The fairytales had it wrong. Robin Hood was a woman.
Coming home from war wasn't what Robyn expected. Relegated as lady of the manor, with the threat of an arranged marriage to the very man trying to steal her land, she refuses to be sidelined.
When the duke's men accost a shifter family in the woods, she decides to take matters into her own hands. Robyn joins the fray and recieves help from an unlikely source. A Dragon. But no good deed goes unpunished.
She never meant to become a hooded rogue wanted by the very man intent on securing her as his wife, nor falling for the rakish dragon king determined to whisk her away to his lair.
Trapped between two worlds, Robyn has to make a difficult choice. Duty and honor, or love and family.
The King of Thieves? He was a myth. The Queen of Thieves? She became a legend.

Another solid reimagining in this series. Not a gender swap, so much as a mash up of characters. So lovely to see Damien get a story of his own. The chemistry between him and Robyn is fantastic. Ms Kay is amazing at making the romance feel real while keeping it clean. I always come away much more emotionally invested in her characters than some others.
I am loving the twisted kingdoms series and this latest addition is so so good! Robyn Hood is in fact a woman and totally kicks ass! It’s a twisted retelling that draws you in and holds on tight as we watch Robyn battle the thieves and get injured. Rescued by a dragon shifter Damien who nurses her back to health, their story is full of action, adventure, loyalty, family, romance and so much more. One thing I also love about this is that we also get to see old friends from other books. I absolutely love it!
Oh goodness, this author has just rocked my dragon shifter loving, romantasy obsessed world... 🤯🤯😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰. Will leave a longer review when my brain cells can form a thought again 😂
Thoroughly enjoyed the unique perspective of this retelling of Robin Hood. The sheriff is truly evil yet not the main evil of this tale. Characters from other tales of this kingdom have integral supporting roles in this tale. And brave Robin faces much more than the “take from the rich and give to the poor” storyline. Thus is so well written I fell into the abyss and lost track of time, just the way I like it! An easy thumbs up recommend! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
Robyn’s just returned home from the war, and the state of her town is far worse than when she left. As the lady of the manor, Robyn must make some difficult decisions in order to save her people. She must also deal with the idea of an arranged marriage to the very man hurting her people. Despite all of this, Robyn stays strong, refusing to let herself be pushed to the side.
When the Duke’s men take things one step too far, Robyn has no choice but to take matters into her own hands. With the help of a shocking and unlikely ally, a dragon, she becomes a vigilante known as “The Hood.” Torn between her duty to her people and her feelings for the charismatic dragon shifter, Robyn must make difficult choices in order to save everyone she cares about.
Oh my gosh, I am completely, utterly enthralled by this world and this series!!! The author has created such a complex, unique world with the Twisted Kingdoms series, and I can’t help but keep wanting to come back for more!!! I especially loved this twist on Robin Hood and Mulan - such a fun combination! Robyn is definitely the kind of heroine I want to be. She’s brave and sassy, yes, but she’s also incredibly smart. She knows when to be bold, and when to be demure.
Robyn so easily flits between the role of “The Hood” and of Lady Marian Lochslee, and I admire her for it. I also loved her interactions with Damien, the dragon king. Damien is arrogant, brave, and reckless, but he is also incredibly loyal to those he cares for. And I loved h lo ow fiercely protective he was of Robyn. They had a sort of fiery chemistry that became harder and harder to ignore, and I loved watching their relationship develop over the course of the novel. I highly recommend!!!
Thank you to the author and BOMM for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I saw that this was a gender swapped retelling of Robin Hood and I just couldn’t pass it up! This is the fifth book in a series, but can be read as a stand-alone (which is what I did).
Robyn’s love for her family and devotion to her people is extremely admirable. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for them, including marry a slimy, disgusting Duke 🤢 There’s adventure, a blossoming romance, and a hot dragon shifter (what more do you need?!). Damien was my favorite character in the book, so I’d love to get to know him better, and I really want to read Pyre and Tempest’s story, since they seem like really fun characters too!
Overall I liked the book, but thought that it needed a little bit more of everything. There were some missed opportunities for great adventures (like the jail breakout), and getting to know the Merry Men better, and having the romance evolve just a bit more (I don’t need smut, but I just wish we saw more of their interactions and felt more tension between them).
Also, I unfortunately didn’t really feel a strong connection to any of the characters and sometimes got a little confused with all of the different POVs (especially the ones that you were really supposed to get to know in the previous books). I wish I had read the rest of the series first so that I really understood everything that was going on. I felt like I was missing something, and that something was the other four books before this. I definitely want to go back and read them to get a better feel for this one!
Eh, I expected way better from this one. After loving Court of Dragons, I was super excited to pick up another Kay book. But then the controversy surrounding her popped up. I still picked this one up because I had a copy, but I don't plan to continue her books.
The biggest problem with this one was that it was almost good. It was almost addicting. Damien and Robyn were almost amazing together. It had potential, but none of it was reached.
And really, I think most of that loss is because of the pacing. We started off super strong with interactions between Damien and Robyn, but then they spent almost the entire book apart. I wanted romance and angst, not some odd Robin Hood plot. I know this is a retelling, but I wanted fantasy romance. Despite my high hopes, this was a rather disappointing read.
Thanks to Book of Matches Media for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review
I haven't read the other books in the series so I can tell you that it works well as a stand alone where you really don't need to read the other stories first, but I can see how reading the series in order will give you a much better backstory for many of the characters. I totally understood what was going on from the start and didn't feel lost and found that I wanted to like it, but it didn't quite work great for me. I love the idea of a female Robin Hood character but there were a lot of pieces that were missing or just didn't quite fit.
I will note that there are a few scenes where the FMC is basically told she is going to be sexually assaulted repeatedly for the rest of her life by two different men and that she will wish she was dead after what they'll be doing to her. They don't go into specifics, but there isn't a question that they're threatening her with sexual violence. This made sense for the characters and the scene, but it was enough that I wanted to note it.
Don't worry The Hood is here. The fifth book in the Twisted Kingdoms series is a Robin Hood meets Mulan retelling and this time Robin is a girl. Robyn Lochslee is actually Lady Marien Robyn Lochslee that is and she's impersonating her twin brother John in the Royal army and when she returns home it's to devastation and corruption and Robyn feels like it's her duty to stop it. Here comes the Hood.
I love how interconnected this series is, we first hear of Robyn in a precious Twisted Kingdoms book, now it's her turn. Can you imagine the strength she has to impersonate a male in the army in a world that views women as less, women who can't hold property or have any real power? However Robyn can keep up with the guys, she is darn good with a bow and arrow and isn't a bad fighter. She does it all not to prove something, or recognition but for love. She does it because her twin brother has always been sickly, to her family to keep their lands, and to protect her people from the dastardly Duke Merjeri and his evil son Ruslan. Yes, Robyn is all kinds of strong, completely selfless has a great sense of duty, and has the biggest heart, seeing everyone from shifters, to servants, to highborn as equals. Taking from greedy vile men and giving to those in need.
While she may still from the rich and takes from the poor she has also stolen a certain dragon's heart. Remember when I said that the story was interconnected, well Damien, the Dragon King that we met in the second book is back and it's his turn to go on a journey and find love. Who knew dragons could be so dramatic, Damien is still the flirtatious and fierce Dragon so you can imagine how things go when he and Robyn get together. They may clash at first but things evolve into something a whole lot more. I liked the Dragon before and I like him even more now. Damien is possessive and protective and Robyn is fierce, defiant, and protective. Damien loves all of Robyn's fiercest qualities, supports her in whatever crazy thing she wants, and without a doubt has her back. Robyn and Damien make quite the pair.
There are more characters that crossover. Tempest and Pyre are back and even have their own chapter, not to mention Gustav (aka the Sheriff) is the lord's lackey who was causing trouble in the previous books is causing trouble again. Speaking of Lord Merjeri he is really a supervillain. Questionable deaths, attacks, intimidation, a drug ring, and is most definitely involved in some other criminal activities. Ruslan is the spawn of the Devil, rarely have I felt so much hate towards a character. His callousness, greedy, and superiority complex, is just the tip of the iceberg of what's wrong with him, and what's scarier is that Gustav seems to be a whole lot worse just without the power.
The Hood was a fantastic Robin Hood retelling, a great adventure with high stakes, more fierce women, and daring romance. I loved it and I'm so glad that Robyn and Damien got their HEA. However, things aren't done in Heimserya yet, more key players are added to the board. Looks like the next retelling is gonna be good. In this book, we get to meet newcomer Scarlet and I give you one guess as to which fairytale character she is, here's a hint, Robyn isn't the only one with a hood. I for one can't wait for the next Twisted Kingdoms book.
The Hood was very fast paced which frankly is something I always look for because I lose interest easily. I also like the idea of a female Robin Hood which is sort of what this story is about. Robyn, our main character, is actually from the trilogy that comes before. So you do see some familiar faces - including Robyn's love interest - Damian who I always liked from the previous books. The writing is easy to follow and the chemistry is there between the two characters BUT (and now for some critique), it wasn't there "enough". The segments we get of Robyn and Damien are very few! And it's disappointing because I kept hoping for their romance to grow beyond maybe the 4 or 5 conversations they have the entire book. So there is hardly any romance at all which if you've read The Beast (Book 4) it's very surprising and a tad confusing as to why the book went this direction.
I've rated the trilogy and book 4, five stars up until this point because it help my attention. This one, not so much and it was arguably the one I was the most hyped for. It let me down because I feel like this story didn't really need a connection to the trilogy. It really would be nice to see it deviate in the future books quite significantly from the trilogies storyline. Doing so I think would fix those issues I did have with this book including some of the POV changes. I would still recommend it, but I would say read her trilogy and book 4 first so you get a real grasp of how awesome this series truly is. I wouldn't recommend you start with this book as a standalone, but I would recommend you read it and I will certainly read the next installment.
WOW! This was one hell of an outstanding retelling of Robin Hood (with a little bit of Mulan thrown in) that is done in an utterly unique and creative way. The phenomenal imagery, captivating world building and the unique characters had me totally swept away into a dark, twisted, suspenseful and action packed story. Robyn takes us on an explosive adventure that had me gripping my kindle tightly, shocked at what transpires on the pages, and falling head over heels in love with her and Damien. It was unputdownable!
Robyn is an amazing woman. She’s fierce, brave, strong and witty. She will do anything to protect those that she loves even if it means putting her life in danger every step of the way. Robyn is able to go head to head with most men and even one snarky dragon and come out on top!
Damien (who is a fierce dragon) has this instant need and desire to help and protect Robyn. This connection he has with her starts of on shaky ground but over the course of the story turns into something unexpected, undeniable and amazing. He maybe a snarky dragon but he will do whatever he can to help Robyn in her endeavors – which made my heart soar. These two are quite the unique pair. And I absolutely loved them both.
This is another brilliantly written story by this amazing author. It’s filled with action, suspense, murder, mystery, evil and corrupt players and a whole lot of heartwarming moments that will keep you completely captivated and highly entertained.
I loved this story so much and I can’t wait for the next Twisted Kingdoms adventure!
Perfect blend of a gender-flipped Robin Hood, & touch of Mulan, with an incorrigible dragon shifter
I truly love falling into Frost Kay's Twisted Kingdom world, she has this tendency to reach up and yank me into the story and hold me there until the very end. The Hood is no exception! I was fully enthralled, and became super cranky to have to stop and adult! I seriously would have read it in one sitting had I had the opportunity! This is easily one of my top 5 YA favorites of the year so far; I loved it! Elements of Mulan blended in perfectly to the gender-flipped Robin Hood retelling, with shifters, secret identities, danger, loyalty, found family, and slimy, despicable villains, this story had me wrapped up completely. Ahhh, Damien, the dragon shifter, he's such an exhibitionist, and a huge flirt! To see him brought to his knees by the selfless, bada$$ Robyn was fantastic! He showed his possessive, protective side, and became so much more! Robyn never knew what hit her! Then her having to decide what was best for her family, friends and others as opposed to what she truly wanted for herself for the first time was full of angst, and showed her character beautifully. I loved meeting Scarlett, and cannot wait to see what happens when grumpy old Brine finally meets her in the next book! That should be one wild ride and I am so here for it!
Note: The Hood is a standalone HEA, but if you've read The Beast, you will have met Robyn and Damien already. The books have cameos from previous book characters in this world, which to some may seem a bit choppy, but it's just switching POV's to keep a pulse on the underlying storyline. If you're a series reader, like to be in the know, and have the full background story, start with The Hunt. To just catch up on previous appearances of Robyn and Damien, then The Beast is a fabulous place to start. But you can absolutely read The Hood on its own.
My thanks to Frost Kay for the ARC. All opinions are my own, I decided to leave a review, and no compensation was received.
"If I love you, why should I let you go?" "Because that's the way love works. You can't force or trap love. It will die."
The Hood by Frost Kay (#5 in The Twisted Kingdoms series, can be read as a standalone) is a mixture of Robin Hood re-imagined with a bit of Mulan and shifters mixed in. YA romantic fantasy fairytale - retelling with mild steam.
Robyn is tough as nails and can fend for herself. She is brave and daring and of course beautiful to the core. Marian Robyn Loschlee is a daughter who can impersonate her dead brother and go to war just to keep her father from doing, she's a daughter who can live up to the expectations of her status as a Lady and marry a man she despised, just to protect her people from the worst of his selfish desires. Damien is a dragon shifter who can be a total alpha at times but is easily brought to his knees by Robyn. He would do anything for her, Damien was her shield. No sword could touch her. No arrow could pierce her. No challenge would be too much for her with him by his side, cause while she could stand almost anything, there were times when she was outnumbered, and at those times, Damien was there for her, to protect her. He doesn't hold her back in any way! HE IS A CINNAMON ROLL!
I absolutely loved their banter and Damien's humor!! The world setting was at its best, this was my first Frost Kay read and honestly? Her writing's so good that I surely am gonna read the other books in this series! And well Tempest and Pyre gives out TOTAL Feysand vibes!!!
So again, vehemently saying, JUST READ THE DAMNED BOOK!!
Ok so lets set the scene Frost Kay, Robyn Hood, and a fairytale retelling are three of my favorite things! I have been reading the Twisted Kingdoms series since it started and each book just makes this series better and better. There will be a few spoilers so if you like surprises go snag the book first.
I absolutely love Robin Hood, in this story we have Marien Robyn Lochslee, Robyn Hood is a female! And what a woman she is, she impersonates her brother in the Army. She comes home as you can imagine to devastation, and now she has to keep fighting and we have The Hood.
Damien, the dragon king is back, yes and amen. And we get so much more of him on his journey to find love. He is both fiercely protective and supportive of our Lady of the Hood.
I really love this series for so many reasons, the characters are real and relatable but we get our escape into beloved fairytales and its just all so well done. I also love how interwoven the books in this series are but fear not you can read each story as its own. It just makes the ride so much better to know who is who. Oh and lets not forget my favorite lady is back, we get a whole chapter with Temp and Pyre!
All that being said I really enjoy everything this author creates so I don't think you'll be disappointed and it is available on Kindle Unlimited! Happy reading!
I liked this one better then the Beast. Robyn and Damien were great together. I loved Damien and wanted more of him.
One thing I don’t know why the author put a part of Robyn in the book previous (Beast) and then copy and pasted it into this one. I kind of get it because they are supposed to be stand alone’s but why put the exact same thing it both books. It’s driving me crazy. Because she does it in all of them. So I just skip it since I already read it. I also don’t understand the timeline. She has a chapter that starts out 1 month later then the next says 2 and then 3. But then Robyn says something about the last 2 months of being the hood when but if you count it’s 6 months later. So that confused me.
I also that it was weird and stupid that it took Damien so long to tell Robyn that he is the dragon king. You’d think that because it’s a big part of his life and that he was in love with her he’d have said something earlier. Or had to go home for a little bit for a few things to take care of but it felt like he was one of those Dragons that have no responsibilities and can do whatever.
I did enjoy the book I’m just nitpicking at things.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The Hood is the 5th book in Frost Kay's Twisted Kingdoms series and I absolutely loved the combination of Robin Hood and Mulan. Right from the beginning, I could see the correlation that the author was going for with the Mulan aspect. As the story progresses forward the Robin Hood aspect makes itself known. I think that this book was probably my favorite of the ones that I've read recently. I love the characters in this book and how unique they are. Robyn is an engaging character and the author does an excellent job pulling me into this story from the very beginning. The line that really captured me was when the author says that Robyn's little brother lies. My curiosity was immediately piqued and my heartbroken at the same time. I had to know why and what happens. I absolutely ate this book up and I loved the back and forth throughout. I am a huge fan of retellings, especially when they are told well, and this book definitely fits that bill in my opinion. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.
"The fairytales had it wrong. Robin Hood was a woman."
Omgsh y'all this book is AH-MAZING! To me it's like a gender bent Robin Hood with a dash of Mulan and I'm so here for it! My tiny complaint is the first few ch were a lot. There were a ton of characters and countries and times mentioned and I had a hard time keeping them straight so I wish I'd read the first 2 books. (Although I can't wait to go back and read them now!!)
I love how Robyn has this amazing supportive family with morals. It was refreshing to read how much they loved each other! I love how Robyn didn't back down from a fight even if the odds were against her.
Damien is fabulous! I totally imagine him with the smoldering smirk. There's a lot of side characters but they all seem well fleshed out and I really need to read some of their stories cuz now I'm super invested! I ended up reading this in one sitting - I couldn't put it down!
This has adventure, fight scenes, shifters, romance, well developed bad guys, heists - pretty much all you could possibly want! I highly recommend this series!!!
A nice take on Robin Hood, this retelling shows a lot of action and drama. I love the way Robyn takes control of her life and does what she deems to be right for her family or her people irrespective of even if it’s wrong for her. She dons on the male outfit and does all she could. She’s strong, fierce, and determined.
If you are planning to read this book, I will suggest that you read the series in sequence. There are a lot of things overlapping which will confuse you a bit since you wouldn’t know what happened in the back books. I read this one without reading others and felt that gap in information and the world-building. The writing is very good but I wanted to see more of the interactions between the Dragon and Robyn.
The story goes pretty fast and we get to see only the main events but I walked more from it. A lot of time I thought how did they manage this or that. The characters are interesting and they are loyal to each other.
Robyn is one of my favorite Frost Kay characters, even though her devotion to her people and putting their needs above her own is something I could only ever hope to have. And DAMIEN has been a favorite of mine since his introduction in an earlier book trying to seduce Tempest and rile up Pyre. Plus, how could I not root for the dragon? This book has Robyn getting into loads of trouble and trying to do everything herself, as we've come to expect from her, but thank goodness she lets the big smoldering dragon and some other friends help her out. As always, the intertwining of characters from previous books is a Frost Kay specialty. This book was no exception. I'm hoping there's more to come in this world for Robyn, Damien, Tempest, Pyre, Ansette, Will, Brine, and all the others. I need more of them all.
The Hood is an interesting retelling of Robin Hood with elements from Mulan. When the war began and every family was ordered to send their sons to battle, Robyn goes in place of her deceased brother. She returns to her town to see her people getting extorted by the Duke.
She meets Damien, a dragon while returning home and he takes a liking to her. He helps Robyn and her friends take back the money extorted from her people under the persona of The Hood.
Damien became my favourite character. His character was witty and funny. He added charm to the story. I loved his banter with everyone.
Robyn is introduced as a strong character but she didn’t come off strong or smart in the story unfortunately. Her love for her people and the drive to protect them was admirable.
The pace was uneven and the time line kept jumping ahead a lot. The raids weren’t explained which felt like a let down.
The characters added charm to the story and made it enjoyable.
I love the world of the Twisted Kingdom that Frost Kay has created. In this story, we find Robyn Hood is not only female, she is a major badass. After fighting thieves in the forest who outnumbered her 6 to 1 while critically injured, she was on her way home from the war when she was rescued by Damien, a green dragon shifter. Damien knew immediately that she was different than any other humans he had known. Damien nursed her back to health completely unaware who she was. And this begins the adventures of Robyn, her merry men, and Damien against a duke who was robbing his people blind. What could go wrong? Besides everything? Buckle up and read this now. It’s THAT good!
I love the Twisted Kingdoms series so, so much!!!... every retelling is so brilliantly written, it sucked you in and won’t let you go until you finish and left you eager for more!!! 😍 Robyn and Damien love story #iseverything 😭❤ They learned from each other: she, to work with and trust her friends, she’s not alone... him, to be compassionate and not let his temper dictate his actions... they made each other grown into the best version of themselves, while falling for each other!!! 🤗🥰 Full of action, family, friendship, loyalty, romance, love... oh and, of course, crossover from our favorite characters, this new installment in this fantastic series is a #mustread!!! ❤ Now, I can't wait for Brine and Scarlet's story, I'm so excited!!! 🤩
The Hood is diffently an adult fairy tale - thank you Frost! I liked Robin Hood but never read Mulan - now I am going to have to read Mulan. Damien is back and I love that he found Robyn. She definitely gives him some crap. He deserves it by the way - dragon shifters can be slightly over protective and possessive. Robyn can take care of herself - well most of the time. Pyre and Tempest make a few appearance. Neither have changed. Brine also makes an appearance. Read Damien and Robyn's story and enjoy their adventure of taking out the evil dictater Ruslan and his evil friend Gustav. Meet Lady Marian/ Robin 3 best friends- Andrei, Pavel and Will. Three very interesting men. The next book in this series can not come out quick enough.
Frost Kay always does an amazing job at weaving a story of adventure, fun, and of course, a little romance with her fairy tale remakes. Her female protagonists are strong, and more importantly, they are real. I love their strength and 'take no crap from anyone' mentality (probably because I'm the opposite of that in real life). Kay combines that with an intriguing male character that leaves us wanting more for both of them. Now, I always enjoy a strong female character, but I enjoy seeing them find happiness in the end as well. Author Frost Kay won't leave you disappointed in her story of a strong heroine that deserves both her happily ever after with someone who truly sees the amazing person she is.
The Hood by Frost Kay was a good read! I enjoyed the book, and enjoyed getting to know the characters. I have not read any of the other ones in the series, but since this series is one that you can pick up at any time it didn’t hinder the book at all.
I enjoyed the two MC’s, and liked how the story played out. The play on Robin Hood I thought went well. I do enjoy gender swaps, and thought the author did a good job in this.
I would’ve loved to see more development romantically between Damien and Robyn. That’s just a personal preference of mine because I love me so romance!
I would definitely read other books in this series and recommend it to anyone that wants a nice quick, enjoyable read!
This book was a little slow to take off for me, but once I was able to give it the attention it deserved, I fell in love with the characters, the settings, and the story itself. Robyn was a strong, independent woman who realized that asking for help wasn't such a horrible thing. The sheriff and duke were horrible cretins and were wonderfully written. Damien was arrogant but not so much so as to be annoying.
I absolutely loved the way Frost Kay pulls in characters from several different tales. I adored the spin she put on the story: dragon shifters, kitsune, wolves, and others all living alongside humans.
This is the first Frost Kay book I've read, and it definitely won't be the last!
I love a good Frost Kay book. Her world building is like no other. I received a ARC in exchange for an honest review. Let me preface that I had not read any of the other books as this is can be read as a stand-alone. However, I wish I had read the previous books because this word is fascinating. I plan to read the earlier books. The main female character was bold and I loved her. The romance was unique. I love a good fairytale retelling. I gave it a four out of 5 as it was a little slow to read at first and I struggled to get into it but I think this may have been because I wasn’t familiar with the world. Wonderful book.
Really enjoyed the way this retelling unfolded with elements from both Robin Hood and Mulan that come to mind, paired with forbidden love and actions in a time where a woman had only so many ‘allowances’, made for a thrilling read.
Damien was my favourite character throughout with his alpha vibes, self confidence and awareness, and brooding personality.
Frost’s story telling is light hearted and humorous, complementing the darkness in this story and the world that has been portrayed. I haven’t yet read the other books in this series but am absolutely looking forward to devouring those to get the full picture!
