LOVED the hero. Heroine was sassy, sweet and cute.
This is set in the Alaska wilds. It's a small community of characters that bring life to the "Little" town. M.M. Crane does a fabulous job of bringing to life the Alaska scenery and wild life. I swear I felt like I was right there. I absolutely love the ground work she's done to establish this community and individual characters. I cannot wait for each and everyone of their stories. Okay getting ahead of myself.
Our heroine is part of a think tank/conservation group that does research for mineral rights and land. She had done a summary/paper on an area of Alaska and what the conservation of land. But she finds out her ex-boyfriend has taken all her work and claimed it for himself, she had confided and shared all her findings with him. In the process he's also not saying very nice things about her. Which of course infuriates her.
Violet is determined to clear her name and make up for the mess that has issued she heads to Lost Lake in the hopes of meeting with Quinn Fortune. Mayor of the small town. She's been emailing him with no luck in responses, it's pretty clear he's ignoring her, but is determined to meet with him. She will clear her name and with his help.
Wow, loved Quinn. What a wonderful well rounded hero and Violet is perfect for him. He's educated (lawyer) but always was drawn back to his home town, where his heart, family and friends all live. When Violet shows up all in her pink snow outfit it throws Quinn for a loop. I loved the opening scene of their first meeting, what a perfect first meeting for them. Also the scene really sets the foundation for the story, town and community. So well done!!!! The meeting was so cute, quirky and Quinn was to die for in his responses.
Quinn has some issues due to his past girlfriend and it's pretty much skewed his outlook on woman/relationships. Poor Violet was just what he needed to set him straight and boy did she. You see Quinn was determined she was not going to stick around his little community, in fact he knew she didn't have the tenacity for Alaska's wilderness. He does some underhanded things to make her stay pretty uncomfortable, like say live in a cabin with no electricity, bathroom, etc... you get the picture. Well she proves him wrong and thrives in the situation. He tires to throw a few more curve balls her way but she doges each one and in the end comes out shining like a star. Quinn finds in Violet a strong, sweet, quirky and determined young woman. One he was instantly attracted to, one he tired to resist and not yield to the attraction. Nope, he couldn't resist her. She won him over, his family and the community.
Violet came to realize that she found her "home". Alaska called to her and brought a peace and acceptance to who she really was deep down. Alaska and it's wilderness brought a completeness to her and Quinn was the icing on the cake. She has some secrets she hasn't shared with him and that has her scared and nervous in what will happen to them when all is revealed.
The development of their relationship was so much fun. And it was sexy, full of heart and their was a lot of emotion and angst involved as well. There was communication and sharing as well as some confrontations as well. But very adult like and well developed as well. I loved the world of "Lost Lake" that the author created and am so invested now. Cannot wait for future books.
I highly recommend this book. The romance was beautiful, the secondary characters wonderful and the town came to life in this story. Loved the ending.

Fluffly sunshiny (virgin) professor with unmatched resilience wears down rugged, stern, hero, self-appointed protector of the Alaskan wilds, in a forced proximity setting (there's only one cabin/bed/set of furs). Lots of tension, humor aplenty, steam pay off +++, great small town romance vibes with charming secondary cast. You want this book!

This was my first book by M.M. Crane and I LOVE her writing! Bold Fortune is an adult contemporary romance set in a rural Alaska mining town during winter. The hero is grumpy and stern, the heroine is bright and bubbly, and Alaska is icy, dark, and absolutely breathtaking. I appreciated Crane’s dedication to developing this raw and unspoiled setting where the stars are characters in their own right. This was my favorite part. But the main characters are perfectly developed too, each bringing along experiences to stumble over while finding their way to one another. The romance is a slow burn but eventually results in scenes that’ll melt a blizzard, there are many side characters to keep the periphery lively, and environmental protection is a worthwhile theme that I hope will be continued throughout the series.
Bold Fortune is the first installment in M.M. Crane/Megan Crane’s series titled The Fortunes of Lost Lake. You always need a grumpy/sunshine romance, you know? They're always welcomed. Thank god I saw this book being read by Nick (and she loved it) so I absolutely had to get it as well. This gave me everything I wanted and more. It's like a mix of It Happened One Summer and Marriage For One. It both has the slow burn goodness of one and the city girl comes to small town trope of the other. Both of those books have the grumpy/sunshine as well so basically the perfect trifeca. Just read it.
Violet arrives to Alaska, to this tiny town, to save her job. There, she meest Quinn, the grumpiest man in the whole world who finds her enthusiam and sunshine-y personality very disturbing but he's intrigued... he loves it even though he says he doesn't. She's ready to spend the whole winter up there where temperatures drop and blizzards arrive. You'll find yourself reading and reading until the very last page. You'll crave both their POVs and will want to know what they are thinking because of the high stakes.
I love that he's so distressed about her wearing pink lmao. He's so cute, you practically know he's a goner since day one. He wants to keep her and be with her forever, but he knows that she won't want to stay in this town, because her life is back in San Francisco. But boy! Violet surprises everyone and she's the best, he won't see what's coming.
I cried as well, I mean I'm an emotional mess every time I read romance books. But the last third was ah *clutches heart* They really made me feel so much. Violet and Quinn are superb and I cannot wait to read the next on this series.

Bold Fortune by M.M. Crane is set in a remote Alaskan town which was truly interesting and filled with quirky characters. I had a very hard time with how naïve the heroine was considering she was so well educated and highly intelligent and the hero had too much of a martyr complex for me to fully like him. There were times I almost put it aside and didn’t finish it, but there was enough good in it and I was interested in seeing how everything played out so I continued even though it took me way longer to read this book than normal.
After Violet Parrish makes a huge error in judgment that makes the nonprofit she works for look bad, she sets out to Lost Lake, Alaska to try and convince them to trust her group in protecting the land. When she arrives she’s immediately taken by the landscape and the people but the man she needs to convince, Quinn Fortune, makes it known he won’t listen to her until she proves she can hack it in Alaska.
To be honest Quinn was a bit of a d*ck to Violet from the get go and I loved that she didn’t let it bother her. In fact, she seemed quite happy to prove she was made of sterner stuff that he thought possible. Violet reveled in living the “pioneer” lifestyle but then she had Quinn to help her and show her how.
Quinn’s family and the local people were all very interested in Violet but also were wary of what she wanted, even so they seemed to embrace her and realize that she wasn’t a threat even if Quinn didn’t. I had problems with the way Violet spoke at times, like she was a maiden in a Victorian novel and it just didn’t fit.
There was enough I liked about Bold Fortune for me to finish it, but it also had some problems to keep me from loving it. While I’m not sorry I read this book, I don’t think this is a series I’m interested in continuing.

Bold Fortune made for a cozy winter read! I am always a fan of an Alaskan setting because The Simple Wild is one of my all-time favorite books! The back and forth between Violet and Quinn was very entertaining and I loved seeing an in-depth glimpse into the realities of living in more remote areas of Alaska. The book started out slow and I did struggle with the technical parts of the story (e.g. land trusts) and I found myself skimming parts because of that. I really would have liked some explanations on land trusts in layman’s terms woven into the story so that someone unfamiliar with the topic could better understand it’s role in the story.

I’m a fan of author Megan Crane whether she writes under this pen name or as Caitlin Crews. While the recent Crane books I’ve read have been Western style romances, I saw that she has a new series The Fortunes of Lost Lake (with a slight variation on a pen name as the author of Bold Fortune is listed as M. M. Crane) set in Alaska which seems to be a popular setting lately (Jackie Ashenden, Sarah Morgenthaler and Adriana Anders have set books there in the last two years). With the almost assured guarantee of a forced proximity setting (possibly with only one bed??), I settled in to read Bold Fortune and enjoyed it thoroughly.

I've been struggling a bit to read anything new, so I'm not entirely sure if my feelings are about this book specifically or my state of mind. But I really did struggle to get lost in this and I thought for sure I would, because I love a good Alaska book. I just felt very remote from the characters the entire time, which could have been the characters or the writing or again, me! But the fact that it took me 11 days to get through a contemporary romance kind of tells the tale all on its own.

Okay, I LOVED this, I read it in one sitting.
The writing, the characters, the tension, ohhh the tension, everything was great! It was super entertaining but also had emotional depth, I think the author really knows how to get to the heart of her characters. I feel like this is what The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker wanted to be, but didn’t quite succeed in.
It would have been a five-star read if it weren’t for that absolutely dumb third-act-conflict, super basic miscommunication trope and I wasn’t quite satisfied with the resolution (what does a girl need to do to get some proper groveling around here?). But the ending was still really cute.
Highly recommend if you enjoy contemporary romances and/or if you love an Alaskan wilderness setting with lots of snow!
If you enjoyed The Simple Wild, It Happened One Summer or anything by Talia Hibbert, you will most likely also really enjoy this!

I really LOVED this grumpy/sunshine Alaskan romance between a curmudgeonly Mayor and the woman who arrives in his small Alaskan town hoping to help improve the mining land use. Violet is a strong, independent woman who isn't scared off by the remoteness of Alaska in winter, despite all that Quinn does to scare her off. When these two finally give in to their feelings the sparks FLY! Great on audio, I can't wait for the next book in this series! Recommended for fans of The simple wild books by KA Tucker.

There were a few things that worked well for me with this book. I loved the setting and the chemistry between Violet and Quinn and I really enjoyed the atmosphere with the scenes that included the Fortune family!
However what didn't work for me was that it felt a bit too wordy. The inner monologues just felt a bit too flowery, lines of thoughts that didn't always seem necessary. I found myself wishing they'd just get back to talking because the dialogue was fantastic.
Time also seemed to be skimmed over. One minute a week had passed and the next months? I don't even know! It was kind of jarring like I wanted some of that time included!
The characters themselves were great, I'm looking forward to reading more because I'd like to catch up with them and of course see where things go with some of the other characters. I just hope it's a bit more balanced between inner monologue and dialogue!

A grump and sunshine pairing in the frozen tundra that is Alaska!
Quinn is verrah BOTHERED by Violet's bright and sunshine-y presence in his town and does everything to try and chase her away, but Violet takes it ALL IN with a smile. Of course, this is romance novel, and every love interest in a romance novel is an I.D.I.O.T so this hopeless fool finds himself falling for Violet hard.
Bold Fortune was adorable and the chemistry between Quinn and Violet was great. Plus, because they are in the winter in Alaska, there's plenty of opportunity to cuddle ~just for warmth~. ;)

Grumpy, isolated heroes get me every time!! I am so in love with that character vibe. I also love a brainy heroine and Violet is that for sure. Add in a bit of danger/suspense, and I was hooked!! I enjoyed this book a great deal and am looking forward to more in the series for sure! MM Fortune wrote a great book to kick off this new series.

Je dois avouer que j'ai été assez surprise par cette romance et dans le bon sens : je cherchais quelque chose de léger qui me fasse passer le temps, une romance un peu cliché mais bien écrite et finalement je suis tombée sur cette petite perle que j'ai adoré =)

- la romance adorable et tellement amusante aussi =) (j'ai tellement ri avec la scène de leur première rencontre et ça faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas autant ri sur un livre !!) Quelques dramas que j'ai bien aimé (notamment avec son ex maléfique (et j'adore les ex maléfiques ><))
- cette FIN !! j'ai ADORE la scène où ils se retrouvent (et le lapin xD) C'était parfait !

A nice romance that is also a declaration of love to Alaska =)
I must admit that I was quite surprised by this romance and in a good way : I was looking for something light to pass the time, a somewhat cliché but well-written romance and finally I came across this little pearl that I loved so much =)
What I particularly liked :
- all the scenery in Alaska ! I absolutely loved the descriptions and discovering the small community of Lost Lake through the eyes of the two heroes !! It made me want to pack my bags straight away to go there ><
- the characters and ESPECIALLY the heroine who was a huge crush ! She had a cute nerd bubbly side, always upbeat without being silly, that you rarely see in romances and I loved watching her come face to face with the hero and the rest =)
- the adorable romance and so much fun too =) (I laughed so much with the scene of their first meeting and it's been a long time since I laughed so much on a book !!) Some dramas that I liked (especially with her evil ex (and I love evil exes ><))
- this END!! I LOVED the scene where they meet (and the bunny xD) It was perfect !
In short, an unexpected crush that I recommend for fans of cozy romance =) I hope there will be a sequel for the secondary characters =)

I was hoping this would be as good as Unloved or Wild North, but this was just okay. I never fully got into it or really cared for the characters. Also, I'm a little over authors romanticizing Alaska, especially small towns in Alaska, so much while overlooking all the terrible parts of it: the rampant raping, the extremely corrupt prison system (particularly in Anchorage), how many serial killers come from there, etc.

This was a maybe book for me, as in it might work, it might now. I found Violet to be cold and clinical, Quinn was an ass. The two of them together, very odd. I know I was making a face while reading it, wondering what the hell was going on with these 2 and not in a good way. I couldn't bring myself to care. In the end this one wasn't for me.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get to visit Alaska. In the meantime, I sure enjoy experiencing it via books. Bold Fortune introduces us to Lost Lake, Alaska, an unincorporated township so remote you can’t get to it by road. It sounded so beautiful. There’s a strong sense of place, so strong that it took me longer to realize how underdeveloped the plot and characters were in comparison. I wound up with a whole lot of questions about logistics.
While I enjoyed Violet and Quinn’s grumpy-sunshine pairing, we don't know a whole lot about either of them. I’m still not completely sure what they do. Violet has a PhD (in what?) and everyone calls her a professor but she says she’s not. She works for the Institute, a nonprofit in San Francisco—maybe a think tank?—that helps corporations address the impact of destructive large-scale mining practices. What Violet’s role in this is, I have no idea. I also had no idea how she could afford to live by herself in San Francisco and not even sublet her apartment while she was in Alaska for weeks at a time. I didn’t think professors/think tank members made that much. I also was surprised she could afford a last minute trip to Alaska just to make a case for land conservation.
Quinn, on the other hand, is the head of the community trust and therefore spends a lot of time rejecting inquiries about the land from people, including Violet. But is that an actual paid position?? I could not wrap my head around the economics of a town like Lost Lake. I wasn’t sure what anyone did for work, aside from Bowie the pilot and the siblings who owned the general store in Hopeless. Perhaps you need less money in rural Alaska but I don’t think it would be possible to fully live by way of bartering.
To that end, I wasn’t clear on why the community held quarterly meetings to discuss offers on the land. Or was it offers on the mine? That too confused me. It’s possible I didn’t read close enough but I think it’s that we weren’t told or the author assumed the average reader understands how land trusts work. The basic conflict between Violet and Quinn didn’t make much sense either because she was advocating for conservation, which seems in line with what the town would want, if they’ve been refusing to accept any offers from corporations for decades. It didn’t sound like the mine was in use or ever would be so it was hard for me to buy Violet and Quinn being at odds. Additionally, I wanted more about the racial makeup of the town. This is a very white cishet world. The founding family owns both the land and mineral rights, instead of the Native corporation, and that was really the only acknowledgement we get of indigenous people. I don’t know enough about the relationship between Native people and Alaska but it felt odd that there wouldn’t be any in Lost Lake. Maybe Quinn’s ancestor stole the land from a tribe.
My confusion aside, I did enjoy watching Violet and Quinn’s relationship develop. I probably would have rated it higher if not for a nonsensical low moment and if the author hadn’t chose to have Violet apologize, when she had done nothing wrong. Quinn was the one who needed to atone for his actions and he got out of that fairly neatly, really leaning into his self-martyring ways. Everything wrapped up in warp speed , which didn’t feel entirely earned or believable. The gender essentialism got really old, particularly Quinn’s fixation on her wearing pink.
There was enough that worked for me that I am curious about the rest of the series. Quinn’s brother Bowie’s book is next but I’m more interested in his sister Piper and whatever is swirling between her and Noah. I’ll probably at least give that book a try.

Coffee Dates With Bold Fortune
First Date– When Violet Parrish is duped, desperate times call for desperate measures. She sets out for the Alaskan village of Lost Lake. Grumpy meets Brainy in this environmental romance. Quinn Fortune will sit down with Violet- but only if she can survive a month. The beautiful landscape, its danger and the well-developed characters have me all in. I laughed at their first met cute.
Second Date: The romance is a slow burn, but you’ll appreciate the banter, sizzling chemistry and intense moments as these two get to know each other. I loved how the land, water and heck, even the stars were characters in this story. It was beautifully done.
Third Date: Danger, passion, fear, and reconciliation await you on this last date. There is conflict from outside forcing the couple to look at their own personal baggage. I loved their passion and growth. Secondary characters were wonderful, from siblings to neighbors.
This is the first in the Fortunes of Lost Lake and I l cannot wait for the next one! If you love romances set against the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, you’ll fall hard for Quinn and Violet. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

February 16, 2022DNF @ 74% on 2/15/22. That’s a lot of percent! Yeah, mostly because I saw people on Twitter chattering about it and wanted to give it a go. And it was fine to start — an interesting heroine … but then I kept reading and that was mostly it. The purpose of the heroine’s journey to Alaska wasn’t made very explicit until HALFWAY through the book, there was so much repetition from the hero about how the heroine could never last a day in Alaska, and a lot of gender essentialism that I find annoying about small town grumpy/sunshine city v. country stories (ie, men being men and women being sweet and sunshine).
I was gonna read it all the way through anyway but at 74% is when the couple has sex and — spoilers!! — the heroine tells the hero right before penetration that she’s a virgin, he penetrates, and she IMMEDIATELY ORGASMS. And then I had to nope right outta there.

I know I can count on Megan Crane/Caitlin Crews whenever I need a maximum level impact of emotions in my reading.
and helloooooo this is my first book of the year, and it's a total win too??? Love this for me. Hopefully this is a good sign for the reading year ahead.
Anyway,
I love Violet and her optimism, can-do attitude. She meets every challenge head on, which is v inspiring to me. Quinn is a broody bear and I also adore him. Love my (fictional) men broody, the broodier the better. I love how they clashed: basically it's just Quinn persistently telling Violet that she couldn't possibly survive the harsh Alaskan winter for a week, then a whole month, and Violet doing precisely that (effortlessly), thank you very much, and Quinn getting grumpier, feat. the entire Fortune family and basically the whole Lost Lake town people watching from the sidelines with popcorn lmao
Now that I'm thinking about it, it's GRUMPY/SUNSHINE trope, y'all (!!!). And there's also ONLY ONE BED [smirk emoji].
I love the location setting, I love the cast of characters. All in all, this is pretty much a flawless read to me. The Fortune siblings' dynamics reminded me of the Kittredge siblings (time to reread!), and now I'm definitely very much excited for the next instalment in the series.

It wasn’t until the crowd shifted and she found Quinn Fortune staring at her, his back to the bar and his gaze intent, that she understood. This felt like home.

Enjoyable modern romance, and an auspicious series starter. The characters are well-drawn and appealing, and the romance was believable, even if the frequent discussions of the hero's "abdominal situation" were kind of ridiculous. Still a fun, light, and quick read that romance fans should appreciate.

This book was freakishly wonderful & felt like a bear hug (pun intended in reference to the story). Unlike the mountains of Alaska, this opposites attract romance that will melt your hearts.
When Violet goes to Alaska for land purpose research work, she has to go through the approval of the rugged handsome protector of the mines, Quinn Fortune. Quinn agrees to consider her proposal if she survives the winter of Alaska. But what started as a bet turns into an unexpected situation between them.
Reasons you need to read this:
-opposites attract
-Grumpy/sunshine
-Alaskan Romance
-Only one CABIN!!
The romance was mesmerizing, heartfelt & so so touching.
Violet was the epitome of sunshine with her pink outfits, note scribbling. She took every challenge with complete determination & a smile.
Quinn was the ultimate mountain man ; grumpy, brooding hero who was hell bent on protecting his land & loved ones.
Their interactions were fire, funny & filled with sparks. I loved how despite Quinn making sure to push Violet away, she never backed down. Their internal realizations about their feelings for each other was to completely die & swoon over.
This gave me The Simple Wild vibes & I couldn't recommend this enough!
