When the true evil behind the Empyreals is revealed, the Power Rangers must band together with unexpected allies to save Earth!
THE TRUE EVIL BEHIND THE EMPYREALS REVEALED!
Decimated by an ambush from the power behind the Empyreals, the Power Rangers find themselves fractured and mourning for the loss of one of their own. Even as an all-out assault from the Empyreals is imminent, the Power Rangers must defend Angel Grove from the constant threat of Lord Zedd and his minions.
But saving Angel Grove, Earth, and the universe itself, will require the Rangers to set aside old rivalries and their feelings of betrayal to band together with unexpected allies. Will they be able to overcome their distrust of Grace Sterling, the new Green Ranger, and Promethea to band together for the greater good? Will the Omega Rangers return in time to help defend Earth? If they are to push back the Empyreals, the Power Rangers will need to learn who their true friends… and true enemies really are!
Superstar writer Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and rising star artist Marco Renna continue the UNLIMITED POWER era as the shocking secrets of Zordon’s past are laid bare!
I’ll leave the same review for both volume 4’s of Mighty Morphin and of Power Rangers since they are to be read in tandem, an issue of each at a time. And for the record, I read all of these issues in one sitting because I couldn’t put them down.
I’ve got friends that I’m reading this with, so I won’t mention any story aspects to avoid spoilers in case they read this. Though I am SUPER excited to talk about these, so read these damn books this week, JEFF! That being said, I’ll just share how I feel about these volumes overall. I feel like there were a couple of things in these stories that if they didn’t get addressed, these would have been an easy 4. But having read them entirely and having consumed all of the Eltarian War story that Ryan Parrott gave us, this was a ridiculously easy 5 star book for me. I found myself questioning some things Parrott was doing or where the story was going and then BOOM, he tells you to shut up and enjoy the ride because he actually had a plan for whatever you were thinking all along. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve got blind trust in Ryan Parrott with this franchise. This man is a genius and it’s time that I’ve admitted, as ridiculous as this statement is, that his Power Rangers run has been one of the most entertaining, if not best, comic book runs that I’ve ever read.
The Eltarians think they killed Zordon. This story is the culmination of many different storylines. The combination of Kim, Adam, & Rocky made me smile. Billy discussing what happened in Drakkon's world further proves how this ongoing story will continue to diverge from the expectations set by the original tv show.
I really liked Billy and Yale interacting. Billy's relationship with Zordon is showcased in a cool way. Zordon and Zedd!!!
There's just too much to mention in this volume. Paired with "Power Rangers Vol. 4" these books give a satisfying conlclusion to these stories. I'll looking forward to where the creative teams take us next. I give this book a 5/5.
I uhhhh haven’t been reading the other Power Rangers book and this is more like half an event because of that. Still pretty good but don’t make my mistake!
This review basically covers both Mighty Morphin' Volume 4 and Power Rangers Volume 4, since the Eltarian War storyline threads through the pair of them to the point that you really need to read both of them to get the full picture.
This feels like what Ryan Parrott has been building to for a while now, and it shows. He brings the plot threads from both books back together, making sure that both the Eltarians and the Empyreals have their time to shine as villains, while also remembering that there are two teams of Power Rangers AND Lord Zedd and his goons to deal with as well.
There's a lot to love here, and it's Power Rangers at its best. While it's not the massive scope of Shattered Grid, it definitely has season finale potential, and it's exciting to watch unfold. Parrott's character work with Zordon, Zartus, and Zedd is a joy, and he's even managed to make Matt as the Green Ranger work surprisingly well. And when the dust settles, both books feel like their mission statements have changed, rather than just going back to what they were before, so the event banner is definitely justified.
On art are the usual suspects - Marco Renna on Mighty Morphin', with an assist from Go Go Power Rangers originator Dan Mora, while Francesco Mortarino handles duties on Power Rangers. Even with inking and colourist assistants, these books never falter in the art department.
The Eltarian War is the kind of big crossover event that you want it to be. There's twists, turns, payoffs, and action galore, plus excellent character work and lovely art. What else could you want?
Flew through this and really was the payoff to the buildup of first three issues. It’s my first drop of a star on the series though.
Here, characters were added without any explanation as to who they were. I’m going to guess this is made clear in the series that precedes this but I didn’t read that so it’s unusual in a new series to introduce characters without some indication of who they are. Some of the action pages were challenging to make out what was happening but overall I still enjoyed. The final page and image accompanying is fantastic (might try find a print of that somewhere). Love how Zedd is portrayed as legit threat, Darth Vader esque in this series.
Edit: I just read reviews to see that this needs to be read in tandem with the other Power Rangers series. I aim to, but how was anyone to know this? :)
This was a cool concept but wish the event wasn’t split up between this and Power Rangers. I didn’t realize until I finished this TP because it kept jumping from moment to moment without explanation or even like an indication to check out the next part elsewhere.
Non-stop action and reveals galore. This arc is coming to the end and the stakes keep getting higher. The art was a little jarring at first but the colors were great. I also really enjoyed the copious amounts of Zord action in this one.
The Eldarian War is in full swing in this volume along with volume four of the Power Rangers run and it may be the best single story to come out of the MMPR split into the two different comics. I really enjoyed the reveal of Omega Blue and the reveal of the different Zord combinations including one that fans has been clamoring for years! I'm looking forward to the new writers to see what they do but it will be an uphill climb after this run!
