There's a big dramatic finale for the confrontation with the Scooby Gang's evil opposites in Tendo's hometown, and then the series slips back into some welcome silliness. Goofy but amusing.

Dear lord, this Manga pick a lane already. Like, why so serious?
Yet no one in the village died? The bad guys defeated - after getting some backstory.
Ok, I have read enough. Story to inconsistent. Be silly action or serious already.
Oh well.

Volume 6 wraps up the hometown arc of Zom 100, bringing some character growth and new items on our heroes' bucket list. I started reading this series before the pandemic, as a nice comedy-spiked antidote to the typical zombie fare full of despair. This volume ends on an optimistic note but the idea of putting together bucket lists after living in a pandemic for the past two years doesn't feel so strange anymore, zombies or not. (I received a free eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.)

It’s bucket list vs bucket list as Akira and his pals go up against the much more destructive impulses of Kanta and his fellow misanthropes. With the fate of the village at stake, desperate measures are called for, ones that might spell the end of Akira’s life!

Every zombie story ever written has eventually turned to or started from the base idea that man is the real evil. I said this last time in relation to this story and, as it turns out, resolving a story rooted in that premise can still be quite satisfying.

All the henpecking and dirty old men and such from before give way for a story of everybody coming together and it’s an instance where I feel that the release interval between these two volumes works to its advantage because you mostly forget the small details and annoyances and get left with the big picture.

The majority of the heroics get left to Akira and Bea, with Bea arguably coming through with the strongest (and most ridiculous) moments. Her fight against the most rigid and unflinching person on Kanta’s side goes very big and at least has a decent message about individuality amidst all the destruction.

Akira, meanwhile, is forced into an unwinnable situation by Kanta, which he solves via a solution that you can pretty much guess the second it happens, but the story at least goes to great lengths to explain how it would be possible to pull it off and mostly gets away with it.

That leaves Shizuka and Kenichiro to kind of occupy the background. I don’t love Shizuka getting damseled yet again, especially by that creepy dude (turns out that wasn’t a female at all, my bad), although he had a gun, which does add a certain terror in his favour. I will say that the resolution of this and the parts after it actually went in a somewhat unique direction that I kind of appreciated.

Kenichiro spends the whole volume covered in human waste, so that happens. The visual representation of this is something else, otherwise, I genuinely don’t have much else to say, except bravo for the godawful pun at the end.

The Kanta story ends rather depressingly, but it does have some poignant parts to it. There is a very adroit question put to him towards the end that cuts straight through to the difference between his way and Akira’s that I really appreciated. I love a good snippet of dialogue and this is one of the strongest in the series.

And if they completely deflate one plot point just for a joke, I can let that slide a little bit for the ending moment when the survivors end up all adding their own dreams to Akira’s book, greatly extending the bucket list, but now for a group of friends that has truly bonded together.

Between that list and a new direction for the crew to head out on, it promises more than a little adventure still to come, although it’s definitely going to get harder and harder to kill any remaining leads off as they become more integral to the book. The last pages are completely silly as the story gets back to goofing around and it’s a very well earned ‘letting the hair down’ moment.

Overall, a decent wrap-up to a much more robust arc than usual and some very decent writing, not to mention some of the wild crazy that this series hasn’t hit for a while now, largely courtesy of Bea. It’s certainly better than the set-up for this volume and I think it will make any re-reads land better in hindsight.

3.5 stars - I think I’ll let this one have the four stars just because it’s a satisfying conclusion to a long story and, if a little schmaltzy, reaffirms the story’s ideals of living as fully as you can.

In true shonen manga fashion, sometimes what makes protagonists the heroes is how positively they impacted the people around them.
Thankfully our little group of survivors manages to outwit or out-friend the bad guys this time because even in a village primarily full of senior citizens, they can make it through the sudden flood of the undead.
Particularly interesting is that the villains had their own "tragic flashbacks" and yet unlike One Piece, where one could genuinely feel sympathy for those suffering the sad scenes, there is no questions these horrible people were still horrible people before the plague of monsters showed them how monstrous they could be.

This volume was a solid conclusion to the current arc. I still love the characters and I'm looking forward to seeing where the next volume goes. I'm also excited for the returning characters that appear in this volume. Hope to see more of them.

Bugün on civarı çizgi roman aldım.

This series continues to strike a good balance between action, story, and humor. At times I'm cracking up and at others the feels hit. We get to see how just the tiniest difference in a life can cause a huge change in a person. It was fun to see different bucket lists depending on the person. My main complaint with this volume is that we only get 3 main chapters and 2 side chapters. The side chapters are fun but they don't advance the story much. I hope that this isn't a way to pad the story out.

Now this volume was a real blast and a half. The core part of the battling against the villains is split into three sections, since Kencho finished his last volume.

Bea's plotline felt a bit scarce as she just fights a woman with a chainsaw and then uses her smarts to get the zombies to get the waterwheel to break. She then rides the waterwheel over her opponent and tadaah, not much to be said, besides it was goofy.

Shizuka's story is a little better as she is in a scary cornfield being hunted by a loser who wants to kiss her. All the old folks are worried about how they are sore and can't help her, but then one of them reminds them that no matter how hard working in the fields was they always pushed through and because this girl helped them they should be able to do it. It makes sense they would think this way, but sort of makes our badass girl Shizuka seem a little like a damsel in distress. Her choice to save the old folks was out of character for her and she recognizes that no risk leveling was thought of, just that she wanted to help them. This is a great step for her in overcoming the way she was raised and being able to start seeing people as people and get in touch a bit with her emotions. The finale of this fight with all the popcorn going off was a treat. And made me a litte hungry.

The main emotional core of this volume rests with Akira and his father, Teruo. Akira pulls some fun makeup tricks to fool the villain Higurashi into thinking he became a zombie and then proceeds to pull him down and have a little talk about what Higurashi really wants. Turns out the loner villain just wanted to have friends but was never able to take the steps to make it happen because all he saw in the world was folks better than him. It's a sad tale and Akira gives him a hug in a very emotional moment as he turns into a zombie. It was a strong way to end the battle against the core villain group.

The celebratory part that follows was a really good one. A classic part of any good shonen series, this one had it all. The goofy twist that Teruo had hemorhoids and is afraid of the doctor was fun and fit in with the mood of the series. Now Akira feels he can pursue a vaccine for the zombies as a way to convince his dad to go to the doctor and get the hemorrhoids worked on. Just an all around silly plot point. Our other core crew members are happy with all this and add a lot of their own ideas to the bucket list which leads to them traveling all over the country in order to enjoy them. I loved getting to see them all have fun after the trials and tribulations of the arc. And the places around the world were a good addition.

This volume ends with two bonus stories, one about a dating app that had me laughing a lot, and the other about Akira's neighbors who had "died" in volume one. Turns out they're alive and want to travel the world! I'm glad to see them doing well and hope to see them enter the main story soon. They make for a really cute couple.

If you like Cosplay, Water Wheels, and convincing people to get surgeries you may like Zom100 Vol 6.

QUICK REVIEW
The finale to the Hometown arc had some strong hits and misses. I particularly enjoyed the climatic scene between the villain and Akira and thought that it was very on character. But some misses here are the other minor villains who we get a glimpse in their backstory. Unfortunately they do not illicit any sympathy or understanding of their motives. The ending has the typical Zom100 sillyness which is consistent through this story. As a bonus we are treated to a cute bonus chapters and one of them features some very minor characters making a return and I thought was a nice treat for readers.

REVIEW
This volume ends the Hometown arc and I think at the end of the volume it is satisfying. Not amazing but I would still recommend. At the end of the last volume we had a showdown with all the villains. While I do appreciate learning more about their backstories, it didnt really feel sympathy or understand their motivations. Some Shonen series have really mastered making sympathic villains this is not the case here. I did enjoy Akira outwitting the villain and felt it was a good climatic battle (and very Akira way to end the fight). After about this point it does get incredibly over the top and silly which lost me for a bit. As a nice little treat I enjoyed the ending bonus chapters and we get an unlikely return of some minor characters.

Fortunately the main group saves the day and everyone is safe, the main antagonist member falls one by one and only one is left. Why does it HAVE to be him?? (Shudders + dislike). Also the jumpscare of the father of the main protagonist did scare me but it was a false alarm. Thankfully.

Family was able to reconcile and the grandpa of the forest saves the day! Now I want to build a treehouse… now off to another zombie apocalypse adventure.

The extra ending cuts are my favourites, zombie eating the large meat 🍖 THE ONE PIECE IS REAL- and the couple who used to live underneath the protagonist apartment are alive and kicking. Not only that, the couples male has a airplane license?? 👀 travel cut scene yes please!!

Akira might pull of the riskiest rescue of the series so far as he has to choose between becoming a zombie and savings his father!?!? If you remember from last volume his father does not have long to live....this adds another layer to the volume and Akira's choice! The team battles the baddies and all the while trying to let them see the error of their ways....and I do believe some come to see where they have gone wrong. Art as always is beautiful and the story is light enough to make it a fun romp without any heavy emotions...well at least for me. Solid volume that keeps you coming back for more and I think if you have read to this volume...you are already locked in and in for the journey...no matter where it takes you!

Akira and company have a problem. Higurashi, in a jealous fit, allowed the zombies into the village. Now the crew needs to get the villagers moving to escape the zombies and stop any more from entering the valley. Plenty of action, plenty of drama, and Akira finally finds out what is wrong with his dad. Now, Akira and his crew are off to find a doctor to take care of his dad's "problem" while they are out touring Japan. Another fun read!

Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this title!

Another great volume to the series. I truly enjoy that empathy is becoming more prominent in manga. I think that's one thing I really enjoyed about Demon Slayer was no matter how evil the demon may have been, the story dives into their history and explores what caused them to tread the path of darkness. In this case the cause for their evil intent was pretty foolish, but recluses need the message in this book, don't be afraid to reach out to others.

I really liked this one!

We had a fitting conclusion to the village being overrun with zombies, got some good news and returned to them happily frolicking around seeing the sights during the apocalypse.

I suspected we’d eventually arrive at the resolve to save the world, and I appreciate it taking a while and not being a first-chapter-deal. I’m glad this series is taking an unconventionally light-hearted and downright goofy approach to an apocalyptic situation, which can also be dangerously full of cliches along with zombies.

An overanalysis of this series would have to ask the question: Are zombies more interested in a naked man's admittedly juicy ass than they are in more run-of-the-mill "foods?" Because that seems to be the implication, however it could just be that the naked man in question just enjoys displaying his juicy ass (who wouldn't, with an ass like that!?) and is the only one insisting on repeating this trick.

My only hope is that hundreds of years from now, instead of analyzing Shakespeare, scholars are analyzing Zom 100 and getting to the root of these important questions.

The conclusion of the zombie invasion / hostile destruction of Akira's home village. A lot of people died but they weren't named characters so they're deaths aren't exactly plot relevant, just a source for more zombies.

Anyway, our main characters save the day, cross off a few things on their bucket list and add about...50 more. Hey, at least we're closer to actually having 100 things on our 100 things list.

86 / 100 listed. 27 / 86 completed.

This was excellent. We've reached the conclusion of Hometown of the Dead, and they nailed it. I like how bluntly this author says what he has to say. Themes are direct, while still being fairly well thought out. The stuff about parenthood in this volume made me cry. The evil bucket list crew was interesting and, through contrast with the heroes, emphasized that nihilism doesn't have to be selfish. Great stuff

Akira continues to knock items off his bucket list as he attempts to outwit Hisiguwa and save his family. More expected nudity from you know who, and the rest of the crew start adding more to the bucket list.

I thought there were more running parts in this volume than the last two. So I’m glad the humor is picking back up. I’m hoping for even more zany zombie filled adventures in volume 7.

My new favorite volume of the manga. Zom 100 continually strikes a perfect balance between drama, action, story and humor.

Going into Zom 100 I was a bit worried due to some criticism of the manga I saw. But, Zom 100 just works for me, in ways I didn't expect.

I am pleasantly surprised with how much I am liking this.

This series, as I mentioned before, isn’t perfect but I think I’m confident in my soft spot for it. With how the zombies are, and the fact the characters are memorable this makes for a fun read. The concept of the bucket list is also something I really enjoy as it is used to continue the story, and doesn’t allow for dead space or dead panels.

I flew through this volume. We were able to see the conclusion of the battle for the village. Akira learned about his father's illness, and it was all very emotional. And then it was funny. Honestly, I love how ridiculous this manga is. It's literally about a zombie apocalypse but silly and funny. I've already requested the next volume.

Well, the tough choice facing Akira in the last volume is finally resolved, and the final battle with Kanta for the parents' village takes up most of this chapter. Akira and friends finally close the home village arc, add a few more items to their bucket list, and hit the road once again.

Humorous post-zombie apocalypse fun, it's good to have Akira and friends back travelling.

By far the most serious chapter in the series so far, but it has a satisfying conclusion and leaves a lot to hope for in future installments of Zom 100 which can go literally anywhere. Makes me excited for the future of the manga as it quickly became one of my favorites. :)
