Aliens and Animals #1

The Alien's Zookeeper

Rate this book
The stars gave her a mate... and a rhino.
Tilly doesn't believe in aliens. At least, she didn't, until she gets abducted along with half the animals of her zoo. When you and your rhino are stuck in a cage on a spaceship, it's hard not to believe. One of them, an elf-eared female, seems ready to help her find a way back to Earth, but is that really what Tilly wants?

Bavalla's messed up big time. She wasn't supposed to abduct a sentient being, but now that she's face to face with a female who's not only intelligent but also very attractive, she has to figure out what to do. Telling the Captain would result in severe punishment, but how do you hide a human who's very intent on saving not just herself, but all her animals as well?

A fast-paced f/f romance with a strong human woman and a swoon-worthy alien female willing to give up everything for her mate. Part of the Aliens and Animals series.

I really enjoyed this novella, about an alien that accidently beams up a zookeeper as she is abducting animals from an Earth Zoo. Intrigue and fun ensues.

Alien Bavalla is in deep caca. She was just meant to get the animals on her list, not the alluring female human now ranting at her from the cell beside a giant armoured horned beast. Tilly is shocked, one moment she is sleeping next to Brie the Rhino, because she hadn't been feeling well (as you do) the next she's in a strange metal pod, with pink and blue humanoids looking at her!

Tilly is not impressed that her animals have been taken by these beings, and makes it known how upset she is about the whole thing. While Valla is desperately trying to keep her job and avoid the wrath of her boss and captain. But Tilly isn't going anywhere without her beloved animals, and Valla finds herself looking for solutions.

I loved their interactions. I have always been amused by curious alien stories, I guess because I relate in a lot of ways. Being neurodivergent the whole human-experience thing has often been fairly alien to me, and the reasons why we do the strange things we do has often been a bone of contention growing up. So I adored seeing both Valla and Tilly be open and curious with one another and their customs - that probably aren't as different as you'd think! Seeing their similarities and connection was sweet, and then a little heated too.

Because it's a novella it goes a little fast, and my one complaint was I had wished we got more time overall, and more chance for our couple to really get to know one another and spend time with them; getting to know Valla's homeworld etc.

But there is apparently set to be two more installments, as we get to know Valla's sisters, and their own interactions with earthlings who have strong ties to their animals. That was another thing I enjoyed about Tilly's character, is her obvious love and devotion to her animals.

All in all a very sweet, hot, cute, different novella that I would absolutely recommend for a fun light-hearted read!

A surprisingly well-done sci-fi despite the silly name and cheesy cover.

The story was written in dual perspective and was very non-human centric. There was a lot of charm using alien references to describe the human character. It worked, and it changed it up from many of the other sci-fi stories.

I am sad I didn't get more of the couple. The ending was quite quick, and the epilogue was meant to set up the next book. I hope this couple appears in future books, but I am also looking forward to the leads for book 2.

Highly recommend if you like sci-fi world building packaged in a lighter story.

I was in the mood for a lighthearted and fun read and on a whim decided to read this book that I bought a while ago. I am so glad I did as it was exactly the type of book I was in the mood for. I had so much fun reading this book and bought the next two books before I even finished this one.

The Alien's Zookeeper is a fast paced ff romance set in space. The plot is a bit of a twist on the alien abduction trope. Alien Bavalla is in control of the beam that abducts some zoo animals from Earth so her captain can sell the animals to sell to the highest bidder, but she accidentally beams up a human as well. Tilly is a human who is very dedicated to the animals she cares for at the zoo she works at. When she gets beamed up alongside her animals she's determined to save herself and the animals.

This book starts off right in the action when Tilly gets beamed up and the pace keeps going steadily with something happening to further the plot or romance in every scene. Bavalla and Tilly quickly grow closer and end up working together to save Tilly and her animals. I liked seeing their romance develop and while things developed quickly it was clear their feelings for each other ran deep and I could totally feel their romance. I thought they made for a great couple and I liked how open they both where about learning of the other and accepting behaviors and habits from the others culture. I liked reading about them.

I also liked how the animals play an important role in the story and how dedicated Tilly was to saving them. I liked how Tilly's reaction to being abducted felt genuine, she totally has a panic moment, but I also liked how she quickly accepted she got abducted and then focused on making sure she and her animals were safe. I liked how she quickly agreed to Valla's plan for the animals and how they fell in love along the way. I liked seeing Tilly though Valla's eyes and how alien some things looked to her, while through Tilly's eyes Valla is the alien. I thought the story was well written and it kept my attention throughout. I just wanted to keep reading as I was having so much fun with this story.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out there was quite some world building in this book. I liked seeing Tilly and Valla find out the differences between their species and there are some fun scenes where they realize things work differently on Earth than on Kyven. As well as the differences between their species, customs, technology and more. We get to hear a bit about alien animals as well as see some of the technology that the aliens have. I thought it all added to the story and enjoyed learning more about the Kyven. There is also the whole mating ceremony thing later in the book which was fun to read about and see how it all worked. It was quite the romantic scene.

To summarize: This was such a fun read. It's a fast paced and sweet ff romance story with plenty of animals as well. I thought the set up with a twist on the alien abduction trope was a fun and worked well here. I liked how we learn more about the alien species Kyven and how different they are from humans. There is plenty of world building to give a good feel for the Kyven, their customs, their technology and more. While the romance progressed quickly I felt the romance and was eager to see how they would make things work and save the animals. I liked how the romance was low on drama. I liked seeing how the plot played out and how Valla and Tilly got their happy ending. The ending has a set up for the next book and I am looking forward to reading that one!

This was a well done science fiction book. I am picky about books in this category and this one was a fun, short read for me. Characters were likable and the plot was entertaining. Looking forward to book 2 in the series as we got a little teaser in the epilogue in this one.

A co-write with Skye MacKinnon that I reviewed previously and it looks like it will be a fun series. A zealous zookeeper, a bored alien and animals make for a book with anxiety, humor, danger and romance. Lead characters Bavalla/Valla and Tilly together with a dastardly captain, a roaming tiger and eventual rampaging rhino all trapped on an alien spacecraft make for an interesting storyline which I thoroughly enjoyed. I looked forward to a HEA.

I rec'd a copy through Booksprout and this is an unbiased, voluntary review.

I’ve been on a DNF spree lately. Nothing seems to hold my interest, and this book is one of the victims. I dropped this one when I figured out there wasn’t going to be any sex in the alien romance novel. How am I supposed to believe they are compatible without seeing if their parts can bring each other pleasure?

I loved this book especially how protective and loving Tilly was towards all her critters. Valla's great in taking up Tilly's mission also. Quite an enjoyable read!

4 stars. Come on sapphic aliens! I really enjoyed this book. It definitely feels like the set up book for the rest of series which was fine. We get a pretty good feel of the world and I adored the characters. Tilly accidentally gets kidnapped by Bavalla and it’s such an insta-love thing between them but it was really so cute. They had wonderful chemistry and both of them were very likable. This was such a fun read with a marriage of convenience and adorable animals thrown on top. I’m looking forward to continuing on with this series because this was a pretty great start.

I love the writing duo of Mackinnon and Tape :) they have created a fun f/f alien romance. Tilly is accidentally abducted when her zoo animals are taken, and Bavalla needs to try to hide and save her. The story is fun, fast- paced and I loved Tilly and Bavalla :)

This is another great Alien romance from Skye. It is FF if you're not into that. Tilly gets abducted with her so animals and her fav rhino. Bavalla thought this was a normal abduction until she finds Tilly among the hold of animals. She must keep her hidden at all costs or risk severe punishment. Tilly wants to save her animals. Great quick read and would recommend it if you are needing something different and don't mind FF.

I can always rely on Skye MacKinnon to provide me with a good alien romance. Here we have Tilly who just happens to be doing what she loves and that is being able to take care of the zoo animals. Then we have Bavalla who is doing what she is told only to realize that something else happened. Tilly ends up on the ship and has to figure out how to save her animals. She just did not think that she would meet someone who would spark something inside her. Bavalla is trying to figure out how to fix the problem. Or is a problem? Even though this is a fast read, we still get an amazing story. The emotions, adventures and the sense of rightness it all works out. I loved it and was happy how everything turned out. If you like alien romance, then you need to check this out.

Everything was going according to plan, or so Bavalla thought. The animals on the list were now all in the cargo hold of their ship. Then she notices an extra something in one of the containers. A sentient being, if the captain found out it would mean her death.

Tilly wakes in a strange place with Brie, her favorite Rhino in the zoo where she worked. She's about to learn some very interesting things about where she and many of the animal she cares for are.

Aside from trying to avoid the captain, Valla also needs a plan to keep Tilly and her animals safe. Tilly doesn't want to leave the animals anywhere so it's not going to be easy.

A fun romp in space, with some angst, laughter, a romance and some very interesting characters.

Tilly is a female zookeeper from Earth that doesn't believe in aliens. Her non-believer status quickly changes when Tilly, her rhino Brie, and half of the animals in her zoo are accidentally abducted by an alien. That's right accidentally abducted!! Tilly loves her animals and is fiercely protective of them. The abductor is named Bavalla, a beautiful blue skinned, elf eared, female alien, of the Kyven species. Bavalla is one of the hired for pay crew members on a spaceship that's ran by a greedy and vicious captain. They're basically licensed pirates. Who abduct anything, unless it has been classified as sentient, and then sell it to the highest bidder. That's because abducting sentient beings is highly illegal and punishable by the Galactic Union if you're caught. Most of the crew love when it's their turn for abduction duty. They love the excitement of going to a new planet and being the one to beam up the local flora, fauna and exotic animals. Except Bavalla is burnt out on that particular job and makes a huge mistake! While beaming up the zoo animals she overlooks the sentient human among them. She doesn't figure it out until the ship is already 10 light years away. Bavalla is torn between a deadly captain who doesn't tolerate mistakes and a pretty human who demands to be returned to Earth along with all of her zoo animals. To make matters worse Bavalla is extremely attracted to Tilly and doesn't want to return her at all.

I received an ARC from booksprout, voluntarily leaving a review, all opinions are 100% my own. This read like a YA to me. It was a cute romance story involving f/f, caring for wild animals, a few culture clash laughs, overcoming the villain and a sweet hea. A light read that makes you feel good. Easy to follow, believable, and sharp on imagery and editing. This is not my usual genre but I'm having fun with it and not having to go to deep dark places. I'm looking forward to the next in the series. The blurb really hooked me. SPOILERS SPOILERS don't read if you don't want to hear about the blurb for the next book---> Bavalla's sister, Sahra, is super jealous and wants her own Tilly to care for and love. Bavalla is not going to share her Tilly and that whole not abducting sentient beings thing really means there's not much chance for Sahra finding a mate like her. Right? But Tilly just so happens to urgently need a vet and medicine for her earth animals. Something they can only get from a little blue planet called Earth. Tilly can't leave her animals, and Bavalla won't leave Tilly. This gives Sahra an idea and the perfect chance to volunteer to go for them. Sahra has already decided she's going no matter what they say. Mate here she comes, ready or not! Finders keepers? I hope to find out.

Woo boy I don't know how to feel about this book. Maybe xenobiology just isn't to my taste... I also find people who are obsessed with animals a bit tedious (sorry guys. I know animals are important and have feelings too, it's just not my thing). All that said, maybe I should have known better than to go for a book called "The Alien's Zookeeper".

I liked the unique bonding ceremony with the metal ear cuffs and small gems. I'm curious as to how the alien biology works such that same-sex couples can procreate. Definitely more going on there than described in this book. I'm also not sure how the alien translator works if it's just above Tilly's ear. Does it affect her speech as well? Does it read her desired language and relay that to the listener? I thought only those who didn't speak standard Kyven got a translator, so a natural speaker like Balla wouldn't have one? Unless I am just misunderstanding the set up. Regardless...

The ending is all very convenient and it's an interesting idea to potentially consensually kidnap someone from earth to come be the vet for the leopard and join in the alien-loving fun. That being said, I don't know if I will revisit this series in the near future. Like I said, I'm not an animal person. Best wishes to those who are though.

First book in the Aliens and Animals Series and my first read of the author's work. A bored alien, a zealous zookeeper and animals what could possibly go wrong? Bavalla/Valla, an alien on abductor duty but thoroughly bored as she operates the A Beam bringing animals from the latest abduction site to her spacecraft. Tilly, zookeeper extraordinaire whose focus has always been on the wellbeing of her animals finds herself beamed up in error and trapped on an alien spacecraft. The realization that similarities outweigh the differences keep me hooked as did the warming of the lead characters relationship. Descriptions of Kyven animals were so clear, I had no trouble picturing them. A kyven ceremony/marriage is the only solution or Tilly's facing possible death if discovered and Valla - I can't describe what her fate would be. This is a quick read with humor and heat which I thoroughly enjoyed. Looking forward to the next in the series and what comes along for Valla's sisters.

Strange interesting story of how A mistake of earth animals and the zookeeper was basically kidnapped from a alien spaceship that seem to be pirating. The female technician who was on the spaceship did not realize that there was an alien on the ship with the animals. So she has to fix the dilemma. Interesting strategies used to help the zookeeper stay a secret. And how romance is very different from her planet versus earth. So trying to save the animals and the zookeeper simultaneously is complicated. There is a continuation from the kind of sort of cliffhanger. Waiting to see if there is a book two.

I really enjoyed this novella, about an alien who accidentally beams on a zookeeper while she's trying to kidnap animals from an Earth Zoo. Intrigue and fun follow, sometimes even hilarious. I'm normally very picky about this genre, but I enjoyed it. I loved seeing both Bavalla (Valla) and Tilly so open and so curious about each other's uses. Hmm....they aren't as different as you might think! It was sweet to see their similarities and connection and get a little heated too. A fun romp in space, with some fear, laughter, a romance and some very interesting characters. I really recommend this one as I enjoyed it very much.

Tilly and Barvalla

I found this to be funny and entertaining, as well as an unusual premise. Who hasn't had a day at work that got kind of boring? The results usually aren't serious, unless you are Barvalla who accidentally abducts a human along with the animals. This is a fun adventure romp about what happens when there's a screw up. I love the connection between Barvalla and Tilly. The secondary characters are varied and interesting. The ceremonies are beautiful in the book. I can't wait for the next in the series. The F/F component makes the book stronger. The world building is excellent.

I absolutely adored this book. Accidental abductions, language barriers, cultural acclimation, a little angst, and a lot of love. A cliffhanger epilogue that definitely made me add these authors to my watchlist as the book is so enjoyable that I'm sure whatever comes next will be just as wonderful. It's a light read, it gives you happy feels, it's a short adventure with some wonderful laughs. Cheers to a breath of fresh air in the f/f universe.

Fixing a Little Mistake . . .

Apparently elf-eared Bavalla made a big mistake. She accidentally beams up the zookeeper who was caring for the rhino and in close proximity to it when they were being transported to the ship. Bavalla was supposed to just steal animals from the Earth zoo, and definitely not any sentient beings. The Captain, her boss, will be furious. But Tilly won’t let her fix the mistake unless she can take her animals back home too. What’s an alien supposed to do to fix this? How can she keep the human hidden and protected?

Well…

I didn't like nor I dislike the book, like I thought it was okay but the plot wasn't interesting sure they had to come up with a solution with their problem while she copes being in an alien spaceship but everything was dull and boring, I liked how they used this gadget to communicate and she struggles to keep her own thoughts for her alien to read and it was funny but that end up quickly.

I just didn't care for the plot or either character so I stopped reading it. The writing was okay but not good enough

Disembowelment sounds painful whether you are a humor or an alien - just saying.

Alien abducts a girl and they fall in love. Sounds simple right? Well Skye MacKinnon and Arizona Tape put their own twist on it by adding animal rights and the black market. I love Tilly’s feistiness even in the midst of the unknown. MacKinnon and Tape provide action, chemistry, and some adorable and funny animal moments in this story. I cannot wait for this series to continue.

Adorably Romantic

This story is so sweet - Valla and Tilly are so sweet together, first fumbling through first contact, then falling for each other. I loved watching them fall in love, it was so tender and romantic. Tilly’s commitment to her zoo animals was also really inspiring. A wonderful start to what is such to be a sweet series.

Sweet Romance between different species

Skye, thanks for the very sweet and fairly simple story. Especially when neither woman would have called themselves lesbian before they met each other. That is how love is, it can happen anytime between any people. Looking forward to book 3 (Already finished Book 2).
