund book I just shake my head wondering how she is able to release so many books and not one has disappointed me. I adore this book and I think it’s either tied with A Cowboy for Keeps (the first in the Colorado Cowboys series) or it’s officially my favorite Jody Hedlund book. Absolutely a must read. I’m ready for a reread! And also the last chapter, introducing Ivy’s story, wow. I am so excited for October. I can’t wait to read what happens next.

Jody Hedlund turns out an impressive number of books each year, and she hits all the right notes. In fact, through the first half of To Tame a Cowboy, I thought things had become too formulaic. No surprises, not much creativity - though the writing is smooth, as always.

It was the last third of the book that brought the character depth and interest that I'd been hoping for, making the story satisfying. I appreciated Brody's character growth as he began to heal from the traumas he experienced during wartime and even before. Savannah's arc was less dramatic, though she, too, had lessons to learn.

I've grown to love the Rocky Mountain setting as this series has progressed. I'm looking forward to Ivy's story, as she's been the spunkiest of the McQuaid siblings.

This has been my favorite book in this series so far. It’s also the first book in the series to be a 5 star read for me.
I loved Brody so much! I loved how his storyline, how his PTSD from the war and his healing process was all written. It was beautiful to see how despite his many scars, both physically and mentally, he was able to see himself redeemable and not as a failure specially in God’s eyes.
I also loved the chemistry and the relationship between Brody and Savannah.
I’m excited to get to Ivy’s story next and I can already sense that I’m going to love it even if it will probably break me too.

I absolutely loved this story!

I have always enjoyed the way Jody Hedlund writes her characters, she makes them real and honest. In To Tame a Cowboy Brody and Savannah were very well matched and their depth was really good. I enjoyed the adventure they were on and I mean there were HORSES. Uhem.

The storyline was well developed and I liked how Jody Hedlund used past trauma (the civil war in Brody's case) to really make you stop and thing.

Overall, this was my favorite book in the series so far and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. A definite 4 stars from me

Another excellent western and sweet romance from author Jody Hedlund. This fabulous story is a great addition to the Colorado Cowboys series. Saving wild horses that roam in South Park bring together an unlikely romance between a cowboy and a female veterinarian. Readers will fall in love with the sweet characters as they come to know them and their struggles and strengths. Hedlund has written an inspiring story of overcoming hard things. Readers of Hedland's work will be sure to love this cowboy romance.

To Tame a Cowboy by Jody Hedlund lands as the third novel in the Colorado Cowboys series but reads well as a standalone story. To me, this book is the best one so far in the series. The plot clips along without meandering which kept me interested and turning the pages. The romance between Savannah and Brody contributed tension and some delicious romantic moments without the crazy-in-lust mindset present in the prior novel of this series.

Beyond the romance in To Tame a Cowboy, Brody and Savannah are highly likeable characters in need personal healing. Savannah has boundary work to do while Brody suffers from war-related PTSD and uncontrolled anger. Savannah’s sweet spirit and gentle way with animals lands her a veterinarian job, but she brings an outside-of-the-family perspective that Brody desperately needs. The dynamic between Brody and Savannah included romance, but also a mutually beneficial relationship that pushed them both toward mental health, even when they didn’t realize or expect it.

Looking back at the quotes I marked in To Tame a Cowboy by Jody Hedlund, I found several that demonstrated how caring for animals inspired wisdom. I’ll finish this review with a quote here: “She’d learned over the years that wounded creatures often required more time and patience before being willing to trust. And she sensed Brody needed an extra dose of time and patience.” (Page 35) Readers who enjoy inspirational historical romance will find a story of fresh starts, healing, and new love in To Tame a Cowboy by Jody Hedlund.

How can you not enjoy a Jody Hedlund book? She really can write any genre! I really enjoyed this book and it completely gives you all the feels. The romance was sweet and definitely there and just perfect between these two characters. I really enjoyed the setting of pioneer times and how she transports you there with her details in the story.

In Brody's story you will find a lot of hurts and emotions. There is a struggle with PTSD so that could be a possible trigger for some. The healing process that comes through that was rewarding and I think the author did a great job with it.

I will say that this is one of those series that should be read in order, at least for me so you can better understand the characters and their storylines. I am anxious to read the next one! Surely Ivy will get her own story. If you enjoy historical fiction you will definitely enjoy this one!

“They were doing something so right, protecting the mustangs. As wild as they were, they had incredible potential if tamed by the right hands. Wasn’t that how it was with God? When others gave up, He kept going, kept pursuing, always seeing the potential of a person tamed by His hands.”

I’m so in love with this series! To Tame A Cowboy is the third installment of Jody Hedlund’s Colorado Cowboys series. Each book is a joy and allows us to spend quality time with the McQuaid siblings as they carve out lives in 1860’s Colorado.

Here we meet middle child Brody, a sensitive sweetheart destroyed by his service in the Civil War and time at Andersonville Prison. Once a quiet animal lover with a gift for drawing, he now spends his time getting into fights and pushing away everyone who cares about him, with the exception of his three year old niece. And newcomer Savannah Marshall.

Savannah is a talented veterinarian on the brink of a marriage to her father’s ranch manager for the sake of a business arrangement. But marrying Chandler and giving up her calling is not something Savannah is ready for. Running away into the mountains, she meets Brody trying to save an abused mustang, and finds herself needed, not only as a vet but as a calm in Brody’s storm.

As Savannah and Brody grow closer, Savannah remains torn between being a loyal daughter and being true to herself while Brody finds himself challenged and inspired by conversations with the girl invading his heart. Can they tame their fears and allow love to set them free?

I loved each moment I spent wrapped up in this story. The heart and soul of To Tame A Cowboy is Brody’s journey to healing with Savannah and God’s help. I loved every parallel between Brody’s work with and love for the wild horses and God’s desire to work with and love us. I loved Savannah’s growth in learning from Brody how to stand up for herself. I loved how it wasn’t just Brody saving Savannah or Savannah saving Brody. Throughout the book they are exactly what each other needs. Every classic Jody Hedlund romantic spark kept me burning through pages and rooting for happily ever after.

Jody Hedlund delivers an emotional journey in Brody and Savannah’s story, a journey of healing and faith and love. Not without rocks in the path and danger around the bend, the end result is believable and rewarding on every front.

Always a joy to reunite with the McQuaid siblings, I enjoyed Flynn and Brody’s relationship growth, the absolute gem of 3-year-old Flora, and getting even more excited to read Ivy’s upcoming story. And then there’s the anticipation building with worry for Dylan! Yes, this series is certainly cementing it’s place on my favorites shelf.

Thank you to Jody Hedlund, Bethany House, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this story. My opinions are my own.

“They share a passion to heal what is broken, but it’s their own hearts that need to be made whole” in the third Colorado Cowboys book, To Tame a Cowboy, from Jody Hedlund and Bethany House. Both Brody McQuaid and Savannah Marshall have had their share of tragedy in the past. As the wild horses of South Park bring them together, they share a purpose, face their challenges, find a little healing—and of course, what kind of Jody Hedlund book would this be without some romance? It’s sweet and uplifting and adventurous, and I’m sure that fans of historical romance will enjoy this read (especially if you’ve enjoyed the previous books in the series).

(I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.)
