I liked the way Aang resolves the issue. Airbending culture is really fascinating and there is a lot that real-world readers can learn from it.
It's interesting that the the vandals thought that Aang would take their bending away. His reputation as the Avatar includes not just the benevolent keeper of peace but also the harshness of taking away a significant aspect of a person's identity. As revealed in Imablance, removing someone's bending is removing a part of themsevles. It is a kind of violence that for some is worse that death. Bending is a part of the distinguishing factor that marks the cultural identities of the four nations. It is not just as element that people bend, it is a way of life. That is why Iroh teaches the symbolism of each element. You even see it in the way they live their lives.

I guess the point was "slice of life" type of thing, but it just seemed too trivial and since the point was "remembering Aang's wisdom and kindness" or something like that, it fell short.
