In the adorable eighth book of the Good Dog series, Bo tests his luck! There are plenty of sunny, good luck days on the farm. But sometimes, stormy bad luck clouds come around too, and Bo will need all the puppy luck he can find to chase those clouds away. With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Good Dog chapter books are perfect for emerging readers.
Young Adult Books Central There's excitement on the farm when Bo's humans, including young Imani and Wyatt, pain the chicken coop. It needs freshening up, and red paint with crisp white trim will make it look much better. However, Bo sees a squirrel, gives chase, and ends up knocking over and then treading through the white paint. When the squirrel hops on top of the coop, Bo covers the side with his white paw prints. He feels awful, and his luck seems to get worse. He gets a bath, but gets stung on the nose by a bee and caught in the rain, then spends the night hiding under the couch because of the thunderstorm. His friends and humans worry about him, and his friend Scrapper visits to try to raise his spirits. They brainstorm (or "barnstorm"!) ideas that will help Bo get his luck back, and decide that a four leaf clover might help. Complications ensue as they look for one, and Bo begins to realize that his real luck lies with his supportive friends. Good Points Ariel Landy's black and white page illustrations are absolutely delightful, and it doesn't hurt that Bo looks a lot like my dog Pongo! The facial expresssions of all the animals are adorable, and also serve the purpose of helping emerging readers figure out what is going on in the text. The books in this series are the perfect length to read aloud over several nights, or for young readers to tackle on their own.
I'm always a fan of a gentle message in children's books, but hate to see anything particularly pedantic. Higgins does a great job of delivering a subtle message about making your own luck by putting it into a funny and engaging story. Similar reads would include Winston's Wednesday and Woof, Dillard's Mouse Scouts, and Ahn's Pug Pals. Be prepared to find all of the books in the series, because Bo and his antics are highly addictive!
After book 7 (my favorite in this series) book 8 was a bit of a let down. Just a little too silly and over the top for me. But my kids still enjoyed it, even though some things were too silly for them too.
This book suffered for not having the illustrations in color. When you have a storyline with painting, clovers, rainbows it is much more enjoyable in color. I didn't care for this one. Maybe I don't believe in people being bad luck or good and definitely not dogs. I wouldn't read this one again.
My son really enjoyed this story and so did I. It probably helps that we have a dog named Bo just like the main character who can also be a sweet and silly pup. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
Bo acts like a puppy and gets himself in trouble. His friends say he's having bad luck and take him out to find a four-leaf clover to restore his good puppy luck.
Everything seems to be going wrong for Bo, so his friends try to help him find his puppy luck. This is a cute series for lower grade students. I like the set up of a big font with lots of good pictures.
I really enjoyed this one! Bo has a bad day and tries to find a lucky charm to fix it, he learns though that sometimes bad days happen and good days come again. A great moral to the story!
I still love these cute books for my 5 year old. Not a big fan of this one just because it says “oh my gosh” and the end lesson is about following your heart and believing in yourself. No biggy for an entertaining book, but it did lose a star.
