Cam Porter is a charter pilot living a quiet life in the small island town of Sitka, Alaska. She’s spent most of her adult life avoiding any kind of affection and has put off romantic relationships. Her small but mighty family circle includes her exuberant dog Goose who gets her through the days between doing what she loves most, flying.
Skyler Callaghan had to leave Sitka while she was still attending high school. Despite the time and distance, a childhood crush on her best friend’s older sister never went away—a little fact she almost forgot about until an unplanned trip back home reminds her.
When the two women find themselves stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, it isn’t exactly the setting Skyler always dreamt of when she pictured nights with Cam. She tries to put her feelings aside for the sake of her sanity and survival but she feels herself being drawn even closer to Cam. As things start to shift between them, Cam has to decide if she can learn to trust and let go.
Our two 'love interests' were about as interesting as watching paint dry. 44% in I felt I don't have a truly clear grasp of their personalities, aside from one being a photographer, and the other a light plane pilot.
We know they grew up together, until Skyler left in highschool for reasons unknown. We also know Cam has trust and abandonment issues because of her parents premature death, and somehow Skylers leaving? but we still hadn't got any real details about that, or their times growing up. Except painting a picture that shows Skyler was infact Cam's brothers best friend. So why she would take her leaving so hard, when she was her brothers bestie, seems over the top. But whatever.
I felt more for the brothers relationship with his wife, than I did for the supposedly simmering romance between the two women. Cam was often moody and brash, doing that whole tough girl 'keeping you at arms length' thing. Yet. There was no real emotion connected to her doing that. It's like all real feeling got sucked out. Even Skylers own responses are flat and lifeless.
Everyone is just going through the motions and even the survival aspect was easy and non-threatening and just a way to force proximity and yet it did not evolve much.
Speaking of, I thought the setting of Alaska would mean a very cool environment to discover. Nope. There was no atmosphere to discover in the location, either. So I simply couldn't force myself to slog through.
Others gave this much higher ratings than I - and in checking I realize I also DNF the authors other book, so I can only assume this author isn't for me. As always check it out for yourself and would love to hear your thoughts!
This book was so good. Writing, plot, character development were all so well done. I started it last night and should have known better, was up till 2 am and then woke up before my alarm even went off anxious to finish. Cam and Skyler’s adventure was so well described I felt like I could have been there. All of this was even before Goose the dog stole my heart. I loved that it was set in Sitka as well. I was one of the dreaded cruise ship tourists clogging up the two stop lights in town but I remember loving this area and wishing I could have spent more than an afternoon there. Thank you Violet Morley for granting me that wish, now I just need to get back.
I really wanted to like this book and I did up until 85%-90% mark. It became a bit too cheesy and cringe for me at that point.
Cam and Skyler crash their (float?) plane and get stranded on a remote Alaskan island. The women know each other from their childhood. Skyler is Cam’s brother’s best friend and has had a crush on Cam since she was a teenager. Cam is a bit stand-offish, Skyler handles her push and pull, all the mixed signals with a lot more poise than you could expect from anyone. I liked the characters but didn’t love them, or the setting. When you hear characters are surviving on a remote Alaskan island you expect a little more than snow capped mountains and lots of water, the un-see-ums and bears. And yes, these are the sole words to describe the Alaskan setting. It’s a bit of a shame. With an Alaskan native as an author you’d expect a bit more 🤷🏻♀️
It was a nice read, with a cool furry friend (Goose is the best character in the book), I just wanted/ needed a little more.
There are already a lot of reviews for this amazing story so I'll keep it short. Just want to say that I was hooked immediately and that I can't wait for Violet Morley next book. Read it, you won't be disappointed.
I had the honour to beta read this book a few weeks ago. I already loved the story then and was very happy about it. Not that it surprised me after Sprinkled in the Stars was just amazing. I was looking forward to read it again after the release and also to discuss it with a friend for whom Sprinkled in the Stars was one of her favourite books. Because my friend died about 3 weeks ago, I can’t discuss it with her. But it means I read the story for her and know that she would have loved it.
Reading it again was so amazing. I was able to see all the little things Violet Morley added or changed. She was able to make this good story in an incredible beautiful one. And I am so very happy about the outcome. During times I struggle a lot and I‘m often sad this book made me smile and swoon. I was cheering for two childhood friends Skyler and Cam. Skyler that loved Cam since she was a teenager on the one hand. And on the other the oblivious overthinker Cam that is so scared to be left alone once again.
After not seeing each other for quite a bit Nana Winnie’s death changes that. And even if she isn’t around anymore in person her soul always is during the whole book. She looks after them and brings them on the right path. Not sure if her plan included a plane crash and them being stuck on an island, but in the end it works no matter what.
I definitely highly recommend this story. A story that is sweet and exciting. The adventure of them on the island made it hard to stop reading for anything else. I wanted to know what happens next and if Cam finally starts to see what’s right in front of her. And then there is the utterly sweet dog Goose and the typical cat Raven. Even if I have to say that Goose definitely stole all the spotlight. Something that’s hard to accept for a cat. ☺️ Which leads me to the dedication that is just perfect (you have to read it to see for yourself). If I ever get a dog I hope it’s another Goose. 😍
And now I would say go and read this book. I‘m already looking forward to more from Violet.
I really liked Violet Morley's first novel Sprinkled in the Stars, but this one didn't do it for me. This one was a very slow burn which made me lose interest a few times until I finally got to the end. Even though Cam and Skyler had to spend a long time together it didn't feel like they got to know one another any better. Their conversations were mostly regarding trivial stuff, nothing really personal that could give a more thorough perception of their personalities, thoughts or feelings. They had no chemistry whatsoever. They also had some issues from previous relationships which were only brushed over. Overall, an okay book but nothing I would remember in time.
Edit: Also, is it just me or was the narration incredibly slow? I had to increase the playback speed in order for it to sound normal.
This is the 2nd novel by this author. The first was so good I didn't know how Violet would top it. But she did. There is so much in this story. Cam and Skyler were meant to be. Cam just had to realize it. But this is not just a romance. There is adventure. Family and friends. Beautiful nature. Goose one of the greatest dogs ever along with Raven the cat. And Skyler is such a sweet strong character. She has loved Cam for so long she knows how to let Cam process. I have to stop. I dont want to give away anymore. But there is much more. Just buy the book and savor.
I enjoyed Morley's first book more. This took the slow-burn trope to the extreme...ly slow. It was kinda annoying. The only saving grace for me was Goose, Nana and Aunt Abby.
This was soo boring, my GOD!! 😭😭😭 I usually try to be nice and positive but this review is mostly going to be a rant so if you don't like such reviews, now would be a good time to stop reading.
There was just no point to this whole story! At the start of the story, we are told that Cam is an amazing pilot, who lives in Sitka, Alaska. She does this for a living. So its very difficult for me to believe that she did not see the rocks where she was trying to land and eventually crashed. Then, Skylar, our main character - who, imo deserved sooo much better btw, had an epileptic episode and to get her to safety and the plane catching fire, Cam bust her knee and lost most of her supplies and they ended up lost on an island. There, they waited for 10 days for rescue to come and get them and in that time we mostly just saw Cam snapping at Skyler and being miserable and yet staying at once place most of the time because of her knee while Skyler goes to forage for berries and food, cooks food, helps out Cam in her injury, makes an SOS sign, takes her pictures (yup, she saved her camera), and also controls ALL HER EMOTIONS!!! just so that Cam can feel better 🙄 And Cam knows that stress can push Skylar to have an epileptic episode! The least she can do is be thankful to Skylar and not lose her temper on her! 😠😡😩 Skylar's already doing sooo much! Ugh! And eventually, by the end when Skylar thinks that she's in love with Cam WHY?!?! Skylar is ready to shift to Sitka for her. But Cam says, "it's too soon..." 😑 ... ... ... Ya think!?!
What a story that gives new meaning to Island time.
I just wish I could give the words to express this brilliantly written story. From page one the characters grabbed my heart and I held on tightly. Cam and Skyler just have the most beautiful connection and to feel it grow throughout the book was priceless. I loved Skyler and the gentle way she brings together so much love-life giving comfort. Their experience was an adventure that brings friendship to a level of understanding their true connection. Micah, Lily, Maggie and Aunt Abby bring so much to the depth of this family. The dialogue is funny, so real and oh so heartfelt. We all need a Nana Winnie in our life and she is the steadfast love for this group of people who are home for each other. In case I have not been CLEAR I LOVE THIS STORY. Author Violet Morley is someone I will be excitingly be wait for her next book.
Enjoyable, though I did want to say "just get on with it!" Not totally convinced by the premise - plane crash and no one knowing where they are - but loved the story and Skyler's persistence.
Having spent nearly a decade in Alaska, I've gotta say that the details in this book were amazing. From not locking your car, no-see-ums, salmonberries, you name it. The details (for me) were amazing. Very immersive. Cam is a pain in the ass as a character until you realize the breadcrumbs throughout her character arc get dolled out. The epiphany of possibly being demi was particular to that arc IMO. Anyway. I liked Sprinkled in the Stars well enough, but really fell in love with this book. Well done.
3/5 Only one thing I know for sure about this book.
The main relationship between Cam a pilot and her younger brother' bestfriend Skyler,is not gonna last. They're gonna be that kind of couple that will get divorced(if they get there) years in the relationship, not because of cheating because the relationship itself it's not gonna work.
Most part in this book Cam had outbursts from the smallest and had let her anger to say hurtful things to Skyler, and then just apologise after she had hurted Skyler's feelings and then the circle repeating itself. They weren't even in the relationship but it's obvious that Cam needs to work on her anger issues 🤦♀️
And then in the last part when they get together, they were kinda of cringe together.
I absolutely loved the first book by this author so I couldn’t wait for this one to be released. When I found out it is set in Sitka I was even more excited since I live in Alaska and have been in Sitka many times. However, from the beginning this book didn’t pull me in and the characters were flat and didn’t have any chemistry. There were a few questions left open like why did skyler leave and what is with cam’s backstory? It’s definitely a book everyone should try but it wasn’t my cup of tea - as said above maybe I had too high of hopes.
We have two very deeply defined, totally loveable main characters, an equally clever and loveable dog plus four beautiful supporting characters. Add in some adventure, heartbreak and a bear, what more could you possibly want?
Why I haven't read this before is beyond me. Morley is an utter marvel!
if you saw me reading this since april no you didn’t :)
kindle unlimited has been serving lately & getting to see skyler’s unrequited love morph into the two being brought together by multiple outside forces was everything
A wonderful adventure from my TBR shelves! Cam is a pilot in Alaska. Years ago her neighbor one brother Micha's best friend Skyler left for Portland. When her grandmother passed away, she left her home in Sitka, Alaska to Skyler. Which pit her back in the lives of Cam and Micha. When Cam and Skyler fly to spread her Nana Winnie's ashes, they lose power and when putting the plane down in the water, Cam sees a large boulder hidden under water. This is where the adventure begins! A fantastic adventure/slow burn love story! 5 stars!
This book makes me want to go see Sitka. It is well written contemporary romance novel. The conflict that ended the MCs in the wilderness was well placed, pacing was good. The found family relationship was warm and inviting. It’s a cozy read.
This book could have been worked over more with plotting and editing. The actual storyline didn't really begin until about 20% of the way through, and the introductory section could have benefited from being cleaned up a bit. There were a lot of characters presented all at once, some of the characters could have been written a bit better and more distinctive. Some storylines from the first couple of chapters did not end up needing to be there, and it effected the pacing of the book. I didn't hate it, it was an okay read, but definitely could have been better.
This is a great story. Loved all the characters, got my heart beat up with fear a couple of times. Mostly made me smile more. Warm, loving great setting, what more can you want. Highly recommend. I found this book on Facebook group of Lesbians someone mentioned it. They all mostly live in the US.so I went looking for it as I live in Scotland.Really pleased to have found this author.
Sapphic women trapped on an island is definitely one of my book niches, and this one did not disappoint! It was a really lovely story and all of the characters were good people. My only qualm is that I thought there should have been more context and more backstory for the two characters. It was basically a second-chance romance, and we barely got any information about the first chance. But regardless, I very much enjoyed this book!
Another lesbian romance wrongly rated. This is just a mediocre, cosy romance for those who enjoy somewhat emotional immature thirty somethings, forgettable Alaskan enviroment, and weirdly put in characters.
I have so many questions, but again I don’t care enough to ask them.
I’ve been through 140+ lesbian romance novels now, and too many has a 4 star rating. Not coherent at all. According to GRs own rating system There should be more 2 and 3-stars.
3.5/5 - overall, I did really like this, but for some reason I just found myself putting it down. So I’m a bit disappointed that it just didn’t hook my attention the way I wanted it to.
I liked the survival aspect of this. The way it was handled, both the crash and the time on the island, were well done. I think where it lost me a bit was with the romance. Sometimes their interactions were really details, other times it just said that they talked. Like after a fight, it would have been nice to see them make up after reading about the fight, not just see one line indicating that they had talked and made up.
I’m glad I saw this book as I was scrolling through Kindle Unlimited options and gave it a chance!
DNF on page 40! I have tried reading ‘sprinkled in the stars’ and this book but I have not been able to get through either of them and have DNF’d both! I feel like both of these books were over sexualised in some ways. I know they’re adult books and they are going to have sexuality in them but it just made me so uncomfortable, and the character hadn’t even started building a relationship before it was sexualised! It was so weird to me! I was going to give this 2⭐️ but seeing as I didn’t even get 50 pages in I juts couldn’t! The writing over all was good but the interactions just made me disgusted!
This story was well written with a good amount of drama with the plane crash and the unrequited love of a 14 year old as well as a woman with relationship issues. All of these problems were addressed by the main characters and then the writer included issues concerning supporting characters that connected the whole story together. The issues humanized the story and made the drama bearable and the love story real. A truly wonderful story to read and great for me to recommend to everyone else for reading.
