In the course of a full day at Butternut Hollow Pond, readers will meet water striders, snapping turtles, herons, woodchucks, and other animals that live in the pond. Readers will learn how each creature fits into the habitat's food chain.
This is a beautifully written, nonfiction, picture book about a day at Butternut Hollow Pond. This would be a great book to read aloud during a science lesson on food chains or a writing lesson on descriptive writing. I haven't seen much like this book in regards to nonfiction children's books.
My son has a particular love of ponds, so this was something I immediately gravitated towards for him, with the subject matter and beautiful illustrations. The text explains many of the creatures that can be found in a pond ecosystem and how they relate to each other. There’s definitely a lot of learning to be had with this book, but it does get a bit wordy at times. Would be great for elementary classrooms.
Butternut Hollow Pond Heinz, Brian J. beautiful pictures on a story line that goes through the day showing the hunters and the pray, how they live, die, escape, and survive in a small hollow, in the quiet waters for the pond, lake, and sky.
Written with amazingly beautiful language, this is a book to share with your elementary classroom if you are studying ponds or food chains. Your students will learn about life in the pond, but will be treated with great similies, strong verbs, and wonderful writing.
