Hirohiko Araki ( 荒木飛呂彦) is a Japanese manga artist. He left school before graduation from Miyagi University of Education.
He enjoys the baseball manga Kyojin No Hoshii (Star of the Giants); the video games Mario Kart and Bomberman; and likes Prince and other African-American singers, as well as jazz, rock, and rap.
I really love this one! Some fantastic moments for Giorno and Bruno. Sticky Fingers/Zipperman has become one of my favorite stands and all of the elaborate zipper based illustrations are some of my favorite scenes. We also got to meet King Crimson and it's a relief to finally have a big bad on the table and not just villains of the week. The gang is growing on me, and their stands are really unique. I'm just also really ready to see Trish do more, she's a great design, I'd love to see her do more than just be in trouble.
I read this right after stardust crusaders, imo the peak of the series, and several differences jump out.
One, the cast of SC is more likable and more distinct. The zany, comedic characters of Joseph and Polnareff balance the reserved and earnest Kakyoin and Avdol and the stoic, grouchy Jotaro. In GW, the characters are all morose, glum, posturing, vaguely narcissistic. It’s hard to tell them apart. The ostensible mc Giorno is a cipher with the personality of a paper bag. Sure they have their moments. Narancia is the closest to comic relief but he’s an annoying dweeb where Polnareff was a loveable goofball. Mista is dumb as a rock where Joseph was resourceful and clever.
Two, more time and effort is spent on the setting in SC. Lots of little details and tidbits about the culture which form a smaller part in GW.
Three, better villains with more creative stands. A varied and maniacal cast of weirdos populates SC from Enyaba the hag to the killer falcon to the baby to the pathetic, cowardly, and sadistic Steely Dan. So many great, memorable villains and each has a defined personality. Ghiaccio, typical of the villains in GW, is completely blah. No personality. Nothing distinct, no flair. The stands also feel recycled, recalling the mirror stand from SC or Jotaro’s time stopping ability. Nothing as novel as the Sun. The best stand here is talking head, who takes control of the enemy’s speech, but he should have been the sole focus instead of pairing with the water shark.
Four, the art has gotten a lot worse. The art style took a bad turn after SC, becoming less expressive, less dynamic. Characters begin to look more similar. Limp, blank stares, weird noses, fashion model posing which now looks flaccid instead of bold.
Overall the series has gotten more boring, more convoluted, and less fun. Araki still excels at putting his characters in impossible situations and building tension, but pacing is better in SC. In GW, stand battles drag on and on and get too technical, going down rabbit holes until the idea has lost its freshness..
The best scene by far in this volume is where each member of the crew is put on the spot and has to decide where their loyalty lies. This is the sort of high stakes, gut-wrenching choice that reveals character. Afterwards, those who decided to stick around share an unspoken but powerful bond that you can feel even as they partake in a casual meal alongside a Venetian canal. As much as is possible for a bunch of low-life gangsters, anyway.
- honestly, at this point, I forgot Giorno's goal behind joining the mafia - the stand abilities are more vague and repetitive and some of their looks aren't that distinctive in this part for some reason - Bucciarati is a mystery
E cosa succederà a Trish?
So the plot thickens, and while I haven’t finished yet, I’m betting my next paycheck that this is the best Jojo Part. The plot is simply much more linear than its predecessor’s and for me, it’s showing Araki can do more than use a smattering of minor villains to lengthen the story.
Vanilla Ice is really fun and pulls together a lot of elements between a high speed chase, an underwater duel, fisticuffs AND gunplay. Mista doesn’t have a bad moment and again has to gut it out (this dude gets shot once/volume 😭)
The Mystery of King Crimson is pheeeenomenal. Dio and Kira both had an aura that emanated off the page, but this first silhouetted look at The Boss and King Crimson genuinely feels like a horror scene. King Crimson looks unnerving, his ability is essentially an upgraded mind-melting version of The World’s, and the crypt setting heightens all the feelings of unease. The Boss and Bucciarati’s skirmish is awesome by itself, and the unexplainable affects it has on the crew outside and on Bucciarati after have me salivating. I have no idea where this is going.
Bucciarati’s origin is also great - they’ve all been really good. I also want to highlight how freakin’ tough Bucciarati is in this volume. I included a panel of BB (literally) swallowing his fear and moving forward. His double-or-nothing approach to the King Crimson fight is so sick.
As if this all wasn’t good enough, Narancia has a little moment relating himself to Trish and recognizing his own moral compass trumps allegiance to anything else… then is immediately attacked by a duo of Stands that perfectly blend terror and comedy. PEAK.
Echoing last volume’s review, everybody in this crew has a heavy, cast-iron nutsack. I don’t know how else to say it. I’m fully in on every “determination” speech. Nothing feels cheap and every time these dudes take a beating, I root more and more for them. Them sticking together after Bucciarati’s betrayal was a fist-pumping hell yeah moment. Predictable? Yes. Still perfectly executed? Yes. 11/10 volume.
I've not been a fan of this part of the Jojo saga so far but this volume was a step up. I'm really interested to see what is going on with Bucciarati I feel like this is a proper cliff hanger. This volume picks right up from the last and we are thrown into action scene after action scene. I have said that the artwork in this part is not as clear or as easy to understand as it has been in the past and this is especially true during the action scenes. About half way through the book we get a great twist sending the story in a new direction. This is a great choice as so far it's been rather repetitive. I have seen a couple of reviews saying they forgot why this Jojo joined the mafia in the first place and I have to admit until it was gone over again in this book it had slipped my mind. Hopefully this is the turning point in the part and we shall get back to the fantastic story telling and character/world building I have come to expect from the series.
White Ice vs Giorno & Mista is one of my favorite fights in Part 5. “White Ice Gently Weeps” is crazy btw 😭
There were some banger quotes in this volume (despite the second one listed being a bit simple): “Some say that a person makes their own fate, but over the course of our lives, we are at times thrust into situations where we are not afforded the ability to choose our right path for ourselves.” The second (and more simple) quote was from Giorno: “But only those with determination will find their path through the darkness.” He’s got the Joestar blood COURSING through his veins!!
This volume was jam packed with goodies! And I didn’t even mention Bruno vs. Emperor Crimson & Fugo refusing to betray the boss with the rest of the team. Good stuff!!
Easy 5 stars ⭐️

More developments - the boss’ stand is finally revealed, and he’s OP as hell lol. I’m still kinda surprised that Fugo just disappears from Part 5 altogether after the events at the church tbh. There is a light novel about what he does afterwards apparently though which is gonna release soon here in Australia lol, can’t wait to read that when it comes out.
Tbh I think so far I prefer the anime over the manga for this part… the voice acting and music makes the moments in the anime way more impactful imo. Still a fun enough read, though.
I guess I expected a bit too much to happen after the 4th volume. The beginning is what made me rate it 4/5. Vanilla Ice didn’t do it for me. I felt like he was put there, just so the cast doesn’t arrive to their destination easily. I know it makes sense, but it just didn’t stick out to me. It was almost half of the volume as well. But first encounter with the mafia boss was really interesting, setting off a good ending for this volume. Decent volume.

of course, the boss enemy’s stand is time related, again. u can tell araki is really tapping into his I JUST MADE SOME BULLSHITTT!!!!! philosophy in the white ice arc bc really even by jojo’s standards how did any of that happen the way it did
chapters: white ice, pt 1-7 the final orders from the boss bruno bucciarati’s childhood the mystery of emperor crimson, pt 1-6 the g in gozzo crush and talking mouth, pt 1-2

Bucciarati is strong but you know what's stronger? His Bob. It's actually insane how good Bucciarati looks no matter what he’s having to endure at the moment. A shocking twist is revealed that really amps things up in this one. I like Giorno and Bucciarati together because they always have some trick up their sleeves. That scene with Narancia and the pen hurt so much to watch!
ice fight is great (and the original stand name being white album and his power being called while my guitar gently weeps is so funny). king crimson reveal is good, DIO remix vibes. the opening of the talking head/clash fight is so funny. narancia is so silly.
If the plot wasn't relevant Ghiaccio could've wiped out everyone by himself. His stand literally defies the laws of physics- if plot didn't matter then 1000000% Giorno and Mista wouldn't have made it.

i'm a mista apologist at this point. the other characters are starting to catch my attention, but mista hands DOWN has been my favorite since the start.
