Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…

In the land of Wano, Luffy and the Straw Hats hastily attempt to recruit allies in preparation for an imminent raid. But unbeknownst to the crew, the balance of world power is about to be thrown further askew when Big Mom shows up and forms a pirate alliance with Kaido! How will this potent union affect Luffy’s recovering crew?

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Dang, there is SO much going on in the present timeline right now and also people spilling tea left and right about history!

The Straw Hats are still working with their friends in Wano – both samurai like Kin’emon and other pirates like Law - to organize an army to take down Kaido. This doesn’t go super well, as it turns out there is a traitor in their midst. But one should never underestimate Luffy’s ability to bounce back!
Prison guards: (Think they’ve just about shut down a riot and gotten everything back to normal).
Guard (spotting Luffy just doing stretches in the corner): “Oh, right. HE’S still free.”
Luffy: (knuckle crack) “I’ve always BEEN free. And now this place is mine!”

Luffy

It’s super interesting that Kaido and a lot of the people connected to him don’t seem to have any positive goals. Past antagonists were all trying to accomplish something: Get really rich, find a super-weapon, ride an ark to the moon, build an ethnostate, etc. And, of course, the Marines think they stand for law and order and justice. But our first in-person view of Kaido was him trying unsuccessfully to off himself, and at least two of his subordinates also seem to be in “I just wanna smash shit because I hate the world, including myself” mode! They are not gleeful super-villains – even from the little we’ve seen of them, they are miserable. Which, given the little I know about HOW Luffy beats Kaido, is SO amazingly appropriate!

Also connecting to that theme, probably, is the smile fruits (artificial devil fruits). Only 10% give their eaters powers, while for the rest: “The side effect of the imperfect chemical mixture wipes out the ability to express sorrow or anger, meaning that the only thing they can do anymore is laugh!” We see this used to creepy and horrific effect as a whole group of people find themselves laughing uncontrollably as their hero is executed. This also leads to the delayed reunion of Luffy’s “wings”, who find themselves independently rushing in to save the man’s young daughter from being shot:
SanjiZoro

The backstory on Lord Oden (Momonuske & Hiyori’s father) is bonkers. The stuff he’s getting up to as a kid is like baby Hercules shenanigans. Also, if he HAD to be “stealing” everyone’s wives for his harem at age 18…at least Oda establishes that it was consensual! Like, he was just THAT charismatic! Though you’d think stuff like making stew (the “oden” he’s named after) over a funeral pyre would be…kind of off-putting?
Oden

But the most important thing about Oden, with regard to the main story of One Piece, is
Unfortunately, while they were gone Orochi

Another couple of fun Wano-related moments:
Kiku
We not only get the formal reveal of Okiku (the graceful lady samurai) as being trans…
“Onlooker: That mask! But I thought he died at Oden castle! Isn’t that the mask of the most handsome swordsman of Wano, Kikunojo of the fallen snow?
Chopper: What? You’re a man?
Okiku (sweetly): This one is a woman at heart.”

…but find out that her sibling is Izo, the okama division commander on Whitebeard’s crew, and that they both already dressed feminine back when they were little urchins tagging along after Oden! So that’s neat. (People do refer to them as “brothers” though, even though modern-day Okiku is called “she” by everyone who actually knows her).
IzoKiku
(Also, I noticed in looking for pictures that, because Okiku was working in a teahouse, she has her kimono sleeves tied back with straps over her shoulders, just like Sanji – see top picture - which is a practical detail for service workers that I’d never considered before!)

And, after Hiyori offers Zoro the powerful and rather dangerous sword Enma in exchange for the return of Shisui to the grave Moria stole it from…the Q&A reveals that the swordsmith who made both Enma and Zoro’s first and most treasured sword Wado Ichimonji, came from Wano and founded Zoro’s village. He was also the grandfather of Zoro’s late childhood friend-rival Kuina!

Out in the wider world, the Reverie (the meeting of the world’s leaders) has concluded. Vice Admiral Garp had this to say about it:
“Differences in wealth and religion will ensure that kings are never truly equals. When it comes time to join hands, they smile and grind each other’s boots under the table. How many kings can actually speak equally for both their own people and others? A ‘round table’ indeed!”
And, apparently, something DID go wrong there concerning both Princess Vivi’s family and …but it has not yet been revealed WHAT.

One of the big decisions made at the meeting was to This isn’t exactly surprising, but neither do most of them seem worried.

Retired admiral Sengoku starts to spill the tea on the “Rocks Pirates” story, which involves the young versions of Kaido, Big Mom, Whitebeard, Roger, AND Garp! Though some of the details he’s revealed so far – such as who was working for the celestial dragons’ interests – doesn’t yet make any sense!

And the third volume ends on a great line:
“Kaido’s guys: The worst generation? I thought they were locked up!”
Luffy: Hey, you! Don’t pick on samurai in a rowboat! When you’re at sea, you fight against PIRATES!”

it’s super:

1. the reason why the beginning of wano was so boring is the fact that all the plot twists are actually mid at that point. we all know that something wild is gonna happen and we don’t actually have sympathy for yasuie - besides the fact that he is otoko’s father. the things that amazed me were the truth of killer, kaido’s one shot to luffy, and seeing zoro after so much time in 2019. they haven’t changed i suppose. the big mom storyline with the fight with queen was really ‘’… okay. i’d already known that you would do this… for the sake of the story…’’

2. okay. i REALLY love the chapter that felt hopelessness VERY WELL, the chapter before the flashback. it really had felt upset.

3. THE GREAT ODEN FLASHBACK. i don’t know if i love this man, if i find him dumb as hell, or if i love him even if he really is dumb as hell. i love oden’s adventures. one of my favorite chapters is 967, which i had read 6-7 times. i love izo. i love newgate. i love roger. i love to see them together. i love the dynamics between the old generation. i love how oden writes his journal. i love how roger and rayleigh loves momo and hiyori. i love seeing franky in oden’s flashback. EVERY LITTLE DETAIL ABOUT THEM, THE DRAWING, THE STORYLINE, THE EASTER EGGS, THE DIALOGS, EVERY FUCKING LITTLE THING IS REAL AND FLAWLESS. laugh tale? AMAZING UNREVEAL. BEYOND ANY COMPARISON.

4. i’ll tell you a funny thing: the best thing about wano happened outside wano, which is the piracy part of oden’s life. after that? he is doing what he is, he is being dumb and absolutely honorless for the sake of the even dumber people of wano. look, i love oden. i think i really love him. but the way he is written is so confusing. oden is so powerful, he can clash with newgate and give a scar to kaido. so what? let’s give the barrier fruit to kurozumi. oden isn’t really intelligent. so what? let’s give the copy fruit to a kurozumi. it feels forced when it comes to wano. (and SUKIYAKI LIVES like what the fuck man??? anyway im not gonna talk about that.)

5. kaido is as treacher as a great pirate, which makes me really adore him as a whole character. (tricking oden after eating that togen tetsuka and telling oden that he killed the old hag because she had tricked oden which causes him to kill oden… kaido… that’s you…)

5. i am oden, and i was born to boil!!

6. oden wouldn’t be oden if it wasn’t boiled!!

7. both phrases are great. this man, this fool of a lord, has my all respect when it comes to his death. he didn’t have to. he just believed them, he believed his samurai and his wife and children. oden was a great man, undoubtedly.

Wano is not my favourite arc so far
The pacing is so much better than in the anime and I still remember how hard the plot twists hit the first time!!

Series: One Piece #94-96
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

This collection continues the Wano arc with the Straw Hats learning the truth about Smile, Luffy and the others escaping the prison, Big Mom and Kaido forming an alliance, the story of Oden, and a betrayer identified. I am really enjoying the Wano story so far. Oden’s story was fascinating because he was part of both Roger and Whitebeard's crew and really embraced all new adventures. Also, his wife Toki had a really cool ability that I wish we could have learned more about, especially why she travels so far into the future in the first place.

This collection ends with the start of the journey to Onigashima to fight Kaido. It doesn’t go as planned though because they have been betrayed by one of their own. It was a surprising betrayal and it will be interesting to see how the Akazaya Nine react in the next volume.

Okayy... shit is getting good here. It's not yet quite what I consider the best of the best but I feel like from now on we're gonna get some amazing moments.

These volumes were mostly focused on Oden and his backstory and I don't mind that but I'm glad to be back to the present because I love spending time with the Straw hat crew most of all.

Overall, these were three very solid volumes that are bordering on 5 stars but are not quite there. Still, I feel like giving them 4 stars is still very good and I can't wait for the rest of Wano arc (but at the same time I'm not sure I want to catch up already so I am experiencing cognitive dissonance).

Anyway, there will be SPOILERS from here on so this is your last chance to leave if you haven't read One Piece up to this point.

Okay I gotta talk about Zoro and Sanji again. I love these guys so much. The scene were they both stand up to help that child... comedy gold. Their reaction to each other is just priceless. And then as if it couldn't get any better they call each other Browgoro and Mossjuro. I just can't with these two. We also get more of Sanji being embarrassed for being a Vinsmoke which is hilarious and very ironic considering the fact that my boy wore the germa suit a few chapters ago. And we also gotta talk about Sanji being jealous of Zoro for interacting with Hiyori (I think that's her name...not sure though). He even points out that his bounty is bigger which makes him think that he'll get more girls because of it. Going back to my boy Zoro... I love how he keeps making excuses for helping Hiyori. Like, at one point he says that he's only doing it because otherwise he would have to answer to Momo (we all know that's a lie). He also gets a new sword from her which is cool (even though I miss the old one). I mean... it's the only sword that wounded Kaido... what more could you possibly want out of a sword.

Okay, enough about these two. I feel like they're the only characters I ever talk about. Let's talk about Kid because why not. I was so mad when he got captured again but then he makes himself a prosthetic arm out of metal objects and damn, that's so cool. Also I love how it's pointed out that he didn't want to bow to Kaido like the puppet dude. Well, he and Killer. Speaking of Killer... I didn't even recognize him without that mask on. Anyway, the last scene with Kid, Luffy and Law together coming to save the day... god, I love it.

I have already mentioned Law and Luffy so let me talk about other moments with them here worth mentioning. First one is Luffy insulting Momo and telling him what a brat he is (it was funny as shit). And the second one is Law's grin as he is locked in the cell. What an icon this man is.

As for the backstories... I have to mention Garp here first because my man is actually a legend who helped Roger defeat Big Mom, Kaido, Whitebeard and that Rocks dude. Like, damn. We also get a lot of Roger here and I just love his crew. Especially young Shanks and Buggy who just have the best dynamic ever. They're like enemies but also best friends who really care for each other and it's jsut wholesome. Not to mention that I actually got emotional when Roger said he was breaking up the Roger pirates (also he said that his son will find the One piece I just immediately started thinking about donuts). The last thing is Oden and the other samurai and let me just say that I was surprised when I first saw that people didn't like Oden. But then I loved how their group formed and the boiling oil scene... damn. Oden is indeed a true hero. Also what the fuck, Kanjuro is a traitor... where did that come from???

I DID IT! I read all the omnibus editions that are available! This feels great. I haven't decided if I'm gonna catch up with the chapter releases or the individual volumes.

Wano has been great. I wasn't feeling it 100% but then they hit me with the back story of Roger and how he went to the final island AND I GOT SUPER EXCITED.
I cannot wait for the next part of this incredible arc. Fights are gonna be crazy.
I love Law. He is my favorite outside the strawhats.

Plus Kaido feels like THE villain I was waiting for

These three volumes setup the raid that is about to come so perfectly. I closed the book feeling more excited to see what’s to come than I have since maybe marineford. The backstory with Oden and learning more about roger and the one piece is just a small taste of pay off but man is it sweet. The lore really deepened and also connected some dots for me in this one. Oda is a wonderful storyteller and world builder and has carefully crafted this wonderful story that I started years ago, with the slow pacing and finally being in the endgame I can’t even put into words how this series has been making me feel.

What a deep dive into the history of Wano and its hero Oden. I enjoyed the flashbacks the most as it colored in a lot of the missing emotional beats from this arc. Seeing all the team ups and preparations coming along was a nice touch. I do wish we had more “solo” time spent with the straw hats among themselves once in a while since its been one thing after the other for a ton of volumes now.

This is, by far, the densest volume up to now, and with good reason: a lot about the past was revealed here and we had a lot of setup for what's to come next.

Good volume, but sometimes it felt like a bit too much.

The twists just keep twisting. Oda knows how to stick the landing with flashbacks. A lot of the time they can feel tedious, but never with Oda. They always pack an emotional wallop.

Mucha información y mucho hipe. Y ese final de aupa. Muchas ganas de continuar la historia ahora que parece que la introducción y los preparativos han acabado y empieza la chicha.
