Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve. Luckily she meets Tadano, a timid wallflower who decides to step out of his comfort zone in order to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends.

Komi and her friends are going on a ski trip! Who cares if only some of them actually know how to conquer the slopes. The point is to have fun and show off their winter fashions! But things take a turn for the awkward when Manbagi and Tadano get left behind and have to spend the night in snow country. The only inn around is expensive, but worse than that, there’s only one room!

Komi and Manbagi continue to slowly and shyly vie for Tadano's affections in their love triangle, with one maybe having a slight accidental breakthrough. The future will tell.

Meanwhile too much time still feels stolen away to touch on Komi's dozens of friends who are becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate by their sheer number. The gift giving and snowboarding sequences would have been better with a smaller group of secondary characters who had more time to be developed more fully.

This is gets the rating of 3.5 stars.

It is convenient to have the entirety of the Snow Trip arc plus the epilogue in this single volume. Rumiko has proven to be the catalyst to transition this school slice-of-life title into a budding romance.

Just a perfect volume. The FACES. Just the emotion and expressions blast off the page while the tension keeps ramping up. I love this title so much, and this volume had everything. Slope magic is real.

Another volume and Komi is in-Komi-nicado once more. A ski trip turns into a fashion forward event and a chance for her and Tadano to grow closer. Then Tadano winds up in the old ‘we have to stay overnight in a room’ trope, but with Manbagi, so it’s actually super adorable.

“Another volume” really sums this one up in the old nutshell. The first sequence focuses on Komi trying to repay various people for her group birthday girder some time ago and is a cute, if unremarkable, bit of business.

Of course, Yamai is involved so it immediately gets fouled out. I begrudgingly admit that I did like one panel that basically draws her like a Junji Ito-style horror, but I have no sympathy for that devil.

The bulk of the story revolves around a snowboarding trip organized by Manbagi, which turns into a rather ridiculous excuse to show off the cast in snowboarding gear (especially the ladies, in case you forgot what you were reading) and for some silly jokes.

Most of what I like here is the character work. Tadano and Komi have some nice moments, but there’s a surprisingly enjoyable ski lift ride later with Ase and Tadano that lets her ruminate on Naruse. This being one of my favourite background stories in the series, it was a welcome addition.

Around this point we start to see the perpetual failing of the series, which is that some of us can never remember who is who and what their gimmick is. For characters like Ase and Naruse, no sweat (sorry, not sorry), but when you start bringing in cast that feature less frequently it loses a lot, especially since the translation can’t lean on the wordplay the Japanese version does as shorthand.

The subsequent section where Manbagi and Tadano wind up stranded is a hoot, largely because the two of them have really great chemistry (they even think alike leading up to the trip) and Manbagi is such a sweetheart.

Some of the art here is really cute too - there’s a 4-panel of Manbagi inching across a bed that is very well done and feels like one of the most enjoyably strong pages I’ve read in a manga recently. It’s nothing special, but just done so well and conveys a lot.

It’s basically everything you’d want from a story like this, including parental and sibling interference (I love the implication that Manbagi’s grandmother is very, erm, encouraging) and one particularly awkward admission that not only isn’t meant to be heard, but later on leads to one of the most idiotic (and possibly really good) masturbation jokes I’ve seen in a while.

And I guess the other downside is that Manbagi is so much more interesting than Komi, which I always say when stuff like this happens, and the series isn’t called Manbagi Can’t Communicate, so she can’t win in the end, if you care about such things (even the cast know she’s the third wheel).

It’s definitely fun, but everything I like the most about this series tends to be the things that the mangaka doesn’t and vice-versa, so it’s often a bit of a dance to meet somewhere in the middle of my expectations and what’s ever going to be on offer.

3.5 stars - round down if you don’t like prime Manbagi content. For a gag book this isn’t quite as funny as I’d like, though it’s definitely above average. But Yamai appears, so, per my rules, an automatic 3 by default.

Time for some "ski-slope magic."

As the gang takes an overnight bus into the mountains for a day or two of skiing and snowboarding, readers earn another badge of curiosity insofar as what new weird talents the secondary cast is hoarding from everyone else. Apparently, Kometani (the commentator guy) and Ase (the sweaty girl) are snowboarding experts. (Technically, Osana is, too, but she doesn't really count, does she?) In any case, KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v20 is a breezy winter-vacation-themed volume. On the plus side, Manbagi fans finally get some juicy gossip on which to ruminate.

Assorted antics aside, the book's focus on narrowing the gap between kind-hearted gyaru Rumiko Manbagi and Mr. Average is worth the time. That is to say, Manbagi's lack of balance while learning to snowboard, Manbagi's utter panic at the prospect of a snowstorm, and Manbagi's tendency to tremble and bawl the second she forgets the smallest detail of their trip all have a snowball effect: This girl is a serious mess when she doesn't have someone to hold on to.

Tadano's cool-headed compassion is nothing new, but this volume of the manga gives the character the opportunity to focus that compassion on someone who stridently needs it. Manbagi's a smart girl, but she gets rattled easily. Better to have a kind guy with a flowery cowlick to explain things than to spiral through numerous what-if scenarios. And that's the charm of how KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v20 handles the Manbagi-Tadano dynamic. Manbagi enjoys the young man's company because, unlike others, he isn't overly concerned with trying to convince everyone he's likable. Tadano is Tadano.

Broadly speaking, the manga feeds off of its many characters' eccentricities in stark contrast to Tadano's comically sterile blandness. But every once in a while, readers encounter a chapter or two that explore why being simple, common, or bland, sometimes, is precisely what makes for a good friend.

Plus Tadanon sisko on... hieman liian likainen mieleltään ( ಠ ͜ʖ ಠ)

I loved when Hitohito and Rumiko got stranded after the ski trip there was so much going on actually the whole ski trip in general was fun to read about.

I'm so proud of Shoko she's really come so far in her communication. She actually talks to Rumiko, Hitohito and sometimes the others so much more than she used to. I think she talks the most with Rumiko and that's really so cute.

Another laugh out loud volume with Tadano and Manbagi getting a tad closer? Or at least he’s beginning to notice her liking of him. Yet, my favorite chapter was Tadano’s parents flashback to when they were on the slopes. Too damn cute! Love them early stories of their courtship.

Honestly...I'm getting kind of bored? It's just the same story, over and over again...I'm just waiting for Komi and Tadano to admit they like each other, but since I'm assuming that won't happen until the end of the manga, I'm struggling to remain interested.

Better than I was expecting, based on some comments, the whole snow trip and events surrounding it were pretty fun and somehow moved the story onwards, especially with the addition of that ending.

Fun overall (as per usual), thankfully not a lot of side stories and characters; enjoyed Naruse, Ase and Katai, and the short strip-like episodes.

Another pleasant entry in the series. The part where they’re all eating crab gave me a hankering for some crab. Hope I can eat some crab soon.

Better than the last few volumes, mainly because we had more Komi x Tadano ship moments and I saw some of my old fave side characters- Otori and Onemine (also some ship moments) and some of the whole gang moments I miss from the earlier volumes. Speaking of the old gang, wtf happened to our original trio of Komi, Tadano, Najimi? Najimi is barely in it now. I do really wish they start focusing more on the fan fave characters and less on the newer characters no one cares about. Also, Komi made no new friends this volume so no progress there. I am still disliking the whole love triangle set up with Komi x Tadano x Manbagi, I have been set on Komi x Tadano from the start and I refuse to change ships now. I love Manbagi but give her someone else please. The whole only one bed trope is overused and I didn’t love it being included. I just want more ship moments plssss

I love “Komi Can’t Communicate”. I was introduced to it via the Netflix anime and was desperate to know what happens in Komi and Tadano’s second year of High School. I was not disappointed! Komi’s goal to make 100 friends is such a sweet journey and Tadano is just the cutest character. I love characters that are shy and quiet because I relate to them more. Later in the series other characters are obviously introduced, some that I’m not too keen on, not because they are bad characters, I’m just not a fan of them.

there's an authenticity to the way tomohito oda writes really weird teens without being cruel about how weird they are. there's the sense that she really loves these characters, and wants to explore different characters and dynamics that haven't previously been looked at with any nuance in most of the genre before.

This was a cute volume, and I quite enjoyed the ski saga. Notched it down another star because some of the sexual undertones felt strange... and considering the characters are minors (one of them much younger even), I don't appreciate it at all. And what's up with the cover of this volume...
