Rate this book
When Marcus Kyle found an old book, C.A.T. Tricks, and Tricks, in his employer’s archive, he thought it would be good for a laugh and maybe help teach his cat something. But the type of tricks this book includes are more alchemical than entertaining. After an explosion, he and his fiancée, Alana Kym, and their cat, Purloin, have their lives altered forever as a new world of magic and mysteries unveils itself before them. With every discovery, more questions arise, and
hints at a darker destiny unfurl.

What changes did the accident force upon them?

How does their employer, Wonderland Pharmaceuticals, tie into this?

And most important of all, did that cat just talk?

Catatonic is a tale that is a must-read for cat lovers and fantasy lovers alike. Full of humor, groan-inducing puns, and feline hijinks.

By the end of this fast-paced story, you’ll never look at your cat the same way ever again.

(Transparency: This review was commissioned by the author, however this does not at all affect my rating)

I really, really liked this book. 4.25 stars.

This is one of those hidden gem books. Its so quirky and SO funny.

Our main character is Marcus whos just living his life with his fiance and cat. He works in the basement of a big company, is the only employee who works in the basement, and one day comes across a book that doesn't seem to belong there or anywhere. And this starts a whole wild chain of events.

First, i love how we start the book at a police station where marcus, his fiance, and their cat are all being questioned and its this hilarious "bet youre wondering how we got here" type opener. I am admittedly biased though, i just really fucking love cats.

Marcus comes to realize that this book hes come across, is magical. And I LOVE magical books. What ensues is indeed a bunch of misadventures that are humorous but also, while you're laughing at the fact that marcus literally is using puns to make magic work, you're concerned for him and his fiance. And their cat. Because some powerful people are involved with whatever magical shit is going on.

Equal parts humorous an magical, and with a great cast of characters, i hardly have any complaints about this book. My only one thats worth mentioning is that I felt like this stalled pretty hard in the middle, where we could've kept up the pace, and it felt a bit like we were doing the same scene over and over there until the baddies show up. The middle had a lot of, try magic experiment, it goes weirdly, they examine the effects. I couldve used a bit more stakes there. But, other than that, this is a great, funny, short read that i especially recommend for cat lovers. The cat won my heart. He didnt have to try, and he likely doesnt want it, but damn it he won it!

I'm a fan of humor books, so when the author offered me a review copy of this one, I was happy to accept!

The tone is spot on for the genre. The protagonist is that kind of loveable dumbass where he's consistently making stupid decision... but they make the fun speculative stuff happen, so you can forgive him for it. I also love how much he likes having a cat. Don't know what that does it for me, but it does.

The plot of the book feels pretty spare. It feels like a singular book was split up. While there is a climactic scene near the end, it doesn't feel like a complete book in itself. I know it's part of a series, but each installment in a series should still maintain it's own kind of completeness. The spare feeling is also amplified by the lack of details in the magic system. Despite the entire book being centered around what is effectively modern alchemy, it does very little to explain what is actually being mixed. And this being a humor book, you could have a lot of fun with what weird household ingredients are being used in various potions.

The human/cat dynamic is spot on. Purloin is hands down the best character in the entire book and a talking cat is always the height of any story. I would like to see some development in the relationship between Alana and Purloin later on, though.

What little of the alchemy mechanics I could see (mostly the magical properties of the book and pun-based spells), I did enjoy. They kept up with the absurdism and humor with over the top reactions. But, again, I wish there'd been more details to it. I know that hard vs. soft magic systems is a whole discussion in itself, but it felt like there was way too much focus on the potion mixing for there to not be details.

All in all, it's a fairly light and really quick read. A little mind-bendy at points, but it doesn't dwell on it too much. A great pick for anyone looking for something with a dash of absurdity.

This was a really cute, fun, weird book. Highly recommend for cat people who don't mind a sci-fi magic mashup.
I thought the narration style was quite distinctive, though it could get a bit dull at times. I can forgive some of the oddities of the line-to-line writing for how creative some of the stuff here was, and the heart warming cat-human bonding moments. I love Purloin.

I am eager for a bit more explanation of all this going on in the book- I get there should be a sequel to it, but I will say it felt a bit incomplete in terms of just having some idea what on earth is going on.

Also, wow could I relate to the MC and his room of 14000 past hobbies 😬😬😬
I've just accepted that this is how I am

It all starts with a slow day at work when the boss comes in and turns everything upside down-- relatable, right? Well, only for a little while! Marcus's day gets a little weirder minute by minute until he realizes things have really gone off the rails. Add in a confused but supportive girlfriend and a sassy cat and you've got yourself the start of an adventure.

A nice start to story (series? It's Book 1!) that seems sure to have some more unexpected twists ahead.

My first DNF of the year, unfortunately. It's just too slow-paced... it took me three days to get 35% in, and I'm not even sure what the plot is meant to be still. Also, the typo in the title bothers me way more than it should. It's unfortunate, but I'm setting this one down.

Marcus’ Misadventures is a quirky, quick read about a man, his cat, and his penchant for spell craft and magic through puns.

description

Marcus’ Misadventures is a fun and quirky read where one man becomes a mage and uses magic with…unprecedented results.

Storytelling
Moore’s storytelling is quick and to the point but only adds to the novel’s enjoyment. Marcus and his girlfriend work in different sectors of their company. His girlfriend is a brilliant, pretty, and athletic scientist, while Marcus’ works in the archives depart all by his lonesome.

It is there that he discovers a text with some chemistry in it. His curiosity gets the better of him, and he takes the book home with his girlfriend and does an experiment, and poof! They all get knocked out, and suddenly, people call Marcus Magus. He can do magic around puns, his cat can transform, and his girlfriend turns into Wonder Woman.

I love the puns, each and every one of them. And they make the story fun and engaging. I loved how the characters had a relationship and how Moore was able to give a voice to his cat as well. These characters lip up the pages.

Final Thoughts
Marcus’ Misadventures is a quick read full of fun puns and action.
