Post-apocalypse? Set in Edinburgh? Written in the 80s?
It's almost the ideal book, in theory.
While it raised some interesting points about religion and the formation of societal attitudes, I found the people's acceptance of the belief system put forward by this book (basically: if something can go right, it will, due to alternate realities and that) somewhat ludicrous due to the many holes in the theory (which are in fact pointed out in the book). It's a bit clumsy, but it's an endearing read.
Glib verdict: like James Kelman meets Pip K. Dick
