He's been accused of being far too blunt. Like that time he accused her of stealing her company from her best friend... Can Travis and Shayla overcome their differences and find a happily-ever-after together?
Travis Cooper is the youngest son in a family stuffed with loud opinions and ginger-haired powerhouses. Yes, he has a loud bark too. He has to in order to get the ten thousand dairy cows he's responsible for to listen to him.
But when he happens upon Shayla Nelson stranded on the side of the road, he probably doesn't need to tell her A - that he used to date her best friend, and B - that Shayla stole her successful outdoor outfitters company from that best friend.
Besides the fact that it's not true, Travis should know better. And he does, honestly. He was just flustered that his most recent girlfriend had broken up with him only the day before.
Shayla not only didn't steal the company from her former best friend, she's worked hard to mend the bridges between her and everyone that had gotten hurt in that tangled mess. When she runs into Travis again a few months later, there's still plenty of sparks flying between them.
This time, though, it's the romantic kind and not the accusatory type. When he asks her to be his date to the annual Fall Ball in Sweet Water Falls, Shayla finds herself wanting to say yes to the handsome cowboy.
He's never had a relationship for longer than a couple of months. She won't be able to put up with his attitude for long, but can Shayla tame the cross cowboy and capture his heart, or will she have to cut Travis loose the way every other woman has?
3-time USA Today bestselling author Elana Johnson writes adult contemporary beach romance. She is the author of over 130 books across two names, and there's nothing better than sun, sand, and swoon-worthy kisses! Unless it's a sweet-and-sexy cowboy - read those under her pen name of Liz Isaacson. Or an emotional, heartfelt women's fiction novel - read those under her pen name of Jessie Newton.
To the girl on TikTok that said this book was spicy I feel sorry for you. That was about as spicy as dry humping in the 10th grade. The story line was meh so that didn’t even make up for it.
Honestly I did not like their relationship one bit. They just don’t communicate! The miscommunication was like the whole plot! The only reason it is a 2 stars is because I love the small town aspect
This is a fun story with Travis and Shay and how they navigate a relationship. Travis has a great family and I love the different characters. This is a clean read.

Cross Cowboy: Cooper Brothers is book 1 in the new series Sweet Water Falls Farm series by Elena Johnson and a nice start to this series. Can’t wait for more of the Cross Brothers book!
Sheila Nelson and Travis Cooper… two people who don’t do relationships and are workaholics but it seems sparks fly whenever they run into each other.
With tempers flailing, family, opinionated, with hearts full of love for the right person…just a few of what is happening in this book…
I'm going to include why I DNF this. • random POVs of Travis' siblings and their future pairings (assumably). seriously random. I think I was around chapter 10/11 when suddenly we get his brother's POV after consistent dual POVs. • telling and not showing. the majority of this book I felt like I was being told they went on a date or had an interaction instead of shown it. • boring characters. probably has to do with the telling and not showing bullet, but I feel nothing for these people aside from boredom.
4.5 stars. Very cute and clean romance. I liked learning about the family relationships and not just two people getting to know each other. I look forward to the next book.
Cross Cowboy is an entertaining read that will suck you in the story and make you feel like you are there. The Coopers have 3 sons that are single. They're like Snow White's dwarfs. Grumpy, Grumpier, Grumpiest. They are loud and say what they think without a filter. The youngest son, Travis met Shayla Nelson, owner of Sweetspot, the outdoor supply store newly opened in Sweet Water Falls. They have a run in at the feed store and when she comes back out he has left a note on her windshield. They start texting and talking and start dating. Since Travis met her several months ago on the side of the road and drove her to town, he left a bitter taste in her mouth about Kylie, her previous friend and co-owner of Sweetspot. Travis had dated Kylie and just before she packed up and left town she said Shayla stole Sweetspot from her. Travis wanted the story from Shayla as to what happened this time.
Travis dates lasted approximately 2 months at best. He decided this time he is going to think before he spoke and take it slow. He even told Shayla to call him out if he got cross with her. They were a good couple as he was a farmer, milked cows 4 shifts a day. She being the owner of Sweetspot she worked sometimes late or had emergencies come up. They make a way to try to see if they could see each other each day if only for a short time. The holidays are coming up and when they go to her parent's Halloween party they run into her last boyfriend that tells Travis he will be an ex boyfriend soon like him. Now Travis is concerned about what he is talking about and Shayla doesn't want to talk about it. Their relationship after that takes a sharp hit and Travis cannot understand why. Well he almost made it to 3 months. . . . . . .
Fantastic story! Characters that will steal your heart. A storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat and glued to your kindle! For me it was a love- hate deal as the characters face their demons. You will feel their emotions and struggles. A definite must read.

One grumbly and oh so handsome cowboy with a not so good record with the ladies meets a lovely, independent and successful business woman with an equally bad dating record. Despite their confrontational first meeting, Travis decides to ask Shayla to the Fall Ball, and she actually agrees as long as they go out on a date before the ball. The fact that Travis is a little awkward and unfiltered makes him much more relatable. Shayla certainly enjoys these traits and the fact that he is a gentleman. Things start slow, but it doesn’t take long for both to realize they have a real connection and are really falling for each other. But their own insecurities and Rocky romantic pasts as well as their dedication to their work seem to raise roadblocks to finding their own happily ever after. Will this relationship end like all of their previous relationships or will they forge a future together?
I loved the characters in this book, even his brothers who unmercifully teased Travis and who were always fighting. The storyline was sweet, charming and entertaining. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
While I enjoyed the story and liked both the lead characters and their families, at times I felt as though I was missing some information. Travis really hated doing a certain thing and there seems to be a story there but he doesn’t explain his reasons. I also don’t understand why Shayla seemed to feel her family was inferior in some way to Travis’ family. Her hangup with her parents was never addressed so I just felt as though there were missing pieces to the story. Perhaps these were addressed in an earlier book that I didn’t read?
What I did like was the book showcased two attractive, successful people who one would think would have no trouble in the romance department, yet actually were rather inept and awkward at dating. I thought the social clumsiness could have been played up a bit more, which would have made it more interesting. I enjoyed the book but not as much as other books of hers I’ve read.

Great first book! Shayla owns an outfitter store and had a mysterious split with her cousin for the business. Travis and his two brothers and sister live and work a huge family owned dairy farm in Texas. There first meet when he rescues her from the side of the road when her car breaks down. He wasn’t very cordial to her as he was dating her cousin before she left town. Being somewhat isolated on the farm, all three brothers tend to be loud, outspoken and unruly missing many of the social niceties. Well, when he runs into Shay at the feed store he thinks he wants to ask her to the ball he sees advertised on a flyer. Neither of them have extensive dating history and sometimes things become awkward. Throw in some misunderstandings and miscommunication. Now you got problems. As expected, this was very well written with well developed characters and a deep love of family. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Romance, sweet, contemporary, western; series but stand alone read Travis and Shayla's story was a lovely sweet, western small town romance. The dairy and town settings merged together sweetly and loved seeing the growth between the two characters as they worked, dated, got to know each other, and worked through their moments of miscommunication, and their weaknesses and worries to become a lovely couple. Travis' loud family, the dynamics there, and Shayla's past history and connection to Travis' former girlfriend, the family support from Travis' family, and all of the small moments that built their relationship as a couple, helped them get to know one another, and open their hurting hearts to each other to build a lovely relationship. Perfect small town, farm/ranch and family romance. Can't wait to read the others that will come in this series. EJ writes these novels so well. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review, my opinion is my own.
There was so much wrong with this book, I wanted to dnf it every 5 pages.
For starters, there is no plot. Like nothing happens, there is nothing that makes you want to keep reading it.
The characters were sooo simple, they had almost no personality, and if they had, it could be discribed in one word. Travis was "blunt" but literally said nothing ever. His brothers were "grumpy" but everyone was just being rude to each other. Shayla had no personality other than her work, but even that, we almost never see her work or do anything.
The whole thing felt rushed and also impossibly slow, the scenes you wanted to read about were like 1 page long and then there was 10 pages of NOTHING interesting.
Also really weird, it felt like the author wanted to introduce characters in the last like 10 pages and make us like them? I did not like any character, except maybe Trav's mom because she was just an averega character and STILL she was the most interesting.
I liked how the male MC set his boundaries and stuck to them towards the end. The female MC was clueless as fuck and had her head stuck up her own ass and he didn’t need to deal with her bologna.
His family is full of assholes and the eldest doesn’t appreciate his brothers. I was kinda curious to keep reading in the series to see him get knocked down a peg or two.
The fem MC was incredibly selfish towards the end and used work as an excuse, but I feel like that was pretty realistic, as annoying as it was to read about.
I don’t know why this book flipped perspectives between the other brothers and the MCs. I was listening to the audiobook and kept getting confused about who was talking to who and how they all felt about each other. I also don’t get why other character’s love stories were starting on top of the MC’s. Maybe if it was all funneled through the MC’s perspectives. But I didn’t need a front row seat through the sibling perspectives.
Elana does it again, she draws us in with this unlikely family of farmers. Travis is part of the Cooper family, his sister had her story, and it was also great, but Travis's story makes us more invested in this family. They are hard workers, they are loud and in each other's business. They are lovable and wonderful, mama is their soft spot!! The Coopers are farmers and work a lot of hours.
Shayla has her own business too, and she also works a ton of hours and has her own set of issues!!
I felt like this pair was unlikely, yet worked perfectly two strong willed and minded people with HUGE job commitments. I loved to see Travis's softer side and Shay's too! These two have chemistry and it is a great read about how they maneuver through all their feeling and commitments! This is a clean book, can be read alone with out having read the one before, and no cliff hangers.
Travis works on the family ranch, he's in charge of milking and calls all the cows, Bertha! He's the youngest brother, Lee is the eldest and Will is the middle one. Their father is a redheaded Irish man, from whom they all get their tempers! Their mother has cancer and they all take care of her but especially Travis. Shayla runs an outdoor leisure company, she meets Travis when he rescues her off the side of the road, he was very rude to her. She meets him again at the farm supply shop, where he's blocking the way. He leaves her a very cryptic message, which is so cryptic she doesn't understand it! He asks her to the ball and they carry on seeing each other, but it's not easy, he has a temper and is quite abrupt and she's working all hours to keep her business running.
Travis and Shayla have very short relationships in their pasts and can not seem to get one that lasts. When they connect as she is stranded along the road, they do not get along at all. Travis had been dating her cousin before the women split and Shayla took over the outfitter company. Miscommunication plays a large part of this story and it is not just about the company. Both need to work on their social interactions and learn to support the other. The characters are well done with intense feelings and emotions. The storyline has drama, romance, surprises and twists. Family proves to be the one thing that is most important to them. Loved the banter and the open hearts that are accepting and true. Great ending and can not wait to read about his two brothers finding love.

This is the first book by Elana Johnson that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved Travis and Shayla’s story. Elana shows her talent in the writing of this book and the development of the characters. This book is a small town romance that you will enjoy reading a s Sweet Water Falls if full of surprises with the Cooper brothers and their interest what they want for their future life. It will make you laugh and shake your head as they try to give meaning to their lives. I highly recommend this book about families and a small town that is so real. I am sure you will enjoy it as the characters are so believable and it has a HEA. I cannot wait for the next book and which brother will find his someone special.

This is the first story in Elena Johnson's Sweet Water Falls Farm Series. This series centers around the Cooper family and their journeys to finding their HEA.
Book one is all about Travis and Shayla. Travis is a cowboy through and through. He has a lot of responsibilities on his family farm and has had no luck in love, in fact even though he's dated none of his relationships have even made the 3-month mark. Travis falls hard and fast which might have something to do with why women keep running away.
Shayla is a business owner who has no time for life because she's always at work. She makes excuses about why she can't do things and overthinks almost every interaction she has with Travis and his family...and her own family.
They do find their way to a HEA but there are a few bumps in the road along the way.
This is book one in the Cooper Brothers series. The Cooper family is red headed and outspoken. They can be blunt, but they love each other. The family owns a large farm. This is Travis' story. Travis is the youngest son. He is in charge of the dairy portion of the farm. He doesn't date much because his date will always tell him that he's too blunt and works too much.
He invites Shayla to the fall ball. Shayla and her best friend/business partner split 4 years ago and she's been trying to run her business on her own. She works a lot of hours too.
Travis has to learn to be considerate and not so blunt. Shayla needs to decide if she is married to her job or if she wants to date Travis.
The only thing that could've made this better was maybe a tighter focus on the particular MCs. I want to know about the other characters...just not in this story. I will keep reading the series as I'm able because I enjoy this author's work. This story will probably end up as maybe my third favorite in the series, but we'll see. I had a bit of trouble relating to the heroine, though she and the other characters did come across as people who could actually exist. The hero was much easier to relate to with his particular struggle with temper and speaking his mind. He was sweet, though. If you enjoy sweet, clean, contemporary romance with a dash of faith then try this book.
This is a clean, fun read book 1 about Travis Cooper (who has a fabulous, realistic family) and Shayla Nelson (she owns an outdoor supply store), they both are workaholics. The Cooper family has 3 brothers and all seem grumpy. Travis is the youngest. This is a clean sort of love story where there are tempers going, stubbornness and opinionated family members. There were a few boring moments in this book, but it seemed like a typical family for the most part. As the book goes along it keeps you on the edge of your seat. You see and feel the emotions of the characters. Looking forward to future books with the Cooper family. I enjoyed it but will not spoil it if Travis and Shayla can overcome their struggles and have a happily ever after...you'll have to read to see.
Didn’t finish after chapter 11. I skimmed a lot to get to that point. It’s fine. It’s like a hallmark movie so it’s a little cheesy with a matronly type feel. The two characters like each other. They’re both fine. Forgettable. They date and I can’t see any passion or chemistry. Nothing is happening. Then it all of the sudden switches to two totally different peoples povs and a different love story. It was jarring. It’s not horrible I just am not invested in the characters or their lack luster romance. Also I just can’t get on Howard with him calling his dad “daddy” haha. Every time he does it just makes me think of a young girl’s nickname for her older boyfriend lol. I cringed every time lol
It starts with seeing a former friend stranded on side of road, but he picks her up and puts foot in his mouth. This is a sweet and clean with no drama story. He is a dairy farmer (sequels will be about his brothers) who starts out with little time available. She owns a sports equipment store that she now owns alone due to issues with her former partner which was his friend who is no longer around. The story tells how he learns to be better at relationships and clears up her reputation from the business breakup. Ends with a cruise out of Galveston. I have cruised from there and it misrepresents boarding ships there, especially relative to the care and concern cruiselines have for disabled passengers.
I was disappointed I didnt enjoy Cross Cowboy by Elana Johnson more, as I went in with high hopes. Unfortunately, I found the characters challenging to like or respect. The main characters, both the MMC and FMC, had odd chemistry and often acted or said things that just felt off to me. This led to a lot of moments where I found myself frowning or questioning their choices, which ultimately took away from my enjoyment of the story. The narrator also didn’t quite work for me, which added to my overall feelings.
Despite this, I plan to give the next book in the series a chance, though I’ll be going in with lower expectations. If it doesn’t resonate, I might be more inclined to DNF.
Welcome to Sweet Water Falls Farm! Travis is a part of the family dairy business and is responsible for the milking of thousands of cows every day. Shayla owns her own outdoor outfitters company that she has built from nothing. Their work and dedication to that work makes it hard for them to find time for each other. Both of them have families with huge personalities. Can they change their priorities to have a relationship with each other? Don’t miss this latest clean romance from Elana Johnson. You will be able to catch up with Spencer and Clarissa from Risky Cowboy and meet the Cooper brothers that makeup this new series. You will love it!
What a great start to a new series. I admit to being partial to Elana Johnson books, especially those set in my native state of Texas. I love that the Cooper brothers and sisters are all 30 and up, not everyone gets married young (for me, 30’s is young). I can already tell that this family is going to become my friends and my heart is going to break when the series is over. Travis and Shayla aren’t star-crossed lovers, perhaps insecurity crossed lovers. The real question is can these two workaholics find time to date much less build a relationship. Okay we know they do but you have to keep reading to make sure.
