Since the publication of the first edition in 1983, this course has established itself as the most practical, comprehensive text in the field and become widely used in many parts of the world in universities and other institutions of higher education. This new edition takes into account recent developments in the teaching of phonology. It includes updated references, fuller coverage of intonation, and a new chapter on different varieties of English with illustrative recorded material. At the end of each chapter in the book there are notes giving information on further reading, discussion of the more challenging issues, written exercises and, where appropriate, suggestions for teachers. In addition the audio CDs include recorded exercises for every chapter which are particularly helpful for non-native speakers. A full answer key is available at the back of the book. Additional exercises and other supporting material are available online.
Although at times I wanted to pull my hair out while reading this, it is still a very thorough guide when it comes to breaking language down to its most basic roots. A must-read for anyone interested in the building blocks of language.
I want to kill any one who tells me that phonetics is an interesting branch, this faculty leads me to madness and I'll hate all things I like and one of them is phonetics. If I read this book in other circumstances, I would get a lot of benefits. Any way it's so useful but if you read it in calm mood and without stress of faculty and exams.
I don't normally add my textbooks to Goodreads but this one is just so awesome!! I mean, how many textbooks are out there that can be described as 'awesome'? I'm not saying that it's perfect, or the most reliable source, but it did an amazing job on making me fall in love with Phonology and Linguistics and I am forever grateful.
To be honest, I didn't finish this book (because I didn't have to read everything for my study). I quite enjoyed it, but some things were a little hazy (I still don't understand "word stress" and "sentence stress" (or whatever it was called), all I know is that is caused me to STRESS). If you want to learn more about phonetics and phonology, I think this is a good book for you; just take your time when you read it. Xx
This book was extremely helpful in conducting the research needed to write my B-level essay in linguistics (focusing on pronunciation and differences between American accents).
a complete basic course in Eng. phnetics & phonology that bridges the gap between simple pronouciation handboks & serious textbooks! 2 me it can be used by both native & non-native speakers, who may be training 2 teach Eng. or studying the lg. technically. presenting the basic factual info. & crucial theoretical issues in a practical way easily, the book includes 20 chapters.
I got this ebook, and it is very helpful. eventhough ive got several phonology books, I recommended this English Phonetics and Phonology for those who really want to know more about Phonology.
This is very helpful for those who want to examine English pronunciation. I am a seninor student of TESOL and this is one of the best books about English Language I've read.
Not this one. 英汉比较语音学 = English phonetics and phonology _ as compared with -- 赵德梅编著, Zhao Demei bian zhu, Li Yuchen zhu shen -- 1995, 1995 -- 青岛_青岛海洋大学出版社 -- 9787810267960
Very good study material and I really like it actually. It helped me a lot when I was asked to "revise" things that I didn't take at college. I understood everything just from reading. Also, applying what I read in the exercises was very helpful. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about phonetics and Phonology.
