Schulz's first regular cartoons, Li'l Folks, were published from 1947 to 1950 by the St. Paul Pioneer Press; he first used the name Charlie Brown for a character there, although he applied the name in four gags to three different boys and one buried in sand. The series also had a dog that looked much like Snoopy. In 1948, Schulz sold a cartoon to The Saturday Evening Post; the first of 17 single-panel cartoons by Schulz that would be published there. In 1948, Schulz tried to have Li'l Folks syndicated through the Newspaper Enterprise Association. Schulz would have been an independent contractor for the syndicate, unheard of in the 1940s, but the deal fell through. Li'l Folks was dropped from the Pioneer Press in January, 1950.
Later that year, Schulz approached the United Feature Syndicate with his best strips from Li'l Folks, and Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950. The strip became one of the most popular comic strips of all time. He also had a short-lived sports-oriented comic strip called It's Only a Game (1957–1959), but he abandoned it due to the demands of the successful Peanuts. From 1956 to 1965 he contributed a single-panel strip ("Young Pillars") featuring teenagers to Youth, a publication associated with the Church of God.
Peanuts ran for nearly 50 years, almost without interruption; during the life of the strip, Schulz took only one vacation, a five-week break in late 1997. At its peak, Peanuts appeared in more than 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries. Schulz stated that his routine every morning consisted of eating a jelly donut and sitting down to write the day's strip. After coming up with an idea (which he said could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours), he began drawing it, which took about an hour for dailies and three hours for Sunday strips. He stubbornly refused to hire an inker or letterer, saying that "it would be equivalent to a golfer hiring a man to make his putts for him." In November 1999 Schulz suffered a stroke, and later it was discovered that he had colon cancer that had metastasized. Because of the chemotherapy and the fact he could not read or see clearly, he announced his retirement on December 14, 1999.
Schulz often touched on religious themes in his work, including the classic television cartoon, A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965), which features the character Linus van Pelt quoting the King James Version of the Bible Luke 2:8-14 to explain "what Christmas is all about." In personal interviews Schulz mentioned that Linus represented his spiritual side. Schulz, reared in the Lutheran faith, had been active in the Church of God as a young adult and then later taught Sunday school at a United Methodist Church. In the 1960s, Robert L. Short interpreted certain themes and conversations in Peanuts as being consistent with parts of Christian theology, and used them as illustrations during his lectures about the gospel, as he explained in his bestselling paperback book, The Gospel According to Peanuts, the first of several books he wrote on religion and Peanuts, and other popular culture items. From the late 1980s, however, Schulz described himself in interviews as a "secular humanist": “I do not go to church anymore... I guess you might say I've come around to secular humanism, an obligation I believe all humans have to others and the world we live in.”

«Пуцьвірінки» (анг. Peanuts) — це невід’ємна частина американської культури, як-то бейсбол, хот-доги чи то індичка на День Подяки. Конкурувати за популярністю з Чарлі Брауном та Снупі може хіба що Мікі Маус та Ґуфі. Пуцьвірінки завдячують своїй появі Чарльзу М. Шульцу, дебютувавши в 1950 році у відомій американській періодиці, на кшталт The Washington Post та The Boston Globe. А вже до середини 60-х ці чотирипанельні стріпи набули неймовірної популярності, і до 2000 року нараховувалося майже 18 000 випусків.
Вам може здатися, що «Пуцьвірінки» — це милий, дитячий комікс про веселих дітлахів, але насправді Шульц творив для дорослої авдиторії, зображуючи дітей у своєму коміксі максимально серйозними, тоді як дорослих навспак по-дитячому безпосередніми та безтурботними.

Growing up I never read Peanuts because I was born and raised in India and we used to regional paper. I still sometimes struggle to understand the dynamics of the group but it is still enjoyable comics.

Сьогодні я прочитала і прокайфувала дитячий комікс. І тут складно сказати наскільки він дитячий, бо деякі сюжети звучать аж надто доросло.
Мій фаворит (насправді їх було багато, описувати можна кожен) — історія про пластівці, які розмокли. Дитина тільки сіла снідати, залила їх молоком і тут дзвінок. Вона слухає ага ага ага, а коли повертається вже не сніданок а каша.
Мені це дуже знайомо. Я не люблю телефонні дзвінки. Вони вибивають із ритму і відчуваються як вторгнення. Іноді наприкінці такої розмови я питаю: добре бувай, тільки скажи наостанок, а навіщо ти дзвонив. (Ключове слово іноді, бо тільки своїм.)
А вдома у мене свій щоденний комікс на цю тему. Я роблю дітям пластівці, заливаю їх, гукаю раз, гукаю два. Поки вони дійдуть до кухні, пластівці вже встигають розмокнути. І тут звучить класика: ні, такі ми їсти не будемо.
Ось так комікс працює і як метафора дорослого життя, і як точний знімок дитячої реальності.

This comic book is absolutely hilarious! Lucy gets a song stuck in her head and it's up to Schroeder to try to make it go away. Lots of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Frieda in this volume as well. Some I'd seen before, but Peanuts strips never get old! I really loved the drawing lesson by Lucy on how to draw Charlie Brown!

Yesterday, this was my introduction to the Peanuts comic universe and put to rest the notion I had that Charlie Brown does not speak. The volume is in full-color, which was jolting but welcome after binge-reading Calvin and Hobbes. I was surprised by the nostalgia I felt after reading 67 pages in one sitting. I almost wanted to watch a little league baseball game, and I've never shown an interest in sports in my life (thus, one could guess I relate most to Lucy). I remember the page number I dog-eared because I was exactly forty pages from the end. I drove to the library later that day and began perusing the pages of the second volume an hour ago.

This is a pure shot of nostalgia. Combining new stories and some of Schulz' original comic strips, you revisit the obnoxiously bossy Lucy, the morose Charlie Brown and the most imaginative beagle to ever grace the world of comics, Snoopy.
The stories are intuitive and have some serious snark and in-depth truths in their colorful panels. PEANUTS was definitely not overrated and this slim volume stands testimony to its enduring charm.

This was so fun! A mix of classic Schulz stories, and new ones.
On the new ones, I loved the "How to Draw" comics. Seriously so funny. A few others were funny, but Charlie Brown was very angry and brash and just didn't feel like Chuck at all. But a love for the new stories was the use of the spreads and use of modern panels. It was fun seeing classic strip characters in cool modern panel layouts.

Peanuts never fail to put a smile on my face! The artists did a great job drawing the characters and the stories were awesome (both old and new). I also like their how to drawing pages too especially with having a character as the instructor (ex. Linus on how to draw Lucy and Lucy on how to draw Charlie Brown).

Edição colorida.
O primeiro que li era com a arte preto e branco. Ver a cores dos personagens, roupas etc completou a experiência para mim. Quanto as histórias todas muito nostálgicas. Consigo né ver no lugar de quase todos os personagens até do soopy.

Really fun
It was a fun book to read. The Sunday strips were charming and the new stuff is just as if Charles himself wrote it. Whoever is creating the new stuff really knows what made Peanuts, peanuts.

This book takes a challenge on head-on, pairing new peanuts stories with Sunday classics, and doing its best to make the two indistinguishable - for the most part they succeed. The new stories very much have the feel of the Peanuts classics, albeit in a slightly different form - there's one of the new ones that I would swear is a retelling of a classic collection (the masked bandit). The artwork is spot on, with perhaps a slightly cleaner look in the new works, and even includes in-character instructions on how to draw some of the characters. This is a very respectful, well-done continuation of the Peanuts legacy.
