While packing his belongings after a world-shattering break-up, a man is sucked into his record player, thrown back in time, and forced to relive various moments of his life, each specific to a song on the record. The man struggles to come to terms with his relationship, fatherhood, and who he will be once the record finally stops spinning.
I'm not a huge comic book/graphic novel sort of person, but there's a few series out there that I enjoy. This is right up there with them, and I'm definitely looking forward to more of what these two bring to the table.
My only regret is buying digital, and might have to see if physical ones are available yet!
I loved it! "Show me the pee stick" had me rolling, and then the feels hit. There is some descriptive text at the beginning that was so, so, SO good! It slowed a bit with the scene with a group of people but then picked back up. The art is mesmerizing.
This is a raw with a journey where the author is baring a lot of emotion and development, and sharing how outside elements help us move on, in a very creative way.
On the non feels side, the art has that MTV vibe and I love the nods to the online writing community (don’t make it weird!).
Well this was one hell of a beautifully written, heart wrenching, and honest piece of work. It was romantic and tragic, but also hopeful and sweet. Be prepared to feel feelings, because this story is gonna make you whether you like it or not, but you'll like it, cause that is what good art does. So buy it, read it, feel it, and then go watch their podcast cause these guys are really cool dudes.
I never expected a comic book to bring me to tears, and honestly, it feels almost wrong to label this work of art as a "comic" — especially since there's nothing really funny about it. From the beautiful, poetic writing style to the detailed, immersive drawings, I found every aspect of this book to be deeply moving. As someone who doesn't typically read comics, I'm glad I picked this one up. It is so worth the read. Just be sure to have a box of tissues ready for all the tears you'll undoubtedly shed.
In Play It Again, the reader follows the protagonist as he unwillingly journeys through the story of his shattered love song, stopping at watershed moments, each waypost marked by a song he associates with it. Colored in muted tones that effectively bring to mind the dreamlike quality memory so often carries, this searing tale ends with a beginning, as the protagonist takes his first painful steps into his future. The book is beautifully done, the visual art and the written word acting in perfect balance to bring the story to life.
Who among us has not been in a similar situation? You? Lucky dog.
A short but heart-tugging read. For a book about a break-up, it’s surprisingly friendly. I think I would have written a much angrier book if I had gone through this kind of split (and with a kid…yikes). I hope this story expands at some point. I’m sure there’s a lot more story to tell.
This emotional gem wrings more meaning from its sparse telling than most books do. That it is a labor of love is evident from the start. Anyone who has been surprised when the love of their life turned to ashes will find this tale hauntingly familiar and oddly comforting.
When I say I wasn’t ready, bow howdy is that the understatement of the century!!! The beautiful metaphors, the emotional response the story elicited from me, the stages of grief I had to go through to finish this. Thank you for writing this, and thank you for sharing such a vulnerable heart breaking reality with us readers <3
Both the artwork and the writing do an incredible job of capturing the raw emotion that we all experience at some point in life. This book reminds us that most days are just days but some leave indelible marks on us.
Heartfelt, vulnerable and immensely relatable. Not only is this story beautifully written, the art is a perfect match for it. The colors set the tone and mood. I can’t recommend this enough.
A beautiful, heart-wrenching graphic novel. It is wonderfully illustrated with a very wistful, poignant storyline that will stick with you long afterwards. I really loved it!
What a phenomenal story! First of all, awesome artwork! The art was so moving, it felt like I was watching one of my evening cartoon and the motions felt so real! Secondly, the story was not only heartbreaking but also moving! So realistic with a touch of fantasy! I can't wait for the next one!
