Devil’s Candy, the popular webcomic by Rem and Bikkuri, is a hilarious action-adventure that follows Kazu Decker and his science experiment, Pandora, as they navigate high school with a ghoulish supernatural twist.
At Hemlock Heart Academy, science wiz Kazu Decker shows off his skills by creating a humanoid girl named Pandora. But in a world of monsters and mayhem, surviving high school is harder than getting good grades and lessons often turn violent at Hemlock. Fortunately for them, Pandora’s stoic nature and seemingly limitless strength, paired with Kazu’s luck, knowledge and friends, get them out of trouble almost as often as it gets them mixed up in it!
Kazu is having a hard time getting used to Pandora’s growing independence when an elite rival academy, Sacred Crown, challenges the ill-matched students of Hemlock Heart to a violent game of Eggscram. Pandora’s unlimited strength soon gets recognized by a society of sinister daemons and now it’s not just Kazu who wants Pandora’s attention. Is Pandora prepared to take the step from schoolyard skirmishes into the wrath of the daemon world?
I took twice as long to finish this one because I kept getting caught up with looking at each page and marveling over all the details.
Story-wise, I’m not sure where it’s going, but I’m happy to just stick around for the ride. I can never guess how a chapter is going to end because there’s always something that catches me by surprise.
I also like that the story doesn’t revolve around a singular character. Rather than jamming one character into each storyline, the authors take the time to develop some of the secondary characters, which I really appreciate. This cast of characters is just so diverse; I really do want to learn more about everyone involved!
I’m really intrigued with the world building. While reading through the extras and lore blurbs at the end of the volume I was impressed with how much thought when into each aspect of “Devil’s Candy”. It’s executed and explored so well; it really gives you the feeling that this is a well fleshed-out world that the characters are in. They show you just enough in the comic to pique your interest.
I absolutely adore this series 😭💖 It's spooky, silly, and cute. Literally laughing out loud through the entire book. And so many cool and unique character designs!
I gave this a 3, because bailing on this book wasn't due to any egregious flaw or shortcoming. I just couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters and thus the stories.
Everyone is just very terribly generic and forgettable. You got the passive protagonist, the straight man, the silent bad ass, and the love interest. That's really the extend of their character, though the author hints at more depth it doesn't really show itself at all.
The character design is neat, the art is solid. If you just want a spooky themed high school comedy manga it might do the job for you, just don't expect anything more complex out of it.
Okay, so this came together well! The first volume was fun, but kinda all over the place; this volume was more cohesive. It was nice to get to hang out with some of the other characters this time, and let Kazu and Pandora have smaller parts. We get a better feel for the world, and we get some more serious situations for the characters to deal with. Also, there's cute guys with horns (what?!? I've got a type, sorry/not sorry)!
I really can't say how much I enjoy this series. It's cute, funny, and really, really well done. If you're not reading this, you should. It's fun and it's got monsters in it, what more could you possibly want?
I love that they gave Nemo the feature of not having transent skin when he's wet or in water! I also love the little child version of Kazu in the flashback he was so adorable!!

While I really enjoyed the first volume and was excited to see where the story went in this second volume it felt like way more of a filler piece than anything else.
I guess I thought it would continue to focus on Kazu and Pandora and maybe feature some new characters. I was not anticipating essentially a brand new cast of characters front running everything. I honestly couldn't keep up with certain things and some of the plot lines felt rushed.
I wasn't a fan of the new Kazu and Pandora strife. It felt very manipulative from both sides and seemingly out of no where.
I still enjoyed it to a point. But definitely had different hopes for it.
Thank you to Viz Media and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the first volume of this when I picked it up as a little Halloween read, because I thought the art was cute and the story was fun.
I picked up volume 2 excited to see what would happen next and while the art was still really cute and fun, as were the characters, I did struggle a little to get through this volume. I was actually debating DNFing it, mostly because of chapter 4, I think it was, with the game. Things did pick up a little after that but I'm not sure whether or not I"ll pick up the next volume after this. I just found it a bit slow and hard to get into and I wasn't that bothered about what was happening.
A great sequel to volume one! It takes place in a fantastical daemon world and I found it really interesting seeing how things were adapted for that world. For example, cars have spider/bug legs, the characters' lifestyles, etc.
Like the first volume, the story didn't have much depth. It was cute, funny, it had action, the illustrations were well drawn and the story had a good flow. I enjoyed reading a manga with that type of fantasy. The characters were as quirky as ever and they didn't lose their charm at all.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I recommend it to everyone!
This volume has gotten a great deal darker though it opens with a chaotic game of basically keep-away until an egg hatched.
I like the story best when it focuses on Kazu, Pandora, Nemo, and Hitomi. A bunch of new characters were introduced and a side character got the spotlight, but I didn’t care too much for it. The artwork is still excellent as usual, but when so much is going on it can get confusing.
Again, great visuals, but overall not a lot of story. Also I don't get why the characters aren't older because clearly the artist likes drawing hot characters. As a negative did I mention that the names are terrible?
I liked this book better than the first one in the series, and it nearly made me cry by the end. I also love that the author combined manga with several informative sections detailing unseen facts about the characters. Looking forward to reading the 3rd book!
still one of my fave graphic novels! love getting to know more about more characters (shout-out to the mob 😈) and ofc the art is so so gorgeous, I adore the gothic horror/creepy vibes that the Devil’s Candy universe is in, 🥀🪦, I hope we can get more Hitomi in the next book
