After the death of Barqa's abusive mother, Mirr, she and her sisters have to give up any future they might have wanted for themselves, and Bond their mother's mates before the males die of withdrawal.

Or that was the plan.

Tirra and Senri, Barqa's older sisters, are forming loving, succesful Bonds with the males they've divided amongst themselves. Only Barqa, the baby, fails, when her two males choose each other over her.

She's distraught. She wanted to prove herself. She wanted to pull her own weight. She wanted to be as strong as her sisters, not make them sacrifice while she gets away with doing nothing. She's sick of being coddled and spoiled. She doesn't want to be the lucky one anymore.

Which is why she refuses to give in to Sarris, the beautiful, funny male untouched by Mirr who swears he wants Barqa as his Queen. He's the only male - the only person - in the tribe who isn't broken and scarred, and Barqa can't help but want him. Anyone would. But Barqa can't settle down with the male of her dreams, when her sisters have given up everything, can she?

This is a 27,000 word novella that features an alien/alien romance. This novella follows on from Krol's Goddess, Book 5 in the main Gandry/Ruth & Gron series, and is the sequel to 'Tirra' and 'Senri', which should be read first for the best enjoyment.

Adorable

This was the perfect way to end (hopefully only for now) the Gandry series. It was super sweet and Sarret was just adorable. He made this such a light-hearted read and you could really relate to how Barqa felt growing into the Queen she was destined to be. It was a wonderful nod back to the original Ruth and Gron characters love story, how wrapped up in each other they were and how they were happy to break the norms of their culture to stay true to their love. Beautiful.

I liked Barqa's story. She was a kind young woman, who was barely old enough to be considered an adult Gandry Queen. Her older sister Tirra assigned the two youngest of their mother's mates for Barqa to save with Bonding them. She was doing her best, taking care of them while they stayed in her cave, feeding them and trying to get closer to them, but they were sleeping most of the time and when they were awake they didn't talk to her much. She was worried and frustrated by the lack of progress, because their older sisters were doing much better than she was making her feel not good enough and too immature to be of any help to her tribe. The young male Serris, who her mother brought to the tribe with a plan of taking as the newest mate before she vanished, made Barqa's head spin. He was funny, playful and determined to gain her favor. She didn't want to like him, because he wasn't in need of Bonding and the other two were dying without it, but she couldn't help herself. When Barqa caught the two weak males fucking in her cave she was shocked and hurt by their rejection. She was feeling bad enough with thinking that she was just doing something wrong, but seeing that they didn't find her a good enough Queen to be Bonded to made her insecurities grow.
Her romance with Serris was very sweet, but I hoped that they would be more creative later ;) They were the only proper Gandry mates in this series, and it felt a bit meh. The later mention that she was thinking of taking more mates was a bit shitty too, it felt like she would if she found any interesting ones and was monogamous only because she didn't, not because of her love and dedication to Serris.

Young virgin Barqa is a victim of circumstance. If she doesn’t have sex with her step-fathers they’re going to DIE. Armed only with a theoretical knowledge of how to wank a man off, will she be able to pull this one off in time? No, as it turns out. But that’s ok because they’re perfectly capable of sorting things out between themselves, if you take my meaning. But without her family’s help how will poor Barqa effect her transformation into a sex kitten? Well, as Obi Wan Kenobi said to Luke in a private moment, “there are always alternatives to incest”.

Rather a sweet story, which should please some in the audience. I’m just here for the sexual perversion. Trigger warning: the story explores themes of personal growth and fulfilment in a liberal, fostering society and may be too much for some bigots.

This small novella series was a nice addition from Gron and Ruth's series. I enjoyed the Grandry's perspective, and to see then being romantic with one another without the traditional human ways, the biggest one being no kissing, still managed to be sweet.

I enjoyed this story as much as the first two, however my only complaint would be i wish Lancaster had focused on the homosexual romance in this one a bit more. Or even just made one more novella involving the two boys. That would have been more intriguing to read to me then a standard romance, simply because it's almost taboo to the Grandry. How sweet would it have been to read about the two males realizing all they needed was each other to live. Idk kind of a missed opportunity in my opinion. But still a good read overall.

Barqa hates feeling innocent, spoiled and inadequate. She tries talking about it with her sisters, but it's hard because she doesn't want to show any weakness. Talking with her father helps some.
It takes her a while to accept Serris' feelings and allow herself to return them. But once she decides to take what she wants, she finally finds happiness.

Interesting short

This moves on to the youngest sister in the series. It's interesting and short. It actually has some decent plot ideas despite the length.

This didn’t do it for me at all. I love the books with Ruth and gang, but I just couldn’t get into this one.
