Award-winning archaeologists and New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear bring us a gripping disaster thriller.
The seas flood their banks. Storms devastate entire continents. Fires envelop the world in darkness. The collapse begins…
Anthropologist Anika French makes an explosive discovery: due to climate change, our world is threatened with collapse in just a few years, and humanity will perish. Anika’s committee chair published her work under his own name, now powerful people will do anything to obtain Anika’s statistical program for their own use.
With murder, kidnapping, extortion, and assassination on every side, Dr. Maureen Cole, a team of specialists, and bodyguard Skip Murphy will do everything in their power to keep Anika safe as they struggle with the implications of Anika’s work. For once the “fracture event” occurs, Anika’s model predicts the end of the world – and dark powers are already testing the model with devastating results.
Ultimately, it will be up to Skip, Maureen, and Anika as a deadly showdown in the Alps will determine who will profit from the destruction of civilization.
My professional life began in the dark basement of the Museum of Cultural History in Los Angeles, where I was cataloguing three-hundred-year-old Guatemalan saint carvings. I quit this fascinating job and moved to Wyoming to work for the U.S. Department of the Interior as a historian and archaeologist. When I finally understood the error of my ways I moved to Wyoming and started writing books. Since then, I've authored or co-authored 54 novels and around 200 non-fiction publications.
I love writing. And buffalo. And hiking the wilds of Wyoming's backcountry.
I'm married (until he comes to his senses) to W. Michael Gear, the novelist and my co-author, and we live at the edge of the Wind River Indian Reservation in the Owl Creek mountains of Wyoming. We're contented watching buffalo and writing books.
I really enjoyed this thriller about a scientific model that could be used to create a 'fracture event' that would cause society to disintegrate into anarchy. Very exciting reading, like a good spy novel.
Very solid 'near-collapse-of-civilization' novel that lays out fictionally what could well take place in reality. Intriguing, well-written, with keep-you-guessing tension and enough action for the most ardent of thriller fans. Don't let the post-apocalypse vibe from the cover dissuade you (this isn't YA!) from reading this modern espionage-style adventure. Given a free arc as part of the publisher's book club in exchange for a candid review. I liked it and will read more from these authors. (Forgot to post this review on Goodreads after I read it! This same review is up on Amazon.)
I enjoy this audiobook. To be honest I really enjoy the pacing and characterization. There were plenty of characters for a thriller and they were all quite different. There was growth in all our main characters and even the evil characters/organization were not bland but had purposes. If I Have a complain or two, there's some stuff I didn't find that were developed. First of all, is the all work she done that could predict the fall of humanity. It's quite unrealistic to be honest, although not at all unfeasible. I mean, you can predict elections or markets and such but not particular situations like the one they try to show here on this book. But that's a minor stuff because the way it was written and such was very good. All women were sexy as fuck (quite literally) and I've been seen that criticism in other novels. I don't care about that. After this, I've bought several of their novels, including the people of america and one other duology. They really got me a good impression. The other thing I didn't enjoy was the ending. I really thought it was too fast and basically he put some characters talking about themselves about x and y happening. Telling not showing or something like that? :P
I enjoy the thriller ride, the explanations about the fragility of society and the all parties involved
Fracture Event by Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear I have been waiting of this to come out since I first heard about extended stories of Maureen and Dusty. It was sad that until now it was only in German. Hopefully the publication of this will allow us to see the prior story with these two beloved characters. First off this book is fast paced and had more shooting, and stunts than a modern Marvel flick. Okay that was a joke, but it is an espionage novel at its heart. The idea of Collapse theory in Archeology and Anthropology is not a new concept, this books brings a what if, to this line of thinking. If we could use the predictions, and scattered evidence of the collapse of nations to predict the future, could we put it to good use? Many people are realizing in this post-Covid modern world that societies are more interconnected than ever before. Would you be able to save a collapsing nation if you know the triggers? This novel shows the unfortunate human nature to this idea, information is not always used for the best purposes. Come and enjoy the ride with this fast paced, action story, with an anthropological bases. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Michael and Kathleen for reminding us not only that the world is interconnected but that we are all vulnerable to something even if we don't know about it.

How will the world end, and who or what will be the one that causes it?
Anthropologist Anika French has been working a long time on a model to discover the possible causes and future events that could begin the collapse of the world. This was the model used as her dissertation to obtain her doctorate. As a student, she had been working with her professor, but for years he has been stealing her work and publishing it under his name. When out of the blue he comes to her and offers for her to take his position as a professor at the college, but also to begin working under him and continue the research on her model, she figures that something is wrong! But when she is called to the main office, she is put on the spot, leaving her no option to refuse the position, besides she realizes that it will allow her to continue her research.
Her work is to understand what will cause, what she has termed as a Fracture Event that will cause the collapse of the entire world. When the CIA comes to her and whisks her away to their undercover facility to work with other scientists, she realized that she was in trouble. She also finds out that as her committee chair, he has done it again, published her model under his name. Now working under the threat of other powerful people that she knows will do anything to get their hands on her work, she strives to find the answers. Unfortunately, that day arrived, and she is kidnapped, and she knows that things will get even worse for her.
Join Anika, her protector, Skip, and friend Maureen as they head for a deadly ending in the Alps for her escape…
What did I like? OMG, this is so interesting, fast-paced, and intriguing. I found the storyline so fascinating and spellbinding. The plot shows that the authors certainly know their business and can craft this amazing read that will hold your attention.
What will you like? Intrigue, assassins, corruption, mystery, gun battles, and so much going on that I don’t have enough room here to describe. The characters are awe-inspiring, giving the reader the best and worst of humanity. We know that the world is filled with people that will do anything to come out on top, be the best, richest, most powerful and this book shows us that world. But on the other hand, we know that there are people out there that will do anything to protect, whether it is another person or the world. In this book, the authors give us a glimpse of both sides of the coin. The storyline takes a page out of history, shows us what can be done with it to predict what the future will hold, and then gives us this amazing plot that will make you wonder how much of it is true. Don’t miss the exciting read that will have you holding your breath. Kathleen and Michael Gear give us “Fracture Event,” which is Available NOW!!!
I loved this book. I had read Dissolution and loved that story. I hadn't read any of the Gear's other work. My husband brought this one home to read himself. I asked for it once he finished it. I'm glad that I did. I liked almost all of the characters. Especially Anika. Skip, too. Evidently the Gears have an uncanny way of making their works of fiction seem all too real. Unfortunately, I could see this happening. I have often thought we have such tunnel vision in this present time that we never really see the big picture. We certainly do not consider the consequences of the things that we do. And of course, anything that is developed for good can be used/exploited for evil purposes. It is scary because every country would want the model in order to take down their enemies. It also gives you the upper hand, or the most power, if you have the model...or something like it. It reminded me of the quest for nuclear weapons. They are bad because of the mass destruction they can cause, etc. However, most countries want them because it levels the playing field, I suppose. The country that has the greatest power to destroy is the country with the greatest power. Of course, it is more than simply governments that would want something like this. There are people who seek this type of power, too. Once they got to using the model to release viruses targeted to specific haplogroups, I found that the scariest of all. One thing the Gears do so marvelously is show how easy it would be to topple the world as we know it. Everything is so connected that taking out one thing has a domino effect on economies. Our world as we know it is unsustainable. Something will happen, it has to. Will it be something like this that ends it or changes it? I hope there will be a sequel to this as I would love to know what Anika does and if she was able to figure out how to stop the virus. The plots that authors imagine have an uncanny way of happening. Something to think about.
My favorite kind of fiction! The kind that leaves me thinking maybe it isn’t all made up! Combining current topics with their knowledge of the past and extrapolating it out to a believable and often chilling conclusion is one of the things the Gears do so well. And, they’ve done it again with this book! Fracture Event is fast paced but not frantic and technical without losing me in the details. Give this book a shot! But, don’t hold it against me if you find your beliefs about the future are complicated and maybe even a bit, er…..fractured!
This deeply thoughtful tale of the dangers of complete global interconnection was a serious page Turner with well conceived characters and a wealth of theoretical ideas to speak further thinking. Especially timely, it made me really absorb all the ways our consumer society is on a very tenuous balance. Academics are not going to be much of a help. A very small localized occurrence can bring it all down easily. All we have built can be wiped away in a heartbeat. Recommended.
Another excellent and timely book from Kathleen O'Neal Gear. The entire concept of statistical modeling based upon human emotion was so interesting...and truly frightening. Science and emotion clashing -- exactly what we see on a daily basis from our so-called leaders. Can not recommend this book enough!
Having enjoyed this team's archeo-thrillers, I decided to give Dissolution a chance and was impressed. Fracture event was icing on the cake. The Geers have proven they're ability to write in different genre. A little more polish, and they will be competing with the best in techno-thrillers.
Anika is a brilliant anthropology PhD student at U of Wyo. Her advisor is a scum who steals her ground-breaking model and writes a paper based on it. Comes to the attention of the US Govt, and the Chinese and a very wealthy bad guy.
Off we go on a rip roaring ride to try to save the world.
The premise is that the interconnectivedness of the world can be exploited, kinda like jenga
Always the best writing one could read, the authors spinning a realistic fact based story that will intrigue and keep you booked to the last page and leave you wanting for more.
Non-stop action, devilishly realistic plot scenarios, and deep characters with fantastic detailing make this a read in one evening book. It's addictive!
Audiobook. Archaeologist and Anthropologist build models to discover why ancient civilizations collapsed. A paper on the method was printed in error. Now all kinds of countries want the programmers to use on modern societies! CIA, FBI, DOD, everybody trying to save the world! Good read!
This was an intriguing book about how anthropology and statistics can combinantly cause the destruction of all humanity...or possibly save it. I love anything that combines professors, spies, motorcycle chases, and action. It sounds implausible here but it really does all work well in the book.

Amazing, intriguing, and on-the-seat-of-your pants action thriller! Michael does such an amazing job, not only with Native American historical fiction (which is where I first discovered him), but in modern fiction that addresses the issues our society is facing today! Loved this book (as well as everything else he and Kathy have ever written)! :)
