Emma Hubbard is house-sitting for her aunt, far out in the country. But the remnants of the past—the past she is determined to forget—threatens to catch up with her, on Hallowe’en night. In the deadliest of ways…
Note: This book is the prequel of one of the characters in Jack’s Bay, in the Delta North Team Series. It takes place before the DNT is formed. You read about Emma —the unofficial guardian of Jack’s Bay—and loved her in Real Hero. Here is part of her story, and why she cares so much about being there when someone needs a hand…including the Delta North Team men.
Amazon bestselling author Susan Saxx has escaped into books since she was in kindergarten, and sees no reason to stop that nefarious activity. Only now she loves crafting tales of sass, suspense and heart that keep readers guessing--and up all night! She is well-known for her sexy, small town heroes, be they the special ops soldiers of Delta North Team, or the Men of Refuge Bay.
When she’s not writing (both male/female and male/male romance), she loves to binge-watch Netflix, exercise (within reason), dream of cottage life and endless supplies of dark chocolate. Oh, and she also caters to the whims of her feline companions--pretty much all day long.
A big thank you to my GR friend Susan, who also happens to be the author of this short story, who came galloping to my rescue when I needed a short story to read on New Years Eve to complete my 2021 Reading Challenge.
And here is my completely unbiased review.
Now some of my GR friends will know that "Romance" is not really a genre I read a great deal of , and I have to say not for any macho he-man reason, just because its not my scene (likewise so many of the classics I have found to my utter chagrin, are also not "my scene", am I such a lightweight ? ) Anyway I was a little concerned as this wonderfully short novella is a prequel to what sounds suspiciously like a "romance" series to me ha ha. But in Susan's defence when she falteringly suggested this story as a way of completing my challenge, I have to say it really isn't romance at all, if anything, the opposite. This story centres on Emma Hubbard, a survivor of an abusive **** (rude word redacted) of a husband who we discover has just escaped from jail. Staying in her Aunt's house over Halloween, she becomes convinced her ex is out for revenge in the form of her murder, and boy does the suspense ratchet up. The story moves through creepy jack-o-lanterns (is that correct ?) and poisonous vile weeds appearing throughout the house, before climaxing with a door knob slowly turning in front of her eyes.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, the descriptions and the suspense, and especially the outcome (ha ! )
Thanks again Susan, Happy New Year to you and all my GR friends.
Wow! It's a good thing this was so short because I held my breath through the whole thing. It's a great Halloween sitting around the campfire type of story. I can't wait for more!
The Escape is a very short, Halloween story packed full of suspense. The tension is palpable from the very first sentence and continues right to the end. A perfect read for Halloween or any time of year.
